Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space. Stephen Thompson | March 17, 2021 If you were to apply one of those "how it started / how it's going" memes to Tiny Desk (home) concerts — which began, it turns out, almost exactly one year ago — you'd have, under "how it's going," the image of pop superstar Justin Bieber as he and his band perform the world premiere of a new song called "Peaches." "Peaches" will exist in a significantly different form when Bieber drops his new album Justice on Friday — the track will feature guest vocals from GIVEŌN and Daniel Caesar — just as "Holy," another song from Justice, opens this set without the presence of guest Chance the Rapper. But Bieber's Tiny Desk set, performed with the aid of We the Band, provides the fullest taste yet (fully 25 percent!) of the singer's sixth album, whose singles have already been streamed hundreds of millions of times. Bieber has had a massive month as he prepares for Justice to drop: March 2021 began with the singer's 27th birthday and recently produced his second career Grammy, as he took the prize for best country duo or group performance for "10,000 Hours" with Dan + Shay. It continues with this, his Tiny Desk debut. Friday, the next chapter officially begins. Our guest today is Rory Kramer, and how he climbed the ranks in the content game. From completely lost with no “real” job to over 500 million views on an Avicii music video. He drops a bunch of crazy stories about Justin Bieber, and goes in depth about the night The Chainsmokers met Bieber. This guy is one of our favorite videographers, a psycho we watched jump off a cliff in Hawaii, and an all-round great human. Listen in on Rory’s advice on fear & anxiety, and why he chose “Fear is Only Skin Deep” as his favorite piece. Enjoy!
Rory Kramer, THE photo & video don, has been the creative director for Justin Bieber, The Chainsmokers, Avicii, and more. Recently engaged, he’s boxed Justin Bieber, travelled all over the world, and nearly lost his life in a horrifying car accident. Also, Logan reveals how he got his penis stuck in a pogo stick.
You are about to listen to one of my favorite interviews yet. He is a man who dares to be legendary more than anyone I know. A small town kid from Indiana who had the audacity to dream big. A self taught filmmaker and The Godfather of the creator space. He revolutionized the music video space and has made a huge impact on the way artists create tour content. He has helped create the visual aesthetic for some of the industry’s biggest artists including The Chainsmokers and Justin Bieber and has directed two of their most successful videos of all time racking up over 5 billion plays. He is one of the best story tellers I have ever met and boy are you in for a treat.
We sat down with videographer, photographer and life-liver and discussed his rise from making videos of his classmates to touring the world with the biggest musicians of our time. We talk about fear and whats on the other side of it, we also dig into what Rory's plans are for the future and what lessons we can take from the past. Today we’re getting an inside look at MVMT’s office in Playa Vista, CA with their Brand Director Blake Pinsker aka "Blakey P" for Episode 4 of What They DON’T See. Originally from Valencia, CA, Blake got a message from MVMT’s Co-Founder Jake Kassan (Ep 113) with an opportunity to help build this watch brand from the ground up in 2013. Having just recently graduated from San Diego State University and bouncing from job to job, he jumped on the opportunity and went all in. One of their early brand building strategies was to work with creatives that lived their philosophy of living life on your own terms. They’ve built some incredible relationships with content creators Sam Kolder, That One Blond Kid (Ep 71), Matt Komo (Ep 105), Jacob Riglin (Ep 108), Rory Kramer (Ep 110) and more. Fast forward to August of 2018, MVMT announced they were to be acquired by Movado Group for $100 Million. Today they now offer eyewear and jewelry for both guys & gals. When Rory Kramer was last on the show three years ago, he was already a professional 'life-liver' expressing himself creatively and doing what he loved. And with so many different projects and opportunities coming his way since then, time has flown by for him and has allowed him to grow exponentially in all areas of his life. Perhaps one of the most important things he's been reminded of time and time again, and something we would all do well to do, is to dare to live the life we want. As Rory will tell you, just because you reach a certain level of fame doesn't mean you won't be faced with challenges, insecurities, and down-moments. In fact, they may even become more pronounced when you compare them to all the highlight you experience. But regardless of what life throws at you, if you show up, put in time, live what you do passionately, and 'run it' every day, great things will happen and incredible experiences will present themselves in your life. To hear what Rory's been up to for the past three years, lessons he's learned from fame and storytelling, and other insights into what 'living life professionally' and daring to live looks like, check out Mark and Rory's interview on Episode 224 of People Being Real! Matas is a 20 year old photographer from Los Angeles. He has worked with some of my favorite creators like Yes Theory, Rory Kramer, Thatoneblondkid and Matt Komo. All of this started with a single e-mail he sent a few years ago. I think this story alone makes this episode worth listening. We both challenged ourselves by doing this podcast. Because it is my first podcast in English and Matas shares his own story for the first time ever on a platform like this.

