I have been thinking about making a second edition of Base Raiders. Back in October 2022, I ran a playtest to try out some ideas before I focused on the night clerk zine. I recently remembered that I had this epsiode, so here it is. Tom and Chris make characters and then we try a short adventure. Enjoy!
Caleb and I discuss the possibility of creating a second edition of Red Markets and Base Raiders. It's a major task, so examining the pros and cons is a necessary first step. Updating the mechanics, revising the lore, and improving the information design are all big challenges, not to mention

World building is a fun part of preparing a game but it's still work. Sometimes you may need help generating ideas. James D'Amato from the One Shot podcast released a new book called The Ultimate RPG Game Master's Worldbuilding Guide, which contains many exercises to build up a world. James and I went through one of the exercises to expand upon my game, Base Raiders. What happens 5 years after base raiding is commonplace? What magic and technology spreads across the world? You won't believe how important crabs are in the future of Base Raiders! If you like this episode, consider picking up a copy of James' book.

Since Cyberpunk is the rage today, we explore a very loosely defined cyberpunk setting, in the interest of seeing whether the group would like to expand on it. In a mysterious event, the world's legacy of superheroes have all vanished, leaving the Earth as mundane and normal as it has ever been. However, superhuman things still occur in the future. Earth's first interplanetary war occurred, with a psychic alien race that are slang referred to as the Grey. Earth's countries were fragmented by the assault, but the A.I. development by numerous high-level companies supplied robotic forces to help supplement and eventually turn the tide of the Grey war. Then those sapient robots had their own rebellion that was barely put down. Now three races live in a city, full of megacorps, specist tensions, and an ever-weakening city government. Into this city on the brink, new faces arrive. ((Much love to Base Raiders, XCOM, and Overwatch for certain historical elements)) Characters: 16 - A robot melee expert from Japan that's obsessed with proper advertisement schemes Saint Luke - A small time doctor whose past as a military corporate elite urges him to do more Agent Martinez - Last agent of SHIELD, who cannot explain why he didn't disappear like all the rest. (Bionics/Secret Operative) Hound - A superhuman investigator with an uncanny read on people Arn Swartz (Watchman) - Super soldier. Former corporate type of the Redguard, had a crisis of conscience. The members of the Gate 9 crew only sought out superpowers to protect themselves from the government. Now, it has become so much more than that. They have fought monsters, the police, alien invaders, cults, and other base raiders. Their old lives are in shambles and each has nearly died more than once. Peace, they will never know. But in this campaign finale, they have a chance to find peace, reclaim their lives, and no longer face a life of constant battle and strife. Is it worth the price? Find out what they choose and how the world changes! Thanks for listening and please, buy my book.
In order to finish their mission, the Gate 9 crew must take control of a base on the moon. Getting there won't the problem. They have a teleporter after all. But who knows who has been left on the moon and what they're up to?
Demise, a powerful elder being, threatens the entire universe. A hero from another dimension has come to stop it and the Gate 9 crew is joining him for his battle against the entity. With the fate of the world at stake, can this unlikely group of heroes preserve?
The Gate 9 crew returns to the Aral Sea to recover an alien weapon of mass destruction. Different factions control the region now, one seemingly themed after post-apocalyptic fashion trends, while another uses inspirational business advice as its basis. All use whatever means they can to give themselves superpowers. Retrieving the alien weapon without letting it fall into a faction's control will prove difficult.
The Gate 9 crew needs mystical artifacts as part of their mission to save the world from an ancient evil. Many powerful artifacts were kept in a vault hidden in a magical realm far from Earth. The heroes must travel to the vault, overcome its traps, and defeat the guardian within. Sometimes victory is achieved through cunning and not brute strength, a lesson the heroes may have to learn...
The Gate 9 crew heads to Hawaii to fight the cult of Logos. Specifically, they need to find the leader who knows the details of Logos' ascension ritual and get him to reveal it to them. That won't be easy. The cult has a compound built from a UFO, alien guards, high tech weapons, and more. But the Gate 9 team has a few tricks up their own sleeves..
