Third Eye Cinema / Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine podcast

Archibald Alec Leach was born in Bristol, England at the turn of the century, January 18, 1904 to a tailor and a seamstress. A theatrical tour of NYC led him to emigrate at the ripe old age of 16, where he became a vaudeville song and dance man on the same circuit as the likes of the Marx Brothers, Abbott and Costello and Ted Healy and his Stooges. Moving to Hollywood at the height of the Depression, he wound up cast as handsome young men and rich playboys in a handful of Marlene Dietrich and Mae West films, the latter of which elevated him to leading man status.   But it wasn't until the rise of the screwball comedy that he truly made his mark, starring in several of the best known entries thereof.  A long run of similar if, by the late forties, increasingly inferior efforts was salvaged by four well regarded films for the great Alfred Hitchcock, which subverted his image in favor of a darker, more realistic persona. These quartet of roles almost led to his casting as the first James Bond in Doctor No, but he would only commit to one film in what was always intended as an ongoing series...and the rest is history. After a handful of interesting if decidedly flawed oddities, he finally retired from film in the mid 60s, leaving behind more of a unique character and persona than there ever was a consistent body of work to be remembered by...those Hitchcock films aside. So join us as we take on the inimitable Cary Grant, only here on Weird Scenes! Thank you to one of our Patreon members for recommending “Bombshell” 1933 for this podcast. Director Victor Fleming has created a fast-paced comedy. Among Mr. Fleming's many successes are “The Wizard of Oz” 1939 (Episode 144) and “Gone with the Wind” 1939.The talented Jean Harlow plays Lola Burns. Lola is “fed up” with the never-ending stories orchestrated in the press by Publicist E. J. “Space” Hanlon played by Lee Tracy. Lola's father played by Frank Morgan and her brother played by Ted Healy create chaotic situations made more unpredictable by those large shaggy dogs engulfing Lola and her entourage. Then mix in Franchot Tone as the wealthy and romantic Gifford Middleton to maybe carry Lola away from this wildness. All this adds to our enjoyment of the movie. Madcap fun indeed! Here's the IMDB page for “Bombshell”Up next is “King Solomon's Mines”Support us over on Patreon!

Generally speaking, vintage comedy fans consider the golden era of The Three Stooges to be the shorts made between 1934-1946 with Curly Howard as the third player. However, all things must pass and the group was forced to soldier on after Curly suffered a massive stroke and was rendered unable to perform. His brother Shemp Howard, who was part of the act in its earliest days, was brought in as a temporary pinch hitter and was persuaded to stay when it became clear that Curly was not going to recover. Shemp contributed to dozens of shorts until he died a little under ten years he rejoined the troupe. Ryan is joined by Rachel for this examination of four representational shorts from the Shemp era. Discussion topics include Shemp's days with the Stooges under Ted Healy, his lengthy career as a character actor outside of Stooge films, the differences between Shemp's persona and Curly's, the legacy of the "fake Shemp", the etymology of slapstick, and the impact of Jewish comedy on American cinema. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ryan-valentine3/support

He is best known as the third Stooge in the Three Stooges, a role he played when the act began in the early 1920s (1923–1932), while it was still associated with Ted Healy and known as "Ted Healy and his Stooges"; and again from 1946 until his death in 1955. During the fourteen years between his times with the Stooges, he had a successful solo career as a film comedian, including series of shorts by himself and with partners, and reluctantly returned to the Stooges as a favor to his brothers Moe and Curly. This week’s episode takes us back to the early days of Hollywood, and specifically to the mysterious, premature deaths of two top comedic stars. Known as “The Ice Cream Blonde” and “Hot Toddy,” Thelma Todd went from being Miss Massachusetts 1925 to a star of over 100 short and feature films. Her reputation as a comedic actress was followed by a reputation as a partier, and the aftermath of one party in December of 1935 was followed soon after by her death. Ted Healy was an early comedy star and a veteran of the vaudeville circuit. These days, he’s most known for being the creator of the Three Stooges. Two years and a few days after Thelma Todd’s death, Healy passed away under mysterious circumstances as well. And rumor has it, he had been attacked at a party a few days before. A party at Club Trocadero: the same club Thelma Todd had partied at before her death. We explore both stories this week! Also, This Week In Murder looks at a new sentencing in an old drunk driving killing and… death by gender reveal party? And finally, we close with Who Died The Worst! Like what we're doing? Sofa King Podcast

