Why does every D&D session eventually turn into: 5% storytelling, 10% rolling dice, 85% lying to NPCs and starting fires? In this week's RPGBOT.Podcast, we dive into the mechanics of deception, the ethics of lying, and why arson is the unofficial party pastime. Tune in for laughs, insights, and a light-hearted debate about why your characters can't stop lighting things on fire. SUMMARY In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts dive headfirst into the tangled web of deception mechanics in role-playing games, with a focus on Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. They explore the nuances of lying, from the rules of deception and insight checks to the moral and mechanical implications of bending the truth in-game. Key topics include: Passive vs. Active Skills: What's the difference, and why does it matter when your rogue is trying to bluff their way into a royal banquet? The Ethics of Deception: When is it just role-play, and when is it too much? Spoiler alert: It involves a bard and a dragon. Player Agency vs. Simplified Rules: How do new editions balance ease of use with meaningful gameplay, and what does it mean for deception-heavy campaigns? Session Zero Magic: Why setting expectations early can prevent your party from devolving into a group of pyromaniac con artists. Sprinkled with hilarious anecdotes of chaotic character antics and light-hearted debates on topics like "the prevalence of arson in RPGs," this episode is a must-listen for players and DMs alike. Whether you're a veteran tabletop gamer or just figuring out why your bard keeps trying to seduce everyone, this discussion will leave you laughing—and maybe questioning your party's motives. LINKS d20SRD.org - Skills Archives of Nethys - Deception 2024 Player's Handbook Other Stuff Lou Diamond Phillips EPISODE TAKEAWAYS Communication is key to a cohesive RPG experience, especially in the digital age. Deception in RPGs is nuanced, with varying definitions that impact gameplay. Insight and deception mechanics differ across game editions, offering unique challenges. Player agency is crucial for meaningful outcomes in deception scenarios. Active skills like Insight enhance engagement, while passive skills can hinder storytelling. Simplified rules can sometimes create confusion rather than clarity. Charisma often plays a central role in deception mechanics. Rolling for checks is generally more engaging than relying on passive assessments. Secret rolls can heighten tension and unpredictability in gameplay. Failure should remain an option to keep gameplay dynamic and engaging. Pathfinder 2's approach to deception mechanics feels more dynamic compared to D&D 5e. Session Zero is vital for aligning player and DM expectations about deception and storytelling. High passive skills can reduce tension, diminishing the stakes of deception. Humor and unexpected character actions often add depth to gameplay. Arson is a hilariously recurring theme in many RPG campaigns. Game mechanics should always serve the story, not hinder it. Context is critical in deception checks—mechanics alone aren't enough. Players are often willing to believe lies that work in their favor. Understanding player motivations enhances storytelling and gameplay. A good balance between humor and strategy enriches the gaming experience. Player Agency describes the power of players to make choices for their characters. There is an unspoken social contract around every RPG table that the DM won't take these choices away and players won't use these choices to ruin the fun of the DM. In this episode, I talk about how critical it is that both sides of the screen respect the agency of others. #dmtips #gmtips #dnd #5e #pf2e #playeragency Resources: https://techraptor.net/originals/playing-roles-psychology-of-player-agency https://medium.com/@camauger/the-power-of-choice-player-agency-in-tabletop-role-playing-games-446e0be16428

What is Player Relevance? On today's episode we'll answer the question “What is Player Relevance?” Players play games for multiple different reasons. Many of those reasons have to do with their sense of intrinsic or extrinsic motivation. No matter the reason, all players play games because they find them relevant. For themselves, as well as for their player character, and through their journey throughout the game.If you liked this episode please consider commenting, sharing, and subscribing.Subscribing is absolutely free and ensures that you'll get the next episode of Experience Points delivered directly to you.I'd also love it if you took some time to rate the show!I live to lift others with learning. This Episode will look at Player Agency in LARP. Player Agency is how much control a player has over what their character does, or doesn't do in a LARP. Some LARP give you near total agency over your character, while others are more linear and restrict what a player can do in the opposite direction.
In this episode, Lee chats with Stephen Hensel, a gamemaster and writer, about how to balance game plot and player agency through a variety of means. From the sandbox to the initial start with counters to the "pick your own railroad"!
Danger is an ever-present Theme in Tabletop Roleplaying, constantly Characters face off against Mages, Demons, and Dragons in stories that put the fate of an entire world on the line. Player Characters put themselves on the line to fight off a villain, save a town from destruction, and destroy a magical artifact, they face danger every day in TTRPGs, but why is that? That is exactly what we answer today. We discuss why it is dangerous situations that put everything on the line that we crave so much when playing D&D and TTRPGs. Danger often means Challenges, Risks, and Choices, these things create Player Agency and Drama, two things we desperately seek when playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. And we will discuss exactly how you can create Drama-filled Moments of Bold Choices, Incredible Storytelling, and Risky Action using Danger in today's episode! What is Kingmaking? On today's episode we'll answer the question “What is Kingmaking?” Sometimes you'll play a competitive game where you realize that you can't win anymore. It's kind of depressing to think about. However, there are things that you can do and actions that you can take that will help someone else win. What is Player Agency? On today's episode we'll answer the question: “What is Player Agency?”Player agency is about giving our players the time, space, and resources needed in order to make decisions in games. But is that is the only thing that agency provides to players? Is agency even a good thing? If so, then what amount of agency is the right amount to give to players? How should players navigate this agency? And how should they go about making decisions in the game? In this episode Saul and Jolene talk about Railroads and Player Agency. It would seem the two are diametrically opposed but Railroads don't have to be the GM's draconian story where the players are there just to enjoy the ride and roll some dice. One way for a Railroad type of game to lose sight of the tracks is to have player agency. Where players actions and ideas impact the story. It makes for a more difficult game for the GM to run but the payoff is a more fun for all players of the game. As always Thanks for listening and please share our podcast. Lex discusses reskinning or redesigning a class that doesn’t fit your campaign instead of removing it. Just as the classes available to play in a campaign set the tone & flavor for the campaign, so too can you achieve a specific goal through the PC races & subraces you allow (or don’t allow). Lex also talks about using material from previous editions in 5th edition and moving beyond simple binary pass/fail in your D&D game. Finally Lex talks about player agency and why player perception is far more important than the amount of agency they do or don’t have.

Player Agency - the most important part of any RPG
Jim Pinto is an experienced and influential game designer who has some thought provoking opinions about the state of the art in role playing games. One of his opinions is that as D&D has evolved as a game, that the role of game master has become more like "work" and less like "play" and that there is an imbalance in player expectations and game master responsibilities. We discuss this phenomenon, the concept of agency in role playing games, and the dynamics of the DM to Player social compact. What do you think the proper role of the game master is? I give my answer in this episode, but I'd love to hear yours. If a player wants to write the back-story for their character's home village. That's cool, right? If, during session 0, they suggest that the world you're about to play in should have no magic at all. Is that cool? What if they recommend that the villain of your campaign should be seeking revenge on another Player's Character? Players and DMs are always working together to tell a collaborative story, but it CAN be unclear where the line between DM agency and Player Agency should be drawn. We discuss this and more, this week on Dungeons & Tangents.
