Do you know what a bone age is? If you've ever found yourself spiraling over early puberty headlines or wondering if plastic cups and lavender lotion are harming your child's hormones this episode is for you. I'm joined by Dr. Sarah Hart Unger, a pediatric endocrinologist, mom of three, and co-host of the Best of Both Worlds and Best Laid Plans podcasts. Together, we cut through the confusion and misinformation around early puberty, endocrine disruptors, and what's actually backed by science. We dive into: What early puberty actually looks like including what's normal vs. concerning, the difference between true puberty and adrenal changes, and when to seek evaluation. Real vs. rumored causes like the roles of body fat, genetics, and endocrine disruptors like BPA and lavender without spiraling into fear or guilt. When medical treatment is needed, when reassurance is enough, and why chasing puberty “delays” can sometimes do more harm than good. Some of the “normal” things we do to unwind are quietly wrecking our bodies, and alcohol might be at the top of that list. You might not realize how much the occasional glass of wine is disrupting your hormones, wrecking your sleep, and sabotaging your detox efforts until you take a closer look at the research. And once you hear what it's doing to your thyroid, testosterone, liver, and brain chemistry, it's hard to ignore. That's why I asked Dr. Erika Schwartz—a pioneer in hormone health and founder of Evolved Science—to come break it all down. In this episode, Dr. Erika explains how alcohol impacts every single hormone in your body, including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid, and even your sleep-regulating neurochemicals. She talks about how alcohol contributes to hypothyroidism, depletes your zinc and B vitamins, and accelerates aging, and why hormone replacement therapy could be life-changing (especially if you've hit your 40s and can't sleep). And we talk solutions. Like how to replace alcohol as your stress reliever, how to balance hormones safely, and what you can do right now to feel better. “The earlier you start changing your diet, cutting back on alcohol, balancing your hormones, exercising, and sleeping regularly, the more likely you are to enjoy your life.” ~ Dr. Erika Schwartz In This Episode - Dr. Erika's backstory - What alcohol does to your hormones - The hormones that are most affected by alcohol - How the body metabolizes alcohol - Liver health and alcohol - Testing for liver cirrhosis and hormone imbalances - Debunking the “one glass of wine is healthy” myth - Alcohol's negative impact on sleep quality and insulin regulation - GABA, dopamine, and why alcohol feels relaxing - Alternative ways to relax without alcohol - Progesterone and alcohol cravings (and how to fix it) - Other health issues tied to alcohol consumption Products & Resources Mentioned Bon Charge Red Light Face Mask: Get 15% off with code WENDY at https://boncharge.com Tru Energy Skincare Serum: Get a special deal at https://trytruenergy.com/wendy Chef's Foundry P600 Cookware: Find it at https://bit.ly/myersdetox Heavy Metals Quiz: Start at https://heavymetalsquiz.com About Dr. Erika Schwartz Dr. Erika Schwartz is a board-certified MD and founder of Evolved Science, a cutting-edge longevity clinic based in New York City. This week on Fat Science, Dr. Emily Cooper, Andrea Taylor, and Mark Wright revisit the critical topic of endocrine disruptors—chemicals in our environment that interfere with hormones and impact metabolism, weight, and overall health. Dr. Cooper breaks down how everyday exposures to substances like phthalates, BPA, and others can have generational effects on metabolic pathways and disease risk. The episode highlights the link between these chemicals and the rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and even cancer, while offering practical steps for minimizing exposure in daily life.Key Takeaways:Endocrine disruptors are chemicals found not only in food but in everyday items such as furniture, makeup, plastics, and baby products, making exposure widespread and difficult to avoid. These chemicals can mimic or block hormones, disrupting critical metabolic and developmental processes, with effects that may pass to future generations.Regulatory oversight in the U.S. is decreasing, with significant EPA budget cuts threatening existing screening and cleanup programs targeting endocrine-disrupting chemicals.Air quality improvements, especially through HEPA filtration, and making informed choices during preconception, pregnancy, and early childhood, can help reduce exposure.Consumer awareness, advocacy, and using resources like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) app are key strategies for individuals seeking to lower risk.Personal Stories & Practical Advice:Andrea shares the