*) Ballistic missile attack on Russia will trigger nuclear retaliation — Putin Russian President Vladimir Putin approved an updated nuclear doctrine, signalling Moscow might use nuclear weapons in response to conventional missile strikes supported by nuclear powers. The revision, prompted by US approval for Ukraine to use long-range missiles against Russia, comes on the 1,000th day of the Russia-Ukraine war. The updated policy considers attacks with conventional weapons, drones, or aircraft as potential triggers for a nuclear response. Additionally, aggression by a coalition member state would be treated as aggression by the entire coalition. *) Israel bombs Gaza home, leaving a dozen Palestinians dead Israeli air strikes hit a Joudeh family home in Gaza's Jabalia al-Balad, killing at least 12 Palestinians and leaving 10 missing, witnesses report. Journalist Hossam Shabat, named on an Israeli hit list, was injured in another attack. “I was deliberately targeted,” Shabat shared, recalling chaos and carnage as he responded to survivors before another bomb struck. *) Biden failed Gaza, stood by Israel blindly: White House staff White House staffers criticise President Joe Biden over Palestine's Gaza, citing his failure to enforce an ultimatum requiring Israel to ease the humanitarian crisis or face arms restrictions, according to a report by Politico. A letter from Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had set a 30-day deadline for measures like allowing 350 aid trucks into Gaza daily. Despite the deadline passing, Biden reaffirmed the US's "ironclad" support for Israel. Meanwhile, the Senate is set to vote on blocking $20B in arms sales amid global criticism of civilian harm. *) Pakistan launches anti-terror operation amid rising attacks Pakistan has launched a major military operation against separatist groups in the southwest region, including the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). This comes after a recent surge in attacks, including a deadly suicide bombing at a train station. The operation aims to target groups responsible for targeting civilians and disrupting the country's economic progress. *) Türkiye aims to double down on African trade Türkiye is setting its sights on a significant boost in trade with Africa, aiming to reach a staggering $50 billion. This ambitious goal, nearly ten times the 2003 figure, is a testament to the growing economic ties between the two regions. Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz emphasised Türkiye's commitment to supporting Africa's development, highlighting Turkish investments and projects across the continent. With increased diplomatic efforts and a focus on key sectors like agriculture, energy, and technology, Türkiye is poised to strengthen its partnership with African nations.
*) Israel kills 29 Palestinians in northern Gaza strikes At least 29 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks, as the army continues its massive offensive, now in its 18th day, in northern Gaza. Artillery shelling targeted a school sheltering displaced civilians near Birket Abu Rashid in Jabalia, killing seven people and injuring dozens. According to witnesses, civilians gathered upon Israeli military orders at the UN-run Kreism School when an Israeli tank fired a shell towards them. Six people were also killed when an Israeli airstrike targeted a group of civilians filling water containers in Jabalia al-Balad in northern Gaza. *) Blinken heads again for Middle East to push for Gaza truce US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is back again in the Middle East to push for a Gaza ceasefire two weeks before the US elections. This will be his 11th trip to the region since Israel's war on Gaza broke out a year ago, without any results. Ahead of the trip, US President Joe Biden called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to congratulate him for his actions in Gaza and Lebanon even as Israel has received widespread condemnation for its genocidal war in the besieged Palestinian enclave. Meanwhile, last week, Pentagon announced the deployment to Israel of a THAAD anti-missile system battery and a crew of US military personnel. *) Australian senator to King Charles: 'Give us what you stole from us' An Indigenous senator in Australia told King Charles III that Australia is not his land and the monarch was not needed as the British royal visited Australia's parliament. Indigenous independent Senator Lidia Thorpe was escorted out of a parliamentary reception for the royal couple after shouting that British colonisers had taken Indigenous land and bones. She lamented that British colonialism committed genocide against the indigenous people and shouted …. “Give us what you stole from us — our bones, our skulls, our babies, our people. You destroyed our land. Give us a treaty. We want a treaty.” *) Ukraine blasts UN chief for accepting BRICS summit invitation in Russia Ukraine's Foreign Ministry blasted UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres for what it said was his acceptance of