HOW WOULD FREE TRADER REAGAN RECOGNIZE THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION?  1/8 Reagan: His Life and Legend Hardcover – September 10, 2024 by  Max Boot  (Author) 1983 Afghanistan https://www.amazon.com/Reagan-Life-Legend-Max-Boot/dp/0871409445 The story begins not in star-studded Hollywood but in the cradle of the Midwest, small-town Illinois, where Reagan was born in 1911 to Nelle Clyde Wilson, a devoted Disciples of Christ believer, and Jack Reagan, a struggling, alcoholic salesman. Boot vividly creates a portrait of a handsome young man, indeed a much-vaunted lifeguard, whose early successes mirrored those of Horatio Alger. And contextualizing Reagan's life against American history, Boot re-creates the world in which Reagan transitioned from local Iowa sportscaster to budding screen actor. The world of Hollywood from the 1930s to the 1950s would prove significant, not only in Reagan's coming-of-age in such classics as Knute Rockne and Kings Row but during the twilight of his film career, when he played opposite a chimpanzee in Bedtime for Bonzo, and then his eventual emergence as a television host of General Electric Theater, which established his bona fides as one of the leading conservative voices of the time. Indeed, the leap to California governor in 1966 seemed almost preordained, in which Reagan became a bellwether for a nation in the throes of a generational shift. Reagan's 1980 presidential election augured a shift that continues into this century. Boot writes not as a partisan but as a historian seeking to set the story straight. He explains how Reagan was an ideologue but also a supreme pragmatist who signed pro-abortion and gun control bills as governor, cut deals with Democrats in both Sacramento and Washington, and befriended Mikhail Gorbachev to end the Cold War. A master communicator, Reagan revived America's spirits after the traumas of Vietnam and Watergate. But Boot also shows how Reagan was armored in obliviousness. He traces Reagan's opposition to civil rights over forty years, reveals how he neglected the exploding AIDS epidemic, and details how America experienced a level of income inequality not seen since the Gilded Age. June 17, 1980 is the first date in Led Zeppelin's Tour Over Europe, and on that date we find the band in Dortmund. They come out of the gate with something to prove, and they deliver. The show opens with an intense and dangerous Train Kept A Rollin' followed without a breath by Nobody's Fault But Mine, which now is truncated as the intro guitar is eliminated going right into the song. I like it. The Rain Song is perfection as it usually is with Bonzo bringing fury and bombast, which will diminish tragically as the tour progresses.

In this episode we're joined by music-biz legend Danny Goldberg to discuss his dealings with Led Zeppelin and Kurt Cobain — and the school days he spent with the great Gil Scott-Heron. Danny takes us back to his short-lived stint at Berkeley and his first port of call on returning to his native New York: clerking at trade bible Billboard, a job that led to the publication of his report on 1969's Woodstock festival. From there we jump to the three years our guest spent working for Led Zep — first as their press agent, then as V-P of their label Swan Song. We revisit the band's conquest and domination of '70s America and hear hair-raising tales of Page, Plant, Bonzo, Peter Grant and Richard Cole... as well as Danny's 1976 exit from the band's dark vortex. The story of how Nirvana came to be managed by Danny's company Gold Mountain prompts thoughts on Kurt Cobain and mention of the 2019 memoir (Serving the Servant) our guest wrote about him. Danny brings his management and record-label story up to date by previewing the new album by his clients the Waterboys. The week's new audio interview takes us back to the '60s and to Danny's reminiscences of the young Gil Scott-Heron, who can be heard talking in 1978 to Mark "Radio Pete" Bliesener. The second of two clips — about Richard Nixon — brings us to the shocking present moment of Donald Trump's and Elon Musk's unprecedented assault on American democracy. After a tribute to the departed Marianne Faithfull — heard talking about the brilliant Broken English album in a short audio clip from 2014 — Jasper quotes from a 2023 Simon Reynolds article about A.I. and music journalism. Pieces discussed: Woodstock: Peace Mecca, Led Zeppelin: Under The Hood – A Backstage Chronicle of the Historic 1975 Tour, Led Zeppelin: Danny Goldberg's Hideaway, Danny Goldberg: Serving the Servant – Remembering Kurt Cobain (Ecco), Gil Scott-Heron audio (1978), Growing Up With Gil Scott-Heron: In Loving Memory, Marianne Faithfull audio (2014) and I'm a Noted Music Critic. This week, we're sharing another presentation from the 2024 ACABookfair in so-called Asheville. On youtube you'll find the audio sync'd up with the slideshow presentation from the bookfair by visiting youtube.com/@thefinalstrawradio. The following is a recording from the 2024 Another Carolina Anarchist Bookfair in so-called Asheville, NC. You can find more info and recordings from this and other years at ACABookfair.NoBlogs.Org. This is a presentation entitled Art as a Vehicle for Anarchist Ideas with N.O. Bonzo, Des Revol, and Sugarbombing World. From the description: “Three longtime anarchist artists—N.O. Bonzo, Des Revol, and Sugarbombing World—will explore the role that art plays in resistance and movements, along with remembrance of the past and visions of the future. They'll look at ways that art brings people together, and can serve as a great tool, whether in organizing and agitating, and/or inviting people into anarchism.”

