Episode 42: Recorded February 7, 2024 "[Tommy] felt strongly that the lure coursing world had given him a mission, and he felt strongly that he needed to give back..." Trina Bianchi, on her late husband, Tommy, and the "joy" which put into Injoy Lure Coursing products Show Notes The Injoy Lure Coursing story is one that started in the 1970s. Tom "Tommy" Bianchi and his wife, Trina, were living in Vermont and attended a dog show in Quebec in 1977 when they discovered sighthounds -- in the form of Salukis -- and sighthound sport of lure coursing. Tom was on the fence about acquiring a Saluki and getting into the sport, but Trina gave him a friendly nudge, and off they went. At a lure coursing meeting in 1978, their Saluki was injured during the meeting. Tom was an accountant at the time, but his passion was woodworking, and he was always on the lookout for a way to turn his hobby into a full-time career. When he observed the less-than-safe equipment at the meeting, he realized that he could, in Trina's words, "build a better mousetrap." He believed he could design and building safer, high quality lure coursing equipment for the sport. Together, he and Trina would build and grow Injoy Lure Coursing equipment as the premiere brand for the community. The company would take a hit in the 2000s when Tom developed cancer and later succumbed to the disease. Trina would continue to carry the torch, but in 2023, she realized that she needed someone to pick up the Injoy torch and carry it for the lure coursing community. Enter Eddie and Selma Kominek -- Afghan Hound and lure coursing enthusiasts since 2004, they expressed interest in purchasing Injoy and continuing to build the high quality product that started with Tom and Trina. In this episode, host John Parker sits down the past and present owners of Injoy Lure Coursing equipment -- Trina, Eddie and Selma. They talk about Tom Bianchi's commitment to excellence in all things -- doing things with "joy in his heart" -- and how this shaped Injoy Lure Coursing. John also learns how this philosophy was important in the recent purchase of Injoy by the Komineks and what it means for the future of the company and for the sport of lure coursing. Love the Breeds: Salukis with Caroline Coile [caption id="attachment_12406" align="alignleft" width="330"] Caroline Coile with her Saluki, Prophet.[/caption] Author and Saluki breeder Caroline Coile joins host Laura Reeves for the kick off of our Love the Breeds feature. Some of Coile's tongue in cheek descriptions of the ancient breed include “breathing furniture,” “arm candy” and “they don't like to show their feelings.” “We have a lot of artwork that does indicate that there were saluki-like dogs … all over the Middle East,” Coile said. “But not just the Middle East, but everywhere the Silk Road went. We see them in China and obviously it's pretty easy to take this dog and bring it with you to trade or hunt or whatever. “We know that some of the first Salukis that came to the western part of the world, to England, were there by the 1700s because there was a famous painting of Zilla … she was, if we can judge from this painting, a gorgeous black and tan, very refined, long feathering… she would have won in the show ring today. [caption id="attachment_12411" align="alignright" width="437"] Baha, Ch Srinagar Bhavant Bhairava CD LCM, Coile's first saluki, in 1975.[/caption] “I think that there were two different families (of Salukis), those that went with the Bedouin and they probably hunted hare and rabbit and helped fill their pot with that whatever they could catch. And then I think there were some that the royalty took out on the giant Gazelle Hunts, which would have been a great King Tut and all that sort of thing. A great sport, but probably not a cost efficient one in terms of, you know, calories per what you can bring back. “An advantage to the Saluki is how peaceful they are. When they're not going, they're peaceful and they're not fighting with each other. They're not fighters. They get along. This is the norm. They like to sleep in your bed. They won't stay off your furniture. They are climbers. I have one that can get on the refrigerator. Oh well, she doesn't just jump up from the floor, she gets on the counter beforehand and won't stay off that though so I put stuff on the refrigerator to keep it away from her. [caption id="attachment_12404" align="alignleft" width="405"] BIS BIF HIT GCh Khiva's Prophet of Baha, CD, FCh, SC, RA, JOR[/caption] “I know one of the things that I think is really important to get across to folks that want to live with what I sort of jokingly, to my friends, refer to as dog arm candy. They're really beautiful. (But) the important part to remember is they're dogs and their long developed natural instincts are to chase and kill things and do that very independently. “The whole motto is that saying ‘if looks could kill' … you look at their breed standard and that basically defines the saluki breed standard in four words. I get a lot of inquiries from new pet owners saying, ‘We're marathon runners and we heard that Salukis are long distance runners.' And I have to say, ‘Yeah, they're long distance sprinters, if that makes any sense? They can run at full double suspension gallop longer than any other breed, but I guarantee you that if you try to trot with it for any length of time, it's like dragging an anchor behind you. They're not into that. They like to go full speed. “And then the other thing I would say is that I don't know about other breeds, but Salukis are the biggest complainers of the dog world. Oh, it's too hot. It's too cold. Because they act like they're royalty.”
