In this episode of the Creator Method Podcast, Gary Lipovetsky sits down with Aliza Shapiro, a licensed therapist, founder of a multi-state private practice, and creator known for her clinical insight and radical honesty, to unpack the mental health realities creators and high performers often face behind the scenes. Aliza breaks down why so many creators are running on empty, how ambition can turn toxic, and why burnout is not a sign of weakness or laziness, but a signal that your mind and body are asking you to slow down. Together, Gary and Aliza explore the emotional cost of giving so much of yourself to an audience, the importance of boundaries, the science behind burnout, and why taking breaks can actually make creators more effective, creative, and sustainable. The conversation also dives into decision fatigue, imposter syndrome, mom guilt, therapy, meditation, and the tension between building a successful career while staying connected to yourself and the people closest to you. Aliza shares practical insights for recognizing early burnout signals, protecting your energy, and learning how to slow down before life forces you to stop. Whether you're a creator, entrepreneur, or high performer trying to build something meaningful without losing yourself in the process, this episode is a powerful reminder that success is not just about strategy. It's about self-awareness, boundaries, adaptability, and knowing when to refill your own tank. What changes when we lead with trauma sensitivity? Trauma is far more common than most realize, affecting at least 70% of people, and its hidden residue frequently drives workplace conflict through survival mechanisms like freezing or fawning. Through trauma sensitivity, leaders can look past superficial personality clashes, avoid replicating past injuries, and proactively cultivate structural safety where everyone can safely show up and do their best work. On this episode of Just One Q, Dominique chats with workplace human rights lawyer, consultant, and author Adriana Leigh about her book, Trauma Sensitivity at Work. They break down how common stress responses manifest in everyday team dynamics, differentiate a checkbox “informed” approach from genuine sensitivity, and discuss practical strategies like “meeting hygiene”. Learn how leaders can prioritize emotional regulation to build more humane, supportive, and highly effective workplace cultures. We read part of The Dialectic of Enlightenment (1944), specifically the parts about Homer's epic as an allegory for the merely apparent triumph of modernism (capitalism, instrumental reason) over myth (savagery, magical thinking). Homer is odd for H&A because even stylistically, the epics present a mixture of cultures: They glorify violence, but their form is very ordered, and their very popularity makes them the first mass-culture products of the West. Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus is in effect saying goodbye to the mythical world as he turns each challenge into a tool in his quest to get home. H&A use the episode with the Sirens as an allegory for how the workers are deafened to the call of anti-social myth (they have their work to do!), while the upper class can hear it but is helpless to actually act on it; like Odysseus tied to the mast, they too are strapped into the capitalist machine. Read along with us; Ch. 2, "Odysseus or Myth and Enlightenment," starts on PDF p56 (p35), but we quickly backtrack to the first mention of Odysseus in Ch. 1 (the same essay we began previously) on PDF p46 (p25). How does gender affect workplace conflict? Task conflict – challenging ideas to find the best possible solutions – is essential for team innovation, but it carries hidden risks for women. While men are often rewarded with a boost in perceived agency for engaging in task conflict, women are frequently penalized for violating gender stereotypes. This subtle bias can lead to workplace distancing, lost opportunities, and long-term occupational segregation. Overcoming this barrier requires team members and leaders to think critically about their biases, audit their evaluations for gendered tone, and actively create conditions where everyone can safely discuss ideas. On this episode of Just One Q, Dominique chats with Dr. Samantha Hancock, an assistant professor at Western University whose research focuses on the challenges faced by women pursuing leadership. Together, they explore how gender bias penalizes women for the exact same assertive behaviors that benefit their male colleagues. Dr. Hancock shares actionable takeaways for individuals and leaders to recognize these micro-biases and build genuinely equitable teams. Who funds white supremacists? Apparently the Southern Poverty Law Center, to the tune of millions. Matt Ehret uses this jaw-dropping revelation as a launchpad into one of the most important recurring themes in modern history: the left/right dialectic as a top-down intelligence operation. From COINTELPRO and FBI-manufactured terror cells to the Scottish Rite networks that engineered the American Civil War, Ehret argues the game has never changed, only the costumes. He traces how British imperial interests used both abolitionists and confederates to destroy the union from within, and why figures like Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and MLK represent the rare cases of people successfully escaping the trap. He closes with a prescient warning: economic breakdown is the precondition for civil war, and someone is already running the playbook again.

