Richard Linklater's Dazed & Confused On this week's episode we explore 1976 through the eyes of 1993, with Richard Linklater's slacker/high-school masterpiece, Dazed & Confused. Linklater's love letter to high school coming-of-age films is one of the stand-out productions of early 90s independent cinema; a film that blends aimless storytelling with a pounding and nostalgic 70s soundtrack, to reminisce on the good, bad, boring, and character forming experiences of growing up. Juniors becoming Seniors, Middle-Schoolers transitioning to High School, Dazed & Confused is much more than a re-creation of Texas in 1976. Linklater's film is a funny, touching, and - surprisingly - heart-warming story of finding ones' way, selling out, peaking in high school, and imagining the future and ones' place in it. It's about the friendships we make and how so much of that plays a part in building our individual characters. Dazed & Confused is a cult classic which began the careers of Jason London, Adam Goldberg, Joey Lauren Adams, Cole Hauser, Nicky Katt, Parker Posey, and Matthew McConaughey. It's a thrill for Mr. Chavez & I to return to this classic and examine how so much of it mirrors our own lives. Take a listen and let us know what you think. https://teachhoops.com/ The debate over youth player rankings in the AAU circuit is one of the most polarizing topics in modern basketball development. On one hand, proponents argue that rankings provide exposure and a competitive benchmark, helping talented athletes get on the radar of college recruiters earlier than ever before. For a player in a rural area or a non-traditional basketball market, a high ranking from a reputable scouting service can be the "digital resume" that opens doors to elite camps and scholarship opportunities. However, the "Helpful" side of the ledger often ignores the reality that early physical maturity is frequently mistaken for long-term elite potential, leading to a "false positive" ranking for a player who has simply hit their growth spurt sooner than their peers. The "Harmful" perspective focuses on the psychological and developmental "Rot" that occurs when 12- and 13-year-olds are labeled as "elite" before they've even entered high school. Rankings often incentivize "stat-padding" and individualistic play over the development of "Basketball IQ" and fundamental team concepts. When a young player is more concerned with their "National Top 100" status than winning a game or making the "extra pass," the foundational "Culture of the Game" begins to erode. Furthermore, being ranked early can lead to a "fixed mindset"—a belief that they have already "made it"—which often results in a plateau in work ethic during the critical developmental years of 14 to 17. Ultimately, the impact of rankings depends heavily on the parental and coaching ecosystem surrounding the athlete. If a ranking is treated as a "Starting Line" rather than a "Finish Line," it can be a tool for motivation. However, in the high-pressure environment of "shoe-circuit" AAU tournaments, rankings often serve as a distraction from true skill acquisition. Use your TeachHoops member calls to discuss how to navigate these "Ranking Waters" with your players and parents. By shifting the focus back to "Process over Praise," you can ensure that your athletes stay grounded, hungry, and focused on the only ranking that truly matters: their progress compared to the player they were yesterday. We knew that reading levels were in fluctuation, but we had no idea there was a Middle School reading crisis. According to the NWEA (The Northwest Evaluation Association which measures academic and student standards) only 30% of 8th graders are reading at grade level or above. Why? How did we get here and how do we get back on track raising great readers who love literature? We are joined by Miah Daughtery, VP of Academic Advocacy at HMH, NWEA's parent company, to talk about their policy recommendations. We also talk to Rick Riordan and Katherine Rundell, two of the bestselling MS writers in the world about how to write for Middle Schoolers and why they think this audience needs attention. The Construction Science Expo was held Sept. 30, 2025. Their 14th year overall and third year occurring in the Lansing area. This hands-on event introduces youth to skilled trades and construction careers, giving them the chance to try activities like bricklaying, electrical wiring, and heavy equipment operation. T3 and Capital Area Michigan Works! hosted it at Impressions 5 Science Center and in a parking lot across the street at property belonging to Lansing BWL (Board of Water & Light). This video shares a pair of interviews and footage of the Middle Schoolers experiencing the event in downtown Lansing. Lansing Hosts 3rd Annual Construction Science Expo, Inspiring the Next Generation of Skilled Trades Professionals LANSING, Mich. — September 30, 2025 — The Lansing region welcomed hundreds of eager middle school students today, for the 3rd Annual Lansing Construction Science Expo, hosted in partnership by T3 (Teach. Talent. Thrive.), Capital Area Michigan Works!, and the ACEC Michigan chapter. Now in its 14th year overall, this is the third time the event has taken place in the Lansing area. The hands-on expo was held at the Impressions 5 Science Center and adjacent lots owned by the Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL). The expo gave students a unique opportunity to get their hands dirty with real construction tasks — from electrical wiring and bricklaying to heavy