Rory Kramer is a professional videographer and life liver. In the past he’s worked for Justin Bieber, Kanye West and The Chainsmokers. He is the creator behind MTV’s Dare to Live, a show forcing music stars like Shawn Mendes, Martin Garrix and Khalid out of their comfort zones. Born and raised in Tell City, Indiana, his father owned a restaurant and his mother was a nurse. Spending his summers in Clear Lake, Indiana, his Lake Life videos ultimately became the foundation for his career. Although he was sure that video was what he wanted to do, his father influenced him to attend Indiana University. Eventually he moved out to Los Angeles, CA where he took the first job that he could find. What seemed like a good 6-month gig quickly turned into 4 years. He hated the job so much he would sneak vodka through a water bottle into work. With an opportunity to create videos for 3LAU, an american DJ, he left his job and never went back. It isn’t pure luck he is where he is today, as he would say… “I put in my damn time!” His life motto, RUN IT!, is a reminder for us to all continue pushing forward even when fear tries to hold us back. In this episode Rory discusses that if you want something you have to earn it, taking care of ourselves helps us be prepared mentally, being aware of how much social media we consume, a near death accident rolling his car changed his perspective and the importance of listening to your thoughts. - If you enjoy this podcast, please screenshot it & post it to your Instagram Story tagging @RoryKramer & @PurposeintheYouth. Matt Komo is a filmmaker and creative director. Previously the Head of Social Content at GoPro, today he works alongside brands such as Mvmt and helps them visually bring their message to life. It’s not pure luck he is where he is today, it’s been 10+ years of sweat equity. Born and raised in Orange County, CA he picked up a camera after getting injured pole vaulting his sophomore year of high school. With interests to continue pursuing the passion, he attended Chapman University majoring in Film Production & Advertising. After graduating he went north to San Francisco to work for his dream company, GoPro. He helped out with The Chainsmokers Closer music video which sits at 2.1 Billion views today. Creatively he gets inspired by people like Rory Kramer who has become a good friend of his. What he’s most grateful for today is that he's created a life where he gets to do what he wants on daily basis. In this episode he discusses the importance of self-awareness, confidence is born from repeated action, “all you gotta do is get on the right train and work your ass off” is the best advice he’s ever received and creating films with purpose. - If you enjoy this podcast, please screenshot and post it to your Instagram Story tagging @MattJKomo & @PurposeintheYouth. Camper Eli Lundy anchors this episode of the CampCast with an awesome interview with Rory Kramer. Rory tours the world as a photographer and videographer for some of the biggest names in music, like the Chainsmokers and Justin Bieber. Rory shares some stories from his time on the road, what drives him and his advice for kids out there about conquering their fears and being their best selves.
Nainoa Langer is a videographer who gets to travel the world and capture some breathtaking moments. Being raised in Moloaki, Hawaii, an island with 7,000 people on it he figured out early on that he wanted to experience more and always had the itch to see what else was out there. In order to get to where he is today it’s taken a bit of confidence, hard work and following his stoke. Having no direction of what he wanted to do after high school he attended Honolulu Community College for three semesters pursuing welding. With an offer to work at a local hospital and make good money he decided to leave school and start a career. While on break from work in between his shifts he would go on hikes or cliff jumping with his friends, capture it with his GoPro and upload it to YouTube. After three years of doing something he truly did not enjoy, he quit with 0 plan as to what he was going to do next. From this moment going forward, his life took a turn and it was a good one. Nainoa had the opportunity to shoot The Chainsmokers and meet one of his biggest inspirations, Rory Kramer. Sam Kolder who was really breaking waves on the internet creating travel vlogs invited him out to New York City to help out with a project for Beautiful Destinations. Within days of arriving to the city he was booked to go with the team outside of the country which was his first time leaving the U.S. Since then, he’s traveled to over 18+ different countries and works heavily with BD. In this episode Nainoa discusses wanting to inspire people through his content, one of his favorite quotes “it’s better to live 30 years full of adventures than a 100 years safe in the corner” by Jim Rohn, it’s okay to not know what you’re doing because it’s all a process, love the highs and the lows because that’s part of the journey and why it’s important to follow your stoke. - You can follow Nainoa here: Instagram YouTube Facebook Subscribe to our YouTube Channel for new interviews (and more) Follow us on Spotify Follow us on Soundcloud Subscribe to iTunes Follow us on Instagram Follow Bobbbaaaay on social media: Instagram Twitter
Jeremiah Davis aka “That One Blond Kid” spends half of the year living in Venice Beach, CA and the other half traveling as a videographer & content creator for influencers, brands and artists. Raised in Claremont, CA he was surrounded by three older brothers and a very supportive family. Baseball was one of his early passions and by the time he made it to college he tossed the towel in and focused on his camera. His life took a turn when he slid through the DM of Rory Kramer, a professional videographer and brought him value by shooting drone footage for him. He would go on to connect with Dave Lingwood, a member of MTV’s The Buried Life and was soon traveling the world with The Chainsmokers with full creative control. Back in September of 2017 his Snapchat Discover Series “Without Limits” launched which was him and his friends traveling around the world pushing themselves to do unimaginable things that most people wouldn’t dare to do. If you live in Los Angeles look up in the sky because you might see him jumping out of a plane or even a hot air balloon. — You can follow Jeremiah here: Instagram: @ThatOneBlondKid (https://www.instagram.com/thatoneblondkid/) Twitter: @ThatOneBlondKid (https://twitter.com/ThatOneBlondKid) YouTube: That One Blond Kid (https://www.youtube.com/user/jeremiahdavis4) Website: (http://thatoneblondkid.com) Subscribe to our YouTube Channel for new interviews (and more) weekly: http://bit.ly/2zprpon Follow us on Soundcloud: http://bit.ly/2hcSBws Subscribe to iTunes: http://apple.co/2yE0u9l Follow us on social media: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2j82AHF Follow Bobbbaaaay on social media: Instagram: http://bit.ly/2Ap24ce Twitter: http://bit.ly/2hj6Ljm
