In this episode of Life in Motion, we sit down with David Long, founder of Eko Patagonia, a unique eco-lodge blending outdoor adventure with cultural immersion in the heart of Chilean Patagonia. David's journey began as a Rotary Youth Exchange student in Chile, where he was embraced by a host family who became his second home. Years later, a sabbatical from his corporate career led him back to Patagonia, inspiring him to create Eko Patagonia—a place where travelers can experience the beauty of the region while connecting deeply with its people and traditions. David shares how his lodge focuses on sustainability, from repurposing shipping containers to sourcing local ingredients for immersive farm-to-table experiences. He also introduces us to the concept of alive, awake, aware—a philosophy that helps guests embrace personal transformation through adventure, culture, and nature. Japan's Top Business Interviews Podcast By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

Ross Rowbury, Previous President of Edelman Japan, celebrated his 40th anniversary since first arriving in Japan as a Rotary Youth Exchange student. Mr. Rowbury began his career in the finance sector in banking and securities before moving on to PR roles specializing in finances. With several years of leadership experience in foreign financial firms, Mr. Rowbury made a smooth transition into PR where he embraced the creative and engagement aspect of the industry.  As the President of Edelman, the largest foreign PR firm in Japan with a rapidly growing team, Mr. Rowbury strives for strong communication and engagement with his staff, but takes a conscious step back when necessary. He explains, “I think, the key thing is that the leader needs to be able to identify where those turning points or tipping points [of change] are so that [you] don't become a bottleneck in that process.” Delegation also plays a large part in managing such a large team. To better lead his 80 employees, Mr. Rowbury is planning on welcoming a new COO to take on much of the operational decisions.  On the changing landscape of PR and modern audiences, Mr. Rowbury says ”you have to create a very strong narrative or storyline that makes them understand why it's relevant or important to them, or they're not going to stay there with you.” To make this possible, Edelman hires a diverse team of specialists who are talented planners and creatives, but do not necessarily “speak the same language” and work at various speeds. Mr. Rowbury tries to find the common ground between such differences through repeated discussions. He explains, “through a process of really intense discussions…over time, you are unable to get to a point where those three different definitions of product manager have actually melded into something that's unique for us. And that's where we want to be.”  In an ever-evolving world, Mr. Rowbury is aware of the younger employees' need for transparency and involvement in decision-making processes to have more trust in leadership. Through his regular lunch meetings with junior staff, Mr. Rowbury learned of the stress younger generations and implemented a wellness day to promote better mental health.  To foster creativity in a mistake-free culture like Japan, Mr. Rowbury explains, “these days a relatively small mistake can actually result in quite a significant impact to the business so I'm not quite sure…[if] it's okay to go out and make mistakes, is exactly the right message. I think it needs to be refined a little bit more, with some parameters around what sort of mistake is okay to make and what is not.” Additionally, Mr. Rowbury explain that being able to admit to one's mistake, recognize one's weaknesses and constantly learn, are all essential factors in adapting to such a rapidly changing society.  Mr. Rowbury advises newcomers to Japan to remember the three Ps – patience, persistence, and politeness - something he was first told as a new arrival himself. He explains that in Japan, everything takes more time and money, but when done, the end result is better than anywhere else. Mr. Rowbury also encourages newcomers to not be afraid of making the ask, but maintaining politeness by using phrases like onegaishimasu (please) and soundanga arimasu (I would like to consult you).

Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Cameron Davidson states: “So it's actually kind of funny. The first time I heard about Rotary, of course before I knew what it was, I kind of just thought it was a club of just older people who just, you know, hung out and would have conversations. So the very first time I actually heard of Rotary and had an experience with Rotary, was when I was a sophomore in high school. My English teacher had encouraged me to participate in the (Rotary) 4-Way speech contest that our local Rotary club was hosting and the grand prize was $100. So, 15-year-old me thought ‘Wow, $100! What can I not do with $100?' So of course, I uh, I signed up to participate, and I ended up coming in first place. And this was like the very first experience that I had with the Rotary club…. The Rotary 4-Way Test is kind of like this motto that Rotarians and people associated with the Rotary club follow. And it's essentially like a guide that guides your actions and your thoughts and what you say. And basically, it's just ensuring that everything that you say or do is true. It's fair to everyone concerned. It builds good will and better friendships. And it's beneficial to everybody concerned.”I'm your host, Keith Weedman. In each podcast episode, you will hear stories. These stories will feel like a tender wind blowing on the embers of service that glow within you. In this weekly show, you will learn ideas, kindling for your embers. It will be your choice to utilize the gentle wind to ignite the kindling. In this episode, Cameron Davidson recounts his multiple encounters with Rotary and putting service above self, beginning with winning $100 in the Rotary 4-Way Test speech competition as a high school sophomore. He shares how meeting high school students all around the world broadened his perception by participating in Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) program. He explains how participating in RYLA stimulated his interest in Rotary Youth Exchange. He talks about how attending school for one year in Mexico through Rotary Youth Exchange and living with a host family stimulated his interest in obtaining his education and then committing his career to peace and conflict prevention/resolution, one of the six areas of focus of The Rotary Foundation. He shares what it felt like to win Rotary District 6580's $40,000 Global Grant Scholarship Award to obtain his master's degree in Spain in Global and International Studies with a focus on nationalism and conflict management. He challenges people, including older people, to do things outside of their comfort zone. For those who want to connect with Cameron, he recommends connecting with him on Facebook or on Instagram. Much of their emphasis is on youth: a basketball and volleyball program for elementary school, providing summer camps for needy children, and sending local students abroad on Rotary Youth Exchange. Youth exchange (YEX) has long been a principal way that Rotary International promotes peach through friendship and cultural understanding. Rhinebeck Rotarian Mike Frazier is the coordinator for District 7210 of a new way for Rotary to support international youth exchanges, known as summer youth exchange or more formally as short-term youth exchange. In this program a family from one country exchanges for a few weeks or a month with a family from the other country. This is different from the regular school-year exchange in which the student who is incoming from another country or outgoing to one stays with three different host families; there is no reciprocal arrangement. The school-year exchange includes learning the language of the country visited, which is not a part of the short-term exchange. In both programs, a host Rotary Club must sponsor the exchange and the applicants are vetted both by the locals clubs and YEX officers from the District. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support

Interact Clubs in high schools are sponsored by, but run independently from, a local Rotary Club; their mission is the same as Mr. Turpin proposes, doing good and having fun. Another set of interviews brings Millbrook Rotarian Kim Sweck , who supervises Rotary Youth Exchange for Millbrook, and two of the students who have come from Italy and Brazil to spend a school year in the United States. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support

When Red Hook High School Student Abby Romm was 15, she decided that she wanted to spend a year abroad. She had learned of the Rotary Youth Exchange program and applied, listing Spain as her first choice, since she had already studied Spanish; but she was happy to learn she would be going to Italy, a country she had visited 8 years earlier and loved. Somewhere in the process, she told her parents, who hesitated at first but then approved and now agree with Abby that it was one of the best things she could do. Her father, Bard College Professor Dr. James Romm, briefly joins the RadioRotary interview with Ms. Ram and reports that now Abby is a citizen of the world as a result of the Youth Exchange experience. Listen to the show for her account of her exciting exchange year. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support

Loads of fun at this on-site interview with two sets of high school Rotary Youth Exchange students: Inbound students from all over the world who have spent a year in the Hudson Valley and Outbound Hudson Valley students who will be leaving to spend a year abroad. The students are endearing, charming, and at times very funny. Inbound students describe the foods they enjoyed (for example—the Thailand student’s favorite is lasagna), the difference in schooling here and at home, and what they learned from their experiences. Outbound students describe why they decided to participate in an exchange program and what they hope to learn. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support
