https://www.youtube.com/user/WrightStateU The Wright State men’s basketball team recently traveled to Italy, visiting popular tourist destinations along with playing multiple exhibition games. The Raiders visited Lake Como, Vicenza, Verona, Florence, Pisa and Rome. The Sistine Chapel, The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Statue of David and The Duomo Cathedral of Florence were just a few of their stops. “It was the biggest building that I’ve ever seen in my life,” junior Loudon Love, said of The Duomo of Florence. “It was unbelievable.” The Raiders squeezed in several games during their 10-day trip, picking up wins against Senna Basket, Vicenza Locali and Caffee Ginko with an average margin of 34 points. “As a coaching staff we thought that it would be a good trip to be able to play some good basketball but also to learn some things as well,” said Scott Nagy, men’s basketball head coach. “I’m so glad that I got to come to Wright State,” said Tanner Holden, a freshman guard. “That trip was definitely once in a lifetime.” The 2019-20 men’s basketball season tips off on Nov. 5 against Central State. https://www.youtube.com/user/WrightStateU The Wright State men's basketball team traveled to the Dominican Republic in early August to put shoes on the feet of children in need. The mission trip was privately funded with the help of Samaritan's Feet, a global humanitarian organization that provides shoes for children around the world. The team arrived on Aug. 4 and visited various towns and villages over a five-day period. “I feel really blessed to take a trip like this,” said Alan Vest, a senior guard on the basketball team. “I have been humbled and I realize what I have. I will not take it for granted.” Home base for the team was in the capital city of Santo Domingo. The team traveled to areas outside of town to visit churches and centers in order to wash feet, hand out candy and distribute almost 900 pairs of shoes. When each shoe distribution concluded, players and coaches played basketball, baseball, soccer, tag, duck-duck-goose and other games with the children. “They were grateful for us to be there and play with them and interact,” said Bill Wampler, a junior forward on the team. “I think we appreciated their time even more.” The team's excursions included places like Orphanage Vanessa Taveras, Villa Consuelo Sto Dgo Oeste, Batey Boca de Soco San Pedro and Batey Santa Fe. “It was a good trip for the players,” said head basketball coach Scott Nagy. “Our players learned from it and I think they will remember the trip for the rest of their lives.” More athttps://webapp2.wright.edu/web1/newsroom/2018/08/22/life-changing/

https://www.youtube.com/user/WrightStateU Bill Wampler, a junior forward on the Wright State University men's basketball team, helped lead the USA Athletes In Action basketball team to a gold medal in the FISU America Games in São Paulo, Brazil, on July 28, with a 78-69 win over Argentina. The International University Sports Federation is the governing body that supports the America Games, a 13-sport, collegiate-level tournament featuring 20 to 25 nations from North and South America. Athletes in Action, a Christian-based organization, was delegated by US-IUSF to select the squad to represent the United States. “It’s just awesome to see that the coaches had that much respect for me to suggest that I go on this trip,” said Wampler. During the trip, the USA team partnered with Samaritian’s Feet and distributed new shoes to people in need. The players and coaches also visited a juvenile detention center in the area. “It was something that was life-changing for me because I probably gave out 70 to 80 hugs to kids that probably don’t get hugs very often,” said Wampler. Wright State men’s basketball coach Scott Nagy knew this experience would be impactful on his player. “Anything that can be good for Bill and help him grow as a man is going to be good for our basketball team,” said Nagy. When players on the Wright State men’s basketball team laced up their sneakers to play the visiting Titans from Detroit on Jan. 26, their coach Scott Nagy arrived shoeless. By coaching a game barefoot, Nagy tries to raise awareness for Samaritan’s Feet, a global humanitarian organization that provides shoes for children around the world. This was the 10th year that Nagy coached a game barefoot. “I’m so thankful for Samaritan’s Feet. They see it that we’re helping them out. The way I look at it they’re helping us out by providing opportunities for our players to do stuff like this,” said Nagy. On Jan. 27, basketball players and coaching staff traveled to the Life Enrichment Center in East Dayton to wash people’s feet and pass out 200 new athletic sneakers to those in need. The intimate encounter allows the players on the team to exchange stories and experiences with the recipients. “It’s definitely life changing,” said Jaylon Hall, a freshman basketball player. Samaritan’s Feet was founded in 2003 and has served over 6.7 million people around the world.

By coaching a game without shoes, Nagy raised awareness for Samaritan’s Feet, a global humanitarian organization that provides shoes for children all over the world. This was the ninth year that Nagy coached a game barefoot. “There are so many third world countries where children are running around with no shoes,” he said. To help Haiti, his adopted daughter Naika’s home country, Nagy thought Samaritan’s Feet would be a perfect fit. The Wright State basketball team will travel to Haiti in August to deliver food and shoes to children in need. “There will be kids that this will be the first time that they’ve had a pair of shoes put on their feet,” said Nagy. The basketball coach hopes to inspire his players. “What we’re trying to do is help our guys become servant leaders, and I think this a really good way to get them started in it,” he said.