On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we crack wise about the greatest comedy trio to have ever been put on film—The Three Stooges. Their short films were so popular that they single handedly saved the genre from dying for years and years. They poked fun at Hitler in the 1940s, and were so good at it that they made his personal death list. Though they started as a small vaudeville act in New York, they became the biggest game in comedy for multiple studios and for several decades. The keystone of the Stooges was one family—the Horowitz brothers. Shemp, Moe, and Jerome (aka Curley) Horowitz were all high school drop outs who had a love of acting and theater and quit school to pursue it. Shemp and Moe did various small roles, worked at the theaters and movie companies, and paid their dues. Curley hung out where they did, learned the business back stage, and did his own thing as well, such as studying dance. Eventually, a childhood friend named Ted Healy created a successful vaudeville show, and he needed stooges. He would play the straight man and try to sing and talk to the audience, but three bumbling stooges would come out and interrupt him. Though, it was a rotating cast, Shemp and Moe were the best at it. They hired a violin player named Larry Fine, and the rest was history. As they became more and more popular on stage and some small film roles, Shemp quit because he hated Healy. They added Curley to the act, and they blew up. Their films became so successful, that the movie companies could force theaters to take on B movies and stinkers they made or hold back the latest Three Stooges films. When they were at their peak, however, Curley had a series of health problems and strokes (that some think came from the beatings he took on set). He had to quit, and Shemp came back from a very successful solo act. It was a wild time in Hollywood. Healey was found dead, likely beaten to death by one of Lucky Luciano’s men. Larry at one point had to get paid more for fear that someone would bomb their stage acts. And their horrible producer screwed them out of millions of dollars by permanently convincing them that their movies weren’t making any money. When Shemp suddenly died of a heart attack, they considered quitting, but their evil producer held them to the final four films they had to make. So, how did this lead to fake Shemp? What was Joe, and who was Curley Joe, and why weren’t they the same person? Why did Larry live in a hotel until middle age? What were our personal experiences watching them as we grew up? Red Time For Bonzo: A Marxist-Reaganist Film Podcast (Ronald Reagan Filmography)

Ronald Reagan in a Busby Berkeley extravaganza!!?? Well, sort of... The Gipper graduates from Warners' B-squad to the big time, but only to the tune of a 30 second two-shot with the great Dick Powell (67% of our hosts disagree with that description of Dick). And it's not exactly Berkeley's finest effort, either. Nothing proto-psychedelic here. Unless Mabel Todd's dotty dialogue disorients you.  And - to quote Mabel - we had some interesting talks! Topics include some notes on Johnny Mercer; the sad demise of erstwhile Stooge Majordomo Ted Healy; the return of Clinton Rosemond and Allyn Joslyn; the mystery that is Hugh Herbert; a despicable blackface gag that tells you everything you need to know about the banality of white supremacist evil during the 1930s; counterfeit fashion plate Alan Mowbray; Louella Parsons; some excuses for Dave to talk about the Lane Sisters (Rosemary and Lola are actually in the film); Glenda Farrell, professional wiseacre; Frances Langford; Johnnie "Scat" Davis; the Second New Deal; Court Packing; some more quality time with Norbert "I LOVE ACTRESSES" Lusk; and even a bona fide cultural leap forward in the persons of the Benny Goodman Quartet (BG, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, and Teddy Wilson, the "Marxist Mozart") - the first integrated group of musicians ever to appear upon an American screen.   Toward the end, Dave, Romy, and Gareth discuss their dismal expectations re: the then-imminent Ontario provincial election (the episode was recorded in May). Suffice it to say, those expectations have been lived down to by Doug Ford, who is even less "refreshing" than Ted Healy.  Now is a time for choosing. Choose RED TIME FOR BONZO! The Three Stooges were an American vaudeville and comedy team active from 1928 until 1970, best known for their 190 Columbia short-subject films that are still syndicated on television. Their hallmark was physical farce and slapstick. In films, the Stooges were commonly known by their actual first names. There were a total of six stooges over the act's run, with only three active at any given time, but Moe Howard and Larry Fine were mainstays throughout the ensemble's run of more than forty years. The act began as part of a mid-1920s vaudeville comedy act, billed as "Ted Healy and His Stooges", consisting of Healy, Moe Howard, Moe's brother Shemp Howard and Larry Fine. The four made one feature film, Soup to Nuts, before Shemp left to pursue a solo career. He was replaced by his younger brother, Jerome "Curly" Howard, in 1932. Two years later, the trio left Healy and signed on to appear in their own short-subject comedies for Columbia Pictures, now billed as "The Three Stooges". From 1934 to 1946, Moe, Larry and Curly produced over 90 short films for Columbia. It was during this period that the three were at their peak popularity. Curly suffered a debilitating stroke in May 1946, and Shemp returned, reinstating the original lineup, until his death of a heart attack on November 22, 1955. Film actor Joe Palma was used as a temporary stand-in to complete four Shemp-era shorts under contract (the maneuver thereafter became known as the term of art "Fake Shemp"). Columbia contract player Joe Besser joined as the third Stooge for two years (1956–57), departing in 1958 to nurse his ailing wife. Columbia terminated its shorts division and released its Stooges contractual rights to the Screen Gems production studio. Screen Gems then syndicated the shorts to television, whereupon the Stooges became one of the most popular comedy acts of the early 1960s. Comic actor Joe DeRita became "Curly Joe" in 1958, replacing Besser for a new series of full-length theatrical films. With intense television exposure, the act regained momentum throughout the 1960s as popular kiddie fare, until Larry Fine's paralyzing stroke in January 1970. Fine died in 1975 after a further series of strokes. Attempts were made to revive the Stooges with longtime supporting actor Emil Sitka in Larry's role in 1970, and again in 1975, but this attempt was cut short by Moe's death on May 4, 1975. This is the story of the life and death of Ted Healy, the man who started the Three Stooges. The thing about Ted’s death is that many, even today, think it was murder. He was born Ernest Lea Nash on October 1, 1896 in Kaufman, Texas. In 1908, his family moved to New York. It was there he became friends with another boy in the neighborhood named Moses Horwitz. Moses, who was nicknamed Moe by his family, had five brothers. Two of Moe’s younger brothers were Samuel Horwitz, who was called Shemp, and Jerome Lester Horwitz, who was known as Babe, but would later to be known as Curly. In his autobiography, Moe described his relationship with Healy as inseparable.