How can we elevate disability inclusion to true belonging? Inclusion is something systems do through policies and rules, but belonging is something people feel when they are truly wanted in a space rather than just "allowed" to be there. True belonging requires a shift from reactive, procedural accommodations that place the onus on the individual, to proactive, collective access that removes environmental and social barriers for everyone. By centering lived experience and applying an intersectional lens, organizations support a culture where disability is normalized within professional life. On this episode of Just One Q, Dominique chats with Ingrid Palmer, an award-winning speaker, social justice consultant, and Principal IDEAL Advocate at Realize Canada. Through impactful personal stories, they explore the shift from procedural inclusion to true belonging for disabled employees, the power of universal design, and how to move beyond reactive accommodations to proactive, collective access. In this episode, we're joined by professor Joel Wainwright (co-author of Climate Leviathan) to discuss his newest book, The End: Marx, Darwin, and the Natural History of the Climate Crisis. Together, Breht and Joel explore the intellectual impact Charles Darwin had on Karl Marx, and why it matters for the ecological crisis of our time. Wainwright argues that Marx's study of Darwin helped him develop a distinctly Marxian concept of natural history, reshaping how he understood history, nature, and capitalism itself. Reading Capital through this lens, they unpack how Marx's critique becomes an ecological critique: capitalism as a social formation that reorganizes the human–Earth relation, producing crisis, "surplus" populations, and new forms of domination - and have some fun disagreements along the way. They close by asking what this natural-historical Marx can contribute to building an eco-socialist alternative beyond capitalist growth and climate catastrophe. How can ADHDers thrive at work? Navigating the workplace with ADHD presents unique challenges, but it also offers a distinct set of strengths and perspectives. Unlocking our best work can require a tailored approach: “gamifying” mundane tasks, offloading cognitive weight to digital tools, and finding unconventional ways to manage energy, focus, and time. When combined with foundational self-care, these strategies can transform perceived limitations into powerful creative assets. The strategies themselves often become valuable contributions to the wider team. For instance, visual storytelling can help an ADHD mind retain complex information and, at an organizational scale, that same approach becomes a pillar of an inclusive, high-impact communication strategy. On this episode of Just One Q, Dominique chats with guest Scott Mooney, an award-winning educational illustrator with over 30 years of experience. Scott shares candidly about his late diagnosis of ADHD, his specific strategies for self-management and productivity, and how visual storytelling can bridge communication gaps in the workplace. ABSTRACT In his influential master-slave dialectic, Hegel looks to demonstrate that being a master is self-defeating. The master seeks absolute independence and genuine recognition from another. However, they depend upon their slave for their mastery, and the recognition their slave provides is “one-sided and unequal” (PS, §191, p. 114). Thus, Hegel claims that mastery undermines itself. In this paper, I put some pressure on this dialectic. Amongst other things, I argue that what is primarily wrong with the master is the fact they dominate a slave, not that they somehow fail on their own terms. ABOUT Joe primarily works on ethics and agency in Kant and the post-Kantian tradition. He also has interests in the philosophy of love and media ethics.
We're joined by the four authors of *Digital Theory* — M. Beatrice Fazi, Alexander R. Galloway, Matthew Handelman, and Leif Weatherby — for a roundtable on their new collaborative work.Digital Theory (University of Minnesota Press, 2025) makes a deceptively simple but far-reaching claim: the digital is theoretical. Not in the sense that we theorize about it, but that digitality itself — mediation through discrete units — is a condition for thinking as such.Just to get it out of the way, listeners to the pod know that these four thinkers need no introduction. This is literally the cohort that we've held in our minds over the past few years (there's probably nobody whose shaped our brains as formatively on this subject than Alexander Galloway, whose writing was the subject of Marek's en route masters thesis and the first PDF sent between Marek and Roberto). The conversation opens up a series of productive disagreements within the group. What's the relationship between the digital and computation? For Fazi, the digital is discretization — "the cut" — while computation is systematization, building, constructing. This distinction allows the book to think the digital before and beyond the computer, back to proto-writing tokens and forward to whatever comes next. A major target here is what Galloway calls "analog philosophy," the dominant strain of theory over the last few decades that privileges affect, sensation, intensity, immanence. Deleuze is named directly as the great philosopher of the analog: obsessed with the fold, hostile to structuralism, drawn to "a language of breaths and screams." The authors aren't throwing Deleuze overboard entirely (to them the "Postscript on the Societies of Control" still hits) but they're skeptical that his ontology can account for digital technology as a form of thought. Can we “integrate” inclusion work without making it invisible? As we mark the 100th anniversary of Black History Month this February, organizations face a pivotal moment in the evolution of