My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Dani Pettrey, author of the book One Wrong Move. Dani has sold nearly 800,000 copies of her novels to readers eagerly awaiting the next release. Dani combines the page-turning adrenaline of a thriller with the chemistry and happy-ever-after of a romance. Her novels stand out for their "wicked pace, snappy dialogue, and likable characters" (Publishers Weekly), "gripping storyline[s]," (RT Book Reviews), and "sizzling undercurrent of romance" (USA Today). Her Alaskan Courage, Chesapeake Valor, and Coastal Guardian series have received praise from readers and critics alike. She's been honored with multiple awards, including the Daphne du Maurier Award, two HOLT Medallions, a two-time Christy Award finalist, two National Readers' Choice Awards, the Gail Wilson Award of Excellence, and Christian Retailing's Best Award. From her early years eagerly reading Nancy Drew mysteries, to paging through Agatha Christie novels or watching on-the-edge-of-her-seat adventure movies, Dani has always enjoyed mystery and suspense. She considers herself blessed to be able to write the kind of stories she loves--full of plot twists and peril, love, and longing for hope and redemption. Her greatest joy as an author is sharing the stories God lays on her heart. She researches murder and mayhem from her home in Maryland, where she lives with her husband. In my book review, I stated that One Wrong Move is a Christian Mystery and Suspense with a great side of romance. Andi is ex-FBI because of what the higher-ups called a botched job. She now works as an investigator for an insurance company. After a gallery heist, she meets Christian, a security expert and private investigator who installed the gallery's security system. Immediately, the two find themselves in the middle of some strange game with the thief or thieves who leave riddles for them to find. Unfortunately, the object of the "game" seems to include the demise of both Christian and Andi. As they dodge one attempt on their life after another, Andi and Christian have to face their feelings for one another as well as the mistakes in their pasts. Will Andi be vindicated? Can Christian convince Andi that he is on the up and up? Or will those intent on killing them win before they know? Kellie Coates Gilbert, Author talks about WHERE WE BELONG, her new Teton Mountain series, and more with Pamela Fagan Hutchins on Crime and Wine. About Where We Belong: A powerful story of healing, new beginnings, and friendships that last a lifetime… Charlie Grace Rivers, a gutsy divorced mother, works hard at juggling life in the small town of Thunder Mountain, Wyoming, even when her cantankerous and ailing father balks at every decision she makes regarding Teton Trails Guest Ranch. Worse, he hires her philandering ex-husband. At her wit's end, she runs to her lifetime girlfriends for solace and counsel, but none of their advice compares to the wisdom of a new guy in town who is staying at Teton Trails…a good-looking producer from a popular television show being filmed in the wilds of Wyoming, a man who might be the key to the happiness she's long been missing. Charlie Grace bravely chooses to open her heart until her newfound happiness is put to the test, and she learns that her new relationship could put her at odds with much of the town—including her best friends—who worry Nick Thatcher's television show will draw unwanted attention to their secluded mountain paradise. Is the promise of love worth the upheaval it may bring, or is it merely a fleeting dream destined to vanish with Nick's inevitable departure? Join Charlie Grace on her heartwarming journey of courage, friendship, and the relentless pursuit of happiness in a tale that will resonate with every woman who has ever dared to follow her heart. Chantel of Chantel Reads All Day and Hey Reader runs an annual "Read Your Bookshelf Challenge." Simply put, she challenges you to read the unread (lonely, miserable, aching to come alive in your brain) books on your bookshelf. To do so, she gives you twelve prompts, one for each month, and basically says, "Have at it!" Okay, there are prizes, too, but... really, it's about reading those books. Well, this year I did it and had a BLAST. But more than helping me read the books I already owned, one particular prompt helped me find a new author and fabulous book. Listen in to see why you need to read The Space Between Words by Michele Phoenix (or reread it if you already knew the brilliance of this book! