Last month we hosted the GAIN Coaching by Design Workshop. A recurring theme in the workshop was process. Coaching by design requires process. On this episode of the GAINcast, Vern Gambetta dives into his process which starts with defining what he calls the six abilities: trainability, adaptability, recoverability, durability, availability, and coachability. We've reached our bicent...episodial?!01:58 - ReminiscingToday we're looking back over more than three years of producing the CBP. Here are some our initial thoughts:-Our intro is still rocking a 2019 vibe. -Mom is usually pretty supportive, but… There's an episode out there somewhere from those very first episodes, and we would really love for them to stay buried deep in whatever pile of digital debris. Tyler poses a challenge: If we get to 100 ratings on Apple Podcasts within two months of today's episode, he'll share this embarrassment. -Tyler flashes back to the studio setup for those earliest episodes: Just a couple dudes and a big-screen TV.-Eddie recalls and early episodes with Pete DuMont, Clifton Harness, and more.09:08 - Whitey Tighties, Pete Rose and Cannibalistic HamstersEddie gives a shout-out to his favorite episode title. Our middle brother, Andy, joined us for this episode, which consisted of brotherly recollections. Poor guy passed out quite often. We cringe as we look back at our early rhythms and quirks. Tough stuff. 11:48 - Favorite episodesHere are a few that we look back on most fondly:-Going Analog in a Digital World - (feat. Eric Reinholdt of the 30x40 Design Workshop on Youtube) -Eric Anderson and his leg lamp-Todd Dawalt (who has his own podcast, Construction Leading Edge) and our discussion about the labor shortage as we headed into the pandemic -David Smigel and an early conversation about Starlink on jobsites-Roy Underhill of The Woodwright's Shop-Lego episode-The House that Sears Built-The RFI Blockchain-Matt Byrd of the Reality Capture Network-Donnie Williams and our conversation about supply chains19:15 - Surprise lessonsWe spend some time exploring what we've learned. Eddie shares that he'd thought he had the solutions that the construction industry needs. He has seen his understanding expand and has gained empathy.Tyler discusses leadership and the constraints that make it hard for higher-ups to do things the way that younger, less-experienced people think things ought to be done. We express our appreciation for the sometimes contentious discussions. We've seen growth result from the open exploration of points of disagreement. 28:00 - Echo chambersTyler dumps some thoughts about people pitching themselves as guests in order to discuss the fact that the industry is slow to accept technology. He disagrees. Eddie lists technologies that have been readily adopted because they increase our productivity and make us look more competent. He acknowledges that he'd look like an old man if he'd step back onto a residential-construction jobsite today with tools that didn't exist when he was working in that world. We discuss the program features and the types of content that we've chosen to leave behind.39:43 - Megaphone messageWe share our thoughts for the industry. They're simple:-Eddie: Treat others the way you'd like them to treat you.-Tyler: Say thanks. _______________________ Link zum erwähnten Buch: https://amzn.eu/d/9xNwqG9 _______________________ Business by Design Workshop: https://www.humandesignjourney.de/businessbydesign-workshop _______________________ Webseite: https://www.humandesignjourney.de/ Kostenloser Chartrechner: https://www.humandesignjourney.de/chartrechner Instagram: [@humandesign_journey](https://www.instagram.com/humandesign_journey/)

