The Supreme Court kicked off its new term Monday by opting not take up two cases that could have major implications for reproductive rights. In one decision, the court rejected an appeal from an Alabama fertility clinic seeking to avoid a wrongful death lawsuit over the destruction of a couple's embryos. The other case it rejected was an appeal from the Biden administration over emergency abortions in Texas. With issues like trans rights, ghost guns and the potential for more election cases on the docket this term, Melissa Murray, co-host of Crooked's ‘Strict Scrutiny,' breaks down what we can expect from the justices in the coming months. And in headlines: Forecasters upgraded Hurricane Milton to a Category 5 storm as it barrels toward Florida's Gulf Coast, Vice President Kamala Harris reflected on the one-year anniversary of Hamas' attack on Israel, and Georgia's top court revived the state's six-week abortion ban.Show Notes:Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

While schools overseas often start new academic years in August, September, or even February, in Japan, the new school year starts in April when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. This episode gathers various typical experiences associated with the start of a new school year, such as announcements of class assignments and homeroom teachers, and navigating relationships in new classes. In Japan, students spend an entire year with the same classmates and remove their shoes inside the school, which are cultural practices different from those abroad. Therefore, stories about class announcements and shoe lockers might be particularly unusual and interesting for our listeners. First, it was 'undocumented.' Then, it was 'asylum seekers.' Now, the latest Orwellian language from Democrats for those crossing our border illegally is 'newcomers.' The term 'illegal aliens' is now verboten among the Left, as they try to dilute the nature of the presence for those who do not have legal status - or any claim or right - to be in the United States. Listeners react by phone and text to this shift in terminology, as well as the weak Biden border policy that led to our current crisis.

Contemporary efforts to undermine democracy, spread disinformation and subvert elections are not without precedent in American politics, according to Rachel Maddow, the longtime MSNBC host, author and podcast creator. Rather, they've got a “prequel,” a period of American history before and during World War II when an “ultra-right authoritarian movement, weirdly infatuated with foreign dictatorships” planned to attack government targets to sow chaos and ultimately overthrow President Franklin D. Roosevelt. We'll talk to Maddow about what we can learn from the Americans who beat back the domestic authoritarians of the 1930s and 1940s. Her new book is “Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism.” The U.S. Supreme Court's latest term is underway with another round of big cases to watch. The future of an entire federal agency – the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – is expected to be decided, along with cases about whether someone under a domestic violence restraining order can possess a gun, and the legality of the abortion medication mifepristone. We'll look at the Court's docket and what's at stake with Ian Millhiser, senior correspondent at Vox who covers the Supreme Court. Guests: Rachel Maddow, author, "Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism"; host, "The Rachel Maddow Show" on MSNBC. Maddow's other books include “DRIFT: The Unmooring of American Military Power” and “Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth” Ian Millhiser, senior correspondent, Vox - His books include "Injustices: The Supreme Court's History of Comforting the Comfortable and Afflicting the Afflicted" and "The Agenda: How a Republican Supreme Court is Reshaping America."

The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 2: On Monday, the Supreme Court starts its next term. According to Jess Bravin of The Wall Street Journal one of the most noteworthy cases will be Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) v. Community Financial Services Association. The Court will hear oral argument in that case on Tuesday—and the Justices will be asked to decide whether the “bureau's independent funding mechanism,” absent Congressional approval, is constitutional. You can read more here: https://www.wsj.com/us-news/law/supreme-court-term-cases-36ddd9e7?mod=hp_lista_pos3 According to Zach Kessel of National Review, “California governor Gavin Newsom on Monday signed a bill repealing a law prohibiting physicians from sharing information with their patients that contradicts the prevailing scientific sentiment on Covid-19. The initial law, which Newsom signed in September 2022, violated doctors' First Amendment rights to free speech and Fourteenth Amendment rights to due process of law, critics say.” Could this move towards moderation be a sign that Newsom is at least considering a run in the 2024 presidential election? You can read Kessel's full article here: https://www.nationalreview.com/news/newsom-repeals-california-law-prohibiting-doctors-from-sharing-unapproved-covid-information/ On Monday, former President Donald Trump arrived in New York for a civil trial in which New York Attorney General Letitia James alleges that Trump-owned properties were dramatically, and fraudulently, over-valued on official documents. According to Amanda Prestigiacomo of The Daily Wire, “An event warning against the transgender treatments and surgeries on minors, featuring a detransitioned teenager named Chloe Cole, has been removed from event managing and ticketing platform Eventbrite.” Prestigiacomo reports that the event violated Eventbrite's “policy on Hateful, Dangerous, or Violent Content” and, consequently, the event was “unpublished.” You can read the full article here: https://www.dailywire.com/news/censored-for-taking-a-stand-eventbrite-cancels-event-against-child-mutilation-with-detransitioner-chloe-cole

On 1st February 2021, a coup d'état began in Myanmar where the National League for democracy was deposed by Myanmar's military. Students studying at the country's higher education institutes were left with a decision: continue their studies under the new regime or walk out. In this documentary - A New Term in Myanmar - more than two years on from the coup, we will hear from five students at Parami University sharing their experiences of studying during the coup. Offering a US style Liberal Arts education, Parami University is one of many institutions offering people another chance to begin, or in some cases, restart their learning. From dealing with electricity blackouts to writing essays about philosophy for teachers who are only ever a tile on a screen and usually on the other side of the world - each student shares how they are using education as both resistance and hope for themselves and their country. Alongside them, we will hear from Parami University staff and academics who explain how education continues during conflict.
