Part One of The Joy Boys' Story takes us from November of 1960 through to mid-1961. This was an incredibly fertile period for the group, as a standalone group, backing Col Joye and backing other artists on studio recordings. This episode will focus on The Joy Boys releases as a standalone group. As well as the 45 hit singles, we'll dig out some great LP and EP tracks that never appeared on a 45 single. That theme of “Everything Old is New Again” certainly permeates through the episode. There's even an opportunity to singalong with an instrumental version of a big hit for Col Joye and The Joy Boys! And even if instrumentals are not your ‘thing', there's plenty of fascinating back stories. Enjoy!

What's Old is New Again... Luke and Larry started shooting muzzleloaders back in the past century, fueled somewhat by the "Jeremiah Johnson" movie. Larry started with kits for .50 Hawkens from both CVA and Thompson/Center. Luke followed suit a short time later. From there Larry started hunting with Tony Knight when he first released the revolutionary MK-85 and progressed from there. Around this campfire Luke and Larry talk about the changes they've seen from shooting patched balls and conical in slow-twist barrels to faster twist barrel shooting sabots, as well as going from blackpowder to modern day blackpowder substitutes and along the way tell an interesting anecdote or two.

The charges against him include two counts of child molestation, one count of sexual battery against a child under 16, and one count of violation of oath of office. Ventura, who joined the police department in October 2020 and graduated from the Police Academy in spring 2021, had been serving at the North Precinct. The investigation began when one of his supervisors noticed inconsistencies in his patrol activities, and the Special Victims Unit got involved due to the age of the girl involved, who is under 16. Ventura is held without bond in the Gwinnett County Jail.……………. read more on this at gwinnettdailypost.com     STORY 2: arrest   Two men, Lamonte Dianell Smith and Christian Lebron Williams, have been arrested for allegedly entering schools in Jackson and Barrow counties in Georgia and triggering a lockdown at Winder-Barrow High School. The third person involved, Jaywan T. Edwards, remains at large. The arrests were made after information on social media showed one of the suspects with a firearm. Williams and Smith face charges in both Barrow and Jackson counties, including disruption of public schools and loitering on school property. The trio entered Winder-Barrow High School, leading to a lockdown of the school and nearby Russell Middle School and Winder Elementary School. The reason for their presence at the school is still unknown.   Story 3: murder Two Norcross teenagers, ages 15 and 16, have been arrested and will be tried as adults for the murder of 18-year-old Andres David Buitrago Castillo. Salvador Ruiz-Gonzalez, 16, and Andy Antonio-Herrera, 15, were charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies, and in Ruiz-Gonzalez's case, armed robbery. The incident occurred on July 23 in the parking lot at The Elliott Apartments complex in unincorporated Norcross. Both teens are currently held at a Regional Youth Detention Center. We'll be right back   Break 2:   M.O.G.- Tom Wages -  Obits   Story 4: voice   The show "Everything Old is New Again" at the Lawrenceville Arts Center features re-imagined show-tunes presented by Jason Wynn, director of Voices of Note. The performance includes songs from various Broadway hits, creatively reinterpreted with unexpected twists. The revue incorporates diverse styles, appealing to different generations and theatre enthusiasts. Wynn drew inspiration from a Sondheim-centric show he directed previously, aiming to deliver unexpected and distinctive performances. The show promises to be unlike any traditional Broadway revue, with unique arrangements and a wide variety of songs. The Lawrenceville Arts Center provides an ideal venue for the production, and the show is not recommended for children due to its content.   Story 5: cyber   Gwinnett Technical College's Cybersecurity program is accredited by the Department of Homeland Defense and the National Security Agency, making it one of the sought-after institutions for cybersecurity training. The program boasts a placement rate of 95%, with students in high demand by security companies. It offers both online and in-person courses, attracting around 800 students during the fall and spring semesters. The program's new facility with two cybersecurity labs allows for in-house competitions to enhance students' skills and knowledge. Future goals include retaining accreditation and increasing community outreach to promote online safety and security.   