He rose to prominence during the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath, during which period he adopted the nickname "Prince of Darkness".Osbourne became a founding member of Black Sabbath in 1968, providing lead vocals from their eponymous debut studio album in 1970 to Never Say Die! in 1978. The band was highly influential in the development of heavy metal music, in particular their critically acclaimed releases Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973). Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath in 1979 due to his problems with alcohol and other drugs. He then began a successful solo career with Blizzard of Ozz in 1980 and released 13 studio albums, the first seven of which received multi-platinum certifications in the United States. He reunited with Black Sabbath on several occasions. He rejoined in 1997 and helped record the band's final studio album, 13 (2013), before they embarked on a farewell tour that ended with a 2017 performance in their native Birmingham.Osbourne sold over 100 million albums, including his solo work and Black Sabbath releases. He co-starred with Jack and Kelly in the television series Ozzy & Jack's World Detour as well as The Osbournes Want to Believe with his wife Sharon and son Jack.On 5 July 2025, Osbourne performed his final show at the Back to the Beginning concert event amid ongoing health issues, having announced earlier in the year that this would be his last live performance, though he intended to continue recording music. Episode 170 of The Letterman Podcast features our very special guest, Jordan Zevon. A gifted singer-songwriter in his own right, Jordan is also the son of the late, great Warren Zevon — the genius, the icon, the soon-to-be Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee.Warren Zevon was a brilliantly bright thread woven into the fabric of David Letterman's legacy, appearing on the show more than 30 times as a guest, musical performer, and even stepping in as guest bandleader when Paul Shaffer was away. His work and wit were cherished by fans — and by Dave himself.Joining in the conversation is friend of the show and official Warren Zevon historian Adam Unger, who helps navigate this heartfelt and often funny discussion. Jordan opens up about what it was like being Warren's son, shares personal insights into his father's legacy, and recalls his own performances on Late Show, including a memorable one with The Wallflowers. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2016 conversation with Mike Stoller. ABOUT MIKE STOLLERMike Stoller has written more than 60 songs that have appeared on the Billboard charts, including the #1 hits “Hound Dog,” “Kansas City,” “Yakety Yak,” “Searchin',” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Poison Ivy,” “Stand By Me,” “Young Blood,” “Don't,” and “Ruby, Baby." After Stoller and songwriting partner Jerry Leiber found early R&B success with recordings by Little Esther, Charles Brown, Ray Charles, and Big Mama Thornton, Elvis Presley turned their song "Hound Dog" into a #1 single on the pop, R&B, and country charts in 1956. Elvis went on to record more than 20 Leiber and Stoller titles, including the hits "Love Me," "Loving You," "Jailhouse Rock," "Treat Me Nice," "She's Not You," and "Bossa Nova Baby." Mike and Jerry signed an independent production deal with Atlantic Records in the mid-1950s, where they wrote and produced a series of hits for several artists, including the Drifters' "There Goes My Baby," "Dance With Me," and "On Broadway." Additionally, the pair wrote and produced all the Coasters' singles, including "Young Blood," "Searchin'," "Charlie Brown," "Along Came Jones," and "Poison Ivy." Other highlights from the Leiber and Stoller songbook include "Love Potion No. 9," which was a hit for both the Clovers and the Searchers, and "Is That All There Is," which was a hit for Peggy Lee. Eleven different versions of their song “Stand By Me” appeared on the Billboard charts over the span of 50 years, with the original version by Ben E. King hitting the Top 10 in both 1961 and 1986. Smokey Joe's Cafe, which included 40 Leiber and Stoller songs, opened in 1995 and became the longest running musical revue in Broadway history. Stoller received the prestigious ASCAP Founders Award in 1991, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and is a member of both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Bassist Dennis Dunaway was—and is—one of the key figures in the 1970s rock band, Alice Cooper. That's right, the band Alice Cooper, which recorded seven albums between 1969 and 1973 (and had such hits as "I'm Eighteen" and "School's Out") before the singer Alice Cooper (nee Vince Furnier) went on to a successful solo career. Now the surviving members of the Alice Cooper band, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, have reunited to record their first album in 52 years, The Revenge of Alice Cooper. Dunaway, described by the singer as “one of the few true surrealists that I've ever met,” reflects on what it was like finally to write and record again as a group, with producer Bob Ezrin also back. Did old tensions resurface? What's the deal with the band touring—or not touring—to support this album? (Photo by Jenny Risher.)

While the average rock fan may not know the name Nicky Hopkins, the average rock legend knows the name very well and most likely worked with him at some point. A classically trained pianist, Nicky Hopkins would go onto play with the greatest rock bands of all time - The Beatles, The Rollings Stones, The Who, The Kinks - and that was just the 1960s!! Finally, Nicky has been chosen for induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame! Though he did have some solo releases, Nicky found himself most at home in the studio working with other artists and helping to create some of the most iconic songs of all time. The eerie beginning to The Stones Monkey Man? That was Nicky. The whirling magic in She's A Rainbow? Nicky again. He ended up playing on over 250 albums and more than 1,000 songs, some of which were the greatest of all time. The Session Man is a documentary about his life and career growing up in the midlands, working his way to London, working with icons and then moving to America. This examination of the soft-spoken Hopkins illustrates his health battles throughout his life which would conspire to keep him off the road for much of his career and how he eventually found a home with other musicians in Northern California and eventually Nashville. Nicky Hopkins is an unsung hero of rock n roll and we're proud to shed a little light on the man and his amazing talent. Behold the prodigal sons of Asbury Park, NJ! It's a total joy to welcome red-hot buzz band DOGS IN A PILE to the Upful LIFE. This colorful conversation with all 5 members went down mid-Feb. '25, during Jam Cruise 21. Though DOGS are somewhat of a young band, their meteoric ascent certainly shreds for itself. So I wanted a peek behind the curtain, to see what makes these boys tick, and find out what it's like riding a rocketship into jam-scene success. Wrangling together all the Dogs' cats into one cruise cabin during the biggest rager of the year is no small feat, however these dudes were definitely stoked to connect, and once we got established they really opened up. Dogs In A Pile proved a humble, humorous, hungry pack; after wrapping the insightful chat these Jersey boys definitely felt like my new homies. So much so that I chased the Dogs convo with the return of my oldest/dearest pal Jason Abrams (J.A.), who comes back to the Upful podwaves talkin' summer tours and a whole lot more. 0:00 - ep.088 preview 03:45 - SPONSOR - Down By The River @ Cactus Jack's CO 7/19 06:00 - The Upful Update 11:15 - Introducing: DOGS IN A PILE 17:45 - INTERVIEW / Dogs [44 min] 1:01:30 - Crossover to JASON ABRAMS 1:07:15 - CONVERSATION w/ J.A.
