Yörük Işık is a ship spotter who logs all the boats that pass through the narrow Bosphorus Strait near his home in Istanbul, Turkey. In October 2015, he noticed something unusual - Russian military trucks on a civilian ship bound for Syria. The photos he took were the first evidence that Russia was supplying armed forces to support President Bashar al-Assad. It followed months of denial from Moscow that they were planning to engage militarily on the ground in Syria's civil war. Emily Wither speaks to Yörük about how his hobby became a news source.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. Winter is coming. So are the US elections. So how about diplomacy? It is UN Week in New York and before heading to Washington, Ukraine's president's trying to rally support for what he's branded as his “victory plan”. How much support and how much leverage? On the battlefield, Ukraine's on the backfoot in the brutal battle for Pokrovsk in the east but has scored a huge moral blow with its cross border incursion into Kursk. We will begin with France 24's exclusive report from that Russian region. And of course, we will ask our panel if any deal can be struck, whoever the next occupant of the White House and whether it is all down to who sits at the Kremlin. Produced by Alessandro Xenos, Rebecca Gnignati and Mélissa Kalaydjan.

2024-07-12 | It has been said that Russian corruption is Ukraine's greatest ally. But it seems that the interfering bureaucratic mindset of Russian politicians and officials is also a great aid to the Ukrainian war effort. ---------- The Russian parliament adopted a law in July hiking the penalty for the unauthorised use of personal internet devices, and in fact any internet enabled gadgets, by frontline Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine. The new law follows reports the Russian army is experiencing record losses on the frontline. The law classifies possession of devices that allow military personnel to store or send videos, photos or geolocated data via the internet as a grave offense, punishable by up to 15 days detention. It also forbids the transmission of any information that could be used to identify any Russian troops and their whereabouts. There are some fears that this will make it harder to for Ukrainian units to analyse Russian movements, according to Ukrainian open-source investigators. But even if this law cuts both ways, on balance it's likely that Russian soldiers will come off worse. We can guess at it's negative impact by the uproar it has cause among Z-Patriots and bloggers. Yegor Guzenko, also known as the Thirteenth, said in a Telegram post that the entire army relies on internet devices. "But how can office rats understand and know this? Let's let these scumbags of the Duma go to war themselves," he wrote. ---------- Sources and recommended reading: https://www.politico.eu/article/russian-duma-adopts-law-on-punishment-for-soldiers-using-gadgets-on-the-frontline/ https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-july-23-2024 https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidhambling/2024/07/24/russia-plans-to-punish-troops-using-smartphones-in-ukraine/ https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/07/putin-bans-electronic-devices-in-bid-to-stop-russian-military-leaks ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. Political scientist Kathryn Stoner is the Director of the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) at Stanford and an authority on Russian/Ukrainian politics. She says views on the current war depend on which side someone is on: Many Russians and their leader Vladimir Putin say Ukrainians are Russians and have been since the 10th century. Ukrainians strongly disagree, likening the two nations to the U.S. and Great Britain. How the present conflict is resolved has important implications for other former Soviet states and the future of the European Union, as Stoner tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? 2024-08-17 | The disarray in Putin's military command has been exposed by Ukraine's attack in Russia. Zelensky's chief adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak has explained in a recent interview for the British newspaper The Independent that Ukraine's cross-border offensive in the Kursk direction shows Putin has ‘very little control' over Russia's border regions. Shockingly, on Russia state TV, one commentator even suggested that they were lost, and should be abandoned. This idea was shouted down by the other propagandists but is also indicative of the chaos and disarray that is engulfing Putin's failing regime. ---------- Kyiv's army seems able to have exploited poorly-defended Russian positions – but how is this possible? Speculation is rife that embattled governor of the Kursk region may not have used the money provided to fortify the frontier well. It would hardly be a surprise if sub-standard work was carries out because of ‘contracts for friends' and use of substandard materials. Big