Story 6:  art   Gwinnett County art galleries are offering a diverse range of visual beauty for residents to enjoy during the current heat wave. At Tannery Row in Buford, an exhibition titled "Of Matter and Energy" combines art and physics, showcasing the work of nine artists. In Suwanee, the Annual Member's Show will feature approximately 100 pieces of art from various artists, including emerging talents from grade and high schools. The Suwanee Art Center's Executive Director is impressed with the international diversity of the artistic community in the Atlanta metro area. In Norcross, the "Summer Brights" exhibit will display colorful paintings depicting the summer season by five selected artists.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3:  ESOG – Ingles 3 - Lawrenceville   Story 7: Buford Commits   Buford Football players K.J. Bolden and Dale Greene have made their commitments. Bolden, a top recruit, committed to the Florida State University football program. He is a five-star recruit, ranked as the No. 1 safety nationally and the No. 2 prospect in Georgia. Greene, a senior, committed to the Western Carolina University football program. He is a 6-foot-4, 285-pound offensive lineman with a 4.0 GPA, and he also competes in track and field and wrestling for Buford. Both are part of a Buford roster that enters the 2023 season atop the state 7A rankings and the Wolves are ranked 10th nationally in the MaxPreps poll to start the season.   Story 8:  Green   The Duluth Wildcats softball community celebrated the opening of their season and the re-retirement of Michelle Green's No. 8 jersey. Green, a Wildcat legend, led the team to a state title in 1999 before becoming a star pitcher at the University of Georgia. Her jersey was initially retired but was re-retired when a rising ninth-grader wanted to wear No. 8. Duluth's current head coach, Megan Robison, and former coach, Dawn Marsh, honored Green by re-retiring her jersey. The team also unveiled enhancements to their softball stadium, showing their commitment to their past and future success.   Story 9: Schaub   The Atlanta Falcons have hired former quarterback Matt Schaub as a "football analyst." Schaub, who spent most of his career with the Falcons, will be involved with the team during training camp and the preseason. He will bring his 17 years of playing experience to mentor second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder. Schaub's role could eventually evolve into a coaching position under offensive coordinator Dave Ragone. This reunion is seen as a positive move for both Schaub and the Falcons, as he can stay connected to the sport and possibly kickstart a coaching career, while the team gains valuable insights from a recent player.   We'll have final thoughts after this   Break 4:   Henssler 60 Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. This week, Alan, Quinta, and Scott were joined by UVA Law Professor Paul Stephan to talk through the close-calls in this week's national security news, including:“Xi's All That.” Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Beijing this past week, for a long delayed sit-down with President Xi Jinping to try and de-escalate the two superpowers' tense relationship. Was this meeting a smart move or a giveaway? And what should we make of President Biden calling the Chinese leader a “dictator” shortly after Blinken's return?“Adverse REPOssession.” The question of what to do with the $300 billion in Russia-related assets frozen by the United States and its allies has reemerged, with members of Congress recently introducing a new version of the REPO Act that would seize those assets and make them available as reparations for Ukraine, among other purposes. Is seizure the right way to handle these assets? What challenges and risks might such a dramatic step encounter?“Robo Joe.” President Biden joined a summit of leaders in the AI industry this week as part of his administration's ongoing effort to seriously engage the policy challenges raised by AI technology. But what are the realistic prospects for regulation? And what form should it take? For object lessons, Alan recommended the new Apple comedy “Platonic.” Quinta doubled-down on the TV recommendations with the stage play-turned-movie about leaks in the intelligence community, “Reality.” Scott urged listeners to check out Gil Scott-Heron's classic 2010 final album “I'm New Here,” and two phenomenal reimaginings: “We're New Here” by Jamiexx and “We're New Again” by Makaya McCraven. And Paul recommended the new book “The Lock-Up: A Novel” by John Banville. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