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. How a Reading Challenge Helped Me Discover a Great Book Like I said in the episode, there are lots of reasons to join reading challenges or read-a-thons. Aside from the sheer fun of it, the comaraderie of the community of folks going, "Hey, that's a cool one! I chose xyz for "cozy or nostalgic," but now I need to read that, too" is a huge one. Okay, so maybe it's a TBR builder as well as reducer, but seriously! Two of my favorite reads this year I found because of Chantel's challenges/read-a-thons. The first was Emily of Deep Valley (to fulfill the Maud Hart Lovelace prompt with the You've Got Mail Read-a-Thon). Seriously, I LOVED that book and want to read more by her now (I previously didn't like the books of hers I'd read). And then there was The Space Between Words. I bought the book because I needed a white book. Seriously. That's why. Because "a mostly white cover" was the prompt, and I didn't have a book that was a mostly white cover. That's the reason. I am ready to gush all over again, but first... Challenges. I meant it when I said that challenges are great for helping you find new books and authors, but they're also wonderful for getting you out of reading slumps! And, for people like me, they're also great for helping me reduce the number of books in my home so I have room for more! EEEP! A few reading challenges for you for 2023 The first two I think I'll be doing, but there are many more! Scout around and see if one tickles your fancy! The ones I've listed are either ones I've personally considered OR are ones mentioned by BookTubers that I follow and watch. Read Your Bookshelf Challenge Angie Henderson BooksandLala Oceana GottaReadEmAll (This one is a Christian Romance challenge) And don't forget Avid Readers of Christian Fiction and many other Facebook Groups that have their own. And if you're new to BookTube, here are a few of my favorite channels! These are the ones I watch pretty much every video. And Read Another Chapter Chantel Reads All Day Mitzi Reads and Writes Miriam Elizabeth Reads BooksAndJams Grace Filled Reads Do leave a comment and let me know if I'm missing out on any great BookTubers! But the gush... You know I love a good book rich in story and faith. Well, The Space Between Words definitely has that. This book had a twist I should have seen coming, but it is so well-written and engrossing that I missed it and got blown out of the water. Fitting considering the plot. One of the best parts about this book is how it doesn't pretend that being a Christian and standing firm in your faith is easy. We weren't promised easy. Despite the easy yoke and light burden Jesus offers, this world is full of death, sorrow, sin, and decay. And it's hard. It hurts. The Space Between Words shows that pain for the ugliness that causes it and the beauty that God brings from it. If any book can beat out The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip as my most-recommended book of the year, this will be the one. The Space Between Words by Michele Phoenix Award-winning author, Michèle Phoenix, weaves an unforgettable tale of hope and survival in The Space Between Words. “Several scenes in The Space Between Words will leave readers without words, the ability of speech replaced by the need to absorb all the feels.” —RT Book Reviews, 4½ stars, TOP PICK! “There were seconds, when I woke, when the world felt unshrouded. Then memory returned.” When Jessica regains consciousness in a French hospital on the day after the Paris attacks, all she can think of is fleeing the site of the horror she survived. But Patrick, the steadfast friend who hasn't left her side, urges her to reconsider her decision. Worn down by his loving insistence, she agrees to follow through with the trip they'd planned before the tragedy. “The pages found you,” Patrick whispered. “Now you need to figure out what they're trying to say.” During a stop at a country flea market, Jessica finds a faded document concealed in an antique. As new friends help her to translate the archaic French, they uncover the story of Adeline Baillard, a young woman who lived centuries before—her faith condemned, her life endangered, her community decimated by the Huguenot persecution. “I write for our descendants, for those who will not understand the cost of our survival.” Determined to learn the Baillard family's fate, Jessica retraces their flight from France to England, spurred on by a need she doesn't understand. Could this stranger who lived three hundred years before hold the key to Jessica's survival? “An unforgettable portrait of courage and reclaimed hope.” —Kristy Cambron, award-winning author of the Lost Castle series. We are pleased to bring you, for the first time on the show, bestselling author Irene Hannon, as she talks her latest book "Point of Danger." Irene Hannon is a bestselling, award-winning author who took the publishing world by storm at the tender age of 10 with a sparkling piece of fiction that received national attention. Okay…maybe that's a slight exaggeration. But she was one of the honorees in a complete-the-story contest conducted by a national children's magazine. And she likes to think of that as her “official” fiction-writing debut! Since then, she has written more than 50 romantic suspense and contemporary romance/women's fiction novels. "Point of Danger": Radio talk show host Eve Reilly is used to backlash from her pot-stirring on-air commentary and interviews, but now it seems a disgruntled listener is resorting to more than angry words to express their displeasure. When a suspicious package arrives on her doorstep, Eve turns to law enforcement for help. Police detective Brent Lange can't find any evidence to link the string of unsettling incidents that follows, but he's convinced they're connected. As the harassment grows more menacing, it becomes clear someone wants Eve's voice silenced--permanently. But unless he can track down her foe, fast, the gutsy woman who is willing to take risks for what she believes--and who is swiftly winning his heart--may not survive.

