Join us on a journey into the shadowy realms of Edgar Allan Poe, the master of macabre and the grand architect of Gothic literature. Explore the tumultuous early life of Edgar Allan Poe, marked by tragedy, loss, and abandonment. Uncover how his personal demons forged the dark themes that would shape his iconic tales. In this spine-tingling podcast, we delve deep into the enigmatic life, mysterious death, and lasting legacy of the man who brought us tales of the supernatural, the eerie, and the inexplicable. My Special Guest is Leanna Renee Hieber Leanna Renee Hieber is an actress, playwright, artist and the award-winning, bestselling author of Gothic Victorian Fantasy novels for adults and teens such as the Strangely Beautiful, Eterna Files, Magic Most Foul and the bestselling Spectral City series. Her debut novel, The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker (the Strangely Beautiful series) hit Barnes & Noble's bestseller lists, won two 2010 Prism Awards (Best Fantasy, Best First Book), the 2010 Orange County Book Buyer's Best Award (Young Adult category) and other regional genre awards. The Perilous Prophecy of Guard and Goddess won the 2012 Prism Award (Best Fantasy). An enthusiastic public speaker about the history of the Gothic novel, she loves nothing more than a good ghost story and a finely tailored corset, wandering graveyards and adventuring around New York City, where she also works as a ghost tour guide for Boroughs of the Dead. The Supernatural and Mysterious Life and Death of Poe The supernatural and mysterious elements that swirled around Edgar Allan Poe in life and death add an enigmatic layer to his already haunting persona. Born into a world shadowed by parental loss and abandonment, Poe's early years foreshadowed the eerie tales he would weave. His untimely death in 1849, discovered in a delirious state on a Baltimore street, remains an unsolved riddle that has puzzled scholars and enthusiasts for generations. To this day, theories about the cause of his demise persist, from alcoholism to foul play. Poe's life and death are shrouded in mystery, mirroring the dark and mysterious worlds he crafted in his enduring literary masterpieces. His Writing Legacy Edgar Allan Poe, a literary luminary of the 19th century, was a virtuoso of versatility in his writing. With a style both macabre and melodious, he penned chilling tales of horror like "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Fall of the House of Usher," where psychological torment thrived. Yet, Poe's prowess extended far beyond the confines of the macabre, embracing genres such as mystery, satire, and poetry. His timeless poem "The Raven" showcases his mastery of melancholic verse. Poe's legacy endures in his unique ability to transfix readers with his haunting narratives and evocative poetry, forever enshrining him as an iconic figure in American literature. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Explore the life and literary legacy of Poe. 2. Explore the mystery and questions surrounding his death. 3. Join in discussions around elements of the supernatural from personal paranormal experiences to elements of the supernatural linked with Poe. I did this as part of a series of “live” podcast episodes I was invited to do at Lark and Owl Booksellers in Georgetown, Texas as part of their October programming, so you'll occasionally hear customers in the background. My special guests tonight are authors and paranormal researchers Leanna Renee Hieber and Andrea Janes here to discuss their new book called A Haunted History of Invisible Women. "Deliciously eerie.” —Leslie Rule, Bestselling Author From the notorious Lizzie Borden to the innumerable, haunted rooms of Sarah Winchester's mysterious mansion this offbeat, insightful, first-ever book of its kind from the brilliant guides behind “Boroughs of the Dead,” featured on NPR.org, The New York Times, and Jezebel, explores the history behind America's female ghosts, the stereotypes, myths, and paranormal tales that swirl around them, what their stories reveal about us—and why they haunt us . . .   Sorrowful widows, vengeful jezebels, innocent maidens, wronged lovers, former slaves, even the occasional axe-murderess—America's female ghosts differ widely in background, class, and circumstance. Yet one thing unites them: their ability to instill fascination and fear, long after their deaths. Here are the full stories behind some of the best-known among them, as well as the lesser-known—though no less powerful . . .   Tales whispered in darkness often divulge more about the teller than the subject. America's most famous female ghosts, from ‘Mrs. Spencer' who haunted Joan Rivers' New York apartment to Bridget Bishop, the first person executed during the Salem witchcraft trials, mirror each era's fears and prejudices. Yet through urban legends and campfire stories, even ghosts like the nameless hard-working women lost in the infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire —achieve a measure of power and agency in death, in ways unavailable to them as living women.   Riveting for skeptics and believers alike, with humor, curiosity, and expertise, A Haunted History of Invisible Women offers a unique lens on the significant role these ghostly legends play both within the spook-seeking corners of our minds and in the consciousness of a nation.   