Old Hollywood and mysterious deaths seem to go hand in hand, whether it's the case of the Black Dahlia or the mysterious "suicides" of Marilyn Monroe and George Reeves. In the same vein as the mysterious suicides of the latter stars, comes the tale of the mysterious death of movie star Thelma Todd. It is a story that contains all the elements of a perfect Hollywood drama: fame, fortune, gangsters, love and betrayal. Was she murdered, did she die by accident or did she die at her own hand? Whatever the truth may be, her spirit is at unrest. With listener insights, we take another look at the film that marked the Marxes' Hollywood debut and stands out as the only one featuring a manicurist we can name. This episode highlights the distinctiveness of Monkey Business, as comments explore how it stands apart from both their earlier work and later films. We'll dive into praise for Thelma Todd and even Zeppo, alongside the random nitpicks Marx fans are famous for. Joe Adamson, Scott Alexander and Eddie Deezen are among those contributing. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** When THERESA HARRIS appears on screen, you cannot take your eyes off of her. Beautiful, talented, and a skilled singer and dancer, she lights up any scene she's in. Despite appearing in over 100 films, she rarely received screen credit and most often played a maid, waitress, or other types of domestic servant. Her parts were small, but her charisma and presence on screen were enormous! As a black woman in the early days of Hollywood, she was limited in the roles she could perform by the restrictive Hayes Code of 1934 and the horrible Jim Crow laws of the South. Still, she is a welcome presence in so many classic films. This week, we look at the extraordinary life and career of the talented THERESA HARRIS. Thelma Todd was one of the great comediennes of the 1920s and ‘30s, working alongside Laurel & Hardy, the Marx Brothers, and Buster Keaton. She confronted a stalker on a dark corner of Hollywood Boulevard with just one dollar and a gun in her purse. She stood up to the mob when they tried to start a gambling den in the back room of the café she ran with her lover. She killed off her world-famous name in an attempt to give up comedy for dramatic acting. And then she herself was killed off…or was she? Thelma Todd's death in 1935 at the age of 29 remains one of the great unsolved deaths of Hollywood's Golden Age. To see the complete list of contributors, visit disgracelandpod.com/badlands. Grudzień, 1935. Aktor Charley Chase tego poranka przeglądał pocztę. Jak to bywało w okresie świątecznym, napływały kartki z życzeniami. Jedna z nich wyróżniała się szczególnie. „Wesołych Świąt i szczęśliwego Nowego Roku, Charlie. Thelma Todd”. Death in Paradise: An Illustrated History of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner :Brad SchreiberUnnatural celebrity deaths and unnaturally celebrated murders pockmark the history of Los Angeles, looming as large in the public imagination as the Hollywood stars themselves. Death in Paradise is the first authorized history of the Los Angeles Coroner's Office, revisiting the most culturally significant and forensically complex cases of accidental death, suicide or murder of the famous. It documents the notorious deaths of Senator Robert Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Sharon Tate, Janis Joplin and many others, providing an unflinching view of Tinseltown's dark, even perverse underbelly.Brad Schreiber, who wrote the original hardcover for book packager Tony Blanche, has updated many of the fascinating cases in Death in Paradise and added new photographs for this e-book edition. Schreiber, who created the truTV series North Mission Road inspired by this book, also presents some of the lesser-known but most puzzling deaths in the history of Hollywood. Did 1930s comedy film star Thelma Todd accidentally die of carbon monoxide poisoning in her own garage, commit suicide or was she killed by the jealous lover who locked her out of her own house? Death in Paradise highlights the bizarre as well as the renowned. There's the story of a funhouse dummy that got broken during a TV show filming, only to reveal the mummy of a Wild West gunslinger underneath. Or how about the murderer of a woman who was caught, based upon the ingredients in the exotic cocktail found in his victim's stomach? In addition to these mind-bending investigations, Death in Paradise summarizes the surprising origins of early historical medical examiners, the development of forensic science and, of course, the rise of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner, the most technologically advanced in the world…and the only one with its own gift shop.Buy the book https://amzn.to/465hEb8This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

We're going to pause on interviewing the PAGE Award-winning screenwriter series to bring you the latest on the Thelma Todd murder mystery we talked about last December. If you haven't listened to the two-part episode called Thelma Todd's Inexplicable Death In Hollywood's Golden Age, I highly recommend you go back and listen. The episodes aired on December 4th and 11th of 2022. Of all the screenwriter crime stories we have discussed on The Writers' Hangout, the Thelma Todd story is the one people comment about most. So, we put together a panel, including a Forensic death investigator, Kyle Finney, a True Crime fanatic JudyTrueCrime, and co-host Terry Sampson. We discuss the case through the lens of modern-day forensics and give our opinions on what happened.

In 1935, Thelma Todd was one of Hollywood's most sought after actresses. When she was dead in her car, initially carbon monoxide poisoning was to blame. But that didn't explain the bruising and blood on her face. Todd had a very interesting love life with several people who could've wanted her dead. Today we are joined by a very special guest, Cameron Esposito, to talk all things comedy and true crime! It's the perfect mashup of worlds. Ash takes us through the Thelma Todd case from Thelma's childhood in Massachusetts to when the young ✨Hollywood✨ starlet was discovered dead in her own car. Together we wonder what a car is exactly, why the Hollywood machine is so scary and whether we are prepared to be found paradoxically undressed. Thanks so much to Cameron for joining us! One of the great historical Hollywood mysteries, still unsolved, revolves around the death of silver screen comedienne Thelma Todd. She was found dead in her car on December 16th, 1935, killed by carbon monoxide poisoning according to the Los Angeles coroner. But rumors have circulated for decades that she was murdered, with suspects that have included her live-in boyfriend Roland West, ex-husband Pat DiCicco, and even New York mobster Charles "Lucky" Luciano. My guest today is Pat Jenning, who along with co-author Marshall Croddy authored the book, "Testimony of a Death: Thelma Todd: Mystery, Media and Myth in 1935 Los Angeles". He's here to present the facts of the case, and help separate fact from fiction.
