Episode: 2232 The real story behind Amelia Earhart, and other tales to good to be true. Today, I'm in trouble.
This episode is the second half of our two-part series on the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan. Most of us have heard of Amelia Earhart but as prominent as she is in the history books there is still a ton of uncertainty surrounding what happened to her. Last time, we focused on the details of the trip and the possibility that she and Noonan ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean. In this episode, we review some of the other popular hypotheses about what befell the famous pilot and her navigator. This episode is the first of a two part series on the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan. Most of us have heard of Amelia Earhart, but as prominent as she is in the history books, there is still a ton of uncertainty and speculation surrounding her 1937 disappearance. What actually happened to her and her navigator, Fred Noonan? Did they survive their plane crash? Did Earhart change her name to Irene Bolam? We will attempt to answer these questions, explore the evidence that exists, and talk about what we think the most credible hypotheses are. In this episode, I am joined by long-time friend and collaborator Dr. Greg Berg to chat with Dr. Richard Jantz about his paper "Amelia Earhart and the Nikumaroro Bones: A 1941 Analysis versus Modern Quantitative Techniques" from Vol 1. No. 2. We take a deep dive into the Amelia Earhart story covering the span between her disappearance in 1937 through Dr. Jantz's initial presentation of the Nikumaroro Bones hypothesis in 1998, a published rebuttal of the hypothesis in 2015, formal development and presentation of the hypothesis in 2018, and moving toward the determination of a positive identification. A warning, though, this one will be a little bit statistics heavy; however, I feel that it is necessary to have a good foundational understanding of the procedures that Dr. Jantz used and how he used them to be able to critically examine his findings. As you'll soon find, it is important to provide some, or any, measure of certainty to support your claims. To find out more information about TIGHAR at https://tighar.org/ Dr. Richard Jantz is Director Emeritus of Forensic Anthropology Center, Professor Emeritus Dr. Jantz conducts research in the areas of human variation, skeletal biology and forensic anthropology. He is primarily concerned with developing computerized data bases in these areas which can be used to address a variety of research questions.
Watch this ISO episode on YouTube Jeb and Blake fail to find Amelia Earhart. So they've got that in common with the folks profiled in this week's episode. Discussed in this Episode: Amelia Earhart, pioneering woman pilot Husband and publisher George Putnam Navigator Fred Noonan AutoGyros/GyroCopters and how they are different from helicopters. Propaganda film Flight for Freedom (DVD) which fictionalizes the story of Earhart as spy. The Lockheed Electra Model 10 The Searchers: Joseph Gervais, the obsessive guy who believed an innocent New Jersey housewife was secretly Amelia. I'm not linking to his stupid book or to the woman he stalked and harassed, though she did pass in 1982. Even when she died, he tried to get to see the body. No. No, no, no, no. "It's so hard to identify it because you're looking at the ghost of the air-frame; you're looking at the coral that has grown around the structure and that structure is gone." Crime scenes might be the running theme for this trial. But here’s a scenario that I want to explain to people who aren’t familiar with this case. It’s an easy visual; so, follow me. Imagine you’re a detective called in to investigate a murder. Let’s say in this case the victim is a woman and the likely suspect is her husband; a domestic situation gone terribly wrong. When you arrive at the crime scene; let’s say it’s the home of this couple, one thing is obvious; there’s no body. At the crime scene there’s multiple pieces of evidence to investigate; it looks like there may have been a struggle of some kind, maybe you find a little blood; you might even find a murder weapon; all solid evidence yet no body in sight. Then suddenly, you learn that a body of a woman was discovered several miles away in an alley that appears to have several similarities to your apparent victim. Here’s the question. Do you investigate the body? Or do you ignore it and try to prove your case based solely off the crime scene? Tonight, we’re going to talk about a theory that’s been at the forefront of the investigation into the vanishing of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan. And this theory happens to have a body. And that body is none other than that of an airplane carrying multiple similarities to the plane they vanished in almost 82 years ago. It’s time to dissect the third of five theories with experts, evidence and testimony for the Buka hypothesis. "A lot of it was just imagining myself in Earhart’s shoes on Nikumaroro and thinking about what she’d do." Our first three-peat on the podcast, Dr. Tom King formally of TIGHAR returns for a different kind of discussion on his third sit down with us. Dr. King's latest novel, "Amelia Earhart Unrescued" is a prequel to his earlier novel "13 Bones" and takes a unique approach in telling the story of the final days of Amelia Earhart's life as she battled the elements, and herself on Nikumaroro Island. Combining his thirty years of research on the "castaway hypothesis" with some creative liberty and elements of fiction, Dr. King provides an interesting look at what Amelia Earhart must have endured if she ended up on Nikumaroro on the morning of July the 2nd 1937. Tonight, as season two of the Chasing Earhart podcast continues, Dr. King joins us via Zoom to discuss his new novel, his thoughts on what might have happened to Amelia Earhart had she successfully returned from her world flight and recent events regarding his career and professional future in Archaeology.