The Gate 9 crew must travel to an fantastical realm in another universe as part of a larger quest to save the world. They must contend with strange monsters, such as a mechanical dragon, and the spirits of the unquiet dead. Even once they reach their goal, will they be able to reach the heart of the labyrinth?
In order to fight the cult of Logos and the Crystal Children, the Gate 9 crew must secure a powerful occult artifact before either side seizes it. Doing so without outside help may be impossible, so who will the crew turn to?
The Gate 9 crew wants to capture the Biobuddy market! There's a rival gym in the Rocky Mountains though. So our heroes head to the Rockies to take it over. A giant rock monster has something to say about that though, possibly with giant rocky fists.
The Gate 9 crew is visiting the robot graveyard as part of their quest to save the world from a cosmic threat. It contains many pieces of high technology but a strange ecosystem has sprung around it. The heroes must navigate the various hazards, deal with the local inhabitants, and fight a powerful villain. All in a day's work for the Gate 9 crew!
A being from beyond time and space now threatens a major city. Only the Gate 9 crew can stop the monster's hunt but to do so, they must confront it directly, trapped in the city. Faced between saving civilians and fighting the monster, the team has to split up to save the day. Can they succeed?
A secret war has begun in the shadows. Two cults, one led by the spirit Logos and the other by Haruspex, a powerful psychic, vie for domination. The Gate 9 crew does not trust either group, so they must find what they are doing and put a stop to it. They will need allies for this mission, so they must find them...
The Biobuddy fighting circuit is a dark and dangerous subculture, where money is more important than anything else. Trainers do everything to get their Biobuddy to win arena fights, even if it means dirty tricks. In order to take over the Biobuddy circuit, the Gate 9 crew needs to identify the major players and that means going undercover.
The global tier begins! A year later, the Gate 9 crew has partially resolved their own problems and have become full time base raiders. Except for Trey, who runs the Brass Door, a post-scarcity bar and hangout. However, a new alien appears, Kyrzyyk, a frog-like warrior with a complicated back story, is now on earth and needs their help on a mission of vital importance! Art by Lauren Ftaghn!
Base Raiders is a fun game, but creating new super powers can be complicated. Someone asked for a podcast that helped clarify the process, so here it is. The Gate 9 crew is trying to help Jeff claim his family's fortune and in order to do that, they need the help of one woman in particular. She needs an item from a hidden base in return. Standing between them and that base is a deranged vigilante named Exemplar. Also, the team meets a nice friendly dog named Jefferson.
The Gate 9 team needs to check out a recently discovered base. It has a vast menagerie of genetically engineered fighting animals conditioned to obey the orders of the adolescents that capture them and use them for pit fighting. It's been sealed off since Ragnarok, so no one knows how bad it's gotten since then.
Trey and Saul each have a goal that takes them to the New York Underground and the rest of the crew tags along. Trey wants an Ideal Teleporter to upgrade the Brass Door. Saul wants to consult with Charon, the mythical ferry keeper and possibly the most powerful supernatural being on the planet. Between shrink rays and wandering ghouls, both team members have their work cut out for them!
The Gate 9 crew find themselves in the middle of the civil rights for non-humans struggle. A massive rally is being held in Chicago, near the Brass Door and the team must do what they can to prevent any violence from breaking out. The government wants to stop or discredit the protestors, of course, but countering them without getting out a public fight is easier said than done.
The Gate 9 team is heading into space! Well, Mars, to be more specific. After figuring out how to operate an Ideal teleporter, the team can now access a hidden base on the red planet. Of course, the Ideal had their own secrets to keep and some of the darkest ones are on Mars. What will the team find and how will they deal with the base's current inhabitants? Because an abandoned Martian base is never fully abandoned...
The Gate 9 crew has a new lead on an Ideal base in the Southwest, a former Ideal-centered town called Idealville. However, the town has a dark secret in an abandoned mine just out of city limits. The town's economy is booming, so it seems everyone is in on it, but what exactly is the scam and more importantly can our intrepid heroes discover it and still make it out alive?