ESG, AI and innovation are three major trends that will shape 2023 for communications professionals, says David Fuscus, CEO of Xenophon Strategies. In this episode, David discusses the importance of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) programs, which are becoming an increased focus for corporations across the globe. He emphasizes the need for corporations to be transparent and honest about their environmental and social responsibility in order to maintain credibility with the public. The United States is lagging behind in this area, but big changes are coming in terms of regulation and requirements. It is important for companies to not just focus on the environmental part of ESG, but also the social and governance parts as well. Abbie points out that ESG is not just about creating a spreadsheet, but about taking a stand on particular issues and being vocal about it. David advises businesses to take advantage of opportunities to improve their ESG rating in order to attract more investors.Artificial Intelligence (AI) has generated many headlines in recent weeks, and the public is starting to realize the ways that AI generated content can be used in everyday life. PR firms need to produce a variety of content, and AI can help with that. However, skilled PR professionals are still needed to create compelling stories that capture people's attention. In today's communications landscape, it is important for PR agencies to be able to produce a many different types of content in order to run successful campaigns. One way to accomplish this is by driving down the cost of content production -- which can actually increase the importance of the strategy and thinking behind the PR campaigns.Additional Resources"PR Predictions 2023: Tougher Markets, More Strategic Roles and New Opportunities Await Communicators"Listen to David's previous appearance on PRGN Presents"What is Old is New Again" by David Fuscus"5 Trends Influencing the State of Public Relations" by Aaron BlankAbout the Guest David Fuscus is the 2022-23 President of the Public Relations Global Network and CEO of PRGN's Washington, DC member agency, Xenophon Strategies. There is this wonderful song written by Peter Allen in the 1970 s.  Everything old is New Again. In a way that song sums up where marketers are these days. When that song was written fifty years ago, television advertising ruled. Businesses used the platform to build awareness by reaching a wide audience with little concern about demographics. It didn't matter who saw your message as long as you got in front of as many people as possible. The assumption was sooner or later someone would buy. Then along came digital media and especially social media marketing and suddenly marketers could target messages more precisely based on interests and demographics. Social media became a valuable tool to move prospects through the buyer's journey. Unfortunately with changes in social media algorithms and more restrictions to protect user privacy we seem to be back in time.  We are forced to put lots of broad messages out there in  the hopes of driving someone to our website and email list. Everything old is new again.  If you are looking to keep up with the changes and and find resources to stay in the game, check out  The Digital Toolbox

Finally, we explored the controversy surrounding the mighty pineapple. Duende LinksCheck out Duende’s Music on BandcampFollow Duende on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube Fans With Bands LinksSubscribe to Fans With Bands on your favorite podcast service such as Apple, Google, Youtube, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Audible, Amazon Music or Stitcher.  Be sure to rate the show and please send us feedback. She couldn’t pinpoint when, where, or how she became a fan, but it was an undeniable force. The Duende trance created by the music ignited Renee’s interest. Yet it was the band and how they love and appreciate their fans that transformed Renee into a lifelong fan. The immediate draw for Lauren was Scott (Duende bassist and her husband). With a laugh, she added that she was glad the rest of the band kept her on. Laura (Duende drummer) mentioned that they always have fun together on the road.Sarah is in the band catl with her husband Jamie who hail from Toronto, Detroit is the perfect launching point for tours across North America. In 2006, Sarah met Duende when they played a show together at the Painted Lady Lounge in Hamtramck. Sarah loved the energy of the music. In particular, Sarah being a drummer herself admires the powerful playing of Laura. They have remained friends ever since. Also hailing from Canada are Jeanette and Dany who make up the band Dany Laj and The Looks. They met Duende via a show they played with them at PJ’s Lager House in Detroit. This was roughly six months after Sarah had met Duende. It was Dany and Jeanette’s first time in Detroit. Jeff H (guitars/vocals) and Laura invited