If you’ve been following the Amelia Earhart case at all in the past thirty years you will know the name Ric Gillespie. A little over one year ago we spoke with Ric for a little over two hours about the work that TIGHAR had done to that point on the island if Nikumaroro. It was a big show for us back then as we started out the podcast. Over the course of the last year a lot of developments have been made in the Earhart case on multiple fronts. Tonight on the 53rd episode of the Chasing Earhart podcast, Ric joins us via Zoom from TIGHAR HQ to discuss Betty Klenck’s notebook the radio distress signals report that TIGHAR released just a few days ago on what would have been Amelia Earhart’s 121st birthday and the reasons why he believes that the case of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan is closed.
For the first time in Chasing Earhart history, we release two episodes of the podcast on the same weekend! Episode thirty-three of the show is also a Chasing Earhart first as we welcome back project guests Dr. Tom King and Andrew McKenna of TIGHAR to recap the summer 2017 Niku expedition. Among the topics discussed are the unique twist of bringing forensic dogs to Niku, as well as Dr. Tom King's forthcoming second book, what's next for TIGHAR and the paper that everyone is talking about by Dr. Richard Jantz.
He grew up watching "In Search Of" and someday wanting to search for Amelia Earhart. Fast forward to present day, and he's doing just that. An archeologist with TIGHAR, and an Emmy award winner for “Indy in the 60s”, Gary Quigg has a fascinating back story and an area of expertise that makes him an incredible asset to the Chasing Earhart project. For episode twenty - three of the podcast Gary chats with us about how Amelia came into his life, the work that TIGHAR continues to do on Niku and gives us his professional thoughts on Amelia's last flight and lasting legacy.
Andrew McKenna was the Dive Team leader on the Niku IX expedition. He has been a TIGHAR member since 1990 and currently serves on the organization’s Board of Directors. The son of famous paleontologist Malcolm McKenna, Andrew’s archaeological eye was trained from childhood helping his father on fossil hunts in the Gobi Desert and other remote locations. Andrew participated in underwater and onshore archaeological operations on four previous TIGHAR expeditions to Nikumaroro (2001, 2007, 2010, & 2015) and was on the TIGHAR team that surveyed the Maid of Harlech in Wales in 2007. In Episode Seventeen of the Chasing Earhart podcast, Andrew gives us his thoughts on the work that TIGHAR has done on Nikumaroro over the course of the last 28 years as well as the role underwater exploration and maritime archeology plays in the search for Amelia Earhart, Fred Noonan and their Lockheed Electra.
