Rotary Hearts fundraise for childhood cancer and youth mental health issues. Rotary Hearts fundraise for childhood cancer and youth mental health issues. My guests this week are: Anne Goeres, Director Luxembourg Foundation for Children with cancer, Fondatioun Kriibskrank Kanner Vinciane Grevesse – Governor-Elect of Rotary Club's District 2160 for 2024-2025 Anastasia Vanden Berghe - President of Rotary Club Luxembourg Hearts for 2024-2025 Pol Bertems - Project Manager at Arcus asbl. Rotary Club Ambitions The vision of the Rotary Club was born in 1905 with Paul Harris, an attorney in Chicago, to bring together professionals from diverse backgrounds in order to exchange ideas and form lifelong friendships. Over time, Rotary expanded its scope to engage in humanitarian service, locally and globally. Rotary members volunteer their time and skills across various focus areas, and with a global network of 1.4 million, the leverage potential to undertake impactful projects is substantial. For instance, Rotary is a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, a public-private partnership led by national governments and consisting of six core partners: the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Rotary Clubs in Luxembourg Vinciane Grevesse has been a member of a Rotary Club since 2012 and is now Governor-Elect of Rotary Club's District 2160 for 2024-2025. Rotary District 2160, covers both Belgium and Luxembourg, comprising 68 Rotary Clubs and 5 Rotaract clubs (for young adults aged 18 to 30). Luxembourg has 14 Rotary Clubs and 1 Rotaract Club. Vinciane tells us about the Zesummen Ennerwee (travelling together) project which takes place on the last Sunday of September. The idea is to offer people with disabilities a day filled with joyful experiences of movement. From boat and horseback rides to journeys in vintage cars, tractors, and even airplanes, the day is dedicated to sharing moments across land, air and sea. English Speaking Rotary Hearts Club Anastasia Vanden Berghe is President of Rotary Club Luxembourg-Hearts 2024-2025. Luxembourg-Hearts is the only English-speaking club in Luxembourg. With the priority this year on children's well-being and mental health related to children, Rotary Hearts are working with Fondatioun Kriibskrank Kanner for their Masquerade Charity Gala, on October 19th at Hotel Le Royale. Website: https://luxembourg-hearts.rotary2160.org/en/ Event Website : https://rotary-hearts-2160.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/98062402/admin/feed/posts/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Rotaryhearts Anne GOERES, Managing Director at the Fondatioun Kriibskrank Kanner, talks about their three core missions: To help improve the physical and psychological condition of the child and their family Raise awareness of childhood cancer and defend the children's rights Support actively onco-paediatric research by funding specific projects with one main goal: cure more children and cure them better. One of Anne's significant achievements is developing FIGHT KIDS CANCER, an annual European call for projects dedicated to accelerating paediatric oncology research. In 4 years, Fight Kids Cancer funded 30 research projects for more than 18 million euros and in 11 different childhood cancer types. Childhood cancer is an umbrella term for more than 60 types of cancer that affect children and adolescents. Unlike adult cancers, which are often linked to lifestyle or environmental factors, the causes of childhood cancers are largely unknown. The most common types of childhood cancer include leukemia, brain tumours, and lymphomas. Children with cancer face unique challenges due to their developing bodies and minds. Treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery can significantly impact their growth and development. Additionally, the psychological and emotional toll on both the children and their families can be profound. The Foundation supports the daily life of families in need : every child with cancer living in Luxembourg or of which at least one parent works in Luxembourg can benefit from their services, from the very first day of diagnosis on. This includes information and help for financial and social matters, therapeutic support and also educational and recreational programmes. Fondatioun Kriibskrank Kanner is fully financed by donations. You can help by participating in the charity run Letz Go Gold at the end of September and / or join the Rotary Club Luxembourg Hearts 10th Anniversary Masquerade Gala This year, all funds raised from the gala will be dedicated to selected research programs on children's brain tumours. www.fondatioun.lu www.letzgogold.lu Rotary Hearts Club also works with Arcus, as one of their aims is to help children's mental health. Pol Bertems, Arcus Project Manager, tells us more about the association. Arcus is a non-profit organisation in social, educational, and therapeutic work, primarily focusing on children, youth and their families. The "Kannerhaiser," operated by Arcus, are Children's Reception Centres that offer care and support to children and youth from challenging family backgrounds, often needing temporary separation from their parents. These centres create a safe, nurturing environment that focuses on health, academic growth, social and family bonds, autonomy, and structured daily routines. They also support children recovering from traumatic events and involve biological parents actively to strengthen family ties and provide educational guidance. Arcus also provides specialized accommodation for children and youth with psychological and physical issues stemming from abuse or neglect, collaborating with child psychiatry experts for personalised therapies. A primary objective is to foster independence, particularly for youth aged 12 and older. The centres, spread across 18 living groups with over 136 spots, are located in various areas like Grevenmacher, Olingen, and Echternach, catering to children and teenagers aged 3 to 20 years. The Animal Assisted Pedagogy and Therapy project at Kannerhaiser allows children to be surrounded by a range of animals, including horses, donkeys, sheep, alpacas, dogs, cats, chickens, and rabbits. These animals do not judge or hold prejudices, offering a unique, unbiased interaction for the youngsters, who often face judgment and bias in human interactions. Working with animals can significantly boost children's self-confidence and trust in themselves and others. It also aids in their integration into group settings. www.fondatioun.lu www.letzgogold.lu https://www.facebook.com/Arcus.asbl https://www.instagram.com/Arcus_asbl/ https://www.Arcus.lu/ Website: https://luxembourg-hearts.rotary2160.org/en/ Event Website : https://rotary-hearts-2160.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/98062402/admin/feed/posts/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Rotaryhearts

