One week after the Channukah massacre at Bondi Beach in Australia, which left 15 innocent civilians killed, including a 10 year old girl named Matilda, and Chabad Rabbi, Eli Schlanger, and over 40 people injured, Alan Skorski interviewed Robert Gregory, CEO of the Australian Jewish Association. There were no punches pulled during the interview as Gregory put the blame squarely on the shoulders of Australian PM, Tony Albanese. "His apologies and insincere condolences are empty and too late!" Ever since the Hamas slaughter of over 1200 people in Israel on October 7, 2023, Islamist-inspired violent antisemitism has skyrocketed, while the government turned a blind eye. It was just under a year ago that we did a show about violent antisemitism in Australia that included: — A trailer filled with explosives and a list of Jewish targets discovered on Sydney's outskirts — Firebombing of a Melbourne synagogue, with one person hurt. Defacement of another with Nazi symbols and pro-Palestine graffiti — A Jewish childcare center set on fire — Three Jewish businesses torched — The former home of a prominent Jewish leader sprayed with graffiti — Cars defaced and windows smashed in areas where Jews live During the interview, Skorski and Gregory talked about reports from Sky News Australia giving the history of radical Islamist terrorism taking place in Australia, as the government made it policy to keep appeasing them. Even before October 7, Australia was seen as a welcoming country to people who came from dangerous countries with very anti-western values: On December 15, 2014, Man Monis, an Iranian refugee, took hostages at the Lindt chocolate café, killing 2. On June 5, 2017, Yacqub Khayre, a Somalian refugee, murdered a receptionist and held hostages at the Buckingham International Serviced apartments. And following October 7, 2023, The government issued visas to 3000 refugees from Gaza, and was welcomed at the airport by Home Affairs Minister, Tony Burke. "For too long," said Gregory, "the government of Tony Albanese ignored the warning signs and ignored the pleas from the Jewish community about the threats they were facing.” Like in America, under the Biden Administration, the leftist Australian government constantly tried to draw parallels between antisemitism and Islamophobia, even creating a government agency to combat both. To date, there are no examples of anti-Muslim violence having occurred in Australia. A number of Parliamentarians from the past and present have spoken out forcefully about the dangers of Islamist-inspired violent antisemitism, which was welcomed by the Jewish community. Albanese, on the other hand, has been jeered and made unwelcome by Jewish crowds memorializing the dead. Defense Minister Israel Katz told settlements leaders on Tuesday that, “With God’s help when the time comes, we will also establish… pioneer groups in northern Gaza, in place of the settlements that were evacuated.” He later walked back his statements, but not before Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich doubled down on them and also pushed for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to convince US President Donald Trump to recognize annexation of the West Bank in his upcoming US trip. We dive into the issues of Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip and West Bank in the first half of the program. The IPC famine monitoring organization stated on Friday that food security conditions in the entire Gaza Strip “remain critical,” in a new report covering the second half of October and all of November that classified the territory as being in its “Emergency” Phase 4 category — the fourth highest of its five levels of food insecurity. Sharon explains Israel's criticism of the report and raises the question of whether the Hamas-run Gazan Health Ministry has been manipulating its numbers of war casualties. Earlier this month, the High Court of Justice ruled unanimously 7-0 to annul the government’s decision to fire Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, asserting that the government had failed to provide legal justification for its decision to change the way an AG is fired, and determining that the new system it designed was fundamentally flawed. Long before World War II, the U.S. forced Native Americans onto reservations. After the Pearl Harbor bombing in 1941, the U.S. forced Japanese Americans into camps. In Arizona, the federal government once again looked to Indian reservations. In part two of his series on World War II internment camps in Arizona, KJZZ's Gabriel Pietrorazio has more. None of the eight other internment camps in the U.S. were on tribal lands, so why here in Arizona? UCLA anthropology professor Koji Lau-Ozawa has an answer. “John Collier, who was the commissioner of Indian Affairs at the time, advocated for all of the camps to be put on reservation lands. He thought that the Office of Indian Affairs was well suited to this task of managing these confined