It Watches in the Dark by Jeff Strand brings us the most likely successor to the Goosebumps throne. And hopefully the treasure room that I assume goes along with it. I’m pulling for you, Jeffy. Or Strandy. Whatever you prefer.
About Jeff Strand Jeff Strand's bio was funnier when he talked about losing the Bram Stoker Award four times, but he's now a Bram Stoker Award WINNER! His novels are usually classified as horror, but they're really all over the place, almost always with a great big dose of humor. He's written five young adult novels that all fall into the "really goofy comedy" category. Several of his books are in development as motion pictures, and he's mostly not allowed to blab any details, which he finds MADDENING. He currently lives in sunny, warm Duluth, Minnesota. Jeff provides an insightful update on key bills, including the successful passage of the TCA cleanup bill, the impactful Right to Repair legislation for wheelchair maintenance, and the groundbreaking Medicaid buy-in program for working adults with disabilities. They also discuss the ongoing efforts and challenges in implementing paid family caregiving and the evolving landscape of special education policies. Jeff Strand Coordinator of Government and External Affairs from the Tennessee Disability Coalition will discuss the Priority Bills for Part 2/2 of the 113th Tennessee General Assembly. Here is a link to what we discussed last year (2023) on Episode 78 TDC Priority Bills for 2024 1) TennCare for Working Adults, where persons with disabilities can potentially buy into TennCare services (like HCBS) by paying a premium. Eligibility to participate in this program will exclude present income and asset thresholds, making Tennessee the 47th State that could allow for this provision. 2) Paid Family Caregiving Resolution. As Jeff explains, this resolution would urge TennCare to work with community stakeholders to develop a comprehensive statewide paid family caregiving policy and program. If TennCare is unable to provide a solution in 2024, then TDC could write a Bill and bring this before lawmakers in 2025. 3) Right to Repair, Part 2. This Bill will require payors to pay for wheelchair maintenance and make provisions for "less complex" repairs, like flat tires, to be made by independent repair persons. 4) HB 2497/SB2146 will exempt two organizations from building dormitory-style, congregate living spaces within the State and bypass the State's anti-institutionalization laws, which prohibit the residence of more than four unrelated persons with disabilities in a group home or less than 500 yards from another group home. Wins: The Tennessee Drivers Placard language was cleaned up to modernize the language of the law. Overview This is a super special episode. Jeff Strand is back to talk about his novelization for the movie Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. This cult comedy horror movie is over 40 years old, and Jeff does an absolutely fantastic job with the writing. You may notice something else of interest - there are 3 people on this episode. That's because this is a big crossover with the Horror Lasagna podcast and that other person is my co-host, Rhys. Book https://www.amazon.com/Attack-Killer-Tomatoes-Jeff-Strand/dp/1959205676?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1684786568&sr=8-4&linkCode=li2&tag=discoveredwordsmiths-20&linkId=5138d8901de0de032118d60c379cd842&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_il YouTube https://youtu.be/bbWHojO8AFE Transcript Stephen: So this is a special episode. It's not even one of our bonus episodes, Reese. This is just a special episode. It'll take the place, the highest place of honor amongst all our episodes. So it's a crossover event. It is. We're going to do this with Discovered Wordsmith also. So Jeff you get to be on my other podcast twice. You're one of the lucky handful. Before we get rolling, everybody knows. Me and Reese, all four people in Ram Motion that listen to us. Hello. So first of all, we've got a guest Jeff Strand. So Jeff tell everybody a little bit about who you are and then we can start making fun of you. Jeff: I'm a writer. I have written a little over 50 books. My most recent one was demonic. Tomatoes, the novelization, which I assume will come up at some point during this discussion. Stephen: Oh, we probably should have Jeff: some young adult comedy pretty much all over the place, but mostly horror comedies where I'm at. Stephen: And I know I've mentioned you to Reese and others a couple times that I just fell in love with your books. And I texted you the other day, I said, oh my God, I'm reading the attack of the Killer Tomatoes and it's your best one. I am l out loud laughing and I'm reading it to my son, just bits and pieces and he's laughing, just listening to the little bits I put. We wanna talk a little bit about the