Her insights and experiences offer a profound look into the heart of Rotary's mission and the incredible impact it has worldwide. As President Stephanie shared, the essence of Rotary's magic lies in the transformation it brings to communities.President Stephanie recounted a moving experience in the Dominican Republic, where she installed water filters in a Haitian home. She described how a young boy, amazed by the filter's ability to produce clean water, exclaimed, “Lady, show me that magic again.” This moment encapsulated the true magic of Rotary for her. It wasn't merely about the water filter; it was about the profound change that access to clean water brought to that family—enabling children to return to school and freeing women from the burden of fetching water miles away. This story beautifully illustrates Rotary's broader mission: creating lasting change. President Stephanie emphasized, “Every single Rotarian or family of Rotary member Rotaract or interactor, everybody who engages in something that creates lasting change has that same magic. We create magic because we provide opportunities for people to make their lives better.”In addition to sharing these impactful stories, President Stephanie also highlighted Rotary's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. She discussed the importance of creating Rotary experiences where everyone feels they belong. “When we create environments that are diverse and inclusive and equitable, we really are moving to creating an environment and atmosphere that does make people feel like this is where I belong,” she said.President Stephanie's dedication to fostering inclusive communities and her passion for creating positive change underscore her vision for Rotary's future. Her leadership is a testament to the organization's enduring commitment to making a difference, one community at a time.tl;dr:* Introduction and Background: Stephanie Urchick, President of Rotary International, discusses her role and the significance of Rotary's international convention in Singapore, where the theme "the magic of Rotary" was highlighted.* The Magic of Rotary: President Stephanie shares a personal story from the Dominican Republic about installing water filters. This story emphasizes the transformative impact of Rotary's work on communities, particularly in providing access to clean water and improving the lives of families.* Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: President Stephanie underscores the importance of creating inclusive environments within Rotary. She advocates for Rotary Clubs to mirror their communities to ensure everyone feels a sense of belonging and inclusiveness.* Polio Eradication Efforts: The conversation includes an update on Rotary's ongoing efforts to eradicate polio, highlighting the progress made and the dedication of frontline workers in challenging regions like Pakistan and Afghanistan.* Community Engagement and Adaptation: President Stephanie discusses the importance of adapting Rotary meetings to be more inclusive and accessible. She provides examples of clubs changing their meeting times and formats to attract a diverse membership, ensuring that more people can participate in Rotary's mission. How to Develop Motivating and Mobilizing As a SuperpowerResults anecdotePresident Stephanie's superpower is her ability to motivate and mobilize people to create meaningful change. She leverages storytelling and personal engagement to inspire others to amplify their efforts and contribute to impactful projects within their communities.President Stephanie shared an inspiring anecdote about a flight from Milan to Delhi where she met a young CEO. Initially dismissive of Rotary as an "organization for old people," he became intrigued after hearing about Rotary's professional development opportunities and mentorship. By the end of the flight, he exchanged contact information with President Stephanie and soon after joined a Rotary Club, demonstrating her knack for connecting and motivating individuals to take action.Tips for Developing the Superpower:* Share Stories: Use personal and impactful stories to illustrate the power and benefits of your cause or organization.* Highlight Value: Clearly explain what's in it for the people you are trying to motivate. Show them the personal and communal benefits of their involvement.* Adapt to Your Audience: Be flexible and tailor your approach to meet the needs and interests of different groups, whether they are young professionals or established leaders.* Promote Inclusivity: Create diverse and inclusive environments where everyone feels they belong and can contribute meaningfully.* Be Present: Engage directly with communities and individuals to understand their needs and how best to motivate them.By following President Stephanie's example and advice, you can make motivating and mobilizing people a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileStephanie Urchick (she/her):President, Rotary InternationalAbout Rotary International: Rotary unites a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world's most pressing humanitarian challenges and creating lasting change. We speak to Rotaract members from across Great Britain and Ireland, including Chair James Thomas, about their journey, what they love about Rotaract and how it helps them give back to their communities. Also in this edition, enjoy stories of Rotarians overcoming personal challenges, from rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, to conquering a stammer to speak confidently in public.