Dany and Jeanette to stay at their home. Between the love of Duende’s music and their hospitality, they became great friends.Jeanette and Dany enjoyed Jeff and Laura’s company so much, they have dropped in after shows in Detroit. They even turned down a vacation in Florida during the winter to stay with Jeff and Laura. Clearly the beautiful souls in Duende are strong attractors.Even More Duende DiscoveryThe first time Ryan saw Duende he remembers with nostalgia, was at Club Bart in Ferndale (which closed in 2011). It was a “DuendesDay” and it made a lasting impression. Ryan explained that like other pivotal artists he enjoys, hearing Duende was a shock to the system. As Ryan explains the music is sonically dense requiring many listens and teaches you to appreciate it along the way.Kate’s first exposure to Duende was at the Cadieux Cafe when her Trio (Kate Hinote Trio)  performed with them on a show. She remembers one last impression was that the music was loud (in a good way). Later Duende asked Kate if she would perform on one of their songs. After many shows and dance parties, Kate is still in love with the band.Matthew is a newbie to Duende having first seen them just before the pandemic. Matthew was playing keyboards for the Algebra Mothers who were on the same bill with Duende. Matthew talked with Jeff H between sets and found that Jeff had listened to another band that Matthew has been part of for many years. The musical connection and synchronicity made for a new friendship along this strange and winding road of life.Whipping Out the Cool CardWhipping out the cool card was Jeff M who saw Duende at their second show ever in 2006 at Jacoby’s. Jeff met Duende at about the same time he was beginning his work as a music writer. He has many Ideas Adrift shall we say. He felt like their paths were entwined from the start. Over the course of time, they have developed into great friends and mutual fans.Ryan turned Ben on to Duende. A couple of years ago, Ben along with Ryan in his band Ryan Dillaha and The Miracle Men played with Duende at a show in Toronto. The experience was fun and solidified Ben’s appreciation for the band. In fact, he’s been listening to Duende so much that their music is starting to influence his own songwriting. The power of Duende, ole! Finally Steve was introduced to Duende through Scott and his wife Lauren. He thinks Duende is highly underrated. He loves their cool laid back sounds. On top of that, Steve said the band has a great name. We agree. Ole!That one time at a Duende ShowJeff M commented about how much fun it is to be at a Duende show. Obviously, we are all fans of the band and while their music is great, Jeff hit on a key aspect. Their live shows are supernatural.Dany recalls the story of Duende playing with catl at the Dakota Tavern on New Year’s eve. Apparently there is a video of a guy in a monkey suit who gets on stage with Jeff H. The monkey was in fact the DJ at this Duende rock fest. The monkey was also Dr. Swankenstein’s alter-ego named Coco-Bongo. He played piano with Duende while sporting a fez. We all immediately thought that Joel (Duende guitarist) should have a fez. Actually, Joel was surprised he does not own a fez. If you are looking for a gift for Joel, there you go.The Duende NeighborhoodAnother insight from Jeff M is that as fans go to shows, they are pulled into the Duende neighborhood. The music, the performance, and the warm embracing nature of the band gives you a sense of community. Add in a fan base that welcomes everyone with open arms and it becomes easy to settle into the neighborhood. The OptiganAs we talked about the community around Duende, Dany shared a story of the Optigan. He and Jeanette were staying over at Jeff H and Laura’s. Dany mentioned over morning coffee that in all the times they have stayed over, he had never seen the band’s practice space at Jeff and Laura’s house. Loaded up with coffee they descend into the Duende magical music factory. Here Dany saw the Optigan. Jeff explained that it is an organ that uses optical discs to play sounds. Basically a precursor to samplers. Jeff’s friend Matt V had bought it years ago and left it. They had been trying over the years to get it back to him in New York.Dany thought that it probably would fit in their van. After some quick van Tetris, the Optigan was loaded up. Dany arranged with Matt V to pick up the Optigan. After hanging out post show, Matt mentioned that he wanted to record with Dany and Jeanette. The end result is their album Everything New is New Again.Because of the Duende community and a visit to their magic music factory, Dany Laj and the Looks recorded a great album. Sadly, the Optigan did not make it on to the recording. We can only wonder as to what cosmic tones the Optigan is singing today.Duende