an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin to a BRICS summit. Putin will host the 16th BRICS summit on Oct. 22-24 in Russia's city of Kazan, where 32 countries have confirmed their participation, with 24 being represented by their heads of state, while the remaining eight will send high-ranking officials. Major topics at the summit are likely to include economic cooperation, trade agreements and the challenges faced by BRICS members, such as geopolitical tensions, the global economic slowdown and climate change. Russia will likely highlight multilateralism, using the BRICS platform to counter Western-dominated global governance structures. *) Turkish Festival in Washington attracts thousands with rich cultural displays Thousands of people gathered in Washington, DC for the annual Turkish Festival, immersing themselves in a lively celebration of Turkish culture, featuring vibrant performances, traditional music, and authentic cuisine. Organised by the Turkish-American Association of Washington DC (ATA-DC), the festival took place on Pennsylvania Avenue, near the Capitol, offering a showcase of Türkiye's rich cultural heritage. I first heard about burn pits from veterans when I was a pulmonary fellow at the Portland, VA. Our active duty military are often exposed to hazards when deployed, and the damage can be lifelong. Today I am joined by Captain Le Roy Torres and his wife Rosie Torres, the founders of of Burn Pits 360. They share their experience and journey through its ups and downs, from Balad, Iraq to the emergency room to the operating room to camping on the steps of the Capitol with Jon Stewart. What Can You Do? Look up your Senator and Representative and tell them that you are someone who wants to ensure that our soldiers and veterans receive the healthcare they need both during and after their service. Ask them what they are doing about clean air for all. November 11th is Veteran's Day. Make sure you thank a veteran for their service. Depending on when you listen to this, there may be an election coming up. Step into the world of military and civilian medical excellence as we share the stage with Dr. Peggy Knudsen, a leading trauma surgeon whose work bridges these two critical spheres. Her journey from a Minnesota mining town to the front lines of trauma surgery reveals the profound impact of military-civilian partnerships in healthcare. Through stories of her time in Iraq and Germany, Dr. Knudsen unravels the complexities of trauma care and the incredible strides made possible by the collaboration between military-civilian expertise and innovation. Imagine stepping off a plane and straight into an active war zone as a civilian surgeon. Our latest episode brings that reality to light, showcasing civilian surgeons who volunteered to serve in military hospitals during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Their integration into military teams and the skills honed in the heat of battle are not only harrowing tales of service but also invaluable learning experiences that have reshaped their professional and personal lives. Join us as we examine the rigorous process that prepared these civilians for the battlefield, and the indelible mark it left on their approach to surgery back home. These civilian heroes didn't just bring their expertise to the theater of war; they returned with invaluable insights that have since transformed the landscape of civilian trauma care. We address the evolving landscape of trauma medicine, where military innovations have found their place in our local hospitals. Al-Balad البلد, "The City" is the 90th Surah or chapter of the Qur'an. It is composed of 20 verses Summary 1-7 Man, though created in misery, yet boasts of his riches 8-16 Captives to be freed and the poor and orphan to be fed 17-20 Description of the companions of the right and left hand The subject matter and style of Qur'anic chapter al balad resemble those of the earliest Surahs revealed at Mecca,[2] but it contains a pointer which indicates that it was sent down in the period when the disbelievers of Makkah had resolved to oppose Muhammad, and made it lawful for themselves to commit tyranny and excess against him In this Surah a vast subject has been compressed into a few brief sentences, and it is a miracle of the Quran that a complete ideology of life which could hardly be explained in a thick volume has been abridged most effectively in brief sentences of this short Surah. Its theme is to explain the true position of man in the world and of the world in relation to man and to tell that God has shown to man both the highways of good and evil, has also provided for him the means to judge and see and follow them, and now it rests upon mans own effort and judgment whether he chooses the path of virtue and reaches felicity or adopts the path of vice and meets with doom First, the city of Makkah and the hardships being faced therein by the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) and the state of the children of Adam have been cited as a witness to the truth that this world is not a place of