In this Universal 1934 Studios Year by Year episode, we discuss the original There's Always Tomorrow, starring Frank Morgan and Binnie Barnes (remade by Douglas Sirk in the 50s with Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck) and the bizarre Claude Rains vehicle The Man Who Reclaimed His Head. The middle-class American nuclear families of the 30s and 50s curiously converge, and future Hollywood Ten screenwriter Samuel Ornitz tries to reclaim his mind from the studio heads (or so we irresponsibly conjecture). And in Fear and Moviegoing, we briefly discuss Bitter Rice, a feminist/Marxist/crime/erotic/neorealist melodrama directed by Giuseppe De Santis. EPISODE 142 -  “LUCILLE BREMER: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 6/01/2026  One of those fascinating “what happened to her?” MGM stories is LUCILLE BREMER. Bremer was an elegant redheaded dancer who MGM clearly thought was going to be their next big musical star after ELEANOR POWELL had stepped away. She had the glamour, the dancing ability, the carriage… she looked like she belonged in Technicolor. However, her career lasted only a few short years, and during that time, she worked with visionary talents like VINCENTE MINNELLI and ARTHUR FREED. She danced with FRED ASTAIRE at the absolute height of his artistry. She appeared in Technicolor spectacles that later generations would rediscover and celebrate. She shone so brightly in films during the 1940s, but then, like a shooting star in the night sky, she just vanished. So just what happened to this talented actress? We'll find out as we honor LUCILLE BREMER as our June Star of the Month. SHOW NOTES:  Sources: “Actress Lucille Bremer: From Broadway Lights to La Jolla Shores,” January 17, 2025, by Debbie L. Today we've got a 1944 broadcast featuring Fanny Brice as Baby Snooks and the Wizard of Oz himself, Frank Morgan. They partnered together for a short time on Maxwell House Coffee Time, a condensed half-hour comedy/variety show. This version comes from an Armed Forces Radio Service recording, so instead of the original commercials, you'll hear music filling those breaks, the way it went out to the troops during the war. This is a direct disc transfer, with no restoration, so it is a little scratchy. The show itself is classic Snooks chaos. Frank Morgan spins some wild stories about his “inventions,” while Snooks does everything she can to keep her poor father from getting a moment of peace. Adapted by Preston Sturges from Ferenc Molnár's play and directed by William Wyler, The Good Fairy (1935) is a screwball fairy tale built on mistaken identities, comic misfortune, and the peculiar moral logic of someone who genuinely wants to do good but hasn't quite figured out how the world works.  Luisa (Margaret Sullavan) has grown up knowing nothing of the world outside the orphanage walls. When she's finally released into Budapest society, she proves as well-meaning as she is naïve — and as prone to catastrophe as she is to kindness. A chance encounter with the wealthy and lecherous Konrad (Frank Morgan) sets off a chain of complications, chief among them the lie that she's already married. The problem is that she isn't, but she soon will be — to a bookish, bearded lawyer named Dr. Sporum (Herbert Marshall) who has no idea any of this is happening. The film showcases the range of Margaret Sullavan's screen presence — radiant and funny and heartbreaking in equal measure — alongside Frank Morgan's gloriously stammering comic turn. The episode also looks at the 1947 remake I'll Be Yours, starring Deanna Durbin, and the 1951 Broadway musical adaptation Make a Wish, with music by Hugh Martin and a book co-written by Sturges and Abe Burrows.Mike talks with co-hosts Rahne Alexander and Federico Bertolini about Molnár, Wyler, Sturges, and the many lives of a very good fairy.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

Today we're bringing you the first in a series of interviews John did with personalities who were instrumental in the great old time radio revival of the 1970s and beyond. John sat down with Harvey Tow (better known to L.A. radio fans as Cousin Zeno) for a look back at his decades in vintage radio. Harvey talks about getting his start as a collector in the mid-'60s, hosting on stations like KCSN Northridge through the '70s and '80s, and how he managed to rescue a set of Lux Radio Theatre rehearsal discs straight from a former engineer. One of those recordings, The Pied Piper starring Frank Morgan, is featured in this episode. Along the way, Harvey shares memories of meeting legends like Bill Conrad and Roddy McDowall. EPISODE 117 -  “STEVE AND NAN DISCUSS: MOVIES ABOUT MOVIES” - 12/08/25  In the latest episode of From Beneath the Hollywood Sign, we pull back the curtain on the cinematic world of making movies about… making movies. We dive deep into the movies that reveal what really happens behind the scenes in Tinseltown—sometimes with affection, sometimes as a cautionary tale to be