Disability is Not a Costume with Freddie Stabb

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's episode I talk to actress and campaigner Freddie Stabb. In our conversation Freddie shares how as a person with a disability, she has navigated the world of acting for over 30 years. We discuss tokenism, how the representation of disability on screen is a powerful tool in shaping society's perception of disabled people and how that representation can be limiting and unrealistic. We also talk about the trials and tribulations of the casting process for actors with disabilities, and why casting able-bodied actors in disabled roles should be considered unacceptable, as disability is not a costume. So please join me as we look at life through a different lens.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Being bullied as a teenager for her disability gave Freddie the determination to pursue a career in acting. ‘Disabled blind casting' is a disservice to disabled actors, studios and people working with disabled actors need to recognise and understand an actor's disability to make the right accommodations for them. Freddie's lived experiences have allowed her to correct and amend things in the writing of her roles to make them more accurate and realistic, often educating those she works alongside. Writers and studios still aren't daring when it comes to casting disabled actors, they are frequently given smaller parts in shows, they are rarely the protagonists. If we can cgi able-bodied actors to having disabilities, then why aren't we doing the opposite? Disabilities aren't a costume. If disabled writers start to be recognised more and are given opportunities in mainstream media, then we will begin to see a more accurate representation of disabilities on screen. BEST MOMENTS "You wouldn't believe I've done half the things I have with my life” “There's this disabled blind casting which is kind of unrealistic” “It's really important to be able to educate the people around you” “There seems to be a big fear around disability (in casting)” “When is someone with a disability going to get a main role in a regular series” “My disability is not a costume” “If you have confidence in yourself as a human being it becomes easier to pass on the message” ABOUT THE GUEST Blog Having worked as an actress for over thirty years, Freddie's most recent work included 'The Witcher' Netflix, 'Breathtaking' ITV and 'Stephen' ITV. Her theatre work has included understudying for Liz Carr in 'The Normal Heart' at The National Theatre, 'The House of Bernarda Alba' at Royal Exchange in Manchester and projects including corporate, voice over and documentary presenting. One of her highlights was working with Mark Rylance and Johnathan Moore on 'What You Will', a pop-up Shakespeare project across London during the Paralympics in 2012.  She has been a vocal supporter of disability rights in the industry, working with Equity on their 'Deaf and Disabled Committee' over the years and is on the steering committee for Actor at the Centre, a campaign group who are working to return 1a Tower St (now 7 Dials Playhouse) to a home for actors by actors as its original purpose. Freddie is represented by Nicola Bolton Management.   Socials & Contact: Insta /FB /X : @freddiestabb   CONTACT METHOD FACEBOOK - https://www.facebook.com/caropartridge LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/caroline-partridge-03131520 Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/partridge_caroline

For our June episode of Mind Yo Business, your podcast master hosted Karan Rastall, all A's, in the Pritchett Brothers studio. We started this episode the Midwestern way by talking about the heat, sharing a dad joke, and then a great conversation began! Karan shares about being born into an Army family abroad (though the location is never revealed) and growing up in New Castle, IN as one of four children. She talks about how uninclined she was towards sports and how she sought an escape from small-town life. After a roller coaster ride to a bachelor's in Elementary Education, Karan shares how she ended up working full-time at a bank. We talk about the good times at IU: Preacher Dan on the corner and students in the green; sound advice for those still in college; why Karan never stepped foot in a classroom after completing student teaching; and so much more! This episode wraps up with a conversation about how Karan ended up where she is now – working at Ruoff Mortgage as a Senior Loan Officer. If you have ever ended up somewhere you never imagined for your career, have a love for sarcasm, or are interested in the loan/banking world...this is the episode for you! The Witcher Remake Gets Censored for CURRENT YEAR?

Will the remake of 'The Witcher' get nerfed for "modern audiences?" It sure does sound like it. Will it follow the Netflix series into further alienating and polarizing audiences of the original books and games? ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com ➡️ Audio Edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qJc5C6OkQkaZnGCeuVOD1 ➡️ Gaming News: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A7VIqE3r5MQkFgL9nifNc Additional Context: The buzz around "The Witcher Remake" getting censored for the current year seems to stem from CD Projekt Red's intention to update the original game by removing elements that are considered "simply bad" or outdated. In an effort to modernize "The Witcher" for today's gaming landscape, the studio has been candid about their plans to revamp parts of the game that haven't aged well since its initial release in 2007. This approach is part of their broader strategy to ensure the remake aligns with contemporary standards while retaining the essence and key pillars of the original game. The remake, built using Unreal Engine 5, is being developed by Fool's Theory under the supervision of CD Projekt Red, promising a fresh take on Geralt's initial adventure with modern graphics and potentially updated features. The speculation about the game's release suggests it might take a significant amount of time before it sees the light of day, with no official date confirmed yet. The development team has expressed their commitment to "doing the game right" for the players, indicating a meticulous approach to the remake that may extend its development timeline. PSFK Earnings Call Podcast: Netflix - NFLX