rest and ease for man, where he might have been born to enjoy life, but here he has been created into toil and struggle. If this theme is read with verse 39 of Surah An-Najm (Laisa lil insani illa ma saa : there is nothing for man but what he has striven for), it becomes plain that in this world the future of man depends on his toil and struggle, effort and striving After this, man's misunderstanding that he is all in all in this world and that there is no superior power to watch what he does and to call him to account, has been refuted Then, taking one of the many moral concepts of ignorance held by man, as an example, it has been pointed out what wrong criteria of merit and greatness he has proposed for himself in the world The person who for ostentation and display squanders heaps of wealth, not only himself prides upon his extravagances but the people also admire him for it enthusiastically, whereas the Being Who is watching over his deeds, sees by what methods he obtained the wealth and in what ways and with what motives and intention he spent it Then Allah says: We have given man the means of knowledge and the faculties of thinking and understanding and opened up before him both the highways of virtue and vice: one way leads down to moral depravity, and it is an easy way pleasing for the self; the other way leads up to moral heights, which is steep like an uphill road, for scaling which man has to exercise self- restraint It is man's weakness that he prefers slipping down into the abyss to scaling the cliff Then, Allah has explained what the steep road is by following which man can ascend to the heights It is that he should give up spending for ostentation, display and pride and should spend his wealth to help the orphans and the needy, should believe in Allah and His Religion and joining the company of believers should participate in the construction of a society which should fulfill the demands of virtue and righteousness patiently and should be compassionate to the people The end of those who follow this way is that they would become worthy of Allah's mercies On the contrary, the end of those who follow the wrong way, is the fire of Hell from which there is no escape

On October 7th, Hamas fighters breached the militarized fence separating the occupied Gaza strip from Israeli communities in the south, killing 1400 people and taking 200 hostages. Israel immediately retaliated with severe bombardment of the Gaza strip that, at the time of this writing, has killed 7000 people. In the West Bank, settler violence and army raids have also killed dozens of Palestinians, and Palestinian citizens of Israel as well as leftist Israelis have been arrested for speaking out. While the world is currently transfixed by what's happening in Israel-Palestine, this story did not begin on October 7th. Joey Ayoub and Daniel Voskoboynik are joined by Dana El Kurd, Orly Noy, and Yair Wallach to think through this moment, process our grief together, and articulate alternative visions for both peoples. We focused on three themes: a) Grief, b) Thinking Through This Moment, c) What can be done? This will be the first of many episodes on post-October 7th Israel-Palestine. Dana El-Kurd is a researcher in political science, and an assistant professor at the University of Richmond. Works on state-society relations in the Arab world with topics like authoritarianism and international intervention. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and she is also the author of "Polarized and Demobilized: Legacies of Authoritarianism in Palestine." A regular guest of TFTT, Dana has recently co-written an essay with Leila Al-Shami, Joey Ayoub and Romeo Kokriatski for the South/South Movement entitled "A view of anti-imperialism from the periphery." Orly Noy is an editor at Local Call, a Hebrew-language news site committed to democracy, peace, equality, social justice, transparency, freedom of information and resisting the occupation. She is also a political activist with the Balad political party, and a translator of Farsi poetry and prose. She is the chair of B'Tselem's executive board. Her writing deals with the lines that intersect and define her identity as Mizrahi, a female leftist, a woman, a temporary migrant living inside a perpetual immigrant, and the constant dialogue between them. She recently published a piece for 972Mag and Local Call entitled "Enough with the warlords. There is another way." Yair Wallach is a social and cultural historian of modern Palestine/Israel at SOAS, University of London, studying the entangled and relational histories of Jews and Palestinians. He is also the author of the 2020 book "A City in Fragments: Urban Text in Modern Jerusalem" and has most recently published in The New Statesman a piece entitled: "The deadly logic of the existential war: Warnings that the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict is heading towards genocide should be heeded." We are reminded of the sacred oath that humans have taken, by housing the Divine Light within our bodies. The combination of both in one, is