Afterword by Bram Stoker Award-winning author Linda D. Addison “An absolute must-buy for the spooky people of the world . . . utterly brilliant.” —Mallory O'Meara, bestselling author of The Lady from the Black Lagoon and Girly Drinks “If this book doesn't leave with you a sense of wonder and a healthy dose of goosebumps, check your pulse—you may already be among the spirits.” —Marc Hartzman, author of Chasing Ghosts: A Tour of Our Fascination with Spirits and the Supernatural Want All Paranormal Episodes? Anne Marie continues her discussion with the co-authors of A Haunted History of Invisible Women: True Stories of America's Ghosts. This non-fiction book is coauthored by actress, playwright, ghost tour guide and award-winning bestselling author Leanna Renee Hieber and Boroughs of the Dead founder Andrea Janes. “Sorrowful widows, vengeful jezebels, innocent maidens, wronged lovers, even the occasional axe-murderess—America's female ghosts differ widely in background, class, and circumstance. Yet one thing unites them: their ability to instill fascination and fear long after their deaths. Here are the full stories behind some of the best-known among them, as well as the lesser-known—though no less powerful. Tales whispered in darkness often divulge more about the teller than the subject.” Their approach to the ghost story differs from most in that they look at the history of these tales and the deeper implications of how we have traditionally framed the spooky campfire stories we love to hear and tell.Buy the book: A Haunted History of Invisible Women: True Stories of America's Ghosts, bookshop.org: https://bookshop.org/p/books/a-haunted-history-of-invisible-women-true-stories-of-america-s-ghosts-leanna-renee-hieber/17787938?ean=9780806541587Andrea Janes, website: https://boroughsofthedead.comTwitter: @MacabreNYCInstagram: @boroughsofthedeadFacebook: Boroughs of the DeadLeanna Renee Hieber, website: https://www.leannareneehieber.comBlog: http://leannareneebooks.blogspot.comTwitter: @LeannareneeInstagram: @leannareneehieberFacebook: Leanna Renee HieberAlso discussed in Part 2 Haunted Houses by Larry Kettelkamp: https://amzn.to/3Ml1PEm Amanda R. If you know Anne Marie at all, you know that Halloween is her favorite holiday. Some of you may know that, as a side gig, she is the founder of Silver Queen Walking Tours. By popular demand, she does more ghost tours than straight history tours. So when she discovered this newly released book, A Haunted History of Invisible Women: True Stories of America's Ghosts, by these two amazing women who have first-hand knowledge and experience of the art and mystery behind the ghost tour guide craft, she was sold before cracking the book open. This non-fiction book is coauthored by actress, playwright, ghost tour guide and award-winning bestselling author Leanna Renee Hieber and Boroughs of the Dead founder Andrea Janes. “Sorrowful widows, vengeful jezebels, innocent maidens, wronged lovers, even the occasional axe-murderess—America's female ghosts differ widely in background, class, and circumstance. Tonight we’re chatting with Amanda Dewees, author of the new gothic horror collection THE RATHBURN LEGACY AND OTHER STORIES. Atlanta author Amanda DeWees received her PhD in English from the University of Georgia and wrote her dissertation on 19th-century vampire literature—the perfect training, although she didn’t know it at the time, for writing Victorian gothic romance novels. Her books include With This Curse, winner of the 2015 Daphne du Maurier Award in historical mystery/suspense, and the Sybil Ingram Victorian Mysteries series. Her other passions include costuming, movies, and the elegant deployment of apostrophes.Award-winning author Amanda DeWees is known for her tales of mystery, suspense, romance, and the supernatural, often in Victorian settings. Now, for the first time, fifteen of her short stories are gathered in one collection—including all seven stories and novelettes featuring Sybil Ingram, Victorian actress, spirit medium, and sleuth. Also included are four stories never before published! Here are a few of the tales inside:—A Victorian woman photographer finds an unconventional way to save a man who is possessed by a malicious spirit (“The Rathburn Legacy”).—While pursuing her hobby of taking gravestone rubbings, a gentle spinster encounters the uncanny (“The Woman Who Loved Dogs”).—On the night of a mysterious butterfly phenomenon, a high school senior tries to rescue a little girl and make big choices about the future (“On Shadowed Wings”).—A medium who senses emotion through fabric seeks the cause of two poisonings that prevented a wedding (“The Deadly Dress”).—Sybil Ingram and her husband, Roderick Brooke, solve mysteries involving a haunted violin, a gang of women criminals, a pair of children who may be possessed by malicious spirits, and more. With an introduction by horror/suspense author Charles R. Rutledge, this collection also features author notes on all the stories. From the charming to the chilling, the tales included here are all unique and unforgettable.“An enjoyable blend of Austen, Dickens and Mrs. Gaskell – Gothic with a light touch, packed with family curses, mysterious paintings and romantic chills, plus more adventures of the indefatigable psychic, Sybil Ingram.” John Linwood Grant, author of The Assassin’s Coin“A delightful, oft eerie, romantic, and decidedly splendid set of stories which pay homage to many classic Gothic traditions...offering fresh perspectives and heroines to wholeheartedly cheer for.” – Leanna Renee Hieber, award-winning and bestselling author of the Strangely Beautiful and Spectral City series“I love this collection of stories. Amanda DeWees sends shivers down your spine, tugs your heartstrings, and creates heroes to die for. She will keep you guessing who done it while turning pages late into the night.” —Raven Hart, author of The Vampire’s Seduction“While you will find a great deal of wit, charm, and romance [here]…Amanda DeWees knows her way around a horror yarn and she has a few surprises waiting for you.” —Charles R. Leanna Renee Hieber - author of "The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker", "Darker Still: A Novel of Magic Most Foul", contributor to Ellen Datlow's "Queen Victoria's Book of Spells: An Anthology of Gaslamp Fantasy" anthology, and more - has fiercely and passionately pursued her own path in the world. While that path led her through the realm of live theater (she's a member of the Screen Actor's Guild) and other artistic/creative domains, it was the combination of the luxurious complexity of the Victorian Era and the evocative mythologies of speculative fiction that have become the primary colors of her artistic palette. The depth and diversity of Leanna's experience informs every moment of this marvelous 20(ish) minutes of conversation as she discusses cohesion and "connective tissue" between characters, the power of having fun and getting stuff on the page, the audience (tangible and less so) for whom we write, and more!