everyday struggle to find safe, affordable alternatives and the surprise of seeing improvements in metabolic hormone levels after changing air filters and reducing workplace exposures.Dr. Cooper discusses strategies to minimize risk during critical windows such as preconception and pregnancy, and emphasizes the power of informed consumer choices in driving safer product development.Resources from the episode:Environmental Working Group (EWG) resources and app for product safety ratingsU.S. EPA Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program (EDSP)PubMed for scientific research on specific chemicals (BPA, phthalates, PFAS)Connect with Dr. Emily Cooper on LinkedIn.Connect with Mark Wright on LinkedIn.Connect with Andrea Taylor on Instagram.Fat Science is a podcast on a mission to explain where our fat really comes from and why it won't go and stay away. Send us a textA blend of biology, philosophy, and history exploring how hormones and endocrine disruptors affect social behavior and society.Episode Summary: Dr. Charles Cornish-Dale discusses the decline of masculinity in modern society, linking it to falling testosterone levels, environmental endocrine disruptors, and the limitations of liberal democracy. Drawing on Francis Fukuyama's “End of History & the Last Men” and historical perspectives, Cornish-Dale argues that biological and societal factors, including diet and hormonal interventions like birth control, are reshaping male and female behaviors, with profound implications for health and social structures.About the guest: Charles Cornish-Dale, PhD is a medieval historian and anthropologist with a PhD from Oxford. His new book is, “The Last Men: Liberalism and the Death of Masculinity.”Discussion Points:Thymos & Masculinity: Cornish-Dale uses the ancient Greek concept of thymos, meaning spiritedness, to explain male drives for recognition and distinction, which he ties to testosterone-driven behaviors.Testosterone Decline: Studies like the Massachusetts Male Aging Study show a ~20% drop in male testosterone levels over 17 years, correlating with reduced reproductive health and social withdrawal.Endocrine Disruptors: Chemicals in plastics, pesticides, and soy products mimic estrogen, disrupting hormonal balance and potentially causing developmental and behavioral issues.Diet & Behavior: Historical shifts to grain-based diets, as noted by Plato, and modern plant-based trends may suppress thymos and alter hormonal profiles, impacting societal dynamics.Hormonal Contraceptives: Birth control can thin the ventromedial prefrontal cortex in women, affecting emotional regulation, especially if taken during teenage years, with potential permanent effects.Fukuyama's End of History Framework: Cornish-Dale critiques liberal democracy's inability to satisfy megalothymia (the desire to be better), contributing to a crisis of purpose for men.Related episode:M&M 193: History of Diet & Food, Population Density & Social Stability, Psychological Pandemics, Physical & Mental Health in Civilizational CyclesSupport the showAll episodes, show notes, transcripts, and more at the M&M Substack Affiliates: KetoCitra—Ketone body BHB + potassium, calcium & magnesium, formulated with kidney health in mind. This episode features an excerpt from Ruan Living's 40-Day Home Detox masterclass with renowned reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Paul Magarelli. He explains how endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs)—found in plastics, personal care products, pesticides, and air pollution—are contributing to declining sperm counts, hormone imbalances, miscarriages, and lower embryo viability. With over 1,000 known EDCs in our daily environments, Dr. Magarelli shares clinical insights into how these invisible toxicants are silently impacting fertility, IVF outcomes, and long-term child development. You'll learn: The 4 critical fertility checkpoints: sperm, egg, uterus, and fallopian tubes How EDCs impair sperm motility, DNA quality, and embryo implantation Why miscarriage rates are rising and what fecundity really means The transgenerational effects of chemical exposures on reproductive health What you can do now to support a fertile, healthy body This conversation is an urgent yet hopeful reminder that detoxing your home and reducing endocrine disruptors can make a real difference—not just for you, but for generations to come.
