Stāsta džeza mūziķis un vēsturnieks Indriķis Veitners; pārraides producente – Anete Ašmane-Vilsone 1962. gada 18. decembrī Rīgā notika pasākums, kuru iespējams definēt kā pašu pirmo Latvijas džeza festivālu. To organizēja džeza mūziķu domubiedru grupa, kas izveidojās Rīgas kinostudijas paspārnē ar nosaukumu KIKOK – kino-komjauniešu klubs. Kaut arī klubam izdevās noorganizēt tikai vienu lielāku pasākumu, tas ir pirmais džeza festivāls Latvijā. KIKOK sākumi bija kinostudijas jauniešu organizētas neformālas tikšanās – diskusijas, kuros tika rādītas un apspriestas jaunākās studijas filmas, diskutēts par profesionālajiem un radošiem jautājumiem. Pasākumi noslēdzās ar saviesīgo daļu – dejām un džeza mūziku. No šiem pasākumiem tad arī pakāpeniski radās jauniešu organizācija komjaunatnes paspārnē ar nosaukumu KIKOK – kino-komjauniešu klubs. Tā kā kluba organizētajos pasākumos piedalījās arī citu mākslu pārstāvji – mūziķi un mākslinieki –, jau drīz pie KIKOK bija izveidojusies mūziķu grupa, kas regulāri spēlēja kluba rīkotajos pasākumos. Galvenokārt tā bija jaunā mūziķu paaudze, studenti, kas visi kā viens bija aizrāvušies ar džezu. Par kluba organizēšanas galvenajiem iniciatoriem kļuva dziedātājs un vēlāk kinoaktieris Bruno Oja un kontrabasists Juris Āķis, taču klubā darbojās arī konservatorijas pasniedzējs, muzikologs Pēteris Pečerskis. Jau drīz radās ideja par lielāka pasākuma organizēšanu. Tas notika tolaik A. Popova Rīgas radio rūpnīcas klubā Radiotehnikas ielā 41 (tagad – Mūkusalas iela 72b). Kā stāsta Juris Āķis, sākotnējā iecere ir bijusi organizēt pasākumu 23. decembrī, tātad faktiski Ziemassvētkos, taču sarunās ar kluba vadību kā pasākuma datums nolikts 18. decembris. Pasākuma programmas tika iespiestas izdevniecībā "Zvaigzne", kur tolaik strādāja Jura Āķa māsa. Tomēr pasākuma galvenais idejiskais līderis un vilcējspēks ir bijis Bruno Oja, kurš bija harismātiska personība un lielisks organizators. Pēc atmiņām koncerts ir bijis 4 stundas garš, un klātienē to dzirdējuši apmēram 800 klausītāju. Koncertā ir piedalījušies piecpadsmit sastāvi, no kuriem pieci ir bijuši orķestri, bet pārējie – trio, kvarteti un kvinteti, nereti ar tiem pašiem mūziķiem mainīgās kombinācijās. Kā līderi jāmin toreiz pavisam jaunie Raimonds Raubiško, Ivars Vīgners, Ivars Birkāns, Aivars Zītars, Juris Kļava, Zigurds Rezevskis, Raimods Pauls, džeza vokālais trio (Bruno Oja, Ieva Lūkina un Džeks Polis), tobrīd ļoti populārā restorāna "Metropole" orķestra dziedātāja Mirdza Cīrule, u.c. Jura Āķa arhīvā ir saglabājusies uz lapām rakstīta festivāla koncerta secība ar dalībnieku sastāviem un spēlēto repertuāru, kā arī fotogrāfiju albums ar vairākiem desmitiem koncerta fotogrāfiju, kurās fiksēta festivāla norise. Šie saglabātie materiāli kopumā ļauj samērā precīzi noteikt mūziķu sastāvus un personālijas, spēlēto repertuāru un lielā mērā rada priekšstatu par šo notikumu. Unikāls ir fakts, ka koncerts tika ierakstīts – dažus gadus iepriekš Juris Āķis bija strādājis kā skaņu režisors Latvijas Radio, un, pateicoties tam, bija noorganizēts Latvijas Radio ieraksts – koncerta fiksācija lentē (ieraksta režisori Kārlis Grīnbergs un Zigurds Sesks). Tomēr veiktais ieraksts turpmākajos gados, visticamāk, nodzēsts, jo Latvijas Radio fonotēkā nav atrodams. Diemžēl pasākuma laiks bija izvēlēts vissliktākais iespējamais – tieši 1962. gada nogalē politiskā spriedze starp ASV un PSRS sasniedza savu apogeju saistībā ar Kubas raķešu krīzi. Šādā kontekstā amerikāņu džeza mūzikas atskaņošana varas acīs bija nepieļaujama. Varas pārstāvjus saniknoja arī fakts, ka pasākums tika noorganizēts, būtībā apejot jebkādas oficiālas iestādes. KIKOK un tā organizētais koncerts saņēma smagu kritiku no Latvijas KP vadītāja Augusta Vosa Latvijas inteliģences sanāksmē 1963. gada 3. aprīlī, kur tika nosaukts par "mazvērtīgas, pēc savas izcelsmes ārzemju džeza mūzikas "apustuli", kas propagandē džeza mūzikas sliktākos paraugus, un pat kāda I. Birkāna ierosinātos nepieļaujamos A. Borodina un F. Šopēna darbu aranžējumus". Pēc šādas kritikas KIKOK darbība tika pārtraukta un džeza vārds uz vairākiem gadiem gandrīz pilnībā pazūd no Latvijas preses slejām. Nākamais mēģinājums Latvijā organizēt džeza festivālu ir tikai 1976. gadā, kad pirmo reizi Rīgā notiek "Vasaras ritmi". Šī festivāla organizatori jau ir pavisam citi cilvēki, un 1975. gadā dibinātais Rīgas džeza klubs kļūst par vienu no nozīmīgākajiem džeza dzīves organizētājiem Latvijā līdz pat 1991. gadam. KIKOK nozīme nav tikai kā vēsturiski pirmajam džeza festivālam Latvijā. Šis pasākums deva spēcīgu impulsu tā laika jaunajiem mūziķiem un džeza faniem Latvijā turpināt spēlēt un pilnveidoties, parādīja, ka, par spīti oficiāli valdošajai nelabvēlīgajai attieksmei, ar atjautību un enerģiju ir iespējams paveikt šķietami neiespējamas lietas, un zināmā mērā arī kļuva par sava veida atskaites punktu tālākajai Latvijas džeza attīstībai, par ko uzskatāmi liecina vairuma festivāla dalībnieku tālākie likteņi. Theirs is not the only family Gareth Talbot has affected with his sly machinations. He's there to settle old scores and cash in on decades-old grudges. Although the setting is serene and the food fantastic, Lord Terrence Reid is called upon to uncover a murderer in their midst, and his family members are among the suspects. The menu is the last thing on their minds. Mary Birk is a former trial lawyer and avid gardener who lives and writes in Colorado. After graduating from law school, she moved from North Dakota with her late husband to Colorado where they raised their children and dogs and together worked to turn two and a half acres into a high-country garden retreat. Ms. Birk has been named a Library Journal SELF-E Select author. Her Terrence Reid/Anne Michaels mystery series combines her love for gardening and passion for all things Scottish.
