We go through the history of Columbia House and other such music clubs, as well as discuss how we had to actually WAIT for packages in the mail, other mail order subscription companies, and GASP the dear love of our childhood, Scholastic Book Club days at school.

In this episode, I talk with New York Times bestselling author Eva Chen and illustrator Sophie Diao about their picture book I Am Golden, a moving ode to the immigrant experience, as well as a manifesto of self-love for Chinese American children. Eva Chen is a first-generation Chinese-American who grew up in New York City. She blames her deviation from pre-med at Johns Hopkins University on a love of fashion and beauty instilled in her by her mother, whose perfect bob and lipstick made a permanent imprint on her impressionable young mind. Previously the editor-in-chief of Lucky, Eva has also written for ELLE, Vogue, Teen Vogue, Vogue China, the New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. She is currently the head of fashion partnerships at Instagram, where she is guilty of the occasional duck-face selfie. Eva lives in New York City with her husband and two children. She is the author of Juno Valentine and the Magical Shoes, A Is for Awesome, and Juno Valentine and the Fantastic Fashion Adventure. Sophie Diao is an artist in San Francisco. As research for the book Sarah and the Big Wave, she surfed a wave that she's pretty sure was over one foot tall. She loves illustrating natural wonders and is the talent behind many a Google Doodle. Fated Mates
S03.18: Julie Garwood Interstitial: Damnit, Sara! (Not our Sarah!)

Fated Mates

This week, we tried something a little different—recording a live interstitial episode! We’re talking about Jen’s formative queen, Julie Garwood, and we dig into dialogue, alphas who are instantly gone for their heroines, heroines who tame wild animals, arranged marriages between children, and why every Garwood historical feels medieval whether or not it actually is. We recorded this episode live during a Fated States postcard-writing party to get out the vote for the January 5th runoff election in Georgia. If you’re a Georgia voter, please vote for Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock, and let’s finish what we started with the blue wave! If you’re up for it, please consider joining us for a phonebanking session on the evening of January 4th!Next week, in advance of the launch of the Bridgerton series on Netflix (coming December 25th!), we’re reading Sarah’s favorite Julia Quinn novel, The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever. Get it at Amazon, B&N, Kobo, Apple or at your local indie via bookshop.org.Show NotesFated States is gearing up to phone bank on the evening of Jan 4 from 5-7 central time. Join us if you can! In Sarah’s OSRBC facebook group, there’s a longstanding search for a book where two people are on a beach and a wave throws them together, and then “oops they’re boning.” A few folks have suggested that maybe it was Pirate by Fabio. So check it out. His co-writer (a ghost writer is when they are unnamed) is Eugenia Rielly. A teenage horror/romance that both Jen and Kelly loved was called The Ghosts of Departure Point. Probably came from the Scholastic Book Club, if we’re being honest. In case you’re wondering, the copyright page will tell you if you’re holding a first printing or first edition. Here’s a bunch of people talking about why the edges of paperbacks were dyed. RT Book Reviews and the RT conference once had Julie Garwood and Jude Deveraux on stage at the same time, and YouTube has the video! When Coronavirus is over, I highly recommend going to KissCon. Nora Roberts is our Queen and last week a poor unfortunate soul named Debra learned that the hard way. Obviously, Luke grew up on Tatooine. Hoth was that ice planet place, which is why the women in the Ice Planet Barbarians series call their new home Not-Hoth. We’d be interested in hearing your interpretation of The Bechdel Test. Jen thinks the women can still talk about men AS LONG AS they also talk about other stuff, but Sarah thought it required no discussion of men at all which is pretty tough to find in romance. FWIW, Jen mentioned it in regards to The Bride because Jamie is so isolated and largely without women friends. We like prologues and epilogues here at Fated Mates, but we understand not everyone agrees. The feud between the families in The Gift is “like the Montagues and the Capulets, but worse.” Speaking of which, Kate Clayborn’s upcoming book, Love At First, is an homage to Romeo and Juliet. This isn't exactly about the life expectancy in Scotland was in 1100, but it's close enough. Vanessa Riley’s site has a great explainer about Black people during the Regency on her site. We talked about the Carribean in the Regency when we read Gentle Rogue. It wasn't a "rip off" of Home Alone, it was just an allusion. Similarly, Nathan's whip reminded Sarah of Indiana Jones. Are these books on audio? Why yes they are and Jen listened to The Bride in between recording and release of the episode and greatly enjoyed it. Boats vs ships.Next week, we're reading The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever by Julia Quinn

Today, we're celebrating Scholastic's 100th anniversary with President, Chairman, and CEO Dick Robinson. Dick's father, Maurice R. Robinson, known affectionately to generations of staffers as Robbie, founded the company in 1920, a venture that started with a small weekly newspaper has since grown into the world's largest publisher and distributor of children's books. Generations of readers have fond memories of attending a Scholastic Book Fair on an autumn afternoon, or checking off a list of books to purchase on one of the many Scholastic Book Club order forms that arrived in classrooms. Kids have grown-up with, and obsessed over Clifford the Big Red Dog, Goosebumps, The Baby-Sitters Club, Harry Potter, and Captain Underpants. Stories by Suzanne Collins, the late Walter Dean Myers, Raina Telgemeier, Pam Muñoz Ryan, and Kelly Yang, to name a few, still captivate young readers. Scholastic News and Junior Scholastic are still staples in classrooms across the country, and Scholastic Kid Reporters are still out there getting stories that matter to them and their young readers. Last, but not least, young people still receive coveted Scholastic Art & Writing Awards each year, as they have done for nearly a century. Past recipients include Andy Warhol, Bernard Malamud, Kay WalkingStick and Mozelle Thompson. The list goes on, but we wanted to hear from Dick about his memories of his father, the early years at the company, and how he has remained true to his father's vision, that few things are more magical than children discovering themselves in the pages of a book.

Most parents (and students) have experience with “The Homework Wars” and today Greg talks about his experience, his research, and his solutions for how parents can deal with this never-ending battle. Greg Pincus is a novelist, poet, screenwriter, blogger, speaker, and social media consultant. He and his work have been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post and blogs and websites all around the globe. Listeners will love Greg’s anecdotes (especially the one about a long-ago law ruling homework illegal in California!) and the discussion of the novel’s protagonist Gregory. If you have ever cheered for an underdog or stood up for what is right, then today’s podcast will make you want to grab the book and start reading. This episode of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site features a story on Great Movie Star Screen Couples of the past. We all have our favorite screen couples from the golden age of cinema, and we look back at some of them. Who are your favorites? Maybe Bogie and Bacall, William Powell and Myrna Loy, or perhaps Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. Whoever your favorites are, we'll remember them here, and also look back at why they were so appealing in those great films we know and love. Next we look back at Scholastic Books. Do you remember when you were in school, and you could order books from the Scholastic Book Company? Once or twice a year, the students were invited to order books from a catalog and everyone waited for the big day when the teacher would have the big box of books on the desk and hand out those books that everyone waited weeks to receive. For many, this instilled a love of reading that remains to this day. We also look back at some of the popular publications for young people from back in the day such as "My Weekly Reader", and "Highlights for Children". Finally we look at some of the electric and metal toys of the 50s and 60s. We look back at the electric football and hockey games that were prevalent back then. We also look back at the Easy Bake Oven, and how little girls would bake cakes and goodies in those little ovens that inspired a whole generation of cooks and bakers. Our Retro-Commercials are for De Soto and of course, the Easy Bake Ovens. Join us on Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site!
