We also hear from Lola’s mom, Jennie, who did a childhood exchange herself and knows exactly what this kind of leap can set in motion for a life. The Reykjavík Grapevine's Iceland Roundup brings you the top news with a healthy dash of local views. In this episode, Grapevine publisher Jón Trausti Sigurðarson is joined by Heimildin journalist Aðalsteinn Kjartansson, and Grapevine friend and contributor Sindri Eldon to roundup the stories making headlines in recent weeks. On the docket this week are: ✨ An Italian academic, Roberto Luigi Pagani who has taught Icelandic, and how to read old Icelandic manuscripts at the University of Iceland and lived here since 2014, was refused citizenship because he hasn't passed a test in Icelandic.✨The minister of finance, Daði Mar Kristófersson, is introducing next year's budget this morning. The plan is to run a 15 billion ISK deficit next year, but the plan is to end the deficit in 2027.✨Morgunblaðið reported this morning that the 40% increase in applications of foreign students who also need a residence permit, may be linked to numerous TikTok videos, promoting the fact that it is free to attend university in Iceland, and furthermore that students can bring their families with them while attending studies in Iceland. The Grapevine has received numerous emails from students who applied to study at the University of Iceland this semester, but whose residence permit was not processed in time for them to attend. ✨On Monday last week, RÚV decided it was time to platform MP and former podcast bro, Snorri Másson, who's been maintaining in interviews that there is no freedom of speech with regards to discussing trans-rights and policies in Iceland. RÚV brought him on to debate Þorbjörg Þorvaldsdóttir, the spokesperson for Iceland's National Queer Organizations. What followed were 20 minutes of Snorri playing victim, while making no solid points in the debate and constantly interrupting Þorbjörg. The following day it was reported that the Police's special forces had kept a watch on Snorri's house that night, for security reasons, and Snorri then issued a statement that the whole thing “proved” his point that no freedom of speech existed regarding the discussion of trans issues in Iceland.Totally unrelated, RÚV premiered a new documentary series called Hate. Which is about “the rise of hate speech in Iceland and the backlash that has occurred in the struggles of various minority groups in recent years.”✨Saturday saw a protest against “genocide” take place all over Iceland; in Reykjavík, Ísafjörður, Egilsstaðir, Akureyri, Stykkishólmur, Húsavík and Hólmavík. In August, my mom welcomed a foreign exchange student from Germany into her home—and from day one, he became part of ours, too. We've shared beach days in Port O'Connor, a family vacation to Mexico, and even taught him how to drive (shoutout to Frank for being the brave teacher!). My 10-year-old son absolutely adores him, and saying goodbye is going to be so hard.Today, he joins me on the podcast before flying back home with his parents. We're talking about everything—from the cultural differences he noticed, to his favorite memories, and how this experience has shaped who he's becoming. This is a reminder that family is about so much more than blood—it's about love, shared experiences, and the people who change us for the better.WAYS TO GET INFO ABOUT HOSTING AN EXCHANGE STUDENT ~Email - Dawn.leighton@efexchangeyear.orgWebsite - efexchangeyear.org/iec/dawn-leightonTHANK YOU TO THIS WEEK'S SPONSOR ~

We recently asked you guys on the Forging Brains Facebook page if you had some questions you'd like for us to chat about on the podcast while we were planning on being at Troy Wood's shop. Just so happened that this years cultural exchange student, Ed Beeston was staying with Troy and happy to sit down with us for the recording as well. It was cool to hear what his journey has been like so far on his travels to the United States from England. Quite often we chat with guests that have previously been on the exchange in years prior but not necessarily when they're currently here on tour. So that was cool to hear from Ed about his experience so far. Also check out our website-www.forgingbrains.comOur Proud Sponsors of the Showwww.farrierbox.com use code BRAINS for 25% off your first month's order!www.well-shod.com use code BRAINS for a surprise product in your order!www.worldchampionshipblacksmiths.com use code BRAINS for 10% off in their online store! Next up on our NewWho re-watch are arguably the two best episodes of series two. First is “School Reunion” where current companion Rose gets a ‘chip' on her shoulder when she and the Doctor bump into past companion Sarah Jane. Awkward... Then we travel to the 51st century where a bickering Rose and Mickey nearly get harvested for spare parts whilst the Doctor transports back to the 18th century to get his groove back with a French courtesan. The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
Greg interviews our new friend Jannik Hiller about his experience as an exchange student in Thailand. Jannik explains that while a university student, he decided he wanted to do an exchange year in a country completely different from his native Germany, so he settled on Thailand, despite never having been here before. Greg wonders about the quality of education in Thailand versus Germany, and Jannik explains that he was willing to sacrifice some academic quality just for the experience of traveling and living in a foreign land. Jannik then recounts his first month in the country, getting ready for school to start. After an initial shock, he fell in love with exploring Bangkok and acclimated to a dorm at Chulalongkorn University for international students. He talks about interacting with students from the U.S., Mexico, Japan, and Italy, a cosmopolitan experience that led him to pursue a Master's Degree outside of Germany. Jannik then expounds on the differences in the academic experience: Thai university is more formal than in Germany, given that students have to wear uniforms and the professors are treated with more deference. Further, the courses involved more group work and presentations than his typical classes back home. Overall, Jannik's experience at a Thai university was a very positive contrast to his typical European education, and with the help of the Bangkok Podcast, he has become a true Thai-phile (like the rest of us!). Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. We also sometimes post on Facebook, you can contact us on LINE and of course, head to our website (www.bangkokpodcast.com) to find out probably more info than you need to know.

If you tuned in for our bonus episode last week, you'll know that today's episode is a bit of a change-up from our normal routine. I met Viktor Bjerre a few weeks back, while recording the bonus episode on Greenheart Exchange, and he later followed up with an expression of interest to learn more about podcasting. This led to a get-to-know phone call, and soon after an invitation by me to him to serve as Guest Host of The LoCo Experience, interviewing your regular Host, Curt Bear. The occasion is the 10th anniversary of LoCo Think Tank, the primary sponsor of the show! I've often said that my special talent is identifying special talent, and I'm proud to say I wasn't wrong about Viktor! The LoCo Think Tank story is full of twists and turns and big decisions, and Viktor did an amazing job in his very first podcast conversation - as the host! You'll get in the time machine and go back to Curt's native North Dakota, and journey through a career in banking but always full of bright ideas and community connections. So please enjoy this special episode, a very fine conversation between Guest Host Viktor Bjerre and the Founder of LoCo Think Tank and Host of The LoCo Experience, Curt Bear. Many who know me in Northern Colorado know that my wife and I have a fondness for hosting exchange students, and for the past 2 years, our outlet for getting these students has been an organization called Greenheart Exchange. I'm joined today by a Regional Manager and the Regional Director of the organization, Lisa Melville Peterson and Lasha Crowell Seaman - and they also brought along several exchange students for short get-to-know conversations. Greenheart's foundation is youth exchange, but these ladies unfold the behind-the-scenes and share their motivations and craziest experiences along the journey. The youth share openly about their motivations to sign up for international exchange, and how the experience has compared to their expectations. This is a bonus episode, because it doesn't fit the format of our typical experience episodes, and it's more of a human interest story. However, this conversation was a catalyst for a truly loco experience for one of the students. Tune in for our next episode when Viktor Bjerre, a 15-year old student from Denmark, plays the part of Guest Host on The LoCo Experience and interviews me, your host, in recognition of the 10-year anniversary of LoCo Think Tank! Please enjoy this bonus episode, all about Greenheart Exchange! The LoCo Experience Podcast is sponsored by: Logistics Co-op | https://logisticscoop.com/