In this episode, we explore the indispensable Sighthounds. The sleek, swift, and beloved desert hunters and guardians of antiquity. The story of Sighthounds is the story of the oldest known domesticated dogs. Many of the breeds cherished today pre-date recorded history. Their loyalty, speed, and ability to spot and catch prey over long distances in the cruelest of conditions made them essential assets to pharaohs, kings, and nomads alike. Sighthounds were so revered that statues, murals, and golden relics were created in their honor. As a final testament to their merit, Sighthounds have been discovered, mummified, and laid to rest in family tombs. Bonafide Bits: The Azawakh's unique lean, durable physique inspired a Formula 1 engineer. An ancient leather dog collar was discovered in Tutankhamun's tomb. Pharaoh Hounds are known to blush, and even smile. In addition to being the world's fastest dog, Greyhounds have a 270-degree range of vision. Canine champions of AKC's Fast CAT Invitationals have reached speeds of 35-45 mph. Featured Breeds: Azawakh Tall and elegant, the Azawakh is a West African sighthound that originates from the countries of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. The Azawakh has a short, fine coat that may come in any color or color combinations: red, clear sand to fawn, brindled, parti-color (which may be predominantly white), blue, black, and brown. The head may have a black mask and there may be white markings on the legs, bib, and at the tip of the tail. There are no color or marking disqualifications in the breed. Befitting its heritage, the Azawakh excels as a companion, guardian, and lure courser in the United States. Discover more about Azawakhs at AKC's Azawakh Breed Biography. Saluki Among the world's oldest breeds, the slim but rugged Saluki was the hunting hound of kings for thousands of years. Salukis are swift and agile sprinters who love a good chase. They make gentle, dignified, and independent but loyal pets. Discover more about Salukis at AKC's Saluki Breed Biography. Sloughi The Sloughi (SLOO-ghee) is a classically constructed sighthound of ancient lineage, originally bred to work on such game as hare, fox, jackal, gazelle, and wild pigs on the punishing terrain of its homeland. This is a lean, no-frills hound standing between 24 to 29 inches at the shoulder. Coat colors include shades of light sand to mahogany red-fawn, with or without brindling, with or without black markings, with no invasive white markings. The Sloughi's big, dark eyes are often described as “melancholy.” Discover more about Sloughis at AKC's Sloughi Breed Biography. Pharaoh Hound Pharaohs are sleek, aerodynamic coursing hounds bred for high-speed pursuit on rocky terrain. Among their several distinguishing traits are a tight tan coat with matching leather on the nose, ears, and eye rims; ravishing amber eyes; a white-tipped tail; the ability to smile; and a unique way of blushing when happy or excited (“His face glows like a god,” wrote an admirer some 3,000 years ago). These elegant visitors from antiquity possess the speed and graceful movement of all coursers descended from Bronze Age hounds. Discover more about Pharaoh Hounds at AKC's Pharaoh Hound Breed Biography. Basenji The Basenji, Africa's “Barkless Dog,” is a compact, sweet-faced hunter of intelligence and poise. They are unique and beguiling pets, best for owners who can meet their exercise needs and the challenge of training this catlike canine. Basenjis are small, graceful hounds standing 16 or 17 inches at the shoulder. They are recognizable by their glistening short coat, tightly curled tail, wrinkled forehead, and expressive almond-shaped eyes that convey a variety of subtle, humanlike emotions. Basenjis are a lovely sight at a standstill but more impressive yet at a fast trot when they exhibit the long, smooth strides of a mini-racehorse. And yes, it's true, they don't bark, but they make their feelings known with an odd sound described as something between a chortle and a yodel. Basenjis are fastidious and will groom themselves like cats. This has been called a “cult breed,”¿small in numbers, but those lucky enough to own one do so with singular devotion. Discover more about Basenjis at AKC's Basenji Breed Biography. Maltese The tiny Maltese, “Ye Ancient Dogge of Malta,” has been sitting in the lap of luxury since the Bible was a work in progress. Famous for their show-stopping, floor-length coat, Maltese are playful, charming, and adaptable toy companions. Discover more about Malteses at AKC's Maltese Breed Biography. Ibizan Hound The Ibizan Hound is a lithe and leggy visitor from the dawn of civilization, bred as a rabbit courser on the rocky shores of Spain's Balearic Islands. World-class sprinters and leapers, Ibizans need ample space to