Welcome back to another episode of the Video Store Podcast! Batting first is 1988's Bull Durham, written and directed by Ron Shelton. This film is a wonderful snapshot of minor league ball in the late 80s and reminds the audience that it's not just about the game. It's about figuring out who you are and what you want out of life, regardless of your occupation. Starring Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins, it's a drama that will keep you swinging for the fences. Next up is 1989's Major League. A wealthy divorcee obtains the Cleveland Indians in the divorce but wants to relocate the team to a warmer climate. However, the escape clause only triggers if attendance drops below a certain threshold. Stacking the team with nobodies and has-beens, she hopes to move to Miami by the end of the season. When the team learns why they've been dealt the hand they've dealt, they rally to show her what they're really made of. It's a cheeky comedy that will make you stand up and cheer. In this episode I briefly discuss the bullshit that is war of any kind and I pay brief homage to Matthew Perry (R.I.P.) before reflecting on some favorite passages from Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet and Mason Currey's Daily Rituals: How Artists Work. In reflecting on what Rilke calls "the happiness of being a beginner," I announce my intention to begin writing a novel this month—and to complete 50,000 words of it—as a first-time participant in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). And in sharing some gems from Daily Rituals, I discuss some of my own sacred routines, as well as some words of wisdom on discipline and inspiration from Gustave Flaubert, Steve Reich, Samuel Beckett, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and Bernard Malamud.
Yesteryear is a magical novel based on the true story of Fran Striker, a struggling radio play scriptwriter who would eventually create The Lone Ranger. Set in Buffalo, New York during the early 1930s, Yesteryear explores the events and magical influences that led to the show's debut, a show that provided hope to Americans during The Great Depression and made The Lone Ranger and Striker heroes. To write the pilot, Striker needs to overcome writers block, a Gypsy curse, foil a plot to assassinate FDR, deal with an alcoholic midget, and recover stolen diamond rings belonging to an equally alcoholic boxing champion. Populated by characters who lived during that era—radio actor John L. Barrett, Mafioso Stefano Magaddino, former boxing champion Jimmy Slattery, and president-elect Franklin Delano Roosevelt--Yesteryear is written in the same spirit as W.P. Kinsella's Shoeless Joe, Bernard Malamud's The Natural, and Daniel Wallace's Big Fish.

Is the 2021 novel a Pulitzer-winning bravura story of the world's worst job interview? Or is it a searing indictment of ethno-nationalist Zionism–and the strange act of pretense whereby American Jewish writers and thinkers in postwar America pretended that Israel and its more extreme ethno-nationalist strains didn't concern them? Cohen dramatizes the return of that repressed by imagining the family of the Benzion Netanyahu (actual medieval Spanish historian and father of Israel's past and present Prime Minister Bibi) landing itself on a would-be assimilated American Jewish family ripped straight from the pages of a Philip Roth or Bernard Malamud novel. He was a solid, productive bat, finishing with a .285 average over his 11 year career with the Cubs, Phillies and Orioles. But that is not what he is most remembered for, if he is remembered at all. On June 14th, 1949, he is lured by an 18 year old obsessed fan named Ruth Ann Steinhagen to her hotel room, who has been quietly stalking him for three years while playing for the Cubs. She shoots the rising star in his stomach with a .22 caliber pistol. In 1923, Scholastic founder and CEO Maurice R. Robinson deemed that artistic students should be celebrated every bit as much as their athletic peers. Robinson created the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards to recognize talented young artists and writers from across the United States. The program gained fame through the students who won its awards, many of whom went onto groundbreaking careers in art, fashion, film, and literature. A century after Robinson laid out his vision, the program is still going strong. The Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, which administers the program, recently published A Thousand Familiar Faces: 100 Years of Teen Voices. The new anthology offers a look at life through young people's eyes, whether they're grappling with World War I, the Great Depression, the Vietnam War, or the September 11 attacks. The inspiration for it occurred 70 years ago this week, when Eddie Waitkus was gunned down in his hotel by an obsessive fan. We go through the life of Waitkus, the tragic shooting that changed everything, its aftermath for both victim and perpetrator, and the seminal work it inspired. Today, we're celebrating Scholastic's 100th anniversary with President, Chairman, and CEO Dick Robinson. Dick's father, Maurice R. Robinson, known affectionately to generations of staffers as Robbie, founded the company in 1920, a venture that started with a small weekly newspaper has since grown into the world's largest publisher and distributor of children's books. Generations of readers have fond memories of attending a Scholastic Book Fair on an autumn afternoon, or checking off a list of books to purchase on one of the many Scholastic Book Club order forms that arrived in classrooms. Kids have grown-up with, and obsessed over Clifford the Big Red Dog, Goosebumps, The Baby-Sitters Club, Harry Potter, and Captain Underpants. Stories by Suzanne Collins, the late Walter Dean Myers, Raina Telgemeier, Pam Muñoz Ryan, and Kelly Yang, to name a few, still captivate young readers. Scholastic News and Junior Scholastic are still staples in classrooms across the country, and Scholastic Kid Reporters are still out there getting stories that matter to them and their young readers. Last, but not least, young people still receive coveted Scholastic Art & Writing Awards each year, as they have done for nearly a century. Past recipients include Andy Warhol, Bernard Malamud, Kay WalkingStick and Mozelle Thompson. The list goes on, but we wanted to hear from Dick about his memories of his father, the early years at the company, and how he has remained true to his father's vision, that few things are more magical than children discovering themselves in the pages of a book.
When you begin to write, the words and phrases that leap into your mind will be the ones you hear most often. Go ahead and write them down. The best writers begin by just blurting it out. A willingness to write badly is the key to writing well. After winning the Pulitzer prize for fiction, James Michener said, “I have never thought of myself as a good writer. Anyone who wants reassurance of that should read one of my first drafts. But I'm one of the world's great rewriters.” Another Pulitzer prize winner, Bernard Malamud said, “The idea is to get the pencil moving quickly. Once you've got some words looking back at you, you can take two or three, throw them away and look for others.” The legendary Terry Southern tells us, “The important thing in writing is the capacity to astonish. Not shock—shock is a worn-out word—but astonish.” When you have written all that you wanted to say, look at it. When you see an overused phrase, replace it with a string of words that mean the same thing, but glow with a rainbow of color. When you notice a defeated, predictable word, replace it with one that carries a handgun. When the words staring back at you make you laugh a little, then look for a particularly arresting phrase – a phrase that carries handcuffs on its belt– and move it to the top of the stack. You'll often find your strongest opening line about one third of the way down from the top. I don't know why opening lines try to hide there, but that's usually where you'll find them. Now that you've got a strong opening line and a story full of colorful phrases, let's “Thomas Jefferson” that thing. Right after he wrote that snarky letter to King George, Thomas told us, “The most valuable of all talents is that of never using two words when one will do.” Boring people wrap a lot of words around a small idea. Fascinating people deliver big ideas quickly. Shorter hits harder. You're going to have some free time during the holidays, so write me a 600-word story. It can be about anything you want except politics. It can be true or fictional, happy or sad, tender or defiant. But it can't be boring.
