Welcome back to Drummers on Drumming, a podcast powered by Big Fat Snare Drum. Terry Keating of the Bonzolium YouTube channel joins the show for a deep, hilarious, and wildly passionate dive into the world of John Bonham. This is a re-airing of an older episode that originally centered around five less obvious Bonzo tracks. And yes, we do get there. But with Terry, the joy is in the detours. This conversation moves through Bonham's feel, the mystery of his gear, Led Zeppelin's live chemistry, the obsession around Ludwig drums and Paiste cymbals, the difference between human time and perfect time, and why Bonzo still feels almost impossible to fully explain. Terry is one of my favorite sources for anything Bonham-related. He brings the kind of energy that makes you want to go back and listen to Led Zeppelin with fresh ears. In this episode, we talk about: • Why The Song Remains the Same was Terry's gateway into Bonham• Bonham's swing, feel, and natural sense of time• Why Zeppelin likely never needed a modern click-track mindset• The difference between human time and quantized perfection• Why Bonham felt like the conductor of Led Zeppelin• The strange magic behind Bonham's snare sound• Why drummers are still obsessed with his exact gear• Ludwig, Paiste, 26-inch bass drums, and the mystery of the 15-inch depth• Terry's friend George Fludas and the art of playing Bonham correctly• The “Bonham engine” and why his physical approach still feels unique• Five deeper Bonzo tracks, including:• “I'm Gonna Crawl”• “In the Light”• “Darlene”• “No Quarter” live• “Dazed and Confused” live This one is loose, nerdy, funny, and full of the kind of Bonzo talk only true Zeppelin heads can provide. It's a great show with multiple sources, and I play Celebration Day from the soundboard, and Heartbreaker and Whole Lotta Love from the Source 1 Audience tape. It's a fun show with a wild audience. Robert leads all 15,000 people in a round of Happy Birthday for Bonzo, and we go from there. Good stuff.

We have been blessed not once but twice in the last week by, first, a lovely close stereo stage mic'ed recording of Tangerine from 9/24/71 (which I covered last week). This one includes stage banter and it's absolutely lovely. Then a few days later Led Zeppelin Boots drops a truly incredible holy shit rehearsal of Since I've Been Loving You from May 1980. I know. But it's ridiculously great. Tight but loose. Bonzo sounds incredible as does Jimmy. Jimmy sticks every landing in this insanely sophisticated rendition. My gasts are flabbered. It's so so good.

When The Wolf saw that Jason Bonham was bringing his Led Zeppelin Evening to town he was interested but a little skeptical. Though John Bonham's oldest child is now a grandfather himself with four decades of experience, I didn't know what kind of show it would be. Turns out not only has Jason assembled an incredible band that can truly do justice to Led Zeppelin classics but Jason gives us a glimpse into his brief time with his dad. As MC between songs, Bonham helps keep the crowd loose with his laid back persona and sly humor which keeps the fans engaged. Sharing stories about John and also fanboying with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant (they had to limit him to 2 Zeppelin questions a day during the Celebration Day rehearsals) give the audience what they want - direct connection to the men who made this incredible music. And the band are fantastic. James Dylan (Vocals, acoustic) can hit some of those classic Plant notes while Alex Howland provides part of the John Paul Jones roll on keys and acoustic. The other half is Dorian Heartsong on bass/mandolin - all of them are brilliant players. But Jimmy Sakurai has taken on the essence of Jimmy Page with his hair, clothing, movements and equipment. He not only looks the part but he's got the tracks down and it makes for a fun night of Led Zeppelin - a night where they celebrate Physical Graffiti at 50 by playing the whole thing! After Custard Pie and The Rover, they played the songs out of order with Jason dipping in and out to share his own stories of learning to love Led Zeppelin and other music of his generation (Stewart Copeland is way better than you Dad!). During the acoustic set they all sit on the drum riser and Jason tells us why they used to give Bonzo a tambourine for the acoustic Zep sets. From there they build to a crescendo using all the power the 1975 double album had to offer, ending with one John Bonham co-wrote by telling Jimmy dunna-dunna dun, click, dunna-dunna dun, click, dunna-dunna dun, click, dunna-dunna dun. We return to the well for a third time (the last 2 being 5 years ago) with Led Zeppelin in Detroit, July 13, 1973 with an amazing, blazing show. I play a beautiful Since I've Been Loving You along with a powerful twofer of Heartbreaker into Whole Lotta Love. There's a lot of funk involved and Jimmy, Jonesy, and Bonzo are in the zone the entire time. A good one.

