This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we're talking to James Wallis about his forthcoming book Everybody Wins. It's a fantastic book that charts the recent history of board games through the lens of the forty-three winners of the German Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) award, from 1979 to 2022. We also talk a little bit about RPGs as well — how could we not, as James was behind Hogshead Publishing and their New Style series of RPGs (we're going to have him back to talk at length about The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen, promise). * * * Everybody Wins is in stores on March 14 — pre-order it now on Amazon (and pretty much everywhere else, too). You can also check out the Everybody Wins Podcast. James has a couple other audio/visual projects of interest. Ludonarrative Dissidents, with Greg Stolze and Ross Payton, is a podcast that looks at a different RPG every episode, while Inside the Rookery, is a weekly stream on RPG and storytelling in geek spaces. You can further interface with James on Twitter, on Mastodon, through his outdated website or on Drive-Thru.
For both seasons of Ross Payton, Greg Stolze, and James Wallis' RPG podcast Ludonarrative Dissidents, Tech Diff has supported their Kickstarter. Because of this, we were able to sit down with James and Greg for a game. For season one, James ran a game for Greg and Ethan, of an in development RPG called Nancy Drow.Unfortunately there were hiccups with James' audio, but we had a lovely time regardless. And, as this is a playtest, it takes some time to get going as we go through character generation on mic.A pair of youths in a world of fantasy heroism have to live without any super powers or fighting skills. What seems like a simple purse-snatching turns into a much bigger problem...Nancy Drow is still in development. HP Lovecraft is undoubtedly a driving force in the ever-changing face of horror in the modern age. While but one of a movement, his works changed the basic inspirations of horror from a universe of divine punishment doled out by monsters to a universe that couldn't be bothered to care if you lived or died. His talk of ancient powerful beings from worlds beyond the stars and the insignificance of mankind were fantastical and horrifying in ways the stories of vengeful monsters couldn't be. In the modern age, Lovecraft's work is still highly influential, but the original stories are a bit lacking in modern sensibilties. We discuss those who took inspiration from Lovecraft and made horror exceptionally weird. Matt and Ross Payton from Role Playing Public Radio hosted this panel at Gen Con 2016. Gen Con 2015: Matt Campen and Ross Payton sat down and talked about their shared experiences designing, publishing, and producing roleplaying games. Game Design is a long and tedious process. Turning a pile of notes into a book can seem nearly impossible. This panel explores the essential steps to consider when looking at your loose-chicken-parts collective of ideas and a formula to turn it into some chicken salad goodness. It’s Monsters Friday again, bringing you an oldie from the early days of The Drunk and the Ugly, through a ransom event with RPPR’s own Ross Payton. It through these games that we ended up bringing in Sam and Charlie eventually. In this adventure, following their victory over the Ur-Monster in the summer road trip, the daring Jimmy McPherson and Roy Ackerman receive an invitation to visit Cal Novelties, a wonderful toy factory whose owner has just passed and named them the successors to his toy throne, allowing them to become testers and designers. PLAYERS Bob (DracoStrife) – Jimmy McPherson. Little 10-year-old person of becoming a famous comic book artist. Comes up with brilliant plans and not-so-great execution. Chris (Wooberman) – Mr. Smacky. Mixed Martial Artist from hell, literally. Has a giant orange body made completely from muscle. Both hands are big red boxing gloves and wears matching Boxing Gloves. Simple minded and fairly kind-hearted. Charlie – Roy Ackerson. A wealthy boy born to a rich family whose parents were lost in a tragic train crash. One night a bat flew in his window and he knew at that point that he had to become a necromancer to resurrect them. Matt – Nanaho Yoneda. A kindly old Japanese ghost summoned accidentally by Roy when he tried to bring his parents back from the dead. Very quiet and shy and acts as Roy’s protector whenever possible. Sometimes she gets angry. The post MaOCT – Requiem for a Toy Factory with Ross Payton appeared first on The Drunk and The Ugly.