inclusion work. While many companies are moving toward "integrating" inclusion principles into their broader processes and talent lifecycles, there is a risk that these efforts will fade into the background without deliberate, sustained focus.Dean Delpeache introduces the "3 I's" framework (Intentionality, Integration, and Invisibility) to highlight key tensions and to help leaders assess their strategy. By coupling integration with explicit accountability and modeled inclusive behaviours, organizations can ensure that their commitment to equity remains visible and effective, even as the public conversation quiets. On this episode of Just One Q, Dominique chats with guest Dean Delpeache, a talent management expert and the Director of Strasity. They discuss the historical context of the Black History Month centennial, the state of inclusion work in 2026, and offer practical strategies for leaders to keep anti-racism work front and center.Keep Up with Dean:https://www.linkedin.com/in/deandelpeache/https://strasity.com/Try Learning Snippets:https://dialectic.solutions/signupContact Us to Be a Guest on Just One Q:https://dialectic.solutions/podcast-guest

Rather than crediting star making to the culture industry, to fans, or to star themselves, Sharon makes the case that all three forces together constitute a celebrity creation machine. After discussing her archival work on theatrical scrapbooking in Indiana, Sharon pulls from the vaults a marvelous Hollywood memoir, Brooke Haywood's Haywired. That triggers discussion of the studio system and how its models of celebrity are and are not with us today. Sharon's two Recallable Books also capitalize on mid-century notions of celebrity: Mommie Dearest by Christina Crawford and Edie: American Girl by Jean Stein and George Plimpton. John's choice, The Entertainer by Margaret Talbot, another biographical account written by a star's daughter, gives a slightly rosier perspective on the family memoir. Discussed in this episode: Sharon Marcus, The Drama of Celebrity Daniel Boorstin, The Image (“a person who is known for his well-knownness”) Theodor Adorno and Theodore Horkheimer, “Culture Industry” in Dialectic of Enlightenment Henry Jenkins, “Textual Poachers“ Dick Herbdige, “Subculture: The Meaning of Style“ Mark Twain, Patented Scrapbook Innovator Brooke Hayward, Haywire Christina Crawford, Mommie Dearest Jean Stein, George Plimpton, Edie, American Girl Margaret Talbot, The Entertainer Read the episode here. In the wake of the recent killing by federal agents of two adults in Minneapolis, this podcast represents an attempt to deepen my perspective on these events, on Donald Trump, and on the forces in our country that have supported him. I close with some thoughts about how to counter him in the coming days. View video version of this podcast
Most people on the contemporary left see Stalin as an unfortunate stain on the history of the global left, a part of the historical process that we'd be better avoiding in our attempts to build towards socialism. He does still have some scattered defenders though, putting out books and articles trying to turn his legacy into something commendable that we ought to try and build upon today. Returning today is Douglas Greene, who is not one of his defenders, but instead has written a book exploring the defenses of Stalin with his new book In Stalin's Shadow: Leon Trotsky and the Legacy of the Moscow Trials (Resistance Books, 2025). Much of the text is concerned with fact-checking, going through the middle decades of the twentieth century to give a critical accounting of Stalin, but one that nonetheless holds onto the revolutionary Marxist tradition. Beyond this fact-checking mission though, the book also takes this time as an opportunity to reflect on some of the deeper structures of thought that might lead one to defend Stalin. Rather than a simple mistake that can be easily corrected with a couple new facts, Greene sees neo-Stalinism as a sort of leftist conspiracy theory, one that mirrors much of the paranoia of Stalin's own time. The book then is an opportunity to reflect on what sort of reasoning takes us into these sorts of dead-ends, and what sorts of reasoning might be needed to help us start building towards a truly revolutionary future. Much of the content of this book builds on Greene's previously published book The Dialectics of Saturn, which we discussed a couple years ago. Douglas Greene is an independent historian. His many previous books have included A Failure of Vision: Michael Harrington and the Limits of Democratic Socialism, Stalinism and the Dialectics of Saturn: Anticommunism, Marxism, and the Fate of the Soviet Union and The New Reformism and the Revival of Karl Kautsky: The Renegade's Revenge, all of which have been discussed previously on this show. He is a frequent contributor to Left Voice. Learn more about your ad choices. This week I talk about alcohol prohibition and the birth of the 18th Amendment. Mainstream media, strategically manipulated by a woman named Carrie Nation and her posse of temperance propagandists, talked the United States into responding to problems stemming from rapid industrialization (addiction, homelessness, etc.) by outlawing alcohol in 1919, and they pulled it off by using Christianity and Femininity as tools of social change despite being unable to vote as women at that time. If toughness built the ship, can belonging change its course? The maritime industry has traditionally valued "hard traits" like stoicism and rigid hierarchy, often creating cultures where employees must mask their true selves to survive. But Captain Kamila Calko argues that true safety and innovation come not from fear, but from psychological safety and authenticity. By shifting from a scarcity mindset to one of collective empowerment, leaders in traditional industries can build trust, improve retention, and create environments where everyone can thrive. On this episode of Just One Q, Dominique chats with Captain Kamila Calko, a marine industry trailblazer and founder of SeaLight and SeaLight Sisters. They explore the heavy cost of conformity in male-dominated workplaces and how Kamila transformed her leadership style by embracing vulnerability and authenticity. Kamila shares insights on navigating "lateral violence" between women, the critical link between psychological safety and physical safety, and how we can all be "architects of change" in systems that are slow to evolve.Keep Up with Kamila:https://www.sealight.one/Try Learning Snippets:https://dialectic.solutions/signupContact Us to Be a Guest on Just One Q:https://dialectic.solutions/podcast-guest