In the latest earnings call held by Netflix on Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024, the streaming giant unveiled their Q4 2023 report. During the call, the CEO highlighted a potentially monumental global deal with WWE stating, "We believe that WWE has been, historically, under-distributed outside of North America. And this is a global deal, so we can help them and they can help us build that fandom around the world." He also alluded to a prospective growth in the company's "new and growing ad business" as a result of this deal. Echoing the themes discussed in the earnings call — growth, diversification, and increased consumer engagement — the company's recent ventures serve as evidence of these strategic outlines. As a significant development, Netflix's decision to establish brick-and-mortar stores signifies an extended reach and diversified customer engagement strategy. The move's intention is to enhance brand visibility and establish additional revenue channels through the sale of themed merchandise and the organisation of special events. Netflix's foray into VR gaming presents another intriguing development, aligned with the company's objectives of broadening its offering and ramping up member engagement. The rollout of a game derived from the acclaimed series 'The Witcher' not only offers fans an innovative brand experience but might also draw an audience interested in VR gaming. Highlighting a diversification effort, Netflix launched 'Netflix Bites,' a pop-up restaurant, indicative of their ventures into fresh markets and new content. Offering a unique and immersive experience, the restaurant extends Netflix's influence into the culinary sphere, encouraging subscribers to engage with the brand in an unconventional form. The recent collaborative venture with 'Geralt's Gold,' a non-alcoholic beer inspired by 'The Witcher' series, further signifies the emphasis on collaborations and acquisitions made in the earnings call. This initiative is designed to extend Netflix's brand to a new market and forge a unique, tangible connection with the series. According to the CEO, the company has shared a detailed engagement report: "We have shown you in graphic detail what that engagement looks like on a title-by-title basis and this engagement report we just released." As reported, daily engagement with members approximates two hours, with their content drawing substantial audiences. However, these figures require constant efforts to keep audiences satisfied worldwide in multiple languages. To conclude, based on the company statements during the Q4 2023 earnings call it's evident Netflix's business activities align with its proclaimed focus of growth, diversification, and enhanced consumer engagement. Its ventures into brick-and-mortar stores, VR gaming, and the restaurant industry underscore its commitment to expanding reach and diversifying offerings. While strategic investments in new markets and partnerships position Netflix for possible future success, this success is contingent on navigating the dynamic entertainment industry's constant evolution. As a reminder, these claims or statements are based on what the Netflix company stated during their earnings call or acknowledged to its investors. It's the last BFG podcast of the year, and we wrap it up with a year's-end roundtable with Omar Gallaga and Scott Gold, who offer their TV-watching perspective with host Neal Pollack, who watches TV 18 to 20 hours a day. Best shows include 'Reservation Dogs,' 'Succession,' 'Scavenger's Reign,' and a sitcom called 'Primo' which Neal has never heard of but which you should watch. Worst shows include Season 3 of 'The Witcher,' 'Squid Game: The Challenge,' and Omar's controversial selection of the final season of 'The Other Two.' The critics also did not like the reboots of 'Frasier,' 'Night Court,' or 'That 70's Show' which is now 'That 90's Show.' Essential listening about essential viewing.Neal also spends many minutes talking to film critic Stephen Garrett about 'Poor Things,' a surrealist horror sex comedy that's in theaters now, just begging for Oscar nominations. Neal and Stephen admired Emma Stone's fully committed performance, and the movie's odd syntax and sex design, but both found its extended scenes in a French brothel to be kind of gratuitous and weirdly exploitative. Your mileage may vary. That's why God made critics and Book and Film Globe.Happy New Year!

This week's podcast is alive and well! Host Neal Pollack welcomes Michael Washburn to talk about everyone's favorite 90s dorm-room novelist, Milan Kundera. But Kundera was about far more than a 30-year-old undergraduate vogue, Washburn argues. He was a perennial Nobel Prize candidate whose best works laughed in the face of totalitarian oppression and showed a deep warmth and humanity. He understood the human condition as well as any writer has, and was a legitimate heir to Franz Kafka, but without Kafka's austerity. We bid him a fond goodbye. On a lesson serious note, 'Mission: Impossible–Dead Reckoning, Part One' is here. Stephen Garrett and Neal both hate the overwrought, nonsensical AI-oriented plot, and Tom Cruise's over-publicized motorcycle stunt doesn't impress Stephen. But there are some fun action set pieces they both like, and Neal is maybe a little over-enthusiastic about Cruise's many beautiful platonic female co-stars. But that's just par for the course in this ridiculous but fun summer action extravaganza that no one is taking particularly seriously. And no one is taking the new season of 'The Witcher' seriously at all. Scott Gold joins the The Witcher's disappointed fanbase in lamenting the overwrought politics storyline and the lack of monsters for Henry Cavill to fight. And once Cavill leaves the cast for season 4, The Witcher is going to vanish into the pop-culture mists pretty fast. Unlike this podcast, which covers the cultural waterfront now and forever. Enjoy!