chunks of the budgets may simply have disappeared into greedy pockets. This exposes the fundamental rot within Putin's ‘vertical' system. According to sources, Ukrainian troops overran two fortified Russian defensive lines, infantry strong points with anti-tank ditches, before pushing up to a dozen miles into Kursk in the early hours of the incursion. After a few days, Ukraine has been able to take the substantial settlement of Sudzha. And despite the scepticism of some commentators, experts and allies, and in refutation of Russian propaganda narratives, Ukraine's forces are still advancing. Thet seems to have a robust plan, and specific objectives, but have been incredibly tight-lipped about what they are. In this case, the uncertainty and speculation help Ukraine (overall), and terrify the Russian ‘elite'. ---------- Sources: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/russia-ukraine-war-kursk-incursion-pokrovsk-b2597391.html https://kyivindependent.com/10-days-of-kursk-from-first-shot-to-capture-of-sudzha/ https://kyivindependent.com/thousands-flee-as-russian-troops-take-one-donetsk-oblast-village-after-another/ https://kyivindependent.com/mick-ryan-on-ukraines-kursk-offensive-high-risk-high-return/ https://kyivindependent.com/ukraine-established-military-administration-in-russias-kursk-oblast/ https://kyivindependent.com/how-ukraines-kursk-incursion-threw-russias-top-propagandists-into-crisis/ https://kyivindependent.com/kursk-incursion-deals-blow-to-putins-prestige-marking-first-ground-invasion-of-russia-since-world-war-ii/ https://kyivindependent.com/ukraine-can-decide-how-to-use-spanish-supplied-equipment-spanish-defense-minister-says/ ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. Leave it to Team Biden to try and capitalize on every news event. If the actual news isn't smoke and mirrors itself, Joe Biden will try to use it to push an agenda. Even the latest capture of 8 ISIS terrorists has The White House eager to use the arrests for the own benefit. In this case to pump up the FBI. What is Europe's next move, what with Ukraine's Kharkiv subjected to a daily pounding from the other side of a Russian border that's just 20 kilometres away? It's in the name of Kharkiv that French President Emmanuel Macron, on a state visit to Germany – with Chancellor Olaf Scholz nodding in agreement – said he would allow French missiles supplied to Ukraine to, as he put it, "neutralise" military targets on Russian soil. That comes on top of talk of French military advisers being sent to the front line. Vladimir Putin was quick to react on Tuesday, with threats against the West as a whole and what sounds like the Baltic states in particular. With Russian troops now on the offensive and Ukraine desperately waiting for supplies of not just missiles but also ammunition and eventually fighter jets, how close is the day when NATO and Russian troops square off on the battlefield? Eleven days out from European elections, how does public opinion feel about it?And what of NATO's biggest member? The United States for now refuses to allow its weaponry to strike inside Russian territory. Can the Alliance speak with one voice at this crucial juncture?Produced by Alessandro Xenos, Rebecca Gnignati and Louise Guibert.

On the heels of the latest aid package for Ukraine from the United States, the Global in the Granite State reached out to one of our exchange alumni, Member of Parliament Nataliya Pipa, from Ukraine to hear about what life is currently like in the country and what this latest round of support will mean for their ongoing fight against Russia. Providing key insights into how the people of Ukraine have proven resilient in the face of this unprovoked war, MP Pipa gives listeners a first hand account of the devastation, while sharing the joy of knowing that people and governments still care about the freedom and future of Ukraine. MP Pipa visited New Hampshire in July of 2021 through the Open World Leadership program, having the opportunity to share best practices with her local counterparts on creating accountability in government. One year later, she was back to thank the people of New Hampshire for their support for her country in the early stages of what is now a three year old war. This compelling conversation will provide listeners with a better understanding of the war, what is at stake, and what Western support means. While some will debate whether or not weakening the Russian Military and its morale is in our own national interest, you cannot deny the importance of this support to Ukraine, from a Ukrainian perspective. Nataliya Pipa has been a Member of Parliament since 2019, representing a western region of Ukraine, including part of the city of Lviv. Prior to becoming a Member of Parliament, she was involved in volunteering, working on the ecological situation in Lviv and fighting illegal constructions. Along with other activists she managed to stop illegal construction and to create a public space “Square of Dignity”.
