Brians Questions: Hello! I recently got into woodworking in part after being inspired by finding a local lumber yard and not being beholden to the big orange box. I've realized my next step is to figure out a planing method - the wood I buy is rough sawn, and I'm not in a position to buy a planer or jointer given the size of my garage shop/price constraints. I've done some research on hand planes and plan to start experimenting with some used/refurbished ones. Do you think this is a reasonable method for small/medium projects (bookshelves and tables would be largest I'd do), or should I jump right to other methods like a router or electric planer. Thanks! Ryan Zach from Minnesota here. I heard you're in need of questions, so I figured I'd come to the rescue. My question is regarding developing and learning new techniques and skills in the shop. You guys have previously made the suggestion that when trying to learn new skills, the best approach is to take on a project which incorporates one new skill (the one you would like to learn) versus diving into a project that's going to involve several unfamiliar skills.  While I think that's a great approach, my question is: how do I know when it is time to move on to another new skill? For example, if I decide I want to learn how to use dovetails, how many projects in a row should I spend focusing on that technique before progressing to learning another new one? Should I keep at it until I feel that I've mastered dovetails, or should I just practice it until I feel like I have a firm understanding of the process? I appreciate how genuine and down-to-earth you all are. I'm currently building a small part-time crafting business using a Onefinity CNC and an xTool laser. For software, I use LightBurn and Carveco Maker+. I recently heard Guy talking about using his laser, and I think I've also heard you discuss CNC work in past episodes. I was curious if either of you have any advice for laser engraving softwoods like pine. I often get blotchy or inconsistent results because of the varying grain density, and I'm always looking for ways to improve my finished products. On the CNC side, I'd love to hear your thoughts on workholding methods. My spoilboard has dovetail tracks, so I use homemade clamps quite a bit. I also use double-sided tape regularly. Surprisingly, the foam double-sided tape from Dollar Tree (three rolls for $1.25) has worked far better for me than some of the CNC-specific tapes I've tried, which didn't seem to hold very well. For two-sided projects, I've also made a few fixture boards with dowel-pin locators, and those have been a huge help with alignment. I've learned that there's always something new to learn in this hobby, and I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Thanks for the great content, and keep up the awesome work! Kevin I'm building a round table with an x-frame base.  The top 60” in diameter and 1 1/4” thick hickory.  The x-frame is 37” across.  I also plan on adding an apron about 3 1/2” tall to the table.  I have heard more cons than pros on c-channel but would like your guys opinion on this.  I definitely can't have this thing droop.  Also, while I have your attention, how would you attach the apron to the top taking into account wood movement.  Thanks for having a great podcast.  You have helped me a number of times in the past with valuable advice. Tom Huys Questions: I have an old park bench that I rebuilt three years ago using white oak. I applied 3 coats of Minwax spar urethane over the wood, sanding with 240 grit sandpaper between coats. Now, after 3 years, the finish has failed and the wood has noticeable splintering, peeling, and bowing. While I think I can salvage the wood on the back with sanding and refinishing, the seat slats will need to be replaced. I wanted to use quarter sawn white oak, but my lumber supplier only had rift sawn white oak in stock at the time. I feel this will be adequate, but would appreciate your opinions regarding wood choice. My main question is about finishing: will I be further ahead to use a penetrating oil first, such as tung oil, before the spar urethane? Will this add to the longevity of the wood? I realize that the sun and the elements will degrade any finish over time.  Thanks for what I would consider to be the top woodworking podcast available! Kurt Thank you for all your good work. As in a previous question, I am the one who makes furniture for immigrants. In your last podcast you discussed the importance of color match and grain pattern when assembling a table top.  I am experimenting with a 3rd: "Feel", and would like to know your take on this. I am working with cherry so it easy to manage. I find that commercial furniture finishes, particularly on table tops are so smooth that if you close your eyes and pass your fingers over them, you can't tell it was made of wood. I have felt that the "texture" and feel of a finished top should reflect the purpose of the piece. A  "boot bench" ( I live in Maine) was prepped to have a deliberate grainy feel, a hallway table was hand planed with an LN 5  set to produce medium shavings to  smooth it somewhat, and finally a coffee top was hand planed to fine shavings and then  finished with 1000 grit sandpaper that left a top almost glass like.  The first two were finished with shellac and some wax.  