insan, who struggle to reconcile these two realities. The only way to reconcile this turmoil, is to dissolve oneself and transcend to the Ultimate Light. The nature of the mind is to blame and claim innocence. Its shadowy nature will always try to justify its existence. Once embedded with emotions- there is havoc. Restrict its work to outer world tasks, rather than the ego's desires for fame, glory and validation, amongst other expectations. The way to resolve the conundrum is to release yourself, your neck from the suffocation of your illusions and to give nourishment to those who are destitute, in whatever way is appropriate. Each one of us are orphans (yateem) and destitutes (fakir) asking for compassion, and the Qur'an has many examples referring to mankind as such. Since we are in the zone of duality, one aspect of us tries to reach for Divine Attributes like Generosity, Kindness, Clemency, rendering our body, our balad (city), as healthy as possible, if not, we will find ourselves filled with anger and suspicion, and other poisons-causing all sorts of depressions. The key to our contentment is that our loyalty should always be to the One and only boundless and Eternal One along with the practice of all blessings being attributed to the One who has provided them, failing which, we will reach a disastrous end. Translation by Shakir: I do call to witness this City;- And thou art a freeman of this City;- And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- And shown him the two highways? But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- (It is:) freeing the bondman; Or the giving of food in a day of privation To the orphan with claims of relationship, Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/shaykh-fadhlalla-haeri/message

This is Part 2 of my interview with Army Brigadier General (Ret) Chris Petty. After leaving the Active Duty Army in 1991, Gen Petty joined the Colorado Army National Guard and took command of C Company, 1/131st Aviation Regiment in Eagle, CO. That unit ran the High Altitude Aviation Training Site or HAATS. In 1994, he moved to Buckley Air National Guard Base and assumed command of A Company, 2/135th Aviation Battalion. After getting promoted to Major in 1996, he became the Battalion Assistant S3. After 18 months, he was reassigned to become the Deputy Commander of the Colorado Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Response Team, which was later renamed to the Civil Support Team (CST). After two years, he left to go back to the Guard and took over as the 2/135th Battalion S3. His next assignment was as the Headquarters Commandant of the Joint Force Headquarters of Colorado. Later, he assumed command of 2nd Battalion, 135th Aviation Regiment and in 2006, he led the Battalion's deployment to Balad, Iraq, supporting Joint Special Operations Command.

Ryan Stovall joined The Protectors® to talk about his poetry collection Black Snowflakes Smothering A Torch: How to Talk to Your Veteran, working in a combat hospital, Balad burn pits, his writing career, and a ton more. About Ryan: Ryan Stovall is a former adventurer, world traveler, and Green Beret twice decorated for valor and awarded two Purple Hearts, whose poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction can be found in numerous journals and anthologies.About BLACK SNOWFLAKES: A primer serving to facilitate dialogue between those who have experienced the crushing arms of war and those who have not, at its foundation Black Snowflakes Smothering a Torch presupposes that many issues veterans face when reintegrating come not from the veteran's traumas but from the hypocrisies inherent to American civilian culture itself. As such Black Snowflakes represents an invaluable starting point, one that will serve as both a reference for civilians seeking to understand and as a voice for veterans hoping to explain.Support the showMake sure to check out Jason on IG @drjasonpiccoloJason's book, UNWAVERING is out now!

In this special episode, Captain Torres explains how landfill-like burn pits in Iraq gave him a chronic lung injury and a toxic brain injury. Captain Le Roy Torres served in the U.S. Army Reserve for 24 years, and spent a year on duty in Balad, Iraq. While there, Torres lived and worked in close proximity to a burn pit. These burn pits act as landfills, where everything from trash, to jet fuel, to medical waste was burned. They were extremely large, and the one near CPT Torres was approximately 10 acres in diameter. It burned 24/7, pumping toxic chemicals and smoke into the air, and into the lungs of soldiers. As a result of breathing in these fumes, CPT Torres developed chronic lung and brain injuries, which forced him to visit the hospital over 400 times in 10 years. Burn Pits 360 was founded by Torres and his wife in an attempt to improve post-deployment health outcomes for veterans, especially those caused by the burn pits. Recently, they helped pass the PACT Act, which expands benefits for veterans who were exposed to the burn pits. You can find CPT Torres on Twitter at @leroytorres01