movie and the novelization a bit My first question, Reese. Oh, you had a couple questions. Background. I did Rhys: actually Jeff, this is the first time I've met you. And aside from a friend of ours who we know who left a long time ago to go live in Alaska, Alaska is one of the three places that I've told my children I should never go because I probably never come home from. So I'm gonna ask you to disuse me of my romantic notions of what Alaska's so what was it like growing up in the great white North? Jeff: I didn't know any different, so I, I was born in Baltimore, but I grew up in Alaska from six months old till 15. So I, didn't know any different. So the fact that it is light, 24 7 during the summer. It was not weird to me. That's just the way it is. The fact that it gets, I would get on the bus to go to school and be pitch black and then by the time I got on the bus to come home for school, pitch black. There are a little bit of daylight in the middle, so the long nights during the winter, the long. Days during the summer, that was just the way things were. So people would visit in the summer and like, how can you sleep? It's, four in the morning and it is bright out and, but that, none of that stuff was weird to me. What was, what I realized was the most weird and didn't impact me at all growing up was in Fairbanks. You were in Fairbanks. Like right now I'm in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I, think nothing of, I'll drive to Nashville tomorrow, I'm gonna go to Atlanta. Knoxville, the whole, continental United States is at my disposal without it being that big of a trip. Whereas in Fairbanks, Fairbanks was the only place I was unless we took a vacationed anchorage, which was like six or eight hours. So there were tiny little towns that were basically a, gas station and maybe a restaurant. But for the most part, I,

Welcome to the show all of my wonderful listeners. For those of you keeping track, this is episode 83 of the show. You could be anywhere, but you are here with me and I appreciate it. Thank you all for tuning in on this fine day.Today we are going to talk a little bit about what happens when you get the chance to meet your heroes. No, I don't mean like Superman, Spiderman, Bat Girl, and my personal favorite, the nice lady that makes my coffee at the stand at work. And yes, she is a superhero in my book.I am talking about the heroes in the writing world that you admire not because they have amazing abilities. Well, okay maybe they do. Amazing abilities to write that is. Who are mine? Well, before we get to that, take a listen and I will tell you about an amazing book by Darin Kennedy called The Mussorgsky Riddle. Check it out. It is amazing and you will love it just as much as I did. But, back to my heroes. I will point back to people like Ronald Malfi, Jeff Strand, and Josh Malerman. Not because of numbers of sales, but there ability to tell a tale. That is what truly matters to me. These guys are impressive because of how they weave a tale and bring you into the story.Still not convinced? Well, take a listen. I am sure you will agree that if you have the chance you should meet your heroes; more importantly you should learn from them!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/Bryanthewriter)

I chat with Carol Westlake and Jeff Strand of the Tennessee Disability Coalition. TDC is a group of 40+ organizations that come together to support the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of life. The 4 domains that make up TDC are public policy, brain links, family voices, and small grants. Bio of Carol Westlake: "I am the founding director of the Tennessee Disability Coalition, a position I have held for 32 years. My background and training are in special education, disability and public policy. I have helped start a number of not-for-profit advocacy organizations and enjoy serving the community through volunteer work. I hope that listeners learn that disability is a natural part of the human experience. My call to action is to inclusion - to make sure that everything we do is accessible, inclusive, and supportive of people with disabilities." Bio of Jeff Strand: Jeff is the Coordinator of Government and External Affairs at the Tennessee Disability Coalition. In that role, he is responsible for monitoring state policy, developing content related to TDC policy efforts and working with advocates and self-advocates to support their policy and advocacy work. He lives in East Nashville with his wife, recently turned-one-year-old daughter, and dog, where they enjoy going for walks, cooking and gardening." I want listeners to develop and feel a sense of power as an advocate for their given and chosen communities. I hope they can walk away with some tangible steps they can take toward envisioning and moving toward the type of world they want to live in."