equipment simulators — under the guidance of industry professionals. The experience is designed to expose young learners to in-demand careers in the built environment and break down misconceptions about what careers in construction can be. As a highlight, event organizers invited regional firms and infrastructure stakeholders, including the City of Lansing, BWL, and local engineering firms, to host activity stations and mentor students. The expo aligns with the American Council of Engineering Companies-Michigan's commitment to support workforce development. The ACEC Michigan calendar lists the event as a key link between the engineering profession and the broader community. “Getting students to pour a footing or wire a test circuit with their own hands helps remove fear of trades and opens their eyes to real opportunities,” said a representative from ACEC Michigan. For sponsors, schools, and industry participants, the expo is more than outreach — it's a long-term investment in developing a workforce pipeline. Employers gain early exposure to future talent, while school partners receive access to resource lists, follow-up educational pathways, and industry contacts. Many participating firms provide apprenticeships, internships, and scholarships tied directly to their interactions at the event. Capital Area Michigan Works! and T3 plan to expand the event footprint in 2026, with outreach into rural school districts and additional construction discipline modules (such as plumbing, HVAC, and civil surveying). For more info, visit ACEC Michigan's event listing or contact Michigan Works! and T3 for participating schools and firms.

Keeping students, especially those in middle school, engaged can be difficult. Taylor White Brown, a teacher from Mississippi, joins today's episode to share simple yet powerful strategies that transform classroom dynamics without creating extra work for teachers while still focusing on student engagement. Taylor's approach begins with a refreshingly practical perspective: "Use what the curriculum is giving you. Don't make your job harder." Rather than reinventing lessons, she amplifies existing materials through activities like games, buzzers for responses, and friendly competitions that still put learning at the forefront. At the heart of Taylor's philosophy is relationship-building. "Kids are not going to learn from someone they do not like," she explains, describing how she maximizes every interaction—from hallway conversations to lunch periods—to create genuine connections. These small moments build the trust necessary for students to invest in their learning. When students disengage, Taylor quietly acknowledges their feelings while gently reminding them of their mutual commitment: "When Ms. Brown has a bad day, I show up for you. So Ms. Brown really needs you to show up for me today."Whether you're looking for more student engagement strategies or simply looking to refresh your teaching approaches, Taylor's practical wisdom offers immediately applicable techniques.

To make sure they have the ability to recognize good influences AND bad influences, we asked Laura Arndt to join us again to give us tips, strategies, and tactics to share the “words of eternal life” with our kiddos so that God's Word can be a treasure for them as well. Some may say those ages are some of the most challenging, but I really like that age group for so many reasons. This week's episode is packed with insights and practical advice for navigating the complexities of parenting during the middle school years. I'm joined by Courtney DeFeo, and together we dive into balancing love, independence, and the continuous learning process of parenting. Here are four key takeaways from this episode:Parenting evolves as children grow, and middle school years often require creative ways to re-engage with your kids. Allowing children to experience failure helps them develop responsibility and confidence. Overparenting can hinder independence—parents should guide their children through problems, not shield them from them. Self-care for parents is crucial to maintaining balance and avoiding guilt in the parenting journey. Courtney DeFeo is the host of the Pardon the Mess podcast here on the Christian Parenting Podcast Network where she encourages parents every week to be the imperfectly perfect parent God created them to be. She is also an author, speaker, and advocate for empowering parents to create lasting family connections. South Korea is going through an erase all faces panic. Every single selfie is being wiped from the internet just in case. As a response - a male college student wrote on a forum - “Put a finger down and ask yourself Have I ever been asked out or confessed to? (Joke confessions do not count) Do a lot of men try to talk to me even though I don't talk to them first? Have I ever looked into the mirror and resented my parents? Can other people recognize me without makeup? Do I weigh more than 145 pounds? Do I frequent feminist online forums? When I walk on the street, do children avoid me? If you answered yes to more than 3 of these questions - don't worry. Your rate of being a victim of sexual deep fakes is very low. Men have standards too. We don't just deepfake any woman.” This is the case of the “new Nth Rooms” where over 400 schools have been found to be operating illegal chatrooms where students are getting deepfaked into sexually explicit photos and videos. A whole network of deep fake trading and creating has been found. Most victims and perpetrators? Teenagers.
