The War in Ukraine: An internationalist, working-class perspective | Solidarity Without Exception, Ep. 1

Three years after Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, roughly 20% of the Ukrainian territory remains occupied by Russian troops. Before the invasion, there were 41 million people living in Ukraine; today, the UN Refugee Agency estimates that 3.7 million people still in Ukraine have been displaced from their homes, while almost 7 million refugees had to flee abroad. The war has severely damaged the Ukrainian economy and the living conditions for people in Ukraine.Like everywhere else in the world, there is a class divide in Ukraine, and the impact of the war has not been equally felt: while the average Ukrainian was forced to migrate, lose wages, and fight on the front, the wealthy were able to escape conscription and put their money abroad. While economic elites reportedly took $35 billion out of the country since the start of the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelesnky not only refused to expropriate and nationalize their assets but, instead, chose to impose harsh anti-labor measures on workers and unions and make further cuts to social services using the national emergency laws. The fight to ensure Ukrainian people's right to self-determination is not just about removing all Russian troops from Ukrainian territory and allowing the Ukrainian people to decide their own fate without fears of coups and invasions. It also has to do with stopping and reversing the encroachment of Western corporate and US imperial interests that seek to further exploit the country. However, prospects for this are growing darker by the day as President Donald Trump's new administration engages in bilateral negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and without Zelensky, to end the war, all while suggesting that the US take ownership of 50% of Ukraine's rare earth minerals. Solidarity with working people in Ukraine and their fight against Russia's invasion never meant support for the Zelensky government, the US government, NATO, or the designs of rival imperial powers, but lack of international solidarity has left Ukrainians in an impossible situation.   This is Solidarity without Exception, a new podcast series brought to you by The Real News Network, in partnership with the Ukraine Solidarity Network, hosted by Blanca Missé and Ashley Smith. In Episode One of this series, released on the three-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, we analyze the current state of the war and the last three years from an internationalist, working-class perspective. Cohost Blanca Missé speaks with Denys Bondar, a native of Ukraine, professor of Physics at Tulane University, and one of the coordinators of the Ukraine Solidarity Network in the US; and Hanna Perekhoda, a researcher at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, a founder of the Switzerland-based Committee of Solidarity with the Ukrainian People and Russian Opponents of the War, and an ethnic Ukrainian who grew up in the Russian-speaking the city of Donetsk in the Donbas region of Eastern Ukraine.Help us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Sign up for our newsletterFollow us on BlueskyLike us on FacebookFollow us on TwitterDonate to support this podcastPre-Production: Maximillian Alvarez, Blanca Missé, Kayla Rivara, Ashley SmithStudio Production: David HebdenAudio Post-Production: Alina NehlichMusic Credits: Venticinque Aprile (“Bella Ciao” Orchestral Cover) by Savfk |https://www.youtube.com/savfkmusicMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.com Creative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

For this episode, Errico answers some questions we had about what's been happening in Syria and concerns from within the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. You can find ideas and updates from the TA formation on their blog, https://tekosinaanarsist.noblogs.org. Past interviews with TA can be found here. The United Nations Summit in New York City showed the world what the future framework of global governance would look like, and it leads towards the eventual enslavement of humanity by unelected globalists. Internationalists from around the world met to secure their control over the population through policy instead of bullets. The “Pact for the Future” includes the Global Digital Compact as well as the Declaration on Future Generations. These policies will allow the UN to take control of disaster response globally and declare pandemics whenever they see fit, offering them unique power that will undoubtedly be abused. Send us a Text Message.#287 - With the creation of the Internationalist running shoe in 1980, Nike created a road running shoe that helped spark the tsunami of running that even today hasn't stopped. But by the mid-1980s, Nike realized that there was a lot more money to be made outside of running; lots and lots more money. They abandoned running for the greener pastures of trendy fashion. That was the corporation's first step away from running for Nike. Throughout the years, Nike has had several missteps, some perhaps not deliberate, but many, could have been handled in better, more appropriate ways. In this week's episode, I talk about Nike's downfall as it relates only to running. Of course, they have had other problems not-running related. Before Josef Stalin's death in 1953, the USSR had, at best, an ambivalent relationship with noncommunist international organisations. Although it had helped found the United Nations, it refused to join the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and other major agencies beyond the Security Council and General Assembly, casting them as foreign meddlers. Under new leadership, the USSR joined UNESCO and a slew of international organisations for the first time, including the World Health Organization and the International Labor Organization. As a result, it enabled Soviet diplomats, scholars, teachers, and even some blue-collar workers to participate in global discussions on topics ranging from their professional specialties to worldwide problems. Reds