Author Joy Callaway Historical Fiction With “The Fifth Avenue Artists Society” and “Secret Sisters” on Charlotte Readers Podcast In today’s episode, we meet novelist Joy Callaway, author of “Secret Sisters” and “The Fifth Avenue Artists Society,” both published by Harper. The New York Daily News described “The Fifth Avenue Artists Society” as “the creative sisterhood of Little Women, the social scandal of Edith Wharton and the courtship mishaps of Jane Austen. . . . a delightful, and at times touching, tale of Gilded Age society and creative ambition with an inspiring heroine.” RT Book Reviews calls “Secret Sisters” a “compulsive, feminist read…a rich drama showcasing the disparity between men and women, rich and poor, on a 19th century college campus.” Joy starts the show with a reading from her most recent novel, “Secret Sisters,” where two of the main characters are plotting the idea of forming a women’s fraternity at their co-ed college in 1881, a time when such ideas are foreign to such male-dominated institutions of the day. This week, we tried something a little different—recording a live interstitial episode! We’re talking about Jen’s formative queen, Julie Garwood, and we dig into dialogue, alphas who are instantly gone for their heroines, heroines who tame wild animals, arranged marriages between children, and why every Garwood historical feels medieval whether or not it actually is. We recorded this episode live during a Fated States postcard-writing party to get out the vote for the January 5th runoff election in Georgia. If you’re a Georgia voter, please vote for Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock, and let’s finish what we started with the blue wave! If you’re up for it, please consider joining us for a phonebanking session on the evening of January 4th!Next week, in advance of the launch of the Bridgerton series on Netflix (coming December 25th!), we’re reading Sarah’s favorite Julia Quinn novel, The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever. Get it at Amazon, B&N, Kobo, Apple or at your local indie via bookshop.org.Show NotesFated States is gearing up to phone bank on the evening of Jan 4 from 5-7 central time. Join us if you can! In Sarah’s OSRBC facebook group, there’s a longstanding search for a book where two people are on a beach and a wave throws them together, and then “oops they’re boning.” A few folks have suggested that maybe it was Pirate by Fabio. So check it out. His co-writer (a ghost writer is when they are unnamed) is Eugenia Rielly. A teenage horror/romance that both Jen and Kelly loved was called The Ghosts of Departure Point. Probably came from the Scholastic Book Club, if we’re being honest. In case you’re wondering, the copyright page will tell you if you’re holding a first printing or first edition. Here’s a bunch of people talking about why the edges of paperbacks were dyed. RT Book Reviews and the RT conference once had Julie Garwood and Jude Deveraux on stage at the same time, and YouTube has the video! When Coronavirus is over, I highly recommend going to KissCon. Nora Roberts is our Queen and last week a poor unfortunate soul named Debra learned that the hard way. Obviously, Luke grew up on Tatooine. Hoth was that ice planet place, which is why the women in the Ice Planet Barbarians series call their new home Not-Hoth. We’d be interested in hearing your interpretation of The Bechdel Test. Jen thinks the women can still talk about men AS LONG AS they also talk about other stuff, but Sarah thought it required no discussion of men at all which is pretty tough to find in romance. FWIW, Jen mentioned it in regards to The Bride because Jamie is so isolated and largely without women friends. We like prologues and epilogues here at Fated Mates, but we understand not everyone agrees. The feud between the families in The Gift is “like the Montagues and the Capulets, but worse.” Speaking of which, Kate Clayborn’s upcoming book, Love At First, is an homage to Romeo and Juliet. This isn't exactly about the life expectancy in Scotland was in 1100, but it's close enough. Vanessa Riley’s site has a great explainer about Black people during the Regency on her site. We talked about the Carribean in the Regency when we read Gentle Rogue. It wasn't a "rip off" of Home Alone, it was just an allusion. Similarly, Nathan's whip reminded Sarah of Indiana Jones. Are these books on audio? Why yes they are and Jen listened to The Bride in between recording and release of the episode and greatly enjoyed it. Boats vs ships.Next week, we're reading The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever by Julia Quinn

It’s not often we get an excuse to include discussion of the theremin here on the Rocky Mountain Writer, so we had to jump at the chance when Laurence MacNaughton mentioned he’s been fiddling around with the strange musical device. However, we would have Laurence on for any reason but in addition to the theremin, his new book No Sleep ‘Til Doomsday launches this month—the third in his fantasy series following It Happened One Doomsday and A Kiss Before Doomsday. Laurence grew up in a creaky old colonial house in Connecticut that just might’ve been haunted. As a kid, he was a choirboy in a church built in 1754. He also pounded out stories on a shiny black Remington typewriter until he sold his first magazine article at age 19. Since then he’s written numerous novels, novellas, and short stories and his work has been praised by Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, RT Book Reviews, Library Journal, and Booklist. When he’s not writing, Laurence hikes and bikes in the Colorado Rockies, explores ghost towns, wrenches on classic cars, and, yes, plays the theremin. Stay tuned after the Q & A for a sample of Laurence reading from No Sleep ‘Til Doomsday. Laurence MacNaughton's website Outro music by Kelly Sweet, "In The Air Tonight." Dan was born in Philadelphia in 1957 to a mostly blue-collar, hard-working Irish family. His father was the first person on either side of the family to earn a college degree. It took him 9 years, working during the day, going to college at night, using the GI Bill. In the mid-60s, GE hired his dad as an engineer for the Apollo space program. Dan’s family packed up and moved to Florida, which is where Dan spent most of his childhood. During a personal retreat in 1977, Dan experienced a call to pastoral ministry. He began studying and preparing for the next several years. In 1985, he was ordained as a pastor and served in the same church for the next 25 years. In August 2010, after 3 of his novels were published by a major publishing house (Revell – Baker Publishing Group), Dan retired from ministry to write fulltime. Dan’s novels have received popular and critical acclaim, getting rave reviews from USA Today and magazines like Publisher’s Weekly, Library Journal and RT Book Reviews. His very first, The Unfinished Gift, won 2 ACFW Carol Awards. It’s still in print 9 years later and has sold over 70,000 copies. It’s available in hardback, paperback, Ebook, audiobook, large-print and in several languages. His other books have won numerous awards and appeared on several national bestseller lists. In addition to his writing, Dan also enjoys public speaking and is frequently invited to speak at writer’s conferences, either as a keynote speaker or teaching workshops and seminars on a variety of writing topics. He has also begun to take on a limited number of clients for fiction coaching. Visit Dans Website to find out more about him.