This is a show I covered in a two parter about 5 years ago. Led Zeppelin in Cleveland, Ohio on April 28, 1977. I'm revisiting it now because it's an amazing show, worthy of another listen. The band is on and the power and mystery are on display. Bonzo seems locked in a little tighter, Jonesy seems a bit more front and center, and it makes for a glorious show. I play The Song Remains the Same, Achilles Last Stand, and a rare encore performance of Trampled Underfoot. This is a fantastic gig and a very nice recording.

HOW WOULD FREE TRADER REAGAN RECOGNIZE THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION? 8/8 Reagan: His Life and Legend Hardcover – September 10, 2024 by  Max Boot  (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Reagan-Life-Legend-Max-Boot/dp/0871409445 The story begins not in star-studded Hollywood but in the cradle of the Midwest, small-town Illinois, where Reagan was born in 1911 to Nelle Clyde Wilson, a devoted Disciples of Christ believer, and Jack Reagan, a struggling, alcoholic salesman. Boot vividly creates a portrait of a handsome young man, indeed a much-vaunted lifeguard, whose early successes mirrored those of Horatio Alger. And contextualizing Reagan's life against American history, Boot re-creates the world in which Reagan transitioned from local Iowa sportscaster to budding screen actor. The world of Hollywood from the 1930s to the 1950s would prove significant, not only in Reagan's coming-of-age in such classics as Knute Rockne and Kings Row but during the twilight of his film career, when he played opposite a chimpanzee in Bedtime for Bonzo, and then his eventual emergence as a television host of General Electric Theater, which established his bona fides as one of the leading conservative voices of the time. Indeed, the leap to California governor in 1966 seemed almost preordained, in which Reagan became a bellwether for a nation in the throes of a generational shift. Reagan's 1980 presidential election augured a shift that continues into this century. Boot writes not as a partisan but as a historian seeking to set the story straight. He explains how Reagan was an ideologue but also a supreme pragmatist who signed pro-abortion and gun control bills as governor, cut deals with Democrats in both Sacramento and Washington, and befriended Mikhail Gorbachev to end the Cold War. A master communicator, Reagan revived America's spirits after the traumas of Vietnam and Watergate. But Boot also shows how Reagan was armored in obliviousness. He traces Reagan's opposition to civil rights over forty years, reveals how he neglected the exploding AIDS epidemic, and details how America experienced a level of income inequality not seen since the Gilded Age. 1904 SAN JOSE

Eylem mentions Bianet and Birgun as good places to get introduced to ongoing news from leftists in Turkey. Then, a chat with no Bonzo, anarchist historian, printmaker and artist, about how they developed their art, the historical work they do and some upcoming projects. June 17, 1980 is the first date in Led Zeppelin's Tour Over Europe, and on that date we find the band in Dortmund. They come out of the gate with something to prove, and they deliver. The show opens with an intense and dangerous Train Kept A Rollin' followed without a breath by Nobody's Fault But Mine, which now is truncated as the intro guitar is eliminated going right into the song. I like it. The Rain Song is perfection as it usually is with Bonzo bringing fury and bombast, which will diminish tragically as the tour progresses.

Bonzo, Des Revol, and Sugarbombing World—will explore the role that art plays in resistance and movements, along with remembrance of the past and visions of the future. They'll look at ways that art brings people together, and can serve as a great tool, whether in organizing and agitating, and/or inviting people into anarchism.”

With its revelatory insights, Reagan: His Life and Legend is no apologia, depicting a man with a good-versus-evil worldview derived from his moralistic upbringing and Hollywood westerns. Providing fresh examinations of “trickle-down economics,” the Cold War's end, the Iran-Contra affair, as well as a nuanced portrait of Reagan's family, this definitive biography is as compelling a presidential biography as any in recent decades.

6/8 Reagan: His Life and Legend Hardcover – September 10, 2024  by  Max Boot  (Author)  1981 Inauguration Speech https://www.amazon.com/Reagan-Life-Legend-Max-Boot/dp/0871409445 The story begins not in star-studded Hollywood but in the cradle of the Midwest, small-town Illinois, where Reagan was born in 1911 to Nelle Clyde Wilson, a devoted Disciples of Christ believer, and Jack Reagan, a struggling, alcoholic salesman.