The last was finished with shellac and "Tried and True". Question: do you vary the prep before finishing a piece in order to convey a different "feel" to the top based on customer preference, or purpose of the piece? El diputado nacional de La Libertad Avanza Diego Hartfield se refirió en Infobae a la eliminación de las PASO y sostuvo: "Creemos que las PASO se tienen que eliminar. No podemos someter a la gente obligatoriamente a ir a votar, gastar creo que son trescientos millones de dólares para definir una interna partidaria". Y explicó que el debate arranca en la Cámara alta: "Es algo que creo nosotros, desde La Libertad Avanza, estamos convencidos que la gran mayoría de la población no está de acuerdo con tener que ir a votar obligatoriamente y nosotros vamos a ir presionando para que se eliminen las PASO. Pero nace por el Senado, o sea que ahí Patricia será la interlocutora seguramente".El gobernador bonaerense Axel Kicillof opinó en C5N sobre la eliminación de las PASO y afirmó: "Yo veo que ha servido, que muchas veces ha servido, otras veces no se ha utilizado estando, pero sin estar. Fausto Spotorno, economista, analizó en Infobae el ritmo de la recuperación económica y afirmó: "Lo peor ya pasó. Ahora tampoco creo que vamos a salir disparados como el chicotazo para adelante, ¿no? Me imagino que vamos a ver una recuperación gradual". Consultado por la morosidad, señaló que es un tema a seguir de cerca y agregó: "Te está dando la señal de que esto está tardando en recuperarse", aunque aclaró que "volvió a crecer en mayo" después de haberse estancado en abril. Y concluyó: "Te das cuenta que la salida es más lenta de lo que uno hubiera querido".Spotorno, se refirió en Infobae a la relación entre bancos y billeteras virtuales y explicó: "No están desconectados los bancos de la billetera virtual. O sea, cuando una billetera virtual te da un crédito a vos, se lo tomó previamente un banco". El economista advirtió que "a la larga, si esto crece mucho, podrías tener un problema con los bancos", pero remarcó que no es la situación actual: "Hoy lo que vemos es que es más un problema de consumo que el sistema financiero, porque el sistema financiero sí está seguro". Y concluyó: "Puede ser un problema de rentabilidad para el sistema financiero, pero no es un problema serio para el sistema financiero".Diego Santilli, jefe de Gabinete, cuestionó en LN+ con Luis Majul las críticas de la oposición al Gobierno y sostuvo: "Ahora sacamos el súper RIGI, que son para inversiones que no existen en la Argentina. La gente no aguanta más el chamuyo, porque con el chamuyo no come. Con el chamuyo le matan a un pibe. Con el chamuyo no se resuelven las situaciones diarias. Con el chamuyo la inflación sigue galopando". Y concluyó: "Es diálogo para tener acuerdos, acuerdos que nos saquen a la Argentina hacia adelante y que logremos las reformas estructurales. Y tenés un presidente que está dispuesto a hacer todas las reformas necesarias para que la Argentina salga adelante".Carlos Bianco, ministro de Gobierno bonaerense, comparó en Infobae la gestión de Alberto Fernández con la de Javier Milei. Consultado sobre si la economía actual está peor que en 2023, afirmó: "Por supuesto". Y ante la pregunta de si Alberto Fernández tuvo mejor gestión que Milei, sostuvo: "En algunas cosas sí, en otras cosas no. ¿Había más inflación? Claro, es un dato de la realidad. Ahora, ¿la situación productiva era peor o mejor que ahora? Era mejor, claramente". Y agregó: "La industria estaba mucho mejor, la construcción estaba mucho mejor, el comercio estaba mucho mejor, que son los sectores que le dan empleo al 50% de los argentinos. Ahora, yo no te digo que no había problema. Te estoy diciendo que no era la catástrofe productiva que estamos teniendo hoy".Diego Santilli, jefe de Gabinete, cargó en LN+ contra Axel Kicillof y afirmó: "Axel Kicillof fue el peor ministro de Economía en Argentina, nos dejó un desastre con YPF. Javier Milei compartió un video en TikTok junto a Diego Santilli en su primer día como jefe de Gabinete. El presidente sostuvo: "Vamos a seguir bajando la inflación, vamos a seguir bajando la pobreza, vamos a seguir bajando la indigencia. Vamos a hacer grande a la Argentina nuevamente", mientras que Santilli afirmó: "Vamos a trabajar para sacar todas las reformas que la Argentina necesita".Diego Santilli juró como jefe de Gabinete de Ministros. Javier Milei le tomó juramento con la fórmula protocolar: "Contador público nacional, Diego César Santilli, ¿jurás por Dios y por la patria, sobre estos santos evangelios, desempeñar con lealtad y patriotismo el cargo de jefe de Gabinete de Ministros para el que has sido nombrado, cumpliendo y haciendo cumplir en cuanto a vos respeta la Constitución de la Nación Argentina?", a lo que Santilli respondió: "¡Sí, juro!".Santilli, tras jurar como jefe de Gabinete, dialogó con la prensa y explicó su rol: "Lo que me toca a mí es llevar adelante y coordinar a los ministros. Este gobierno no emite para poder financiar tanto subsidio, tiene que reasignar recursos. Entonces, queremos que los recursos vayan adonde más se necesitan". Majul le retrucó: "De alguna manera lo que está diciendo es: abríguense, muchachos, porque las tarifas van a seguir subiendo".El embajador de Estados Unidos en Argentina, Peter Lamelas, afirmó que "Milei despertó al mundo" y remarcó: "Es primera vez que tenemos un alineamiento tan fuerte entre los Estados Unidos y la Argentina, que hay dos presidentes que son amigos y verdaderamente dos pueblos que son amigos. El presidente Trump es amigo del presidente Milei. Me mandó aquí a ayudar al presidente Milei y a fortalecer los lazos que tenemos entre los Estados Unidos y el pueblo argentino".El jefe de Gobierno porteño, Jorge Macri, cuestionó en una reunión con vecinos la asistencia a personas en situación de calle y afirmó: "Aquí hay una discusión que tenemos que tener también, y la tengo con la Iglesia en general, porque la lógica de darle comida y abrigo afuera, porque nunca la meten en la iglesia, ¿no?
