All music used with permission by Todd Marcus Quintet. Privacy - Marcus Soltice - Marcus Last Call at Dimitris - MacDonald Glisten - Marcus Everyone comes to jazz in their own way and growing up for me, that pathway to jazz came via the clarinet, bass clarinet and alto clarinet which I will not be playing for you on today's show. So when Todd Marcus and Virginia MacDonald made an appearance on our stage, it was a must attend for me. And they didn't disappoint. Todd Marcus' straight-ahead bass clarinet playing has carved out a unique voice for the instrument in modern jazz. His music swings hard with both a fiery and introspective intensity but also maintains a strong lyrical sensibility. Marcus' compositions draw largely on straight-ahead jazz and classical influences but over recent years have also increasingly explored the Middle-Eastern sounds from his Egyptian-American heritage. But wait, there's more! Todd is joined by Toronto based clarinetist Virginia MacDonald. A lauded clarinetist in her own right, Virginia has performed and composed on over a dozen Juno Award winning albums and helps lead the Canadian Jazz Collective. Featuring Eric Kennedy on Drums, Steven Arnold on Bass, Hannah Mayer on Piano, Virginia MacDonald on Clarinet and Todd Marcus on Bass Clarinet, from July 12th, 2023, it's the Todd Marcus Quintet featuring Virginia MacDonald – Live at the Bop Stop. Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912. Eight years ago, Baltimore erupted in protest after Freddie Gray's funeral. His death sparked calls for police reform and for investment in areas long neglected. What's changed? What concerns do young people have about the future? We speak with a trio devoted to their community: husband and wife, Elder C. W. Harris and Amelia Harris, and musician Todd Marcus. They are all co-founders of Intersection of Change, which works to enrich the social and economic lives of Sandtown residents. Then, young people across Maryland will have the chance to share their ideas and concerns at the 7th Annual Youth Issues Assembly, to be held Saturday, May 6th. We get a preview from Shaleece Williams, Director of Youth Programming for the No Boundaries Coalition; Kathleen Jones, program manager of the group's Youth Organizers; and high school junior Crystal Diala. The following video is an update to the GoFundMe campaign that we launched in 2021 in order to take action against the CFTC for what I felt was a lack of oversight in regards to the silver trading on the COMEX. We were able to contact a lawyer last year who's had success in this type of case, yet unfortunately we were told that there is a high bar for the level of evidence that's required to have a legitimate case, and that what we shared with them did not meet that bar. Additionally, they also expressed that it's difficult to take action against government officials, and that this is something that lawyers are often quite reticent to do. In the follow link is the letter I sent to the lawyers, which was written not only to notify them of what we felt were the infractions, but also phrased so that anyone else could see clearly what we felt had happened, and have the information so that it would be available to everyone should they still want to attempt to file a claim. https://arcadiaeconomics.com/arcadia-economics-kovel-silver-manipulation-evidence-letter/ (you can also see all of the evidence of silver manipulation that we've compiled in the time we've been doing the channel here: https://arcadiaeconomics.com/evidence-room/) Lastly, in terms of the funds that were received, we mentioned in the original GoFundMe that if the CFTC did respond and explain the comments about what happened in the silver market, that we would donate the money to a worthy charitable cause. The CFTC never did answer any of our communications, and therefore we've decided to offer anyone who donated the option to have their money returned, (you can contact me at Chris @ ArcadiaEconomics.com) or else it will go to a charitable cause. This is explained further in the video, and in terms of some causes that we are considering for donations, I've listed a few that I would recommend , and we are also open to other suggestions that people feel are worthy organizations. So if you do have any suggestions, please leave them in the comments below. 'Intersection of Change' Intersection of Change is a community-based non-profit in Baltimore, MD founded in 1996 to address poverty-related challenges in that community. Their missions included helping women overcoming substance abuse and homelessness, providing art classes to adults and children as a tool for empowerment and an alternative to the dangers of drugs and violence, and operating an urban farm that provides working opportunities to citizens returning to the community from incarceration. Though use of bass clarinet in jazz typically leans heavily towards avant-garde and free-jazz styles, Marcus' straight-ahead playing has carved out a unique voice for the instrument in modern jazz. His music swings hard with both a fiery and introspective intensity but also maintains a strong lyrical sensibility. Marcus has annually been voted a Rising Star in Downbeat Magazine's Annual Critics Poll since 2013 on “clarinet” and “miscellaneous instrument” categories and the Washington Post writes, “Listeners won't have any trouble recognizing Marcus's compelling gifts for composing and arranging.” JazzTimes magazine adds, “In Marcus' hands, the bass clarinet is no longer a specialty instrument. Its unique timbral richness becomes incisive, fully capable of forceful expression.” Based in Baltimore, MD, Marcus actively leads small ensembles such as the Todd Marcus Quintet, Quartet, Trio, and Duo as well as his nine piece band The Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra on original compositions and jazz standards. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/support