In this heartfelt and eye-opening conversation, Sophia Ruan Gushée is joined by her colleague and niece Elizabeth McCormick to reflect on Sophia's masterclass interview with reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Paul Magarelli (featured in Part 2). Together, they unpack the most compelling insights from Dr. Magarelli about how endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs)—found in everyday products like shampoos, perfumes, deodorants, and even conventionally grown produce—are silently impacting fertility. Topics include: What exactly are EDCs, and why should we care? The shocking decline in global fertility—over 50% in the last 50 years—and the halving of sperm counts since our grandparents' generation (as explored in Dr. Shanna Swan's book Countdown) Why awareness of EDCs is crucial for those pursuing assisted reproductive technologies (ART) The intergenerational effects of endocrine and metabolic disruption How detoxing your home can empower reproductive and generational health This episode reinforces why the efforts you make to detox your environment—like those in Ruan Living's 40-Day Home Detox—matter deeply, not just for today, but for generations to come. About Ruan Living Grounded in the philosophy of Practical Nontoxic Living™, Ruan Living offers flexible ways for you to craft your Ultimate Home Detox™ to help you elevate your health and well-being—one thoughtful choice at a time. The FDA is finally banning a few food dyes... but why are we still swallowing chemicals that Europe kicked to the curb over a decade ago? Your protein bar, your salad dressing, even your kid's cereal — they're all hiding ingredients that mess with your brain, hormones, and gut... and you probably have no idea. And here's the kicker: There are over 14,000 food additives approved for use in the U.S. — many of which have never been tested for long-term safety. So yeah, pulling Red 3 is a start… but it barely scratches the surface. As consumers, we've been left to play detective — trying to decode labels, memorize chemical aliases, and guess whether what we're eating is actually safe. So in today's episode, we're breaking it all down. What the FDA's announcement really means, why it's taken so long, and what you can do right now to stop being a food system guinea pig and start taking back control of your plate. I'm your host, Chef Mareya — chef, nutritionist, mom, food activist, and the creator of Superfood Sprinkle and EatCleaner. And today, we're peeling back the label on something that should be good news… but needs a deeper look. The FDA just announced that artificial colors — like Red 3, Yellow 5, and Blue 1 — are being phased out within the next two years. Yes, they're finally listening to the science, the petitions, and the parents who've been shouting this from the rooftops for decades. And while that's a step in the right direction, here's the truth: it's not enough. Cleaning up our food supply isn't just about removing bright red cereal dye. It's about looking at everything that's slipping into our food system — and what it's doing to our bodies. So in this episode, we're unpacking the Top 10 Food Issues You Should Actually Be Paying Attention To — with real talk, real solutions, and zero guilt. Let's dig in.

Send us a textShort Summary: How environmental chemical exposures affect neurodegenerative disease and health.About the guest: Gary Miller, PhD is a Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University. His research bridges pharmacology, toxicology, and neuroscience to explore neurodegeneration, particularly Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases.Note: Podcast episodes are fully available to paid subscribers on the M&M Substack and everyone on YouTube. Partial versions are available elsewhere. Full transcript and other information on Substack.Episode Summary: Dr. Gary Miller talks about neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, exploring their age-driven nature, early detection challenges, and environmental risk factors such as pesticide exposure and head trauma. They discuss the emerging field of exposomics—studying lifetime chemical exposures—and its potential to uncover links between pollutants, diet, and disease, while highlighting protective factors like caffeine and nicotine, and the role of technology in advancing prevention and treatment.Key Takeaways:Neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's & Alzheimer's worsen with age, but early intervention could slow progression & improve quality of life.Parkinson's symptoms often appear after significant dopamine neuron loss, but subtle signs like handwriting changes or gait issues might be detectable earlier.Environmental factors, including pesticides & air pollution, increase neurodegeneration risk, while caffeine and nicotine surprisingly lower Parkinson's incidence. The exposome—total lifetime exposure to chemicals—offers a new lens to study health, revealing how pollutants & diet interact with our biology.Ultra-processed foods & common chemicals like PFAS (in packaging) raise exposure levels, but simple steps like air filters or less processed diets can help reduce risks.Related episode:M&M #145: Epigenetics, Hormones, Endocrine