For today's guest, Meg Plumb, Philmont has always been and continues to be a family affair. From trekking with her immediate family and recruiting her cousins to be on staff - to today, visiting the area often as her family now has ties to Ute Park, NM.Her first summer on staff, Meg was a tour guide at the Villa Philmonte. A job that for Meg was a constant reminder of the generosity of the gift that the Phillips Family gave to us all. Also, an incredible first year job, to be able to engage with participants, PTC staff, and the general public. Meg went on to personify a fictional Irish immigrant at French Henry, spend two consecutive summers at Fish Camp, and many more backcountry and second season experiences. Meg and I share our ghostly visitation encounters at Fish Camp, both of which ominously occurred on the celebration of Helen Jane's birthday. Meg discusses the ritual of celebrating birthdays at Philmont and attending surrounding community events like the Red River Wine and Arts Festival. Today Meg is a Landscape Architect, and Director of Legacy Design at Design Workshop - out of the Aspen, CO office. From her professional socio-ecological perspective, we chat about what makes the landscape of Philmont so special to its people. Meg closes the interview sharing memories of her cousin Coralie Graham, and how Meg continues to surround herself with Philmont and Northern NM culture in her daily life. Sandy Dann speaks with YMAC Deputy Co - Chairperson Doris Eaton On Cultural Heritage Protection Co - Design Workshop In response to the widespread opposition from Aboriginal communities to the McGowan Government's rushed Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2021 (WA) (ACH Act), the WA Alliance of Native Title Representative Bodies and Service Providers (the Alliance) is hosting the ‘Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Protection Co-Design Workshop'. The gathering will focus on the implementation of the ACH Act; it's associated guidelines, regulations and on-going review, and explore a credible, best practice co-design approach. For genuine co-design to be achieved, the workshop is an important first step in engaging with relevant stakeholders – including government and industry representatives, heritage professionals, and co-design experts – in an Aboriginal-led conversation about what ‘co-design' truly is. Dr Christopher Kueh, an expert in co-design from Edith Cowan University, has been invited to share his knowledge of the potential for co-design to revolutionise how to protect and manage Aboriginal cultural heritage. “Co-design is about designing with, not for,” said Dr Kueh. “It's a collaborative effort that engages communities to identify and unpack the complex challenges they face. By focusing on story-telling and iterative transformation, we can create a sustainable approach to design, that is open to continual feedback and improvement.” Day One of the workshop will be an opportunity for Aboriginal people to come together to discuss their priorities and goals for the co-design process. Participants will then share their expectations on the drafting of the regulations and how co-design should work in practice. Day Two will welcome industry, investors and government representatives to build on the conversation to collectively improve Aboriginal cultural heritage protection. WA Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Hon. Dr Tony Buti MLA, will also join the workshop on Day Two to hear from delegates and update attendees on the current status of the ACH Act and its implementation. The Alliance event partners hosting the workshop include Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation, South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council, Native Title Services Goldfields, and the National Native Title Council.
It is our second podcast-iversary! Thank you SO much for listening. To show my appreciation, I'm sharing part of my Career Design Workshop with you-free-on this episode! It is our second anniversary on the podcast, and I want to say thank you so much for listening and for helping us reach 207,832 episode downloads! That is amazing, and I am truly grateful. As a thank you, I want to share part of my Career Design Workshop with you. Normally, you need to attend one of the retreats included with our Elevate or Amplify coaching programs, which are a significant investment. But since we are celebrating, I want you to have this sneak peek! I hope you enjoy and find it helpful. For the full show notes, visit https://cathymazak.com/episode93 How a Designed Career Feels I'm going to illustrate how a designed career feels vs. an undesigned career using bookshelves. This first picture is of my living room bookshelves at home. These shelves started out organized, clean and set up how I want them. But as you can see, over time they have been stuffed full of many things that don't really belong there, or aren't even mine at all. My husband and children have put their things on there, a bunch of random things no one knew what to do with have been shoved in, and the more stuffed it gets, the more overwhelming it feels to deal with all of it. So it just keeps coming! If these bookshelves were a career, it is definitely undesigned. This next picture is of my dream bookshelf. It's curated, calm, everything has a place and feels like it belongs. If this bookshelf were a career, it would be an intentionally designed one! I hope you can see where I'm going with this illustration. Career design gives you room to breathe, and helps you curate the career that feels right to you, full of the activities that you have chosen. What Gets in the Way Just like with my personal bookshelves, we might start from an organized place, but life in academia throws so much at us, that if we're not extremely careful and intentional, we end up with something chaotic that feels overwhelming. Here are some things that get in the way: The snowball effect. The more things that come at us, the more fires we have to put out, the less time we have to reflect on what we're doing, the fuller the “bookshelf” gets. Our default setting is react. If there's not a solid plan in place, when new things get thrown at us, they often just get shoved in wherever they fit. Instead of responding with intention, we react, and therefore never feel like we have enough time, space, or control. We believe we have no control. There is a long list of things in academia that we can't control, so we give in to the feeling that our whole career is out of our hands. What is Career Design? Career design is all about intentional planning and intentional action. The key is that your career choices and plans are driven by you, not others. You decide what you want your career to look like and what direction you need to go, and you make choices about how to get there. The goal is to create a career that is joyful, and then to set boundaries to protect that joy. “You should get joy out of your career.” -Cathy Mazak Is my career designed well enough? To get an idea of where you are in terms of a well-designed career, take a minute to complete this assessment. After each question, give yourself a grade of: RED: Not designed at all; things just come at me and I react YELLOW: Somewhat designed; I'm able to make some intentional choices, some of the time GREEN: Well Designed; this area is driven by me, intentional and well-defined 1. Is your calendar designed? Is your schedule intentionally created and controlled by you? 2. Is your email management designed? Do you have a system for dealing with email or are you just reacting? Are there boundaries in place around your email? 