We wrap up #FANuary - where listeners chose what we watched across all our social media accounts - with Larry Cohen's 1976 classic GOD TOLD ME TO! Cohen's strange odyssey of a New York police detective whose investigation yields way more than he ever bargained for is truly a genius piece of cinema that only Larry Cohen could have created! Filled with an incredible cast (Academy Award winner Sandy Dennis, Andy Kaufman, Deborah Raffin, Tony Lo Bianco, and Richard Lynch from New World's DEATHSPORT, but, more importantly, BAD DREAMS) that rivals that of 1981's THE FOUR SEASONS, New World took two turns at releasing the film, which led to a fraught relationship between Cohen and New World head honcho Roger Corman., We discuss that along with other pressing questions, such as: how did Marc and Ryan's family feel about the TV show Space: 1999, what role Brad Dourif might have played, and debate whether walking barefoot in an airport is the same as doing so in a city. Don't miss out on our #FANuary finale! Just accept it, no questions! For all the shows in Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network, head here:  https://www.someonesfavoriteproductions.com/

Time to pay another visit to the Dungeon of Directors, and unleash a variety of cult horrors. Writer, director, producer, Larry Cohen just had a knack for taking ideas and fleshing them out. Making something that sounds ridiculous, much more compelling and fun than it has any right to be.The Davis family is expecting, and the pregnancy seems so perfect. Until the baby is much more monstrous than expected, and goes on a crawling killing spree in It's Alive (1974)! A series of murders in New York City, committed by people who seemingly have no connection, all provide the same response when asked why they did it: God Told Me To (1976). And then from there, are you eating it, or is it eating you? There's a new dessert treat craze sweeping the nation, but it seems to have a mind-altering effect on those who consume it. This week Josh and Drusilla discuss 2015's Polish horror mermaid musical, The Lure. From Wikipedia: "The Lure (Polish: Córki dancingu, lit.'Daughters of Dancing') is a 2015 Polish horror musical film directed by Agnieszka Smoczyńska. It tells of two mermaids who emerge from the waters and perform in a nightclub. One falls in love with a man, and gives up her tail, but loses her voice in the process. The story is a reworking of the 1837 fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen, with inspiration from Smoczyńska's experiences. After a Polish premiere, the film screened at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and Fantasia Film Festival, to mixed reviews."But first! Drusilla hates Raging Bull and Josh being dumb about Scorsese.  The apartment that the Last Temptation of Christ bought,  God Told Me To, Watcher, The Tenant, and more. Then they get into the feature, which they both love. They discuss its release and distribution by Janus, how it doesn't feel like the 80s, the immigration allegory vs the trans allegory,  Dru compares it to Cat People, the terrible things we do for dick, the politics of aging and beauty, Josh hates dolphins, more Cat People and the Czech film Daisies. When Josh brings up Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the pair get into problematic trans narratives in film which covers Silence of the Lambs, Dressed to Kill, She-Man, and Dog Day Afternoon.  Then they wrap up with Have They Seen It? This week sees another episode of our Movie Gifts podcast. It's like Secret Santa but for movies—each participant picks a title for another that the recipient hasn't seen. It's a fun way to share enthusiasms and gain new insights on old favorites. For this round, Film Comment co-deputy editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute invited FC contributor Nathan Lee and former FC editor Gavin Smith, two longtime friends, who were eager to assign each other movies. For Gavin, Nathan selected Paul W. S. Anderson's action-packed 2008 remake Death Race. For Nathan, Gavin chose Larry Cohen's 1976 apocalyptic sci-fi stunner God Told Me To. Devika and Clint were a little less considerate to each other: Clint gifted Devika the toxic 1979 football drama North Dallas Forty, while Devika gifted Clint her childhood favorite, Baby's Day Out, a madcap live-action cartoon about a sadistic baby running wild in the streets. Chelsea Stardust  @chelseastardust Chelsea Stardust has been a horror film fan since the age of 10 when her father showed her George Romero's Night of the Living Dead and Tod Browning's Dracula. When she wasn't racing sled dogs in the snowy Midwest, Chelsea consumed all the cinema she could get her hands on. During high school she attended night classes at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where she assisted filmmaker Robert Banks Jr. in shooting Super 8 experimental horror films. Robert also introduced her to films like Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Larry Cohen's God Told Me To and Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes.   After high school, Chelsea attended Ohio University's Honors Tutorial College School of Film program where she focused on Directing. Upon graduating, Chelsea moved to sunny Los Angeles to pursue her filmmaking dreams. After working for comedy legends Ivan Reitman and Judd Apatow, Chelsea found her horror home at Blumhouse Productions (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister, The Purge, Get Out, Split, Us) where she served as the executive assistant to Jason Blum for several year. She also shadowed Adam Robitel on the 2018 Blumhouse film Insidious:The Last Key.   