and the Detroit MythRenee brought up a great point about the community of Duende includes many of the great Detroit bands that they jam with. Bands like The Muggs, The Beggars, and Ryan Dillaha and the Miracle Men. I wondered what the members of Duende think about the myth of Detroit music. It seems that most stories of Detroit music focus on the past and not necessarily the present.Joel replied that it is difficult to really gage the scene of current Detroit music as there is so much going on all the time. When we could play shows, there were a ton of options. It is difficult to see the present, yet easy to view the past.Jeff H added that the myths of Detroit grow over time. What may have seemed like a golden age where in reality brief bursts of musical glory. The MC5 or The Stooges were brief, yet impactful aspects of Detroit music mythology. That mythology leads to a radiation that lends a bit of cred to the bands who continue to originate from the city.Dany hit upon a great notion that the myth of Detroit music is really a soul of the city that oozes rock and roll. That impacts the music that is made here and draws touring bands here to feel that vibe. Sarah agreed that they sought out Detroit to connect with Jim Diamond. Adding that there are only a few cities like Detroit, and Memphis which generate that blue collar gritty rock feeling.Bands With CatsSarah asked about Sonny the Cat. Evidently everyone on the call has cats. The cats were out and part of the show. Sarah shared a story where after a show at PJ’s, all the bands sat around and talked about their cats. The more we talked, the more we found that nearly all the fans also have cats. A new spin off series called Bands With Cats is in the works.Duende and PineappleYou’ll have to tap into the last bit of the show to learn about the origins of Duende’s band name. It is a compelling story. A story that is mesmerizing, if you will.To wrap things up, we dove into controversy: Pineapple or no pineapple on pizza? In this episode, nearly everyone was into pineapple on pizza, with the exception of myself and Joel. We are firmly on the savory side. Go ahead and grab a slice of pizza. Then go back and listen to this great episode featuring Duende and their fans. Ole!

Our guest today knows a thing or two about that, and she’s now sharing her story in the bestselling book “New Again” in hopes of helping others find new perspective on life, and the inevitable challenges that come with it.   At the peak of the recession, Andy Ptacek co-founded a marketing company. 10 years and a thriving business later, Andy was diagnosed with brain cancer--what her first doctor called “IN-OPERABLE” brain cancer--at just 32 years old with 2 little boys at home.   Understandably, It rocked everything. First, in a scary way. Then, in a grateful way. The journey was agonizing at times, but perspective taught her that she wasn’t damaged. The experience actually grew her self-awareness, her ability to love, her patience, her worldview, and her faith.   The “old Andy” had grown into something new –something better– and she believes we all are capable of this, even without a massively traumatic experience to shake us awake.   In this episode we talk about: Choosing to pivot and why Andy started a business in the middle of a recession What Andy’s battle with brain cancer taught her about priorities and gratitude Learning to be “new again” after a traumatic experience Connect with Andy! instagram.com/andythenewgirl www.andythenewgirl.com Let’s connect! instagram.com/powerhouse_women instagram.com/llindseyschwartz facebook.com/groups/powerhousewomencommunity

We had the opportunity to interview Taking Back Sunday! "If you can't believe that Taking Back Sunday have been around for 20 years, you're not alone, because they can't either. Although the pride of Long Island have had a handful of member changes over the years, the current lineup of the band – vocalist Adam Lazzara, guitarist John Nolan, drummer Mark O'Connell and bassist Shaun Cooper – have all been there since the beginning. From the band's landmark 2002 debut Tell All Your Friends to their most recent full-length, 2016's Tidal Wave, Taking Back Sunday have evolved from a key player in the early 2000s emo scene to a genre-defying rock band who have three gold albums without ever ceasing to push the limitations of their sound. This fact is evidenced on Twenty, a 21-song collection set for release on January 11, 2019 via Craft Recordings that spans all seven of their full-lengths and solidifies them as an act with a catalog that will undoubtedly outlive them. By now you know the basic history of the band, so we thought it'd be apt to look back at the fact that almost none of it happened... “When I joined Taking Back Sunday in 1999, it was the first