in Blue: UNESCO, World Governance, and the Soviet Internationalist Imagination (Oxford University Press, 2023) by Dr. Louis Porter investigates Soviet relations with one of the most prominent of these organisations, UNESCO, to present a novel way of thinking about the role of the United Nations in the Soviet experience of the Cold War. Drawing on unused archival material from the former USSR and elsewhere, the book examines the forgotten stories of Soviet citizens who contributed to the nuts-and-bolts operations and lesser-known activities of world governance. These unexamined dimensions of everyday participation in the UN's bureaucracy, conferences, publications, and technical assistance show the body's importance for a group of Soviet "one-worlders," who used the UN to imagine and work for a better world amidst the realities of the Cold War. Meanwhile, the Khrushchev and early Brezhnev governments sought to use their participation as a means of spreading Soviet influence within Western-dominated international organisations but discovered that this required risk-taking and a degree of openness for which the Soviet leadership and domestic institutions were often unprepared. Moving beyond debates over the successes and failures of UN diplomatic activities, Reds in Blue offers fresh perspectives on how Soviet citizens became citizens of the world and advocated for opening up Soviet society in ways that transcended Cold War categories without abandoning a sense of loyalty to their homeland. In doing so, it recaptures a space where East and West worked together towards a future without international conflict in the years before détente. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Joe Biden took office with a big ambition: To repair America's reputation abroad and set the country on a new path, where foreign policy would be crafted with the middle class in mind. What You Need to Know is about the internationalist globalist movement. The United Nations is a gigantic bureaucracy, and so is the European Union. They have their tentacles everywhere. Thousands of American political types are gathering, milking the taxpayers, and utilizing the “sustainable development” framework for their own profit and control. The greatest hoax of all is the implementation of the climate change agenda. Edward Dowd is the Founder Phinance Technologies and author of Cause Unknown: The Epidemic of Sudden Death in 2021 & 2022. Coming from Wall Street, Dowd joins Ed Martin to talk about how his experiences with business higher-ups gave him a nose for lies, and how that informed his understanding of the cover-up surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent vaccine. The vaccine led to far more death and side effects than the “experts” let on. Learn more about Ed Dowd and his book at theyliedpeopledied.com. Ted Malloch, well known author, investor, former diplomat, and businessman, joins Ed on the Pro America Report to talk about TalkAItive, which measures social sentiment across the entire internet. Using algorithms, the program is able to survey all of the major sources and social media sites on the internet to get a holistic and accurate view of public sentiment. They discuss the impact that bots have on sentiment, as well as the state of the Biden administration and Biden's position moving into election year. Learn more at www.tedmalloch.me. Wrap Up: Todd Bensman's Overrun is an extraordinary book about the current crisis at the border. Bensman goes over the Biden administration's catastrophic policies that have left us in this situation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jen's guest today is Professor Scott J. Shapiro, author of the new book FANCY BEAR GOES PHISHING. That's phishing with a PH. But Fancy with an F, as in Fancy Bear, the Russian hack. Subtitled THE DARK HISTORY OF THE INFORMATION AGE, IN FIVE EXTRAORDINARY HACKS. With this book, Scott hopes “that these true-crime stories – some accidental, some not – will engage readers who have little or not prior interest in technology and equip them to read beyond the headlines.” You know Scott from his famous shitposting on Twitter, which he kindly also offers up on Threads. Or, if you're lucky, you've taken a course from him at Yale Law school where he eaks out a meagre existence as the Charles F. Southmayd Professor of Law and Professor of Philosophy. His areas of interest include jurisprudence, international law, constitutional law, criminal law and cybersecurity. He is also Scott the founding director of the Yale CyberSecurity Lab.  Here's some praise for FANCY BEAR GOES PHISHING from author Garrett Graff, “Accessible for regular readers, yet still fun for experts, this delightful book expertly traces the challenge of securing our digital lives and how the optimism of the internet's early pioneers has resulted in an online world today threatened by spies, criminals, and over-eager teen hackers.” In 2017 Scott also co-authored THE INTERNATIONALISTS with Professor Oona Hathaway. And his first book, published in 2011 was called LEGALITY: How a Radical Plan to Outlaw War Remade the World.   Contact Booked Up: You can email Jen & the Booked Up team at: BOOKEDUP@POLITICON.COM or by writing to:  BOOKED UP  P.O. I'm excited to share with you my convo with Kavita Krishnan, Promise Li and Romeo Kokriatski on why the idea of multipolarity needs to be understood & critiqued, and why the left cannot abandon anti-authoritarianism and internationalism. Kavita Krishnan is an Indian Marxist and Feminist who used to be a politburo member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation who made news a few months ago when she resigned over Ukraine. Promise Li is a US-based Hong Konger organizer and part of the Left diaspora collective Lausan. Romeo Kokriatski is a Ukrainian-American journalist, managing editor of the New Voice of Ukraine and co-host of the Ukraine Without Hype podcast. Promise is also a returning guest of the pod, and Romeo's been on a few times as well. Due to Russia's ongoing bombardments of Ukraine, Romeo's power went out towards the end of the episode so we had to continue without him.