Since leaving her post at Blumhouse Productions, Chelsea started directing full time. Chelsea released four short films on Crypt TV, Slay Per View, Marco Polo, Project Hope, Under The Bed, which have exceeded over 1M views. She also directed a horror/musical/comedy for the stage titled Slashed! The Musical for the 2017 Hollywood Fringe Festival, which was nominated for Best Musical,  Screamiest Show and won the Encore Award. She also directed the holiday-horror radio play Christmas Eve for Earbud Theater, which was released in December 2017 to rave reviews.  Chelsea's first feature film, the science fiction thriller All That We Destroy, was part of the Blumhouse Into The Dark series and is currently available on Hulu. Greetings and welcome back to Horror Business. We have one awesome episode in store for you guys. In this episode we’re talking about two films involving missionary killers: 1976’s GOD TOLD ME TO and 2001’s FRAILTY First and foremost, we want to give a shoutout to our sponsors over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Also, thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful. Thanks! We start by briefly discussing what we’ve done lately involving horror. Liam talks about seeing the films Knifes And Skin, The Terror, and the trailer for Spirals: The Book Of Saw. Justin talks about the HBO series The Outsider and seeing the films The Turning and Gretel & Hansel.   We talk about some of our favorite scenes in the film, including the scene in which the main character confronts his biological mother on the issue of his conception and she has an emotional breakdown. We go off on another tangent on how the film draws from the concept of “ancient astronaut theory” and how such concepts are inherently racist. We tie it back into the film by examining how the film suggests that divinity and extraterrestrials might not be entirely different but how Cohen never actually says, for certain, that religion was inspired by aliens. We then touch upon the depiction of a murderer talking about his crime in the film and how realistic it is in contrary to some other depictions of them in film in that it is so mundane it becomes unsettling. The somewhat problematic scene in the film where the main character attacks and murders a room full of black men is talked about. Up next is Frailty. We begin by briefly talking about the terror of Powers Booth. We give a brief summary of the film, sing the praises of Bill Paxton, and talk about some of the performances of the film. We talk about how the narrative of the film is framed. The films big reveal and how it’s so intricately layered is touched upon, as is the films overall melancholy nature. The way the film stays deliberately vague on as to whether or not Bill Paxton’s visions are real or not until the end is discussed. We talk about how the film could be seen as analogy for abuse or neglect, in that a child is forced to step up and take responsibility when a parent is clearly not well. The performances of the child actors in relation to Bill Paxton’s are discussed. We talk about our personal histories with the film, lament on the death of Paxton, and the phenomenon of the McConaughnaissance. The lack of a happy ending and how that opens up a terrifying concept is touched upon. The movie’s lack of a definite adherence to the Judeo-Christian God is discussed, as is the commentary on the nature of God and the Devil. Thank you to everyone and anyone who donated on Patreon, checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. This episode, Nick introduces Gavin to the movies of Larry Cohen, the much-loved director of cult films such as Q: The Winged Serpent, It's Alive and The Stuff, who passed away in March 2019. They take a look at Cohen's 1976 feature, God Told Me To, a thriller about New York detective, played by Tony Lo Bianco, investigating a series of random murders in which the suspects all claim that no less than God told them to kill... The film explores themes of Catholicism, guilt, paranoia, sex, intersex, satanic panic, mass hysteria, messiah complexes and much, much more! R.I.P Larry.

The world of cinema has lost some true giants with the deaths of Stanley Donen, Agnes Varda and actor Seymour Cassel in the past few months. But Larry Cohen, one of the most overlooked filmmakers of his generation, also passed away recently. Aside from a few outlier critical voices like Robin Wood, Cohen's work has had a great deal less critical analysis than it deserves. Jay, Azed and guest host Omar Majeed try to do their own small part to rectify this oversight giving particular attention to the films Bone, God Told Me To and It's Alive. A trio of films that make indelible criticisms of race, religion and the nuclear family and expose cracks in the dominant social order with an acuity rarely seen before or since. The hosts also briefly discuss Agnes Varda's death, Julian Assange's arrest and, most importantly, how Omar's recent CSA award really classes up the show. A tastefulness we suspect Cohen would have found oddly inappropriate considering his own stubborn commitment to his status as the ultimate schlockmeister.