racialized populations.” The “Indian New Deal”, as FDR called it, was part of the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 and tried making amends for past treatment by investing in tribal infrastructure. That was, until the war effort began. “Funds were starting to dry up. This presented an opportunity.” An opportunity to turn Japanese Americans into a source of prison labor to develop tribal resources, as shown by a 1943 propaganda film narrated by Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's brother, Milton, about an internment camp in western Arizona. Brian Niiya says the U.S. embraced a stereotype. “Japanese Americans, with their supposed expertise and farming and agriculture, could help build up the land that would allow for the Native Americans to benefit from – without the consent of the tribes themselves, of course.” Niiya is editor of Densho Encyclopedia, which chronicles the camps' history. Without much legal representation or political clout at that time, the Gila River Indian Community and Colorado River Indian Tribes both tried fighting camp construction, but failed. “Through the Office of Indian Affairs, I think there was just a thought that we could bulldoze our way through.” Once again, today's federal government is butting up against tribal land. The Trump administration's “Alligator Alcatraz” is being built near the Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park. “We're right in the middle of it. We have members that live within 500 feet of the detention center. You know, it's not like this distant thing that it is for a lot of Floridians in Naples or Miami.” Talbert Cypress is chairman of the 600-member Miccosukee Tribe, which brought Alligator Alcatraz to a halt. “We don't go to war anymore with the tomahawk or anything like that. You know, we go to courtrooms now, and we go to meetings with politicians.” (Photo courtesy Maxpixel / Boise City Archives, John Hardy Family Collection, MS084) Children across the country are being raised by relatives or close family friends. The Mountain West News Bureau's Daniel Spaulding has more on a new report highlighting the challenges facing these kinship families, which are more common within Indigenous communities. According to the U.S. Government of Accountability Office (GAO), these households are more likely to experience poverty and mental health issues. Kinship families are common in Mountain West states with high Indigenous populations like New Mexico and Arizona. Kathy Larin at GAO says kin caregiving is an important part of tribal culture, but because many Indigenous caregivers are outside the formal foster care system, they often receive less financial support. “One of the biggest challenges that we heard across the board for grandparents and other relatives that are raising, you know, their relative children is just the financial burden of it.” Larin says states could adopt standards and programs designed to better support kinship families. In today's episode, David McKnight breaks down the creditor protection rules for Roth IRAs and Roth 401(k)s, as well as why more and more Americans are turning to tax-free accounts to insulate themselves from creditors… and the Government itself. In theory, under Federal Law, all IRAs traditional or Roths receive a certain level of bankruptcy protection under the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005. However, that protection is specifically tied to bankruptcy proceedings. If you're sued in civil court, the Federal bankruptcy statute doesn't automatically apply, state law takes over… By pointing out differences between states like Texas, Arizona and Florida on one end, and California and Montana on the other, David explains that whether your Roth IRA survives a potential lawsuit intact depends largely on the state in which you reside. Roth 401(k)s play by a different set of rules, as they fall under the 1974 Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). David notes that "ERISA is the big Federal law that governs most employer-sponsored retirement plans, and it comes with some of the strongest creditor protection available anywhere in the financial world." According to David, it's not hard to see why the Federal Government is going to need huge infusions of new revenue in the very near future. Wondering how they will be raising that capital? By targeting the nearly $45 trillion in tax-deferred retirement accounts like IRAs and 401(k). In other words, while your retirement accounts may indeed be largely immune to lawsuits, they're entirely exposed to the impact of rising tax rates. David points out that contributing to 401(k)s or IRAs is like going into a business partnership with the IRS – every year, they get to vote on what percentage of your profits they get to keep. Remember: a well-planned Roth strategy doesn't just shield you from tomorrow's higher tax rates, it can also serve as a fortress protecting your wealth from outside claims.