Ellie Norman is a busy high schooler from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her life is filled with school, sports, music, theater, pets, and family, but there is nothing that interests her more than Amelia Earhart. For as long as she can remember, Amelia has been her inspiration and role model, and Ellie never wants to stop learning about her. From first learning about her in the picture book, Amelia and Eleanor Go For A Ride, to her National History Day Project in 8th grade, this interest has grown into a lifelong passion. Her research culminated in an National History Day project, in which she created a website about Amelia's life and legacy called Soaring for Equality. Since then, she has been getting more involved in the search with TIGHAR and hopes to someday help solve this mystery and continue to spread the story of Amelia Earhart. In episode 15 of the Chasing Earhart podcast, we discuss with Ellie the important of Amelia Earhart as she related to children and young adults, why the world should still care about Amelia, and Amelia's personal impact on Ellie's life. This is what Chasing Earhart is all about. We are honored to present to the world, Ellie Norman!
In part two of my interview with author Mike Campbell about his book "Amelia Earhart: The Truth at Last" we briefly cover again the circumstances of Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan's disappearance. Mike then recounts the timeline of the official narrative and the mainstream acceptance of other ideas like the crashed-and-sank hypothesis and the Gardner Island or Nikumaroro-landing hypothesis and why they have no merit. Mike then talks about the work of TIGHAR and Ric Gillespie and the almost performance art-like expeditions that they've engaged in including using cadaver dogs to try and unearth evidence of Earhart on Nikumaroro many years after her disappearance. Mike also details the dearth of evidence for these ideas and analyzes why the media continues to support them despite their lack of substance. On today's episode, we interview Tom King, the senior archaeologist for the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, or, TIGHAR. They just finished their most recent expedition to the island where they think Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan landed their Lockheed Electra. It's still uncertain what happened after they landed, but, the evidence is building. This episode covers the most recent expedition to Nickamororo Island.
Through their constant promotion of false history, TV networks may have done Amelia Earhart's legacy irreparable harm.
Since the inception of this podcast, people have suggested a number of folks for us to talk to. However there has been one person that's stood out among all the rest. I cannot tell you how many times people have asked me, "When are you going to have Ric Gillespie on?" Well how about now? Ric sat in with us and gave the longest, most in depth interview he's ever given regarding Ms. Earhart and the work that TIGHAR has done over the course of the last 28 years. Ric gives his personal thoughts on his work, Ms. Earhart, her impact and legacy and why he feels she continues to capture the world's attention 80 years after she disappeared.
We are very honored and excited to bring you the very first episode of the C h a s I n g E a r h a r t podcast! Our guest for the inaugural episode, is TIGHAR senior archaeologist Tom King. In this episode we talk with Tom about his background in archaeology and his thoughts and opinions on the work that the TIGHAR team has done over the course of the last 28 years. She's among the most famous missing persons in history. On the eightieth anniversary of Amelia Earhart's disappearance, mystery still shrouds her fate. What happened during the last leg of her round-the-world trek? Theories abound. Perhaps she ran out of fuel, and plunged into the ocean … or was captured by the Japanese. A non-profit international organization, TIGHAR, suggests she was a castaway, and offers up a new analysis of bones found on a Pacific atoll during the time of the Second World War. Their researchers will return to this possible landing spot to seek more clues this summer. We consider these theories and weigh the new evidence surrounding Earhart's puzzling last flight. Also, why are we uncomfortable with open-ended mysteries? Guests: Andrew McKenna– Researcher with TIGHAR (The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery) Claire Maldarelli– Editor at Popular Science Magazine Andrew Maynard– Director of the Risk Innovation Lab, Arizona State University John Norberg– Journalist and former writer on air and space for Purdue University Learn more about your ad choices. Legend: Did Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan live short lives as castaways, or were they lost at sea after running out of fuel and ditching their Lockheed Electra 10E? Maybe they were taken prisoner, interrogated and eventually executed by the Japanese in Saipan? If none of those are right, maybe Amelia changed her identity and lived her days out as a woman named Irene Bolam who settled down in New Jersey? This episode is part 2 of a special about aviation's most famous disappearance of all time, that of Amelia Earhart. The disappearance of Amelia Earhart is one of the worst examples of television promoting pseudohistory.