3. Is your writing system designed? Do you have a regular process, systems, and a way to engage with your projects in an intentional way? Do you know how to get back into it when you fall away? 4. Is your pipeline designed? Do you have a curated pipeline full of strategically chosen projects for specifically targeted journals? 5. Is your path to promotion designed? Whatever point you're at in your career, are your next steps defined? While the process and requirements may feel arbitrary or out of your hands, have you decided how you will approach the goal, and what steps you'll choose to take? What color came up most for you on this assessment? How did you feel about it? Checking in on what's working and what isn't is a vital first step toward designing a career that feels good to you. Once you get a handle on what's tripping you up, you'll have a better idea of what needs to change and where to start. The Career Design Process Set Intentions--Take Action--Reflect & Revise Having a well designed career is not something you can do and have it stay done forever. As with my bookshelf example above, you have to revisit it if you want it to stay the way you want it. You have to set clear intentions, take action on them, reflect on what's working, and revise as necessary. You also need to be relentless with your boundaries. Ready for More? Did you enjoy this sneak peek into our Career Design process? If you're ready to find space to think and plan your next career moves, our Elevate program could be right for you. Today I talked to Eric Reinholdt about two excellent books: Architect + Entrepreneur Volume 1: A Field Guide (Design Workshop Press, 2015) and Architect + Entrepreneur Volume 2: A How-To Guide (Design Workshop Press, 2015). Architect + Entrepreneur: A Field Guide is filled with contemporary, relevant, fresh tips and advice, from a seasoned professional architect building a new business. The guide advocates novel strategies and tools that merge entrepreneurship with the practice of architecture and interior design. The Problem: Embarking on a new business venture is intimidating; you have questions. But many of the resources available to help entrepreneur architects and interior designers start their design business lack timeliness and relevance. Most are geared toward building colossal firms like SOM and Gensler using outdated methods and old business models. If you’re an individual or small team contemplating starting a design business, this is your field guide; crafted to inspire action. The Solution: Using the lean startup methodology to create a minimum viable product, the handbook encourages successive small wins that support a broader vision enabling one to “think big, start small, and learn fast.” It’s a unique take on design practice viewed through the lens of entrepreneurship and is designed to answer the questions all new business owners face, from the rote to the existential. Architect + Entrepreneur: A How-To Guide challenges the foundations of traditional practice and asks: + In what ways can we hack our craft to serve both our personal lifestyle and our professional goals? + What if design practice capitalized on the architect’s drive to be creative and consumer buying culture in equal measure? + How can we turn our services into products? + How can young professionals compete in today’s marketplace leveraging the power of the Internet? Reinholdt, founder of 30X40 Design Workshop describes in detail how his business model has evolved to leverage passive income producing products and offers a new paradigm for practice. It’s a manual of high-level strategies, field-tested tactics, and case studies showing how architects are reinventing practice in the 21st century. Here's the thing about owning a flower business – you have to juggle your time between being the head of HR, the creative director, the person in charge of production... Yes, it's normal to feel pulled in five different directions because you are doing the job of five individuals. In this week's podcast, I thought it helpful to share the staffing model of an advertising agency. Did someone mention Don Draper? Yep, there is much to learn from how we used to staff advertising agency teams and a lot we can apply to our own flower businesses. Today, I talk you through the ins and outs of the advertising agency model and teach what this means for you and your business. Whether you're a one woman show or looking to grow your team, today's episode will help ensure you're considering ALL the roles you need to consider to build a sustainable flower business. Talking about the 'gram on today's episode of the Thrive Podcast. You know how on Instagram (if you have a business profile), you can only list ONE live link? Well, today I'm sharing a few tips and tricks on how to use that single, one and only live link to your advantage. Make the most of this link and increase the number of enquiries you receive directly from Instagram. Yep. This week's episode is super specific. But I know it's going to be super duper helpful – and give you lots of ideas on how to move customers from your insta profile, through to your website and ultimately to enquiring with you. Shamira Preston says she's a "southern organize-a-holic with a big heart from The Woodlands! Although I was raised in the suburbs, my heart swoons for country living and a good trail ride. I love wearing jeans and boots with my hair tossed in a messy bun but I am no stranger to high heels and being dolled up! I love love pretty things and you can find me shopping the malls and local boutiques or spending time with my family when I’m not planning an event. I have my Bachelors Degree from Norfolk State University in Interdisciplinary Studies, concentrating on business and graphic design. I always knew I would end up owning my own business, but I believe my time in the Navy allowed me to truly master the skills I need to succeed as the owner of an event planning firm. Growing up I watched my aunt plan and design events for brides and couldn't wait to get my feet wet. After shadowing her for several years and working with the event planning committee in the Navy, I felt it was time to spread my wings, in 2014 Magnolia Rose Company was founded. With over 8 years in the industry, planning events still bring me an indescribable joy, for example when I see my couples faces as they prepare to take their first kiss or the overwhelming emotion of the groom as he sees his beautiful bride walk down the aisle. With my passion to flawlessly execute polished events that exude quality and encompass your love story, I believe in continuing my education and dedicating time to learn new styles and trends my couples will love."Shamira is also the Founder and driving force behind Elevate! RAFFORZIAMOLA!

