It's great to be back with everyone on the Tiger Bloc Podcast! On this episode, John Chinaman interviews Ukrainian antifascist and anti-authoritarian Dmytro Mrachnik. Dmytro has been fighting in Ukraine since the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. Please bear with us on the sound quality. With power and internet failures in Ukraine, this podcast had to be a recorded phone call. Dmytro takes us back to 2014 and the Maidan Revolution, when he was hanging in the Kyiv punk rock scene. Dmytro gives us his perspective as a dual Russian and Ukrainian speaker and dispels myths about supposed discrimination against Russian speakers. Dmytro describes how the left reacted to the Maidan and Russian invasion in 2014, and what changed in 2022 with an increased left wing response and militancy. As is depressingly common, Dmytro also relates the lack of an international left-wing response to assist the Ukrainian left, even two years after the full-scale invasion.  Dmytro also talks a bit about what army life is like. Dmytro fought in both the Kharkiv and Bakhmut fronts. Since joining the military, he's actually risen in the ranks to first lieutenant. Listen to the podcast to learn about the experience of an antifascist in the military. Dmytro is a prolific writer about politics and Ukrainian culture. You can find his writings on nihilist.li and Anarchist Library. Find Dima on Instagram at @mrachnik, on Twitter at @dmrachnik, or email at dmrachnik@gmail.com. On October 7th, Hamas fighters breached the militarized fence separating the occupied Gaza strip from Israeli communities in the south, killing 1400 people and taking 200 hostages. Israel immediately retaliated with severe bombardment of the Gaza strip that, at the time of this writing, has killed 7000 people. In the West Bank, settler violence and army raids have also killed dozens of Palestinians, and Palestinian citizens of Israel as well as leftist Israelis have been arrested for speaking out. While the world is currently transfixed by what's happening in Israel-Palestine, this story did not begin on October 7th. Joey Ayoub and Daniel Voskoboynik are joined by Dana El Kurd, Orly Noy, and Yair Wallach to think through this moment, process our grief together, and articulate alternative visions for both peoples. We focused on three themes: a) Grief, b) Thinking Through This Moment, c) What can be done? This will be the first of many episodes on post-October 7th Israel-Palestine. Dana El-Kurd is a researcher in political science, and an assistant professor at the University of Richmond. Works on state-society relations in the Arab world with topics like authoritarianism and international intervention. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and she is also the author of "Polarized and Demobilized: Legacies of Authoritarianism in Palestine." A regular guest of TFTT, Dana has recently co-written an essay with Leila Al-Shami, Joey Ayoub and Romeo Kokriatski for the South/South Movement entitled "A view of anti-imperialism from the periphery." Orly Noy is an editor at Local Call, a Hebrew-language news site committed to democracy, peace, equality, social justice, transparency, freedom of information and resisting the occupation. She is also a political activist with the Balad political party, and a translator of Farsi poetry and prose. She is the chair of B'Tselem's executive board. Her writing deals with the lines that intersect and define her identity as Mizrahi, a female leftist, a woman, a temporary migrant living inside a perpetual immigrant, and the constant dialogue between them. She recently published a piece for 972Mag and Local Call entitled "Enough with the warlords. There is another way." Yair Wallach is a social and cultural historian of modern Palestine/Israel at SOAS, University of London, studying the entangled and relational histories of Jews and Palestinians. He is also the author of the 2020 book "A City in Fragments: Urban Text in Modern Jerusalem" and has most recently published in The New Statesman a piece entitled: "The deadly logic of the existential war: Warnings that the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict is heading towards genocide should be heeded." Western foreign ministers are gathering in Brussels to assess their response to the war in Ukraine. Earlier the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA said essential equipment at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was unaffected and there is no change in radiation levels after a fire. The IAEA's statement followed assurances from Ukrainian regulatory authorities. Flo Letoaba spoke to Romeo Kokriatski, a Managing Editor, New Voice Of Ukraine and co-host of Hyper Ukraine

**This episode was recorded prior to Russia's assault on Ukraine on Thursday.** Putin pounces. Ukraine in peril. COVID sidelined at home.  Romeo Kokriatski, managing editor of New Voice of Ukraine, joins us from Kyiv to talk about the horror posed by Russia's aggression. Plus, comedian and creator of The Room Next Door Michael Spicer joins us to discuss what's going on domestically, as Boris Johnson tries to ignore his way out of the pandemic.  “Putin is a dictator, he doesn't need a reason to do anything.” - Romeo Kokriatski  “Russia's demands were completely unacceptable. It would leave NATO countries on Russia's borders completely undefended.” - Romeo Kokriatski “Apart from the US, Britain can hurt Russia the most, yet we aren't fulfilling our obligations.” - Ian Dunt  “Covid is not the same as a cold. How are people meant to protect others if they don't know they have it?” - Minnie Rahman  “There's been a running narrative of ‘when will they get this right?' about this government.” - Michael Spicer  “As long as this Government is in charge, there will always be material for comedy.” - Michael Spicer www.patreon.com/ohgodwhatnow Presented by Dorian Lynskey with Ian Dunt and Minnie Rahman. With so much hysteria and propaganda going around the world about Ukraine it's important to find journalists on the ground that we can trust. Whether it's Kremlin backed mouthpieces like Russia Today or anything coming out of the US State Department it's clear the concerns of the innocent majority are not being addressed. It is especially hard to find independent Ukrainian voices working in English, and their ability to translate between three languages is invaluable to interested folks in the West. Today on Black Diplomats host Terrell Starr welcomes Ukrainian journalists Toma Istomina and Romeo Kokriatski. Istomina is the deputy chief editor of the Kyiv Independent, a new journalism venture that was formed by the team from the Kyiv Post after they were summarily fired for resisting oversight by an oligarch. Kokriatski is the managing editor of the New Voice of Ukraine and host of the podcast Ukraine Without Hype.
