Episode 322: Nova Scotia's rugged coastline and treacherous waters have made it a graveyard for ships throughout history. The SS Atlantic, a White Star Line steamship, sank off Nova Scotia on April 1, 1873, in one of the worst maritime disasters before the Titanic. On its 19th voyage from Liverpool to New York with around 975 people on board, the ship ran short of coal and diverted to Halifax. Navigational errors caused it to strike rocks near Prospect, Nova Scotia. Rough seas hindered lifeboat launches, trapping many passengers below deck. Local fishermen and others aided in rescue efforts, but 562 people perished, marking it the greatest civilian loss in the North Atlantic at that time. This unique and groundbreaking episode picks up steam immediately as the gents pontificate on the concept of running “beyond the bib” while they each share anecdotes about how they have found a deeper meaning with the sport outside of participating in formal races. For Keith and Nick, although they both have extensive racing resumes, running serves more as a reminder of their freedom and is an outlet to explore the world. Sure, it's a platform to challenge themselves and brush off some of that competitive energy, but as they've aged, running has taken on a completely new and more powerful form. From experiencing nature, to architecture, to weather, to culture and everything in between, the lads all agree - the best way to experience the world we live in is on foot while out for a jog. Things get vulnerable when Keith shares some insight about the genesis of this wild project and discusses how his journey with grief has played a role. With loss, comes grief, and with grief, comes reflection, and with reflection comes change. For Keith, change meant getting sober and igniting a fire for pursuing the dreams that had fallen dormant in his life. His love for his home state of Michigan, fused with his ability to travel long distances on foot gave rise to the Michigan Shore to Shore Grand Adventure. Now all he needed was someone as crazy as him to come along for the ride…. this is where the one and only Nick Gapp comes in.  Bruh, Lake Michigan to Lake Huron? Is Keith a big pre Y2K guy?! Summary Databases come in a variety of formats for different use cases. The default association with the term "database" is relational engines, but non-relational engines are also used quite widely. Your host is Tobias Macey and today I'm interviewing Oren Eini about the work of designing and building a NoSQL database engine Interview Introduction How did you get involved in the area of data management? Can you describe what constitutes a NoSQL database? How have the requirements and applications of NoSQL engines changed since they first became popular ~15 years ago? What are the factors that convince teams to use a NoSQL vs. SQL database? NoSQL is a generalized term that encompasses a number of different data models. How does the underlying representation (e.g. document, K/V, graph) change that calculus? How have the evolution in data formats (e.g. N-dimensional vectors, point clouds, etc.) changed the landscape for NoSQL engines? When designing and building a database, what are the initial set of questions that need to be answered? How many "core capabilities" can you reasonably design around before they conflict with each other? How have you approached the evolution of RavenDB as you add new capabilities and mature the project? What are some of the early decisions that had to be unwound to enable new capabilities? If you were to start from scratch today, what database would you build? What are the most interesting, innovative, or unexpected ways that you have seen RavenDB/NoSQL databases used? What are the most interesting, unexpected, or challenging lessons that you have learned while working on RavenDB? When is a NoSQL database/RavenDB the wrong choice? What do you have planned for the future of RavenDB? Contact Info Blog (https://ayende.com/blog/) LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/ravendb/?originalSubdomain=il) Parting Question From your perspective, what is the biggest gap in the tooling or technology for data management today? It can feel like a circuit that completes or a light has come on and you just simply “get it.” When this occurs it moves us immediately to the positive poles of our over-leaves and our astrological wiring. Fear is not part of the experience and we may even temporarily move into what is know as the higher centers. It is a brief release from Maya or false personality. Time can seem elongated or even become meaningless. Often the magnitude of essence contact, however long or brief, afterwards can feel almost that we are in a positive way, burned clean or back on track...” "...achievement of essence contact is unique for everyone. A mother may feel essence contact during childbirth or when she holds her child for the first time. A father may feel essence contact while walking his daughter down the aisle at a wedding or with the father, daughter first dance. A fireman may feel it while rescuing someone..."

Summary Building machine learning systems and other intelligent applications are a complex undertaking. This often requires retrieving data from a warehouse engine, adding an extra barrier to every workflow. The RelationalAI engine was built as a co-processor for your data warehouse that adds a greater degree of flexibility in the representation and analysis of the underlying information, simplifying the work involved. In this episode CEO Molham Aref explains how RelationalAI is designed, the capabilities that it adds to your data clouds, and how you can start using it to build more sophisticated applications on your data. Announcements Hello and welcome to the Machine Learning Podcast, the podcast about machine learning and how to bring it from idea to delivery. Your host is Tobias Macey and today I'm interviewing Molham Aref about RelationalAI and the principles behind it for powering intelligent applications Interview Introduction How did you get involved in machine learning? Can you describe what RelationalAI is and the story behind it? On your site you call your product an "AI Co-processor". Can you explain what you mean by that phrase? What are the primary use cases that you address with the RelationalAI product? What are the types of solutions that teams might build to address those problems in the absence of something like the RelationalAI engine? Can you describe the system design of RelationalAI? How have the design and goals of the platform changed since you first started working on it? For someone who is using RelationalAI to address a business need, what does the onboarding and implementation workflow look like? What is your design philosophy for identifying the balance between automating the implementation of certain categories of application (e.g. NER) vs. providing building blocks and letting teams assemble them on their own? What are the data modeling paradigms that teams should be aware of to make the best use of the RKGS platform and Rel language? What are the aspects of customer education that you find yourself spending the most time on? What are some of the most under-utilized or misunderstood capabilities of the RelationalAI platform that you think deserve more attention? What are the most interesting, innovative, or unexpected ways that you have seen the RelationalAI product used? What are the most interesting, unexpected, or challenging lessons that you have learned while working on RelationalAI? When is RelationalAI the wrong choice? What do you have planned for the future of RelationalAI? Traffic on the freeway was mild until the rain started to get heavier. I, along with most other drivers, appropriately slowed down to accommodate the road conditions. I was fine with that until I began to see that every two exits or so, traffic would almost completely stop. The first time this happened was because of a minor accident that made everyone feel a need to slow down and stare at the incident. A few exits later, traffic slowed down to a snail's pace again because a cop had pulled someone over and apparently equally fascinating to most of the other drivers. This went on in one format or another during my entire drive home. I found myself becoming progressively irritated by the whole situation. There was either constant braking or dangerous speeding. Drivers were either overly cautious, or not cautious enough. The whole situation was excruciating. I began to wonder: why were people so stupid?...”

Examples would be bringing up a large family, unwavering dedication in marriage, or devotion to a particular career or pursuit or even a cause. Many people in military careers, nuns, priests, lifelong helpers in soup kitchen for the homeless, green peace, are some of examples. The negative pole, or when one is blindly devoted or acting from fear, is subservience, helpless, dependent, martyred, and victimized.