This talk examines the benefits of speeding up high-frequency trading on financial exchanges. The authors found that increasing the speed of exchange does not necessarily improve liquidity. It did cause traders to increase the spread at which they were willing to trade, which in turn makes it more expensive to trade stocks, and allows firms to collect higher rents.

John Hatfield examines how market mechanisms affect the level of investment before participants formally enter the market. They offered the example of ex ante investment in human capital induced by later entrance into the labor market. The researchers then looked at how these levels of investment may be optimized. Their results show that investment is optimized when the mechanism is ex post efficient and strategy proof.

Michael Pavlin proposes a methodology for using inverse optimization to reconstruct the pricing mechanism and distribution of market power using location prices in commodity markets. Pavlin applies his method to the Midcontinent Independent Service Operator (MISO) electricity market.

Mao Ye observes that tick price regulation causes different relative tick sizes at differently priced stocks. He suggests that there may be a causal relationship between high-speed competition at large relative tick size. Thus high frequency traders have an advantage when the relative tick sizes are large.

Sam Hwang attempts to use moment inequalities to determine if Seoul's school choice mechanism for children entering high school might be altered to yield greater levels of total welfare. Seoul's mechanism is partially revealed and non-strategyproof, so Hwang derives a series of moment inequalities, but the resulting estimates were not narrow enough to determine the direction of the change in welfare in his simulation.

Fuhito Kojima proposes a new double auction mechanism to address incompatible incentives that sometimes lead to inefficient outcomes. Their mechanism - the "groupwise price mechanism" - satisfies both approximate efficiency and incentive compatibility.
