The Story of a Brand
Abbott NYC - Fragrances Inspired by Beautiful Destinations

The Story of a Brand

This episode is brought to you by Sendlane.   Know one knows better than yourself what your brand or business is about, says Jose Alvarez, Co-founder of Abbott NYC, a company that makes clean fragrances inspired by beautiful destinations.   "I think the most powerful brands are authentic," Jose says. "In today's world, a lot of that authenticity comes from the founders and their beliefs and values."   Jose recalls the highs and lows of the brand's launch, calling it an "emotional rollercoaster." Meditation proved to be the key to coping with the pressure.   "I meditate in the mornings every day," he says. "I have a journal where I journal different thoughts, different ideas. I think having a co-founder or even a person you trust is advantageous. They can bounce ideas off. I found that that's helpful."   Forward momentum - "action" - is one of the most important things not only in business but in life in general, Jose says.   "It's quite easy to just stay in your head and get down on things," he says. "But nothing gets done in the world, your life, or your business if you don't take action."   Abbott NYC began with four fragrances: Mojave, Telluride, Sequoia, and The Cape. Jose says he likes to focus on a memory for a specific location when coming up with the scents. It can take three to six months to develop a new fragrance.   In Part 2, Jose talks about:   * Advice for fellow entrepreneurs starting a brand. * The importance of staying even-keeled. * How meditation helped with the stress of the startup. * The importance of having a trusted friend or co-founder to bounce ideas off of. * A look at the brand's products. * The process of creating a scent.   Join Ramon Vela and Jose Alvarez as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Abbott NYC, visit: https://abbottnyc.com/    Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. Karyn Gruenberg is senior vice president of partner marketing and strategic alliances at Brand USA, the public/private partnership whose mission is to increase international visitation spend and market share in order to fuel the nation’s economy and enhance the image of the USA worldwide. In this position, Karen is responsible for leading partner marketing efforts as well as building global strategic alliances to leverage the combined resources and expertise of the industry. Her leadership includes development and oversight of all partner-driven marketing programs and key global media alliances that add and create value for partners, amplify partners, international reach and drive, inbound visitor travel and tourism dollars to all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the five territories. Among her many accomplishments at Brand USA, Karen established a core partner program strategy that today includes more than 100 programs and 200 opportunities and key media partnerships with BBC, National Geographic, Bloomberg, and Your Own News and Alibaba to name a few. Prior to joining brand USA, Karen led the marketing effort for Meet Minneapolis, the premier Tourism and Convention Marketing Organization of the Greater Minneapolis region. As part of the leadership team, she was instrumental in securing major sponsorships for the city as well as directing all advertising, public relations, digital development, and creative services to market the city. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota and pursued a Master in Business Communications at the University of Saint Thomas, Minnesota. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I ask Karyn to walk us through the many programs available through Brand USA, and how local attractions and destinations can take full advantage of them. We talk co-op marketing, storytelling, and much more – all geared toward the international visitor.   What You Will Learn in This Episode: How Brand USA uses co-op marketing to bring large-scale messages down to the local level Why storytelling is such a powerful tool in our industry How affordable marketing to international visitors can be The power of proximity campaigns Why coopetition is one of your best tools to bring international visitors to your region Finding The Difference How do you market an entire nation? Karyn and I talk about how Brand USA takes a larger message like “Enjoy the Great Outdoors” and helps local destinations craft a message for international audiences. This happens in many different ways. There are fairly traditional co-op campaigns and there are new and exciting storytelling programs, like the one that Brand USA is rolling out with partner Beautiful Destinations called United Stories. And if you haven’t utilized Brand USA’s Inspiration Guide, now is your chance to learn more about it and put it to use for your destination. Bang for Your Buck The value of the dollar is a key advantage for international travelers. Even though over the past year value has dropped a little bit, it’s still a good buy. Karyn talks about proximity campaigns being developed by Brand USA. Proximity campaigns give regions dollars and ideas to use in order to market to international visitors. You can experience Niagara Falls, the Finger Lakes, and New York City, all within a short drive. Karyn talks with me about how proximity marketing is being used all around the country to highlight the amazing sights and activities available in a given region. Nainoa Langer is a videographer who gets to travel the world and capture some breathtaking moments. Being raised in Moloaki, Hawaii, an island with 7,000 people on it he figured out early on that he wanted to experience more and always had the itch to see what else was out there. In order to get to where he is today it’s taken a bit of confidence, hard work and following his stoke. Having no direction of what he wanted to do after high school he attended Honolulu Community College for three semesters pursuing welding. With an offer to work at a local hospital and make good money he decided to leave school and start a career. While on break from work in between his shifts he would go on hikes or cliff jumping with his friends, capture it with his GoPro and upload it to YouTube. After three years of doing something he truly did not enjoy, he quit with 0 plan as to what he was going to do next. From this moment going forward, his life took a turn and it was a good one. Nainoa had the opportunity to shoot The Chainsmokers and meet one of his biggest inspirations, Rory Kramer. Sam Kolder who was really breaking waves on the internet creating travel vlogs invited him out to New York City to help out with a project for Beautiful Destinations. Within days of arriving to the city he was booked to go with the team outside of the country which was his first time leaving the U.S. Since then, he’s traveled to over 18+ different countries and works heavily with BD. In this episode Nainoa discusses wanting to inspire people through his content, one of his favorite quotes “it’s better to live 30 years full of adventures than a 100 years safe in the corner” by Jim Rohn, it’s okay to not know what you’re doing because it’s all a process, love the highs and the lows because that’s part of the journey and why it’s important to follow your stoke. - You can follow Nainoa here: Instagram YouTube Facebook   Subscribe to our YouTube Channel for new interviews (and more) Follow us on Spotify Follow us on Soundcloud Subscribe to iTunes Follow us on Instagram   Follow Bobbbaaaay on social media: Instagram Twitter