I was led to this show by a thread on Royal Orleans (a Zep fan site) in which someone wrote a brilliant essay about 1980 and how it deserves another look, as it's not all dysfunction, addiction, and flat performances. I've gotten to the point where I'd say at least half the 1980 Tour over Europe is pretty damn good, even great. June 20, 1980 the band played Brussels and they completely knocked it out of the park. It's interesting to hear Jimmy's newer 'vocabulary' in his playing. Trampled Underfoot is crazy good, Since I've Been Loving You (not often a high point on this tour) is brilliant, with some nice syncopation and interplay between Jonesy, Jimmy, and Bonzo. It's mature and intelligent and cogent. I am absolutely gobsmacked at how my 1980 bias kept me from hearing the beauty in these early 1980 shows. After SIBLY I play a rock solid version of Whole Lotta Love which brings the old and the new together in a flurry of improvisation. Lots of Jimmy/Robert back and forth. It's good. You'll like it.

8/8 Reagan: His Life and Legend Hardcover – September 10, 2024  by  Max Boot  (Author) 1983 Afghanistan https://www.amazon.com/Reagan-Life-Legend-Max-Boot/dp/0871409445 The story begins not in star-studded Hollywood but in the cradle of the Midwest, small-town Illinois, where Reagan was born in 1911 to Nelle Clyde Wilson, a devoted Disciples of Christ believer, and Jack Reagan, a struggling, alcoholic salesman. With its revelatory insights, Reagan: His Life and Legend is no apologia, depicting a man with a good-versus-evil worldview derived from his moralistic upbringing and Hollywood westerns. Providing fresh examinations of “trickle-down economics,” the Cold War's end, the Iran-Contra affair, as well as a nuanced portrait of Reagan's family, this definitive biography is as compelling a presidential biography as any in recent decades.

In this chat, Yvonne talks about Neil's philosphy of life and language, his risk-taking and what it was like to be around art-schools in the sixties as a new wave of comedians and musicians started to change the world. She also discusses her own "pro good-things, anti bad-things" stance, her and Neil's relationship to finance and how these things can affect art and creativity. Bonzo is the star of this show. Led Zeppelin in St. Paul, Minnesota July, 9, 1973 is a top tier NA 1973 show. Jimmy and Jonesy are on fire, but John Bonham is head and shoulders above them this night. He plays stuff I've not heard before, adding complexity to Heartbreaker and ingenuity to No Quarter and, and bombastic fire to Whole Lotta Love. The band playing at full tilt reminds one of a cheetah running at top speed in pursuit of prey. Absolute beauty and grace. I must confess, I have covered this show before (Ep. 206) but this recording is a brand new remaster by Dario Romero, and it's totally worth the repeat performance. The only repeated song is No Quarter, and it's totally worth the additional listen.

This is an incredible recording from Saint Mike Millard on his blessed Nakamichi, of Led Zeppelin at the LA Forum on March 27, 1975. This is one of the legendary marathon shows, running more than 3 hours, in gorgeous full stereo. This is a fresh transfer made by JEMS and lightly mastered by DADGAD. It's a keeper for sure. I play a funky Over The Hills and Far Away and glorious improvisational No Quarter for us, as a taster for the full show, which is available below. Jonesy and Bonzo are perfectly synced in this amazing recording. You'll dig it.

Led Zeppelin's 1973 European tour is generally considered to be the instrumental peak of the band, with Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones locked in tighter than ever, and playing with breakneck speed. This performance is from Hamburg on March 21, 1973 and is a lovely remastered merge of the 2nd gen audience recording, and the clean as a whistle soundboard (Dazed, Stairway, and Whole Lotta Love only) to present a complete concert experience with best possible fidelity. All this is courtesy of the legendary dadgad. I play a sublime Since I've Been Loving You and then a Dazed and Confused which is a contender for best ever. It's brilliant. As Luis Rey says, you've heard it all before, but never this perfectly. Bonzo. Goddamn. So good. So so good.

And that's exactly what Matt Sorum, drummer for Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver and The Cult, is and more. Matt joined us to speak about the many dogs he's cared for over his adult life including past dogs Drac (Labrador), Anya (German Shepherd), Miles, Lola and Bowie (Frenchies) and current Frenchies Ella and recently adopted Bonzo. This is an absolutely delightful 1975 Led Zeppelin concert. 2/12/75 in New York City we hear an excellent audience recording from Jerry Moore, who made a great recording. Jimmy is pretty on top of his game, broken finger notwithstanding. Robert is in great spirits, and Jonesy and Bonzo are locked in tighter than a tourniquet. We hear Sick Again (super tight and Robert has a good time), Over the Hills (super awesome with a unique solo from Jimmy with him stretching out with some great licks). We finish up with a badass performance of Kashmir. Sounds like the Les Paul to me, too, so it's extra meaty. Jimmy has some really nice riffs and licks in this. The wings are still wet on this song, so it's nice to hear them groove around a little as they work out the final form.

We meet again! That's right, the entire gang has reassembled (in person!) for our penultimate episode focusing on a movie titled something that, quite frankly, could have doubled as another name for this podcast; Going Bananas. Follow along as we immerse ourselves in the smorgasbord that is the Canon Film's back catalog by absorbing this 1987 fever dream featuring the voice of Munchie himself, Dom DeLuise and…a man…in a monkey suit. One thing this show has always been, consistently, is a wild ride and this is no exception. Join us before we stroll off into the sunset by discussing safari tours, conmen, food fights, the circus, imposter clowns and a talking primate played, again… by a man…in a monkey suit. Or is it an ape? Does it even matter? I'm sure it matters to Bonzo. Isn't that what really counts? Alright, enough of this monkey business, let's go! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bmoviebreakdown/support
