Fawn and Matt break out all their dictionaries and read all the definitions of friendship and have a good laugh. Then THEY break it down for real. Fawn feels a kinship, like a family type feeling about certain people, to which Matt says they are not friends because they don’t even know you! Fawn says we're all connected, at the risk of sounding way too woo woo. So yeah, this person doesn't know I exist perhaps, but they've touched my life profoundly. And because they touched my life, I shared how they touched my life with my close friends and so they also get touched and changed because of this person. Do they (the person that hasn’t met us) know how they changed lives? When I tell other people about this person and it changes their life, it's a ripple effect. My idea of friendship is getting a little bit more fluid, especially in the time of 2020, and the fact that we can't be together. Before 2020, our criteria was that to have a substantial friendship, you had to be together within a close proximity and not on social media, but in real life. What are we going to do? How can we define it? Are we growing as friends? Are we growing together towards something? Matt: I'm still gonna take the hard line and say, there's a mystical connection that happens when you're physically present; physically adjacent to one another. Fawn talks about how sometimes all she has is a tree to lean on… “I'm just saying, I'm trying to get it (the support of a friendly force) wherever I can find it. And if you think about it spiritually, you're never alone. There's always, you're a part of everything. Everything is a part of you. You have to broaden your scope.” Fawn and Matt totally disagree about what a friendship is. Fawns point: it is about connection. You have to recognize the connection. So when you are in a physical friendship situation, you can say, yeah, this is the connection. You have to look for it, even though you're locked down. Well, if you want to talk about it, as far as it feeling like you have to exercise those muscles, you have to exercise attention to the feelings. You need to have those feelings to live. It's like water and air. You need those feelings. And I'm saying to you sometimes you're in solitary mode and you need to have those feelings, first of all, within yourself. You have to be your own friend. You have to recognize happiness within yourself and not from the outside world. And that's key to friendship. You have to have that knowledge. You have to have that expertise about the feeling of friendship when you meet other people. It will enhance everything because you know that feeling, you know that dance, and you can pick it out from the ether. THEN A MIRACLE HAPPENS! Fawn convinces Matt to shift his view! Matt: Friendship has to have a component of effort. There is no passivity in friendship. Leave a review on iTunes to be eligible to win a print from Fawn's coffee table book. Why And How To Create A Safety Culture In Your Dental Practice

Talking with the Toothcop

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 19, 2019 25:54

Every year fines are levied against well-meaning, hard-working individuals in dental practices all across the country. Nobody wants to do things that put their staff members or patients at risk, yet these safety infractions keep happening. Why? It’s not because rules and regulations change, it’s because the practices that ensure safety in the dental office slip over time. It’s an issue of not effectively creating a safety culture. On this episode, I’m chatting with Andrea about the most recent years of OSHA violations, going item by item through the violations to point out how and why they happened. We wrap up with some tips and strategies about how you can create something bigger than a commitment to enforcing the rules - you can and should create a safety culture among your team. It's way more powerful. There’s not a Dentist alive who wants to put people at risk Nobody would even suggest that Dentists are overlooking safety issues because they don’t care. Every Dentist I know cares deeply about their patients and their staff. So what is it that causes offices across the country to be fined for safety violations? It’s a lack of consistent attention to the policies and procedures that keep people safe. Listen to hear what causes the average Dentist’s commitment to safety to slip in practical ways, hear our suggestions about what needs to be done to keep things on the up and up, and to understand how you can protect yourself and your office from being the next to be cited for violations. Some of the dental safety violations we see are simply paperwork There are true safety concerns among the things we note in this episode, but many of them are simply a failure to document the safety steps that have been taken in the practice. I’ll give you some examples. In many of the cases where OSHA has cited practices in the past 3 to 4 years, there were: No written blood-borne pathogen plans No proof of Hep B vaccinations No hazard communication plans No Safety Data Sheets in the workplace Do you see what I mean? In most cases, these are one-time administrative tasks that simply need to be created and made available. It’s not hard, just time consuming and tedious. The worst part is that by NOT doing something so simple, hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of fines are being levied, and patients and team members are being put at risk. A clear example of why a culture of safety is the answer In some of the instances where dental practices were cited, the infraction was a fairly simple, easy to do task that simply wasn’t being done consistently. For example, it’s still the case that many of those serving in the office are not wearing the proper eye protection for the task they are performing. Still, others are not using other forms of PPE. This is not a rule problem - it’s a culture problem. It’s sometimes harder to fix safety issues of a cultural nature but when you do, the slips tend to go away. Listen to find out how we suggest you go about creating a culture of safety in your practice. A culture of safety begins with the leader I’m convinced that every Dentist wants their team and their patients to be safe from blood or body fluid-borne pathogens. The same holds true when it comes to exposure to hazardous materials or radiation in the dental office. If that’s true, then the primary motivator for creating a culture of safety is already in place. Dentists simply don’t know how to practically apply what they already believe. Don’t think of this as an issue where you need to be the bad guy or bring the hammer down. It’s not that at all. What you need to think of is communicating your heart to your team, your desire to see EVERY team member and EVERY patient cared for in a safe manner. That will matter to your team because it demonstrates that you are in it for them. From there, you speak practically about what that concern motivates you to do (follow the prescribed guidelines for safety and ensure your team does too). Your team is smart, they’ll make the connection and get on board. Then THEY will be part of your culture of safety. Then, and only then, you implement your no-toleration policy regarding adherence to the safety rules that have been established. Safety problems don’t typically happen because the rules change, they happen because attitudes and diligence change - when they shouldn’t. Listen, to learn more. Outline of This Episode [0:22] Creating a culture of safety in your office [2:10] How active is OSHA in the dental industry? Not very. It’s [5:59] What are the violations OSHA Is citing for? Last full day of BGG.con. Last day at all, really, since tomorrow I check out of the hotel & head to my airport terminal/gate around noon. Apparently the Library will be closed. Though I have a few games of my own on-hand, it may not work out for me to play any games. Might just be saying my goodbyes and having last conversations with friends.Today, though, started & ended (for me) with big events. At the start of the day was the Flea Market. Greg had 4+ tubs of games to sell there, and I got to be his assistant. We were up relatively early (alarm clock required) in order to set up in the hour before the doors were opened to buyers. Then THEY have one hour to shop, haggle, and purchase before everything has to be closed up again. The end of the day had the "closing ceremonies" for BGG.con, including lots of well-earned thank-yous, prize giveaways, and some announcements for BGG.con's future. You've probably seen this already. In addition to BGG.con (which will continue unchanged for next year & beyond, when I hope to return), they've now added BGG