RadioRotary welcomes District 7210 Membership Chair and Past District Governor (2020-21) Highland Rotarian Tony Marmo who describes some of the many benefits of becoming a Rotarian. He personally likes the way that Rotary not only aids local community organizations but also has a global reach. With over 200 nations that have active Rotary clubs, Rotarians around the world can find partners to promote such goals as peace, literacy, clean water, maternal health, and disease prevention (notably the work toward eradicating polio). Rotary was founded in 1905 by four professionals who met weekly for lunch to plan community improvements. Today's Rotarians have expanded their reach by including meetings for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and also by working with satellite clubs, with the high school and college adjuncts (Interact and Rotaract), and with online e-clubs. I want to dedicate my time and brainpower to begin the intervention against modern society's addiction to the forever expensive and toxic golden arrow of plastic production and the throwaway lifestyle which many people lead every day. The most severe environmental problems on Earth are taking place right now. I want to mitigate the pollution of our air, water, and soil because it makes it difficult for humans and animals to thrive. Overpopulation and natural resource depletion quickly occur and cause many people and creatures to starve and die off their cultures and knowledge. As a professional in the industry, the environment should be my focus. Science, however, is intersectional. Therefore, I have a personal commitment to social justice and activism. I am committed to social justice, including LGBTQIA+ rights and marriage equality, as I am a member of this diverse community as a pansexual and polyamorous non-binary female person. I will prepare for success by using the knowledge and tools I earn with higher education to assist the Earth and all its inhabitants, human and non-human, without taking away our luxurious way of life. The Earth still holds countless secrets for alternative energies that require forward-thinking pioneers to unlock them. My goal is to learn all I can to help clean our land, air, and water and improve the quality and quantity of our Earth can support. ** Conversations with Calvin ALSO ON AUDIO: SPOTIFY http://spoti.fi/3bMYVYW GOOGLE PODCASTS http://bit.ly/38yH3yP edits by Claudine Smith- Email: casproductions01@gmail.com ** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE (You can almost find any subject you want) #animalwelfare #climatechange #ONEHEALTH #womenshealth #popculture #singersongwriter #GenZ #Nutrition CLIMATE UPDATE: IT'S N0W OR NEVER: Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its second chapter on the impact of climate change. In this episode, we welcome three E-board members of the BU Rotaract Club, a service organization aiming at serving the local communities and beyond. They shared their ongoing projects and exciting plans for the future. Email BU Rotaract (burotar@bu.edu) or follow them on Instagram (@sargentrotaract) to get involved! About BU Rotaract: Rotaract is an international, young-professional, service organization for adults, ages 18 to 30. It was founded in 1968 by Rotary International, an association of service clubs for business and professional leaders. Our mission is to provide opportunities for its members from across the University to be involved with the community of Boston through service outreach projects, partnerships with nearby organizations, and developments within the club. Annually, we have served with Brookline Rotary on Brookline Day to spread backpack safety awareness to families and children. We have also worked with EPIC Leaders, an organization that focuses on "equipping a new generation of leaders, young people with disabilities, to celebrate their civil rights by making a lasting impact on their communities," by helping to renovate and repaint local high schools. We are always open to new opportunities, service ideas, and collaborations! The moderator of the podcast is Dr. Karen Jacobs (kjacobs@bu.edu), who is the Associate Dean, Digital Learning and Innovation, a Clinical Professor and the Program Director for the on-line post-professional doctorate in the occupational therapy program at Sargent College. Marial Williams (marialw@bu.edu), a Boston University entry-level occupational therapy doctoral student, composed the music for the podcast.