A vessel is making its way across the ocean, filled with a band of intrepid explorers. They have a dinner party with destiny in their future. This isn’t a game played by the Drunk and Ugly! Ross Payton of Role Playing Public Radio was kind enough to run a playtest of Sordid Dystopia for the RPPR group. Needless to say, madness ensued. It was fantastic. PLAYERS Tom – Kristoff, a Xexorian pirate and thief. Constantly stealing everything that isn’t bolted down. Caleb – McShanahan Cumbersnatch, a New-age Naturalist, going to connect political ties with Vontier. Incredibly lucky. Sara – Clockwork Octavia, a noble Xexorian farmer. Jason – Jean-Claude, a Vontais pirate. Drew – Takashi, a Cizok Aristocrat and Hunter. Eager to claim land for his proud country. Aaron – Winthrop, a Xexorian miner. Has dynamite. Thad – Ares, a tribal outlander. Talks like Clint Eastwood. David – Maximillian McManus, an aristocrat who owns a Menagerie of Monocles. And the Frieda’s Season Premiere continues with Part 2: Middle School. Spring Crescent is, on the surface, perfectly normal. Normal things happen, normal teachers conduct utterly normal classes, and no one gets sucked into a Lovecraftian alien’s spaceship. Secrets lurk below the surface, of course. Secrets that hide behind walls and coat closets, secrets that want to spread and steal and hurt. Emma, Scott, and Jingles are dropped directly into this tangled mess. Joined by the psychic girl Molly, who survived her own ghost story, our plucky Middle Schoolers will face down evil. Spring Crescent draws upon the source material in Ross Payton’s Curriculum of Conspiracy, which can be found at http://arcdream.com/. Hello there, Internet! Somewhat long time, and, uh. . . infinitely no see. One of these days we should do a webcam thing so that we can rectify that. UNTIL THEN, though, you will have to make due with our wondrous vocal patterns. Listen to these MP3s while looking at the spectral view. It’ll blow your mind, seriously. Wow, that got off-topic fast. In any case, do we have some news for you: First and foremost, the Sordid Dystopia Kickstarter is doing amazingly well. I applaud all of you who are backing us presently. I never expected us to reach our initial funding goal in under a day, or twice our funding goal in under a week, and I never expected us to be talking about reaching almost triple our funding goal before this project ended. Seriously, you guys are the best. Second, Nate and I did a roundtable discussion of Monsters and Other Childish Things with one Ross Payton. He apparently does a roleplaying podcast too. We’re going to be in their 70th Episode “There’s Monsters in the School, Tom.” The episode isn’t yet out, but it should be out shortly after this episode goes live. I figured I just needed to get the word out on this Role Playing Public Radio show Ross and his friend Tom do. Thirdly, Nate got us all into the Little Fears Nightmare Edition recently. We’ve played 8 sessions of a campaign composed of prefab adventures from the books, the Campfire Tales series, and things that we’ve written ourselves. It’s shaping up to be a pretty rad set of things and hopefully it’ll be totally awesome when it gets posted here eventually. What this means for your right now is that we have a whole bunch of Little Fears goodies for every one of our listeners: Nate recently wrote a scenario for a contest run by Little Fears superfan Jack O’Tears. The theme of the contest was Duality, and Nate wrote a whole adventure about a Monster and a child who complete each other. You can get the adventure here or go to the Little Fears Facebook Group and take it from there. It had to be fairly short, so be prepared to improv or write a couple things and make it your own for your group. He also ran a quick playtest of it and we will be posting the AP to our […] The post The Drunk and the Newsies – 2-14-2012 appeared first on The Drunk and The Ugly.
Recently, members of the Drunk and Ugly (joined by RPPR listener Patrick) got to play a game of Road Trip run by Ross Payton himself, as part of their Killsplosion Kickstarter! Welcome to Sunny Vale, a beautiful city that finds itself in the grips of constant monster attacks. The only thing standing in the way of Sunny Vale’s total destruction are the Sentai Rangers – martial artists and ninjas with a fondness for brightly colored outfits. Sunny Vale’s protectors are not all they seem, however – secrets hide behind the masks of the Sentai Rangers, secrets that must be uncovered at any cost. PLAYERS Patrick – Tommy Mezlowski. A quiet kid who likes to act out. Sam – Flytrap Joe. Tommy’s monster, a giant fractal flytrap with infinite heads. Charlie – Ralph “Dog” Jones. A street-smart homeless kid who doesn’t like people to know his secret Matt – Mister Whispers. Dog’s monster, a giant swarm of rats that wants to know ALL THE SECRETS. Picture in your mind a far off time ago: Before the AP Site, the Podcast, and even back before this group existed. Way, way back in December of 2010, Sean and I were playing Minecraft together, and he told me that he was interested in playing Monsters and Other Childish things. At the time, I was running the Road Trip campaign for my friends nearby, and I had written a few side scenarios that I wanted to test out. I told Sean about these, and he sounded interested. He contacted his friend Nate and got him somewhat interested. At the same time, I met Alex through another Minecraft server and asked him if he’d like to play along in some short games with Sean and his (at the time) unknown friend. Over the coming week, I would talk to each person about the characters they’d want to make, and by the end, we had Max Chang (the asian mathelete extraordinare), Daniel Kerington (the hero with as much courage as he has not-brains), and Charlie Bale (the lovable douchebag). In the discussion portion of the first game, we also talked up BattlePet Network, a stupid little TV show about training monsters and saving the world through card games. As for the full setting, we’re playing Ross Payton’s Road Trip, which is basically a Summer Road Trip to save the world from an evil cult. This setting is wildly different from the standard Monsters and Other Childish Things setting in a lot of ways: It’s set during the summer, so no one has to go to school It’s a series of adventures all around the country Less imperative is placed on the “being a kid” aspect, and more on over-the-top goofy action and fun It is very story-driven One of the reasons that I loved Road Trip when I was starting out with Monsters is that it’s a fully-written campaign. If you don’t know what your player-base is, Monsters is kind of a bear to write for. Road Trip simplifies things a lot by basically being a D&D campaign set in the Monsters Universe. It’s a series of small adventures all around the country which add up to stopping a big bad evil guy. And it’s a whole lot of fun. Why is this session called “Session 0”? Because this entire adventure is non-canon. As I said, I wanted to playtest some […] The post Road Trip Session 0 – Ed’s Diner appeared first on The Drunk and The Ugly.
