The Dedeaux Download Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and podcast co-host Kasey Kazliner breaking down USC baseball finishing the regular season with a series loss on the road at Washington, winning in the finale after dropping five of six games prior. Shotgun and Kasey take a look at the action, noting three positives, including an electric performance from Mason Edwards as well as a positive outing from fellow left-handed pitcher Caden Hunter and Ethan Hedges breaking through with a big hit in extra innings. They also look at the end-of-regular-season struggles for the Trojans and what USC has to do to right the ship at the opportune time. After a break, USC pitching coach Sean Allen joins the show to talk about what can be expected from the Big Ten Tournament since he's coached in it previously and how the unique pod system the Big Ten has gone to this season changes the dynamic, especially as the top seed in one of the four pods. Allen also discusses what they've done to try to get both Edwards and Hunter back locked in on the mound to give the Trojans more depth, especially with the emergence of freshman Andrew Johnson. USC's pitching coach also gives an assessment of the season to this point for a staff that has endured some significant injuries and states the Trojans' case for the NCAA selection committee. Shotgun and Kasey close out the show taking a look at where the Trojans' postseason hopes stand after back-to-back series losses but seeing their RPI climb in the last week. The Dedeaux Download Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and podcast co-host Kasey Kazliner breaking down USC baseball's strong week that featured a midweek win in a raucous environment at Arizona State and a Big Ten series win over Nebraska that ended up being a bit of a disappointment. Shotgun and Kasey break down all the action, looking at the positives of the Trojans going 5-2 against all Power 4 opponents over a 10-day stretch and the impressive bounce back by freshman starter Grant Govel. The podcasters also look at three negatives on each side, including defensive struggles in center field leading to a pair of big innings and not being able to get a sweep despite vastly outplaying the Cornhuskers. USC pitching coach Sean Allen then joins the show to talk about his impressions of the Trojans' pitching staff as the season approaches the halfway point. Allen discusses how Caden Hunter and Caden Aoki have both been successful despite attacking things in two different manners and chats about his mound visit philosophy. After a break, Hunter, the Trojans' Friday starter, joins the show to discuss his recruitment to USC and why the program's challenges of being forced to practice off campus during current major stadium renovations and having to play away from their home field actually helped the Trojans land Hunter. The junior lefthander also breaks down his recent development of a cutter and how he's tried to implement it into his repertoire. Following Hunter's appearance, Shotgun and Kasey take a look at where exactly the Trojans stand after getting another conference series win. The podcast then previews USC's upcoming week of action, beginning with a midweek matchup against a ranked UC Irvine team before a weekend trip to Indiana to take on the Hoosiers. Can your children trust you? Before you answer that question, another question should be asked: "Do your children talk to you?" In our relationship with our children, trust is a precious commodity; but it's not one that magically appears in abundance, as if you've suddenly won the lottery of your child's confidence. Trust is acquired and saved over time. Over long and sustained periods as we prove our love and commitment to our children. As we talk to them and encourage them to talk to us. Because if we haven't convinced them they can talk to us, it's going to be very difficult to convince them to trust us. Shotgun Spratling and Jack Smith are back to break down the latest news and developments around the USC baseball program, including the continued rebuild of Dedeaux Field and the move to the Big Ten Conference, which means the Trojan road warriors will be playing even farther from home this season. The podcasting duo look at the different angles of a second season on the road and the move to the Big Ten Conference, where the Trojans have been picked anywhere from fourth to 11th in an unofficial poll of other Big Ten coaches. They also look at what USC needs to do to get over the hump to make a regional after being oh so close in each of the first two seasons under head coach Andy Stankiewicz. Shotgun and Jack also take a look back to the 2024 season to assess what went well, where the Trojans are set up for success in 2025 and where they'll have to make improvements with a roster that saw a lot of turnover. USC head coach Andy Stankiewicz then joins the Dedeaux Download to talk about another season of unique challenges for the Trojans, but one that should come with a little more familiarity than last season when there were adjustments routinely being made on the fly as USC played at Great Park in Orange County and LMU's Page Stadium. Stankiewicz talks about how the program has to keep progressing forward rather than taking a step back, no matter what challenges they face. He also discusses building a non-conference schedule, the challenges the Big Ten move will present and the hire of experienced pitching coach Sean Allen, who will give the Trojans a little more familiarity when they enter Big Ten play and have to travel east to Michigan, Indiana, Penn State and Minnesota. Everything, and I mean everything that is right and true is under assault today. For instance, we've moved far beyond questioning whether a woman's rightful place is in the home rearing her children. Today, the world and all her emissaries of confusion question whether such a thing as a woman even exists. For decades we've been told that women are just as capable as men, no matter the field, no matter the task. Predictably (and at the same time inconceivably) we are told today that men are just as capable as women to the point that they may also become pregnant and bear children. This upsidedownedness came as a direct result of our collective failure to not only recognize but appreciate the wisdom and beauty of God's respective callings in each of our lives. We each have unique, precisely crafted roles. It is true we may choose not to fill them; but we do so at our own peril. This episode is a call to embrace and, just as importantly, give thanks for how God made us and who he calls us to be. This is the last episode in a 3 episode series. What do you say to your child when a simple "yes" or "no" just don't seem to meet the demands of the hour? The answer? Nothing at all. For most parents, though, saying nothing is simply not an option. They're afraid it might communicate weakness or concede too much ground to their children. But here's the thing - clear answers regarding how to deal with parenting problems are hard to come by. We often need a bit of time before we can more accurately assess what's going on. In such moments, a premature reward or correction might do more harm than good. Better to say nothing at all, take a step back and get a firm grip on what you're really dealing with before you give that "yes" or "no". Pony is a language born out of what should be a simple need - actor-style programming with C performance. On the face of it, that shouldn't be too hard to do. Writing an actor framework isn't trivial, but it's well-trodden ground. The hard part is balancing performance and memory management. When your actors start passing hundreds of thousands of complex messages around, either you need some complex rules about who owns and frees which piece of memory, or you just copy every piece of data and kill your performance. Pony's solution is a third way - a novel approach to memory management called reference capabilities. In this week's Developer Voices, Sean Allen joins us from the Pony team to explain what reference capabilities are, how Pony uses them in its high-performance actor framework, and how they implement a garbage collector without stop-the-world pauses. Like anything in life, homeschooling presents us with A LOT of questions. What math curriculum to use? Should I join a co-op? What should be in my morning time basket? and on and on and on. The only thing that exceeds the number of questions we have are the number of answers that get thrown our way (often without permission). The truth is, of all the voices vying for your attention, there's only one you actually need to listen to. It's the voice of the Holy Spirit, and though the Lord may speak to us in many different ways (through other people, through experiences, etc.), he never contradicts himself. One of the things that the homeschooling movement has sought to address is the inordinate degree of separation that modern society has inculcated between parents and their children. Bringing children home has helped to restore the privilege of acting as the primary influence in their lives back where it belongs–with the parents. However, as good as the desire is to hold tight to our children and shield them from harmful influences, we must be careful not to hold them too tight (particularly older teenagers) and thereby restrict their access to those who might influence them for good and who may be the only one who can finish the work of truth in certain areas of their lives.  About Sean Sean Allen is the founder of The Well Ordered Homeschool, husband to his beautiful bride Caroline and a proud father of eight.
