Altina Schinasi is known as the inventor of cat-eye glasses, but she was also an artist, a documentarian, and an activist. And she was very frank about her own faults and bad decisions. Justine Siegemund (born Justine Diettrich; 26 December 1636 – 10 November 1705) was a groundbreaking midwife whose illustrated medical book The Court Midwife (1690), was the first German medical text authored by a woman. In this episode, Sarah tells her story. Born in Silesia as the daughter of Lutheran minister, Justine married age 19 but was unable to bear children. Her own struggles with infertility and a prolapsed uterus led her to study obstetrics and become a midwife — eventually delivering almost 6,200 infants in her 42-year career and serving as court midwife to several German princely families. Her inspiring story teaches us not only to value life but also to find purpose in the obstacles we face. Lieve Monnens was born in Belgium in the 1960s. She had a musical awakening when she was eleven years old through listening to her dad's records by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys. She became interested in going to live shows, then later took internships with radio and record companies which led to several jobs in the music industry. In 1990, Lieve moved to England and began working at Factory Records in Manchester, only 2 and a half years before the label dissolved. Over thirty years later, she has been featured in the book, I Thought I Heard You Speak: Women at Factory Records by Audrey Golden, which has just been released in the U.S. She offers her thoughts on the experience of being a woman at Factory at the time, what it's like looking back, and the importance of recording our lesser-known histories. After introducing the show, co-hosts Wendy Sheridan and Robin Renée share their This Fortnight I Learned facts; Wendy learned something cool where Babylon 5 meets International Women's Day, while Robin copped out and read the day's Google Doodle fact about fancy coffee drinks. Just the Tip news includes the State of the Union address and the Katie Britt response, Greta Thunberg climate protest, the passing of Akira Toriyama, and The Oscars. A call by Rosemarie Mallet, Bishop of Croydon for the Church of England to pay hefty reparations for chattel slavery, decreasing power of anti-trans talking points, SCOTUS taking up the presidential immunity question, and more are discussed In Deep. In The Earthscape segment, Wendy leads a discussion on early spring gardening. Robin nominates Clementine Morrigan as Lefty of the Week. Things to do: Get the book! Suzette Quintanilla joins us for a special chat on Selena Quintanilla's life and powerful legacy. In October of 2017, Google launched a Google Doodle celebrating Selena Quintanilla, one of the most celebrated and beloved Mexican-American artists and entertainers in history and often named the "Queen of Tejano Music." In light of this celebration, Selena's sister and former bandmate joined us at Google San Francisco. Selena's contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third place on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and Latin songs chart. Media outlets called her the "Tejano Madonna" for her clothing choices. She also ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all time and is credited for catapulting the Tejano genre into the mainstream market. Selena has sold 18 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling female artists in Latin music. Originally published in October of 2017. Prizes include a West Virginia Waterfall Trail branded sticker, water bottle, and T-shirt – all exclusively available through this program. With the addition of these new waterfalls, the West Virginia Department of Tourism has also commissioned Base Camp Printing Company in Charleston to create a limited-edition waterfall art print that will be mailed to the dedicated waterfall explorers who check in at all 38 cascades along the trail.
If you saw the Google Doodle earlier this month of gaming trailblazer Gerald “Jerry” Lawson, then you've gotten a sample of the amazing work of this week's guest — art director and illustrator Lauren Brown.Lauren talked to me about the ins and outs of her current role at Wizards of the Coast, which includes doing art direction for the popular Magic the Gathering game series. She also spoke about growing up in New Jersey and attending undergrad there, getting her MFA at Savannah College of Art and Design, and shared how she started her career in animation and gaming from there. Lauren is also a podcaster, so we talked shop a little bit about her show Painted in Color, and she delved into what the podcast has taught her over the years. If you're interested in getting into animation, then I hope Lauren's story inspires you to follow your dreams!LinksLauren Brown's WebsiteLauren Brown on InstagramLauren Brown on TwitterPainted in ColorFor extended show notes, including a full transcript of this interview, visit revisionpath.com.==========Apply to Join The Tenth CollectiveAre you a Black designer looking for work? Matthew Cruickshank (Art Director at Google Doodles) speaks about his sketchbook-ing road-trip down historic Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles to create a … doodle! The question that drives the conversation is this - How far will a Doodler go for a Google Doodle? The answer ~2500 miles! But another answer - hundreds of pages of sketchbook drawings. Still another answer - hours under a hot sun by the side of a desolate road. Matthew speaks about the abiding role of sketchbooks in his life, drawing from real life as a way to “be grounded”, and the incredible work of Google Doodles in our lives. ----
Cody Combs gives a round-up of today's trends.
This week's #womentowatch, is Stacey Park Milbern all thanks to a #GoogleDoodle on 5/19/2022 honoring not only her legacy but what would have been her 35th birthday. Here is more on Stacey and some amazing information I learned about her: Stacey Park Milbern was a queer, Korean-American disability justice activist, who co-founded the disability justice movement and dedicated her life to advocating for marginalized communities. In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, today's Doodle—illustrated by San Francisco, CA-based guest artist, Art Twink—celebrates Stacey Park Milbern's legacy on what would be her 35th birthday. Milbern was born in 1987 in Seoul, South Korea. She grew up in Fort Bragg, North Carolina and began her service as a leader for disability justice at the age of 16. After noticing a lack of advocacy for disabled LGBTQ+ and people of color, she teamed up with other activists in 2005 to coin disability justice—a framework dedicated to ensuring the perspectives of traditionally marginalized groups within the disabled community weren't left out of the fight for disability rights. At the age of 24, Milbern moved to the Bay Area, California, where she worked tirelessly to organize, write, and speak for the movement, and became Director of Programs at the Center of Independent Living. In 2014, Milbern was appointed to the President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities and served as an advisor to the national administration. “I want to leave a legacy of disabled people knowing we are powerful and beautiful because of who we are, not despite of it." - Stacey Park Milbern From advocating for national legislation to building community through the Disability Justice Culture Club—Stacey Milbern always dreamed big and lived up to her values. Happy 35th birthday, Stacey Park Milbern. Thank you all for the help in learning and helping to further advocate for communities like and for Stacey Park Milbern- here are all the found resources, please go take a read, a watch and a listen: Google Doodle courtesy of Art Twink and more designs here: https://tinyurl.com/arttwinkig Google Doodle link for more: https://tinyurl.com/staceymilberngoogledoodle More on the article of 'In her own words: Remembering and Honoring Stacey Park Milbern' by American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) : https://tinyurl.com/andcgooglestacey Youtube video behind the Google Doodle: https://tinyurl.com/staceyMgoogledoodle

In this episode I'm talking to Composer and Sound Designer Todd Baker. When we think of music and visuals we generally think of TV and Film but audio plays a pivotal role in creating an immersive gaming experience. And as I found out in this interview, the music often serves the kind of complex narrative you would find in film. Todd likes to blur the line between music and sound design with a view to creating a more immersive gaming experience. Todd Baker's unique sound can be heard on BAFTA-nominated games such as Monument Valley 2 by Ustwo Games, Media Molecule's Dreams and Tearaway on the PS4 and Alto's Odessy from Team Alto. Todd was even commissioned by Google to provide the music for a Google Doodle for Earth Day 2020. As well as being a master of composition and sound design, Todd is also a phenomenal guitarist and co-founding member of the prog-jazz-funk-pop quartet The Lydian Collective.
