Baking in an Easy-Bake Oven is a satisfying and rewarding experience. You know what we're talking about if you had one as a child. If you didn't, it's never too late. Pretending to be an adult is fun when you're a kid (also, the only time it is exciting). And the Easy-Bake Oven provides the ideal recipe for playing a fairly accurate game of pretend. The early models of Easy-Bake Ovens utilized the excess heat from incandescent bulbs to heat the oven — talk about innovation. Michelle Hernández is the pastry chef and owner of Le Dix-Sept, the San Francisco pâtisserie known for confections featuring botanicals such as flowers, teas, cacao, and honey. As a child, Michelle loved to use her Easy-Bake Oven and was obsessed with PBS cooking shows like Great Chefs and Yan Can Cook. She wanted to go to culinary school, but headed to Berkeley for college instead. She worked at Evite and The Gap before finally attending Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and opening her own shop. Today, Michelle is especially known for her canelés, the small, bell-shaped pastries that are caramelized on the outside and creamy on the inside. In this episode, Michelle and host Jessie Sheehan talk all things canelés, from using copper molds to why the dark French bake is a must, resting and straining the batter, and why she'll only sell the treats on the same day they were made. My guest today Jennifer Keltner has been a maker of things from a very early age. Her first truly independent crafting involved melting crayons in an Easy-Bake Oven. She's passionate about all things fabric, quilting, embroidering, and sewing—always trying to squeeze a little “making” into every day. As President and Chief Visionary Officer for Martingale, Jennifer leads an employee-owned company with 45 years of book publishing history, now producing 36+ new titles per year.
The boys are recording together in Dublin as Kevin was over for an event that they were both asked to DJ at. As part of the set they did Rock The Boat and the lads reckon it was one of the hardest ab workouts they've done in ages. Also in the catchup, Kevin recounts a suspected crime he witnessed on the tube. The theme for the week is comfort food and they start off by ripping the food pyramid to shreds and deduce that it's not nutritionally sound and that it was all an inside job to get us to consume more dairy. PJ tells us how he was seduced by Jose's skills in the kitchen and Kevin shares that he's lucky to be alive having eaten the radioactive cupcakes from his sister's Easy-Bake Oven growing up. They then read out people's perfect hangover cures and rip the piss out of a girl who loves dried mango and dark chocolate because that's just notions.Sign up to the I'm Grand Mam Patreon for more stunning content: https://www.patreon.com/imgrandmam ✨ Hosted on Acast.