The government doesn't know what to do with all the extradimensional beings, space aliens, and other non-humans running around. They've captured quite a few and locked them up in a massive prison. Fortunately, they have a potential savior, Sparkles the Unicorn. Of course, trusting Sparkles can be dangerous in of itself. A hapless group of prisoners is about to find out what happens when they join Sparkles for an adventure...
The actions of the Gate 9 team have led to a citywide crackdown by the government. That won't deter the new base raiders from scheming though. A government storage facility has some mighty nice loot, just there for the taking. What could go wrong? If you enjoy Base Raiders, why not pick up a copy? Get the book and PDF for only $21!
The Gate 9 team is beginning to settle into their new digs at the Brass Door, a former villain headquarters/pub right in the heart of Chicago. However, other factions, like MISCHIEF, want to exploit the naive base raiders for their own gain. The team also needs to sell some loot to a corporation, but a rival team of base raiders wants to stop them for some reason. Will team Gate 9 bother to find out why or just start punching them? Let's find out! If you enjoy Base Raiders, consider buying the Print + PDF combo for 30% off!
Even the heroes of Gate 9 need an occasional break from raiding bases and fighting villains. Thanks to crowdfunding, three brilliant cinematic legends, Tommy Wiseau, Neil Breen, and James Nguyen, were able to create a movie they co-wrote, starred, and directed called The Marcy's Invisible Veranda of Infinite Light. Find out what twists and turns are in this fine piece of cinema in this very serious movie! In order to capture its brilliance, I used the RPG It Came From the Late, Late, Late Show with some house rules to run this very important and possibly solah-powered game.
Now linked by new super powers and a shared history, the Gate 9 team must figure out their place in the world. They are drawn to investigate an area near the Ural Sea that once had an Ideal facility. The sea is now empty but supernatural mysteries still abound. A floating and invisible tomb of an ancient sorcerer may hold resources the team needs. What still lurks within its walls? And now, the second half of Saurian Solutions LLC! Our heroes plan their attack on Mr Tyrranous, getting allies from rebels within the saurian ranks. They also get help from the outside, as a grizzled old SAS soldier, who also happens to be a werewolf, joins the fight. They also seek help from a local militia that has been trapped in the jungle. But will these armed, and somewhat crazy gunmen be more trouble than they are worth?

A group of Base Raiders find themselves trapped in the Graveyard of Giant Robots. Built by the Ideal, it is a state-sized cavern in the mantle of the Earth. The old heroes used it to store dead kaiju, wrecked alien spaceships, and decommissioned giant robots. Access is only through teleporters found in various Ideal safehouses but getting in is a lot easier than getting out. Paying for a teleport back to the surface is quite expensive, so the base raiders decide to take a job. Alien refugees want a particular computer back, which is somewhere in the depths of the Graveyard. Finding it in the thousands of square miles of kaiju corpses, swampland, car-sized kaiju parasites, and malfunctioning armed robots, is easier said than done. Who will they find in the Graveyard? Why is the alien computer here? Who is using it? Find out in this special one shot!

While looking into the increased activities within the NYC criminal rings, the hero inventor Iconoclast discovers two disturbing facts. One, there seems to be a rise in casualties on all sides that the gangs are not talking about, specifically with Luytein refugees that have been "recruited" as specialized enforcers. And two, it appears that these Luytein enforcers have had the majority of their cybernetic implants stripped. Researching further into the attacks, Iconoclast finds CCTV footage of one of the attacks, revealing the perpetrator to be the hero know as the Steel Centurion. Realizing that the Steel Centurion has either gone rogue or someone else has acquired the armor, Iconoclast calls on four local Base Raiders to find out why the one-time hero has had a change of heart and what he plans to do with the stolen Luytein technology.