The duo discuss Larry Cohen's 1976 maybe-but-not-really horror movie “God Told Me To,” probably the closest Cohen gets to critical respectability. God personally intervenes to try and shut them up for about ten minutes in the form of a loud steam pipe in J.R.'s apartment, but the duo persevere, and, in the literal sense, therefore overcome the will of God. Oh yeah, the movie: glowing hippie aliens and yellow balls of light that can impregnate you. And this is the CLOSEST he came to respectability.

To start with, welcome back and hello to the new listeners, we hope everyone is having fun and taking care of themselves. So this week we find out that NASA forgot to pack enough clothes for the astronauts and that by doing this we failed to see history being made. That’s right folks, we had the first all-female space-walk in history planned and someone messed up. We roast the folks at NASA for messing this up. Hopefully it will be able to happen next time and become a regular practice. Also for those in Brisbane the Queensland Museum has an exhibit of space suits and other items to spend some time dreaming over. Next up we look at the latest on this year’s Video Game Hall of Fame nominations, some are looking good and one is surprising. We take a look at the games already in the Hall and try to find out which is the favourite. Unfortunately Leisure Suit Larry isn’t on the list, neither was there any of the Police Quest, Space Quest or Outrun for Buck. Oh to be so old and to have played so many games as our resident geriatric. Lastly we review the new movie coming out for Dora the Explorer and try to figure out if it is working out to be great or just another in a long line of failures. One thing though is Danny Trejo is involved and we don’t think he has a machete in this movie. Oh well, I guess it is safe for kids to watch then. As usual we have the regular list of shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events of interest. As usual we have a lot of fun bringing you this latest episode of mayhem, so settle in with a cup of earl grey and a biscuit while we bring you some of the news this week in Nerd pop culture. Rounding out the show is the documentary film King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen diving into what made the unique director tick and strive to make films the only way Larry Cohen can. The hunt is on for the diamond in the rough. Doc Rotten from Horror News Radio and Jeff Mohr from Decades of Horror: The Classic Era are joined by Rafe Telsch and Vanessa Thompson.  Gruesome Magazine Podcast - Episode 025 King Cohen - Vidar the Vampire - Hover SHUDDER MOVIE RECOMMENDATION Use my promo code - GRUESOME - for an extended 30-day FREE trial of Shudder to check out Downrange and Still/Born! Hover HOVER takes place in the near future, where environmental strain has caused food shortages around the world. Technology provides a narrow path forward, with agricultural drones maximizing the yield from what land remains. Two compassionate care providers, Claudia (Coleman) and her mentor John (Craig muMs Grant), work to assist sick farmland inhabitants in ending their lives. After John dies under mysterious circumstances, a group of locals helps Claudia to uncover a deadly connection between the health of her clients and the technology they are using.   "I think it has some good performances. I liked Cleopatra Coleman. She wrote Hover and she stars in the lead. … And you can never go wrong with Beth Grant. … I enjoyed it." - Rafe "There’s more depth to the characters … and I thought the effects were pretty decent. … Nice effort. … it’s worth a watch." - Jeff "It’s a solid effort."- Doc Director: Matt Osterman Cast: Cleopatra Coleman, Shane Coffey, Craig muMs Grant Vidar the Vampire A Christian farmer searching for a higher purpose to life falls into sin and wakes up as the Prince of Darkness in the city of Stavanger, Norway. "I’ve enjoyed several of the Norwegian horror movies that have come out in the last few years. The humor hits me right and Vidar the Vampire did the same thing … and it starts pretty much right off the bat. ... There are a lot of really hilarious scenes, both visually and in the dialogue. … I enjoyed it." - Jeff "It’s tragic and sad and funny all at the same time." - Doc Director: Thomas Aske Berg, Fredrik Waldeland Cast: Thomas Aske Berg, Brigt Skrettingland, Kim Sønderholm King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen A feature-length documentary on the acclaimed work and eclectic career of maverick filmmaker Larry Cohen (BLACK CAESAR, GOD TOLD ME TO, Q THE WINGED SERPENT, THE STUFF, PHONE BOOTH)   "I think there’s a lot to like here. Even if you just barely know Cohen’s work, King Cohen will pull back that veil and I wouldn’t be surprised if it makes you want to see more of what he’s done." - Rafe "King Cohen is just the most beautiful story about a guy who has had such a positive and sometimes weird effect on a myriad of actors and producers and writers and has nurtured so many people’s careers. … You come out feeling so good after watching this." - Vanessa "Anybody that’s into horror needs to see King Cohen!" - Jeff "Amazing, just the drive and the ambition that Larry Cohen had. He knew what he wanted and just ran out and got it." - Doc Director: Steve Mitchell Cast: J.J. Abrams, Rick Baker, Eric Bogosian