Disruptors, Microplastics, Xenoestrogens, Obesogens & Obesity, Inheritance of ASupport the showAll episodes, show notes, transcripts, etc. at the M&M Substack Affiliates: Lumen device to optimize your metabolism for weight loss or athletic performance. Your house should be your safe space. But what if it's the source of your symptoms? In this solo episode of Super Life, Darin Olien uncovers the hidden poisons lurking inside your home—from cookware and furniture to cleaning products and carpets. Darin breaks down the scientific research behind common toxins like PFAS, phthalates, formaldehyde, and flame retardants, and shows you how these “fatal conveniences” may be silently disrupting your hormones, damaging your gut, and weakening your immune system. You'll walk away from this episode with practical, easy-to-implement solutions that will help you detox your environment and build a home that supports vitality, longevity, and true wellness. 1. Formaldehyde in Your Home: The Silent Threat Formaldehyde is a common indoor air pollutant found in engineered wood products, cabinetry, moldings, countertops, and furniture. It is classified as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization and has been linked to respiratory issues, asthma, and even leukemia (Zhang et al., 2020). How to Reduce Formaldehyde Exposure: Opt for solid wood furniture instead of pressed wood. Use low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints and finishes. Keep your home well-ventilated with HEPA air purifiers. 2. The Hidden Dangers of PFAS (Forever Chemicals) PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are found in non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, waterproof clothing, and even drinking water. Studies show these chemicals accumulate in the body and are linked to cancer, hormonal imbalances, immune system suppression, and reproductive toxicity (DeWitt et al., 2019). How to Reduce PFAS Exposure: Switch to cast iron or stainless steel cookware. Avoid stain-resistant treatments on carpets and furniture. Use water filters certified to remove PFAS. 3. Plastics: More Than Just an Environmental Issue Plastics release harmful chemicals like BPA (bisphenol A) and phthalates, which disrupt the endocrine system, leading to infertility, metabolic disorders, and even neurological issues (Talsness et al., 2009). How to Reduce Plastic Exposure: Use glass or stainless steel containers. Avoid microwaving food in plastic. Choose BPA-free household products. 4. Carpets: A Reservoir of Toxins and Allergens Carpets harbor SVOCs (semi-volatile organic compounds), flame retardants, and pesticides, making them a major source of indoor air pollution and allergens. Children and pets are particularly vulnerable (Cao et al., 2017). How to Reduce Carpet-Related Risks: Choose natural fiber rugs like wool or cotton. Regularly clean with a HEPA vacuum. Use non-toxic carpet cleaners. 5. Fragrances: The Airborne Toxins in Your Home Synthetic fragrances found in air fresheners, candles, cleaning products, and perfumes contain phthalates and VOCs that are linked to respiratory issues, migraines, and hormone disruption (Steinemann, 2018). How to Detox Your Home's Air: Use essential oil diffusers instead of synthetic air fresheners. Choose fragrance-free cleaning products. Improve indoor air quality with houseplants like peace lilies and spider plants. SuperLife Home Detox: Steps to Create a Healthy Living Space Switch to Non-Toxic Cleaning Products – Avoid harsh chemicals; opt for vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. Improve Ventilation – Open windows daily and use HEPA air filters. Filter Your Water – Invest in a high-quality water filtration system to remove PFAS, chlorine, and heavy metals. Avoid Toxic Furniture and Decor – Choose organic bedding, non-toxic paint, and untreated wood furniture. Ditch the Plastics – Use glass, stainless steel, or silicone alternatives for food storage and cookware. Go Green with Personal Care Products – Check labels for parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances. Conclusion The reality is, our homes can be filled with hidden toxins that impact our health in ways we don't even realize. But the good news? We have the power to change that. By making small, intentional choices—like choosing cleaner products, improving ventilation, and ditching harmful plastics—you can create a SuperLife-approved home that truly supports your well-being. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Kate: Hi there Stephen !I am a big fan of your work, your book and your podcast! All the way from australia I am working in a pharmacy, and feeling like i'm sanitising my hands, more than I probably need to. Does hand sanitiser contain Endocrine disrupters, and should I consider other options? Thanks heaps! Sonny: Hi Dr Cabral, Around 18 months ago, I noticed hair loss at the front of my hairline. I'm in good health, and the only change has been using an infrared sauna 4-5 times a week. I tried 3 PRP sessions, which helped some regrowth, but the hair is now coarse, brittle, and wiry. A trichologist suggested possible alopecia areata, but no clear diagnosis was made. I've been using biotin, EquiLife Daily Hair Support, a red light cap, derma rolling, and copper peptide serum, but haven't seen much improvement. Are there any tests you'd recommend to investigate this further? I'm considering the Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Sheena: Hi Dr C! Hope you are well and hope 2025 is treating you and your family well. Quick question, after doing The BIG 5, my IHP2 has recommended that I do a Limited CBO protocol. My question is, because its a Limited protocol, would it be ok for me to do a 'cheat meal' once a week? Or should I still wait for after 21 days to have my first cheat meal? Thank you so much! Spencer: Hello Dr. Cabral, Asking a question for my girlfriend. All of the sudden, during a stressful work time, her shoulder started hurting. She had limited range of motion and pain all day. It made sleeping hard. She works from home and wasn't using it or injuring it during this time, it just kind of started to hurt. She went to the orthopedic and he diagnosed with frozen shoulder, gave her a cortisone shot, and said give it a 3-6 months and it should go back to normal. I'm wondering if you have anything complementary that could be added to this as just waiting doesn't feel like the optimal strategy. Thank you for all you do Kavita: Hello Dr. Cabral, I have a question about my husband's diagnosis and also the history. Looking for some answers from you as you have mentioned several times that everything is curable. This is the diagnosis from the doctor: Right leg numbness in the setting of Common peroneal neuropathy at the head of bula versus right & Lumbosacral radiculopathy at L5, superimposed on likely diabetic Neuropathy: Improving symptoms of right lower lateral leg/foot numbness w/in distribution of both the peroneal and L5 nerve root. No evidence of foot drop/weakness. Mild pain, Gabapentin prn for pain as below. Neuropathy is likely from diabetes, will monitor, appears mild/primarily SF based on recent NCS/EMG above. - gabapentin 100 MG Oral Cap; Take 1 capsule (100 mg total) by mouth nightly as needed Thank you for tuning into today's Cabral HouseCall and be sure to check back tomorrow where we answer more of our community's questions! - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/3333 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? Please welcome my good friend, Tania Teschke back to the show! Tania is the author of the book Bordeaux Kitchen, which by many accounts is the best book ever written in the ancestral health scene—it is an absolute encyclopedia of healthy living, French food, wine, and culture. She has studied under some of the finest chefs and sommeliers and brings you the full scoop in this episode with all kinds of tips about nutrition and health, including a discussion about the integral role animal organs have played in not just French cuisine, but in many different cuisines around the world. This show will inspire you to bring organ meats back to your routine dietary patterns, and we talk about the value of the cultural aspect of food in France, as well as the importance of being mindful of what you put on your skin and Tania’s wonderful product line, The Bordeaux Kitchen. I’ve been using her lip balm and deodorant for the last few years and they’re all fantastic. When you think of all the offensive chemicals in mainstream beauty and body products (especially the ones that contain endocrine disrupting chemicals), it’s such a relief to know that there are skincare and cosmetic products formulated with clean ingredients, that work well, and are easily available on Etsy. Dr. Swan is the world's leading expert on the harmful impact of chemicals in our food, water, cosmetics, and various household and consumer products on our hormones, and the consequences for fertility and overall reproductive health. She explains how exposure to phthalates and other endocrine disruptors adversely impacts fetal development, puberty, and the adult brain and body. We discuss the global decline in human fertility due to disruptive environmental toxins, such as pesticides, and certain foods and beverages we consume. We discuss practical strategies to minimize exposure to harmful chemicals, such as phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), BPS, and PFAS. This includes reducing disposable plastic use, making healthier food preparation, consumption, and storage choices, and selecting personal and household products that don't contain harmful toxins.