careful what you wish for. Movies like Sullivan's Travels (1941), Singin' in the Rain (1952), and Sunset Boulevard (1950), all offer a fascinating look at the machinations that go into making films. This week, we'll be discussing six lesser known moves that five us a peak behind the scenes and show us very different sides of the not-always-so-glamorous ways that Hollywood works. Across genres and generations, these films offer an insider's view not just of how Hollywood works, but of the dreams, delusions, and dramas that make moviemaking an art form all its own. EPISODE 95 -  “VIRGINIA GREY: Classic Cinema Star of the Month” - 7/07/25 If VIRGINIA GREY is remembered at all, the blue-eyed, blonde-haired beauty is probably best remembered as the caustic perfume counter girl in The Women (1939), who sees right through the gold-digging ways of Crystal Allen, played by JOAN CRAWFORD. In these brief scenes, she is so charismatic and saucy, she really shows how to deliver a zinger of a line. She may also be remembered as the good luck charm of producer ROSS HUNTER, who put her in many of his popular movies of the mid-1950s and 1960s. But there was so much more to this talented actress. This week, we explore her life and career as we honor her as our Star of the Month.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: “Virginia Grey, a Veteran of 100 moves, dies at 87,” August 6, 2003, New York Times; Robert Taylor: The Man WIth the Perfect Profile (1973), by Jane Ellen Wayne; “The Girl Who Won Gable Back,” November 1951, by Linda Griffin, Modern Screen magazine; “An Interview With Virginia Grey,” by Mike Fitzgerald, www.westernclippings.com; “Virginia Grey,” briansdriveintheater.com; Wikipedia.com; TCM.com; IBDB.com; IMDBPro.com; Movies Mentioned:  The Women (1939), starring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, & Rosalind Russell; Uncle Tom's Cabin (1927), starring James B. Based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, it was primarily directed by Victor Fleming, who left production to take over the troubled Gone with the Wind. It stars Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Billie Burke, and Margaret Hamilton. Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson, and Edgar Allan Woolf received credit for the screenplay, while others made uncredited contributions. The music was composed by Harold Arlen and adapted by Herbert Stothart, with lyrics by Edgar "Yip" Harburg. Wicked (titled onscreen as Wicked Part I) is a 2024 American musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu, and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, with songs by Stephen Schwartz. It is the first installment of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name based on the 1995 novel, which in turn is based on the Oz books and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. A NEW PERFORMANCE BY MORGAN BASSICHISWITH ORIGINAL MATERIAL BY FRANK MAYADIRECTED BY SAM PINKLETONMUSICAL RECREATIONS BY NATASHA JACOBSSCENIC RECREATION BY ELI WOODS HARRISONOctober 25–26, 2024In a desperate attempt to prove they can think about someone other than themself, Morgan Bassichis revisits queer comedian, musician, and performance artist Frank Maya's 1987 show, Frank Maya Talks. Maya was among the “first out gay comedians on network television” and on the precipice of mainstream success before his death from AIDS-related complications in 1995. This new “solo” performance humbly attempts to ensure Maya's legacy is no longer overlooked while also resolving the bottomless queer search for laughter in times of crisis and for fame and father figures and intense attachment dynamics no matter how fleeting.https://www.morganbassichis.com/ MORGAN BASSICHIS (They/Them) is a comedian, musician, and writer who has been called “a tall child or, well, a big bird” by The Nation and “fiercely hilarious” by The New Yorker. Their past performances include A Crowded Field (Abrons Arts Center, 2023), Questions to Ask Beforehand (Bridget Donahue, 2022), Don't Rain On My Bat Mitzvah (co-created with Ira Khonen Temple, Creative Time, 2021), Nibbling the Hand that Feeds Me (Whitney Museum, NYC, 2019), Klezmer for Beginners (co-created with Ethan Philbrick, Abrons Arts Center, NYC, 2019), Damned If You Duet (The Kitchen, NYC, 2018), More Protest Songs! The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical fantasy film produced by MGM. An adaptation of L. Frank Baum's 1900 children's fantasy novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the film was primarily directed by Victor Fleming, who left at nearly the end of production to take over the troubled Gone with the Wind. It stars Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Billie Burke, and Margaret Hamilton. The music was composed by Harold Arlen and adapted by Herbert Stothart, with lyrics by Edgar "Yip" Harburg. One of the most iconic films of all time, it is remembered for its use of Technicolor, fantasy storytelling, music, and characters.