air out their engines. Ibizans are lithe and leggy visitors from the dawn of civilization. Art history students will recognize the elongated head, with its large erect ears, as a familiar motif of ancient Egypt. The elegant, racy body stands 22.5 to 27.5 inches at the shoulder, with coat colors of solid red or white, or red and white patterns. The rosy-colored leathers of the nose, eye rims, and lips, along with amber or caramel eyes, perfectly complement the coat. The breed's quiet grace is often described as deer-like. Discover more about Ibizan Hounds at AKC's Ibizan Hound Breed Biography. Greyhound Greyhounds are the essence of the dog breeder's credo “Form follows function.” From the narrow, aerodynamic skull to the shock-absorbing pads of the feet, Greyhounds are perfectly constructed for high-speed pursuit. The lean beauty of the Greyhound's “inverted S” shape, created by the deep chest curving gently into a tightly tucked waist, has been an object of fascination for artists, poets, and kings for as long as human beings have called themselves civilized. Greyhounds are the template from which other coursing hounds have been struck. Discover more about Greyhounds at AKC's Greyhound Breed Biography. Irish Wolfhound The calm, dignified, and kindly Irish Wolfhound is the tallest of all AKC breeds. Once fearless big-game hunters capable of dispatching a wolf in single combat, Wolfhounds today are the most serene and agreeable of companions. Discover more about Irish Wolfhounds at AKC's Irish Wolfhound Breed Biography. Whippet At somewhere between 18 and 22 inches at the shoulder, the Whippet looks like a Greyhound, but smaller. The Whippet exhibits the classic “inverted S” lines of the sighthound. The deep chest and trim waist; a lean head supported by a long, arched neck; and slim but sturdy legs combine in a picture of an agile, fleet-footed athlete. Between bursts of intense pursuit, Whippets love to stretch out and relax for long hours, enjoying the role of a loving, and loved, companion. Whippets like a fenced yard to run in, but they do nicely in cozy apartments too, as long as they are exercised properly. Another plus for city dwellers: Whippets rarely bark. Despite the breed's elegant looks, the Whippet is a robust, low-maintenance dog. Discover more about Whippets at AKC's Whippet Breed Biography. Thai Ridgeback The Thai Ridgeback is a muscular, medium-sized dog with a streamlined body that makes him very agile and a natural athlete. The ridge on his back is formed by hair growing in the opposite direction from the rest of his coat and the breed has up to 8 different ridge patterns. Puppies can be born without this ridge. Coat colors include solid blue, black, red, or fawn with a black mask occasionally on the red-coated dogs. Thai Ridgebacks also have spotted tongues and some even come with solid black/blue tongues. Today, most Ridgebacks are companion dogs, but they still maintain many of the same instincts for the jobs for which they were bred: hunting and guarding. They had to be independent and self-sufficient and hunt for their own food, which gave them strong survival instincts, a high prey drive, and a high level of intelligence. If well-bred and properly socialized, the Thai Ridgeback can be a loyal, loving pet. As a guarding breed, they are naturally protective of their home and can be reserved and suspicious of strangers. Thai Ridgebacks will need a patient, consistent, and experienced owner with a good understanding of dog behavior; they are not for first-time dog owners. Discover more about Thai Ridgebacks at AKC's Thai Ridgeback Breed Biography. Borzoi Borzoi are large, elegant sighthounds. A mature male stands at least 28 inches at the shoulder and weighs 75 to 105 pounds. Females will be smaller. Beneath the luxurious silky coat, Borzoi construction follows the ancient Greyhound template. Once known as the Russian Wolfhound, Borzoi were bred to be swift and tough enough to pursue and pin their ferocious lupine quarry. In their quiet, catlike way they can be stubborn, and training is best accomplished with patience, consistency, and good humor. Affectionate family dogs, Borzoi are nonetheless a bit too dignified to wholeheartedly enjoy a lot of roughhousing. The sight of a cat or squirrel on the run will quickly stir their instinct to pursue and fenced-in running room is a must. Discover more about Borzois at AKC's Borzoi Breed Biography. For more information about a specific breed visit the breed's parent club or AKC.org. Shareables: The fleet-footed whippet has been dubbed a poor man's racehorse. There's evidence that the Greeks not only developed collars but created spiked collars, to protect the necks of their hounds from a predator's bite Tesem is an ancient Egyptian catch-all term meaning hunting dog.