Jun 16, 2025 In this episode, Alyson and Breht explore Friedrich Engels' Dialectics of Nature, a bold and underappreciated attempt to apply dialectical materialism to the natural sciences. Often dismissed or misunderstood, this unfinished work offers a sweeping view of reality - from physics and chemistry to evolution, human consciousness, and ecological breakdown - through the lens of Marxist philosophy. Together, they unpack Engels' central claim that nature itself unfolds dialectically: through contradiction, motion, transformation, and interconnection. They cover the three laws of dialectics, Engels' materialist account of human evolution, his critique of mechanistic science, vulgar materialism, and metaphysical thinking, as well as his early warnings about capitalism's ecological consequences. Along the way, they connect these insights to Marx's concept of species-being, and reflect on what this revolutionary worldview offers in the age of climate crisis, hyper-alienation, and late capitalist decay. Finally, Alyson and Breht have a fascinating open-ended discussion about the existential and spiritual implications of dialectical materialism as a worldview. Whether you're new to dialectical materialism or looking to deepen your understanding, this conversation reframes Engels' work as a profound contribution not just to Marxism, but to the philosophy of science itself. The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Ep. 186 The dialectic is ultimately the engine of all Marxist and Hegelian thought and also underlies Fascism and the conflict between Fascism and Marxism. It is also fundamentally Sociological Alchemy, as the Soviets both knew and admitted. Based on Marx's ideas about dialectical materialism as the fundamental law of all of Nature, including Man, the Soviets outlined three key dialectical laws and taught them to every school child and party member. First, there is the transformation of quantity into quality, and vice-versa. Second, there is the struggle and unification of opposites. Third, there is the "negation of the negation," which most people know as "problem, reaction, solution" in practice. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay introduces these three dialectical laws of Marxist and Soviet thought and brings them alive for you while comparing them to the social alchemy of George Soros and the ancient wizardry that tried to turn lead into gold. Senior thesis is the capstone of a classical Christian education, and Dr. Tom Vierra believes it may be one of the most countercultural things schools do today. In this episode, Davies Owens talks with Tom, longtime classical educator and Senior Thesis Coordinator at Wilson Hill Academy, about why thesis is far more than “just a big paper.” Tom shares his path from early days at Great Hearts to helping shape Wilson Hill's senior thesis program, where students research a topic that matters, write a 12–15 page thesis-driven paper, and publicly defend it. Along the way, they learn self-management, deep research, biblical reasoning, and confident communication that carry far beyond college.Together they unpack the six-part classical rhetoric structure, including exordium, narratio, and refutatio, and why Wilson Hill requires students to write an antithesis paper arguing against their own position. This habit trains humility, civil discourse, and the ability to engage real counterarguments rather than living in an echo chamber. Tom also gives examples of standout thesis topics, from classical music and beauty to AI in medicine and political theory, and explains how schools can approve ambitious topics that still reflect a biblical worldview.
“We're at an inflection point – a civilizational crisis. Western imperial dominance is ending, and its dying spasms are only accelerating the collapse.” Aaron Good Aaron Good, author of American Exception: Empire and the Deep State, is back to talk with Steve about the crisis of the US-led imperial order and the manufactured “common sense” that keeps people trapped inside a rigged system. Centuries of Western imperial dominance are unraveling, and the US responds with flailing, genocidal actions in Gaza and Ukraine. These aren't signs of strength; they're the death rattles of a corpse that doesn't know it's dead yet. “Realizing you're not voting your way out of it might be the most terrifying ‘aha moment' of them all.” Steve Grumbine At home the two major US parties are presented as alternatives, the ballot is a participation trophy in the “managed spectacle” of elections. Obama? Trump? Biden? Different brands, same oligarchy. Corporate media and algorithmic “alternative media” work together to keep people confused, divided, and clinging to the fantasy that if they just vote harder, donate more, and binge the right “left” YouTubers, they can reform a system designed to crush them. The empire's to-do list (crush dissent, steal resources) remains the same. What are we to do? Maybe we can't break the system yet, but we can stop being dupes. See the Matrix.