real band that I had ever been a part of, but it never crossed my mind that I would be doing this twenty years later. When I came in to audition it was just [original vocalist] Antonio [Longo] and [founding TBS guitarist and former Movielife member] Eddie Reyes. Eddie had started enough bands that he was like, 'I know how to do this, I can just call one guy.' But it was a crazy thing. When it started out, there was a lot more likelihood that it would fizzle out in a few months than it would last a few years. I tried out, and basically after we jammed for a couple of hours Eddie was like, 'All right, you're in. You have to get some different equipment though... and I'll sell it to you.' I think he sold me a head and cabinet for $200 [that] had to be worth at least $600.” -John Nolan “My entry into the band is pretty interesting. One day my brother said, 'Hey, my friend is looking for a drummer and he wanted to know if you wanted to try out.' But once I realized he was talking about Eddie, I had second thoughts. I remembered Eddie was the jerk who would yell at me and Shaun and all of our friends in front of Shaun's house when we would hang out there because he would be going to Movielife practice. So I said, 'No, I don't want to play in a band with that guy.' Then maybe two months later Shaun and I were hanging out [with] my mutual friend at a restaurant where Antonio worked and our friend said, 'Yo, my boy needs a drummer for his band if you want to try out.' The first song I heard was 'Go On' and I was like, 'Wow, this definitely has a lot of potential,' so I agreed. On my first tryout I remember walking in and seeing John, Antonio and then guess who's there? Eddie Reyes. I was like, 'Oh, what's up, man? How are you doing?' That was it.” -Mark O'Connell “I didn't know anyone in Taking Back Sunday initially; I just knew who Eddie was because some of the bands from Long Island would play in North Carolina. I had just moved back to Greensboro from Wilmington and I didn't really have anything going on aside from delivering Chinese food, so I really wanted to be playing music. I ended up in a booth with Eddie and Antonio at the after show hangout spot, Waffle House, after an ill-fated Sons Of Abraham show and heard they needed a bass player for their new project. They said, 'Yeah, you should come up.' A couple of weeks later me and my friend Chris drove his 1988 Honda Accord up to New York, I tried out and then drove back. A few weeks later I got a call from Eddie [who] said, 'If you want to do this, we have some shows coming up.' So I flew to Long Island and never came back. Looking back now it's funny because I was like, 'I'm moving to New York, it's going to be so sick.' Then I moved to Long Island and it was kind of a bummer. It was just like North Carolina... only way more crowded.” -Adam Lazzara “Mark and I have played in bands together as long as we’ve known each other, which is over 30 years. When he joined Taking Back Sunday, I begged him to get me a bass audition. At first Mark told me that since I was so unreliable in our previous bands that he couldn’t vouch for me, so I got serious, enrolled in night classes at a local college and tried to get my act together. About a month later, Mark noticed a change but sadly some kid from North Carolina was ditching everything he knew to move to New York to play bass in the band. Adam was a good bass player but he had a manic, magnetic energy on stage that everyone in the crowd was captivated by. Suddenly Antonio was out and Eddie made Adam put down the bass and grab a microphone. Mark got me a tryout for the band December 26, 2000. I played along to the demo day and night, made myself fall in love with those songs and played my first show at our friend's house a few days later on New Year’s Eve.” -Shaun Cooper The rest is history. Taking Back Sunday may have started out like most of their peers by playing local shows and recording demos; however, unlike most of those peers they went on to sign to a major label, tour alongside Linkin Park and become international superstars. That said, they still speak of the band's early days as if they just happened yesterday. “I'll never forget, we played Ground Zero in Long Island in 2001 and it was the first show we played where people were singing along and going crazy. It was a tiny place that held 100 people but you could sense something had changed,” Lazzara recalls. “After the show I remember we carried some equipment back to John's car and we were sitting in it just not saying anything. We were just thinking, 'that was the best thing ever.' I was starry-eyed and staring into space; I couldn't believe that just happened.” Nolan concurs, adding, “Even after the band got a lot bigger and did things that were a lot more impressive, that