Saluki Tree of Life Alliance (STOLA) - http://www.stola.org/STOLA saves Salukis from kill-shelters, abusive situations, when individuals can no longer properly care for them, or when help is needed in natural disasters.Saluki Rescue of Arabia https://www.salukirescuearabia.org/Saluki Rescue of Arabia rehomes their rescue Salukis in the United Arab Emirates, Europe and North America. They have a strong network in these regions to do home checks and we remain in touch with the homes. Important to note: they are not currently adopting dogs to the US, due to temporary ban on dogs entering from many countries.Special Edition: The Sato Project - https://thesatoproject.org/The Sato Project is dedicated to rescuing abused and abandoned dogs from Puerto Rico. There are currently an estimated 500,000 stray dogs roaming the island's streets and beaches. With no access to food, fresh water, or veterinary care, many of these dogs are living daily lives of severe suffering. The municipal shelter system is drastically overwhelmed, with only five shelters across all 78 of the island's municipalities. These shelters have a combined euthanasia rate of over 94%. For thousands of stray and abandoned dogs across Puerto Rico, the Sato Project is their only hope.Instagram@macaroni.the.saluki@dotty.the.saluki

A definitely easier-than-yesterday crossword, Jean got through it expeditiously; Mike mysteriously forgot how to spell AUTO, opting for OTTO, hence hilarity and longer-than-normal-solve-times ensued. Still, you have to like a crossword with clues like 55D -- One of six in this clue, WORD -- and we did!
Seth, who is also known as Set, is an Ancient Egyptian god who is regarded as the patron of Upper Egypt's 11th nome. He was the brother of one of the gods, known as Osiris, and was an enemy of the god of the desert, known as Horus, who was the child of Isis. His cult eventually died out during the 1st millennium BC, and he was regarded as an evil god later. The worship of Seth was originally held at Nubt, which was a predynastic center in Upper Egypt. It was also the site of a vast cemetery. The town lost its position as the pre-eminent center of Upper Egypt after the Kingdom of Egypt was unified in 3050 BCE, with the capital being Abydos and the royal god Horus. He is one of the first five gods that were created by the union of the earth and the sky. His name is often translated as an "instigator of confusion," and he was associated with people and foreign lands.Seth was depicted as a composite figure that had a canine body, a long, curved, pointed snout, and square-tipped ears. Various animals such as the aardvark, ass, fennec, jackal, oryx, and the long-snouted mouse have also been suggested as his form.Even the ancient Egyptians rendered Seth's figure in various ways, which makes it look like a mythical composite. Some believe that it's a depiction of a giraffe, as the flat-topped horns resembled nosecones in the animal. The Egyptians depicted Seth in various ways, such as as as a donkey or a man wearing a mask made out of donkey's head. During the Late Period, Seth was also depicted as a mythological creature. He is often depicted as a red-haired creature with a long, curly tail and a dog-like body that's referred to as the Seth Animal. Scholars claim that this mythological creature was inspired by the Saluki breed. Others maintain that it's a mythological creature that was only meant to represent Seth, whose other notable symbols included the racoons, crocodiles, tortoises, and the griffin.Read more at https://mythlok.com/seth/
Meet Dr. Darin Collins, Saluki breeder, new CHF CEO Dr. Darin Collins, DVM, joins host Laura Reeves to discuss his new role as Chief Executive Officer at the Canine Health Foundation. Collins, a longtime Saluki breeder, came to CHF in October, leaving his role as the Director of Animal Health Programs at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. Collins' trajectory in the world of purebred dogs started as a boy in Central Illinois with hunting dogs, specifically a Brittany. “It wasn't really until after vet school that I got a Saluki,” Collins said. “I got a Saluki that nobody else wanted, that had recovered from a broken leg. That was my experimental Saluki. I made him live with me in an apartment in Chicago. And then I moved him to Seattle in 1991, when I took the position at the Zoo.” In Seattle, Collins contacted George and Sally Bell, of the famed Bel S'mbran Salukis. That encounter began a lifetime friendship with a direct through line to his new role at CHF. “When Dave Frei and George strategized how to film the breeds during the day at the Garden, I was one of the camera people selected. I had that for about 15 years, until which time the contract ended and I was no longer a camera person. But at that point the habit of going to New York in February had already been established. "I met people (during that time) and one of those individuals was influential in helping (my name) actually surface when the search came out for a CEO for the Canine Health Foundation. “I went from working with 300 taxonomic groups and over 1000 individuals of 600 species, to working with one species. Looking at all the divergence within the dog world, I find that very, very compelling. I love canine health and I'm very well suited to be in the position that I'm at right now. "I've only been here six months so I'm still learning the in's and outs of the organization and the job, but it's a phenomenal organization. I work with phenomenal people. We're all devoted to dogs and dog health and understanding disease and treatments and cures and diagnostics. It's phenomenal vortex of opportunity.”

The NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament is a single-elimination tournament of 68 teams that compete in seven rounds for the national championship. This is the March Madness episode with my college teammate Stetson Hairston on the call-in.
