Hauptmann a.D.

Matty Dalrymple talks with Kevin J. Anderson and Johanna Parkhurst about LEARN TO WRITE IT, LEARN TO PUBLISH IT, about Western Colorado University's master's programs in publishing and genre fiction, which treat commercial fiction as worthy of serious study and teach students every step from manuscript to market. Join us for What Stayed, a live Season Two gathering. March 31 · Virtual · Free · Limited spots · konu.org/eventsMindfulness has become respectable. It improves focus. It reduces stress. It helps leaders perform under pressure. But what if mindfulness isn't primarily about performance? In this episode of On the Balcony, Michael Koehler sits down with Dr. Matthias Birk—organizational psychologist, executive coach, former Global Head of Coaching & Advisory at Goldman Sachs, Global Director of Partner Development at White & Case, Zen teacher, and founder of Self-Transcendent Leadership. What unfolds is not a conversation about mindfulness as a productivity tool. It's a conversation about perspective.Matthias distinguishes between what he calls within-paradigm mindfulness—using meditation to cope more skillfully within the identity you already inhabit—and beyond-paradigm mindfulness, which loosens that identity altogether. One reduces suffering within the game. The other questions the game itself. At the heart of the episode is a passage from Rainer Maria Rilke:Be forever dead in Eurydice, singingly rise, praisingly rise, back into pure relation. Here, among the vanishing, be—in the realm of demise. Be the pulsating glass, shattered yet of its own vibration. Be—and yet know the non-being's ground, The infinite bottom of your innermost sound. So that you might complete it—this one only time. For Matthias, meditation isn't an accessory to leadership. It's not like playing golf. It's about being fully alive in the here and now—and discovering what remains when achievement, anxiety, and identity begin to soften. What You'll Explore in This EpisodeMeditation before it was fashionable Matthias began practicing Zen as a teenager, long before mindfulness entered corporate vocabulary.Within-paradigm vs. beyond-paradigm mindfulness Mindfulness can help you manage stress inside demanding roles. But it can also invite you to question who you are beyond those roles.Achievement and insecurity From McKinsey to Goldman Sachs to global leadership, Matthias reflects candidly on ambition and belonging—and how meditation shifted his relationship to that inner voice.Self-transcendence Drawing on Abraham Maslow's later work, Matthias explores what it means to move beyond ego-centered striving toward expression, service, and alignment with something larger.Leadership as expression What if leadership isn't about constructing a persona—but about listening deeply enough to express what's already there, this one only time?Quotes from This Episode"Meditation is not a hobby. It's not like playing golf. It's not something you do on the side. It is about being fully alive in the here and now." — Dr. Matthias Birk"If you don't brush your teeth, they're going to rot. If you don't brush your mind, it's going to come up with not great stuff." — Dr. Matthias Birk"The real benefit of mindfulness is that you can live a free life." — Dr. Matthias Birk"One of the saddest things is to live a life and never hear your innermost sound." — Dr. Matthias BirkLinks & ResourcesSelf-Transcendent Leadership — Dr. Matthias Birk https://www.self-transcendent.com/Publications & Articles by Dr. Matthias Birk https://www.matthiasbirk.com/publicationsSelected...

This week on the "Hot Takes" vaporwave talk show, longtime podcast hosts Birk and Ross from Night Clerk Radio decided to do a crossover episode with us! Hosting two guests instead of just the typical one, we got to hear a myriad of thoughts and opinions on topics from them, ranging from liminal spaces and the backrooms, staying apprised of current outsider music and music history, and their commitment to watching awful films. With backgrounds in film and podcasting, Birk and Ross have a daunting degree of knowledge of art, film, and music between the two of them, and Ross evens runs an award-winning tabletop role-playing game podcast as well! Their production value is off the charts, they are both juggernauts of pop culture, and they both have a deep love of unintentionally bad art. During the evening that we spent with the boys from Night Clerk Radio, we talked about how to brainstorm content for an online talk show, over-categorization and granular niche genres, and decorum when throwing a live vaporwave show. Come for the shared love of Boards of Canada, and stay for the conversations about the best and worst tropes in horror cinema. What is the Long John Silver fuck tub? You're only going to find out if you watch the episode! "Hot Takes" is a safe space for all opinions! Join the conversation at https://linktr.ee/hottakesvapor

Lady Anne is in the Cotswolds with her 8-month-old son, there to restore a famous walled garden. The magnificent home has been hosting a television cooking special over the summer, and Anne's husband, Lord Terrence Reid, is there to enjoy a “Summer of Chefs” week with his wife and baby son. Reid's parents have also been invited to spend the week and are looking forward to delicious food, although Reid's father is recovering from a recent heart attack. Each week, a new chef prepares magnificent meals, and the mystery chef that week turns out to be the former lover of Reid's mother. Theirs is not the only family Gareth Talbot has affected with his sly machinations. He's there to settle old scores and cash in on decades-old grudges. Although the setting is serene and the food fantastic, Lord Terrence Reid is called upon to uncover a murderer in their midst, and his family members are among the suspects. The menu is the last thing on their minds. Mary Birk is a former trial lawyer and avid gardener who lives and writes in Colorado. After graduating from law school, she moved from North Dakota with her late husband to Colorado where they raised their children and dogs and together worked to turn two and a half acres into a high-country garden retreat. The first book in the series, Mermaids of Bodega Bay, was a finalist for the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers' Colorado Gold award in the mystery/suspense category and was named by Library Journal as a SELF-e Top Book of the Year.

Leaving middle age and approaching retirement is often portrayed as a time to settle into comfortable patterns and perhaps explore grand adventures. The common view suggests that after you've spent a lifetime building satisfying relationships, now there's time to sit back and enjoy them, to lean into the habits you enjoy, to stop working so hard at everyday things. Unless everything in your world gets turned on its head and all the familiar, comfortable things start to disappear. What do you do if death or divorce, or both, kick your comfortable world into the gutter, if your golden years threaten to turn into lead? Is there an alchemy that can turn those lead years back into gold? Szifra Birke and Jay Livingston feel they have done just that. They've forged a rich 25-year marriage from the detritus of four divorces and a spouse's death. In their insightfully revealing and quirky book, In Tandem: Pedaling Through Mid-life on a Bicycle Built for Two, they share how they took the scattered pieces of their two very different lives and worked to create a joint, satisfying experience where, as two very different people, they each could thrive. These two are both intensely committed to growing ever more aware of their internal speedbumps and the opportunities to laugh themselves into tears. About Szifra Birke and Jay Livingston: Szifra Birke is an Executive Leadership Coach and the country's first Financial Behavior Specialist. For her groundbreaking work with financial professionals and their clients, Szifra has appeared in Business Week, in addition to industry publications such as Investment News. In her first career, she co-authored Together We Heal, a book about psychotherapy for adults with parental alcoholism. She coauthored with Jay Livingston, In Tandem: Pedaling Through Midlife on a Bicycle Built for Two. Jay Livingston is retired from an eclectic career as an executive coach, a prize-winning antique boat restorer, a renowned dog behaviorist, and Director of Development for a Harvard Hospital. He is the author of Simple Steps to Change Your Business, Your Life. His dozen other vocations and avocations are a case study in excellence run amok. He has appeared on NOVA and, in the 70s, an automotive garage he managed was recognized by Ralph Nader.