moment was really huge because you could tell something was happening. Everyone was going nuts and that really stands out to me as being one of the defining moments of Taking Back Sunday.” Twenty is a celebration not only of those career-defining moments but of the landmark albums that chronicle the band's story: 2002's Tell All Your Friends, 2004's Where You Want To Be, 2006's Louder Now, 2009's New Again, 2011's Taking Back Sunday, 2014's Happiness Is and 2016's Tidal Wave, all of which are represented on this collection. Whether your introduction to the band was singing along to “A Decade Under The Influence” in a sweaty club or hearing “MakeDamnSure” or “Sink Into Me” on the radio, Twenty is a look back at some of the highlights from this unlikely group of musical misfits. Additionally, fans will be able to hear two newly recorded songs, “All Ready To Go” and “A Song For Dan,” which hint at the direction that Taking Back Sunday are heading in the coming years. Musical legacy aside, ultimately what's most impressive is the fact that after two decades and countless successes, Taking Back Sunday have managed to preserve that initial spark that excited them as teenagers. That fact alone is one worth celebrating, so turn it up and listen loud." For more info, visit TakingBackSunday.com We want to hear from you! In episode 49, we explore some of the issues brought to light by the recent devastating fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and the immediate philanthropic response. Including:   -Does the Notre Dame response demonstrate there is untapped philanthropic potential out there? -Why will people respond so readily to a damaged building, but ongoing efforts to address issues of human poverty and suffering remain hard to fundraise for? -Does this story illustrate that philanthropy is inherently irrational? If so, what should our conclusion be? -What is it about the Notre Dame disaster that has brought about such an unprecedented response? -Should we be grateful to the mega-donors who have pledged millions to Notre Dame, or ask what they are getting in return in terms of social status and legitimacy? -Do we need to scrutinise the source of wealth of these mega-donors, and whether they have paid their fair share of tax, and balance this against their desire to do good through giving? -If we agree that rebuilding Notre Dame constitutes a public good, should the French government pay for it through taxation and public spending? -Is it right for mega-donors to get tax breaks on their gifts to Notre Dame? Should they even get bigger tax breaks, as some have suggested? -What lessons can we take from this story for the wider debates about philanthropy?     Related Content -My mammoth Twitter thread on Notre Dame (and a nice one-page version) -The "Criticisms of Philanthropy" chapter from my book Public Good by Private Means -Another extract from my book, about Arts & Culture philanthropy -"Everything Old is New Again", Alliance Magazine -TAXING QUESTIONS: WHAT DO RUTGER BREGMAN'S DAVOS CRITICISMS MEAN FOR PHILANTHROPY?, CAF Giving Thought Blog -Meet The Philanthropists: A good pint - the brewing industry’s race to give -Previous Giving Thought podcast on "Is Philanthropy Rational?" -Neil Evans 1982 paper "Urbanisation, Elite Attitudes & Philanthropy in Cardiff 1850-1914"

Old songs, particularly the good ones, have a way of hanging around. Catchy "hooks" become the basis for a whole new song, as you'll hear in several of these tracks. Then again, the original versions of other were so popular, or so tapped into the zeitgeist, they've become ingrained in every generation to come after them. And then there are the classics, the songs we've been singing for decades, so they remain a part of the current consciousness, but unless given a "freshening," would be unpalatable on a club floor. It's the cycle of things; songs come, songs go, and some songs come back for a second, third, fourth, and more, round. In this go round, you'll find songs from George Michael; LIPPS, Inc.; Chic; Mike Oldfield (a name you may never have expected to hear in conjunction with a dance set); Faithless, Darude, Georgio Moroder, Stars on 45 (Yes! Stars on 45, can you believe it?); the Michael Zager Band; Everything But the Girl; Diana Ross; Aretha Franklin, and even Elvis. As I picked these tracks, I kept smiling and flashing back to the first time I'd heard them (yeah, I'm that old). It's been a fun walk down memory lane for me, and an even more fun notion thinking of how I'll drop each of these into a live set. Why? Well, not only because I can, but really, because they're that good and that fun! So, here you go, a collection of new remixes of some great songs dating back over the past 30 years, proving once again, that Everything Old is New Again!