On this special edition of Midday, six reflections on the April 27, 2015 Uprising, and how the community at the epicenter of that unrest - Sandtown-Winchester - has fared since 25-year-old Freddie Gray died from injuries he sustained while in police custody. At the heart of the protests and the rioting that erupted after Gray's funeral: anger and frustration with a system steeped in racism, inequity and apathy; and a police force that operated with seeming impunity. We begin with a focus on how community-police relations have evolved since 2015: Tom talks with Ashiah Parker, CEO of the Sandtown-based community development group, No Boundaries Coalition, and Sean Yoes, Baltimore Editor of the Afro American Newspaper and author of the book Baltimore After Freddie Gray: Real Stories from One of America’s Great Imperiled Cities. Then, a look at the rich cultural history of Pennsylvania Avenue, which runs from Penn North, the epicenter of the 2015 unrest, down to MLK Jr. Blvd. Tom's guests are Brion Gill, executive director of the new Pennsylvania Avenue Black Arts and Entertainment District and Jim Hamlin, owner of The Avenue Bakery. Finally, Tom talks with Todd Marcus, jazz musician and executive director of the Intersection of Change, and Daria Baylis, coordinator for IOC’s Jubilee Arts training and cultural programs.

(Special Election Notice - 7th Congressional District - Click to Read) We begin with a focus on how community-police relations have evolved since 2015: Tom talks with Ashiah Parker, chief executive officer of the Sandtown-based community development group, No Boundaries Coalition. Ms. Parker is also a member of the Maryland Commission to Restore Trust in Policing, a State commission formed to examine the culture of corruption that allowed the Gun Trace Task Force criminal enterprise to thrive for years. Tom also speaks with Sean Yoes, Baltimore Editor of the Afro American Newspaper and author of the book, Baltimore After Freddie Gray: Real Stories from One of America’s Great Imperiled Cities. Then, a focus on the rich cultural and commercial history of West Baltimore’s Pennsylvania Avenue corridor, which runs from Penn North, the epicenter of the 2015 unrest, down to MLK Jr Blvd, skirting Sandtown and Uptown along the way. Tom's guests are Brion Gill, the executive director of the new Pennsylvania Avenue Black Arts and Entertainment District; and Jim Hamlin, a community native and founding proprietor of The Avenue Bakery on Pennsylvania Avenue. In the final segment, two more perspectives from an innovative community development group that’s been working for more than two decades to move Sandtown forward. Tom talks with Todd Marcus, community activist, jazz musician and executive director of the non-profit Intersection of Change, and with Daria Baylis, coordinator for IOC’s Jubilee Arts training and cultural programs, which have engaged tens of thousands of West Baltimore teens and adults over the years. Audio for this program will be posted by 2pm today.

In its prime, Pennsylvania Avenue was the black entertainment hub of Baltimore, but there’s a whole generation that doesn’t know about that heyday. The Jubilee Arts program aims to bridge the gap. We meet Jade Davis of Jubilee Arts, who teaches a children’s ballet class on the corner of Pennsylvania Ave and Presstman Street, and we get a historical perspective from community organizers Todd Marcus and Amelia Harris of Intersection of Change. We also get two takes on opiate addiction, one from a pharmacy that has to watch out for counterfeit prescriptions, and one from a former drug counselor who’s currently battling his own addiction.
We meet residents of West Baltimore who nurture community and healing through the arts. Jazz composer Todd Marcus draws inspiration from two decades of living and working alongside his neighbors .. with the non-profit ‘Intersection of Change.’ Then Marion Blackwell, manager of the nonprofit ‘Historic Pennsylvania Avenue Main Street,’ talks about restoration of the celebrated Arch Social Club facade and spoken-word poet Brion Gill leads the charge to designate the area as a black arts-and-entertainment district.
The line blurs between art and activism for bass clarinetist and jazz composer Todd Marcus. He perceives music as a way to build community and nuture healing. He joins us to talk about his latest CD, ----On These Streets: A Baltimore Story.---- The songs are inspired by two decades of living and working alongside his neighbors in West Baltimore with the non-profit, ‘Intersection of Change.’
Todd Marcus is an acclaimed bass clarinetist, composer and arranger. He’s also a community activist who has lived and worked in the Sandtown- Winchester neighborhood of West Baltimore for more than 20 years. He’s about to release a new CD, inspired by that historic neighborhood, called On These Streets: A Baltimore Story and recorded with a quintet of some of the area’s finest players. The disc includes compositions that portray the strengths and challenges of Sandtown-Winchester, and its release coincides with the anniversary of the violence and uprising that followed the funeral of Freddie Gray, three years ago Saturday. Todd and his band will be performing a free concert this Fri., Apr. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Harris-Marcus Center on Pennsylvania Ave. in Sandtown. It’s part of an exhibition by Jubilee Arts marking the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the unrest that followed in Baltimore. On May 20, the Quintet will perform another free concert as part of the Community Concerts at Second series. You can also catch them on June 16 at Center Stage.

Since April of 2015, the narrative of the Baltimore uprising has been inextricably woven into the fabric of a broader national conversation about how police relate to communities of color, tempered by more deaths of Black and Brown people at the hands of police, targeted murders of law enforcement officers, and an acrimonious Presidential campaign. This morning, reporter Mary Wiltenburg brings us a Sound Montage from Baltimore’s West Side. Police and protesters: Voices from the Uprising. Then, our Living Questions Series continues with the Rev. Dr. Robert Franklin , the President Emeritus of Morehouse College and Professor of Moral Leadership at Emory University. Followed by Baker Artist Award winner Todd Marcus on the joys of the bass clarinet.