What was Old is New Again. A Meeting of Art and Scholarship | Conference Fri, 21.11.2008 – Sun, 23.11.2008 Modern day Chinese, believers or not, derive their "picture" of Christianity from copies of Medieval and Renaissance ecclesiastical paintings inserted in books on the Bible as illustrations. These artworks constitute a vital medium for introducing Christianity to China. Every religion, political ideology, philosophy, and scientific theory embodies a set of structured beliefs. These belief systems maintain a symbiotic liaison with the arts. Throughout history, communal beliefs have relied on music, theater, painting, and dance in order to propagate accepted doctrines, and the arts in turn have shaped the articles of faith. The conference brings together artists and scholars in an unusual forum. The arts addressed deal primarily with media, the major art form that has only come to the fore in recent decades. The scholarship concerns antique matters, such as Sumerian music, early Egyptian medicine, and the omens, codes of law, and creation myths of Mesopotamia. The divergent perspectives of the participants augur well for innovative ideas emerging from this close encounter between scholarship, the arts, and the belief systems of early and modern times.

What was Old is New Again. A Meeting of Art and Scholarship | Conference Fri, 21.11.2008 – Sun, 23.11.2008 What lies beyond metaphysics? A great deal for Alfred Jarry (1873-1909), a playwright and culture jammer who coined the term Pataphysics. It is a philosophy that takes in everything written and everything sung and everything done, and like metaphysics has the virtue of meaning whatever you want it to mean. Pataphysics offers a voyage of discovery and adventure into realms where philosophers seldom venture, including art, activism, and onto the street. Dada, Futurism, Surrealism acknowledged the influence of Pataphysics, and nowadays the tradition is carried on by US-based ensembles Act-up/New York, Billboard Liberation Front, Yes Men, Cacophony Society, Negativeland, Improv Everywhere, Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping. The biting satire of their parodies and absurd theater make effective social commentary. Every religion, political ideology, philosophy, and scientific theory embodies a set of structured beliefs. What was Old is New Again. A Meeting of Art and Scholarship | Conference Fri, 21.11.2008 – Sun, 23.11.2008 Although Islam has prohibited sculpturing, the grand master of all Ottoman architects, namely Sinan, was able to surmount this ban skillfully. He regarded the limitations as a challenge for his creativeness. During his half a century long career as the chief architect of Ottoman Empire, he transformed bridges, aqueducts, small buildings, and grandiose complexes into enduring monuments. The aesthetics of these works went far beyond his contemporaries and his predecessors. Architecture was the language he used to express, not only the religious believes, but also his artistic creativity. By the end of the 16th century, Istanbul, where he gave most of his works, became “Sinan’s Istanbul”. This paper aims to reveal the art and science that is the essence of his achievement. What was Old is New Again. A Meeting of Art and Scholarship | Conference Fri, 21.11.2008 – Sun, 23.11.2008 While many artists have employed aleatory elements in their work including ceramic effects, Chinese ink blot drawing and Cozens' blot technique, it has been in the 20th century that chance has become an overt aesthetic or anti-aesthetic strategy. At first with Duchamp, dada and Surrealism's psychic automatism and later with John Cage, chance and randomness have become part of the standard new tool box. But it is the use of random number generation that marks the dividing line between traditional art and digital work. Generative programs, sims, data visualization and other mimetic digital work represent the fountain head of the artist encountering the ability to simulate nature through computer generated random numbers. But to move further we need to examine what is the difference between computer generated random numbers, which are themselves a simulation and what it is to tap into the ultimate source of randomness. Concentrating on the clicks from a Geiger counter brings us into direct communion with the fabric of time and space. It is the sound of the raw material unconscious. You can't keep a good song down, or from the hands of remixers! It's something to be grateful for, actually; especially in light of the track listing for this set. Here are some old favorites, made fresh again, and honestly, they've never really sounded better! Spanning eras from the '60's to the '90's, from "classic rock" to "new wave," with artists as diverse as Pink Floyd, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, the Eurythmics and David Bowie to name a few, each of these songs has been tremendously influential in their own time. Some have held up for decades, being remixed again and again for contemporary audiences, while others, are going under the remixer's hand for the first time. No matter what, though, all of these mixes can be traced no further back than 2004, with Danny Howell's take on Donna Summer's signature song, "I Feel Love". "Everything Old is New Again" brings them all together, in an effort to take you on a journey through the years, and show just how much has and hasn't changed in that time; you could even say this set was decades in the making!
