“I didn't really set out to make Cordelia (Uzo Aduba) quirky. I just wanted to make her distinctive. I just really thought about who I wanted her to be and how I thought [birdwatching] would be an interesting way for her to approach her job. And the very first thing that came to me was just her use of silence and her ability to just be comfortable in situations that might make other people uncomfortable. And it's a quality that I've seen in certain people that I've always admired and been fascinated with because there's nobody quite like Cordelia, but I've seen glimmers of it,” says The Residence creator and showrunner Paul William Davies about creating his lead character Cordelia, a detective who uses her birdwatching skills as framework for solving cases. On today's episode, we talk with Paul William Davies about The Residence, the new Shondaland show streaming on Netflix. Set behind closed doors at the White House, The Residence follows an offbeat detective, Cordelia Cupp (Aduba), as she investigates the murder of a lead member of the White House staff. Davies says the idea came to him watching a hearing on C-SPAN that went into details of the White House's layout. But the show is more than just a game of Clue set in the upstairs-downstairs world of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The show goes deep into character and offers plenty of laughs along the way. Davies talks about what he's learned working with television revolutionary Shonda Rhimes, the intense work that goes into structuring a murder mystery, and shares his advice for anyone who may be working on their own TV mystery. “I think it's really important that you think about what the environment is that you're having this murder mystery in, and making the motive something that feels like it's related to the world that you're working in. In most murder mysteries, the murderer is doing it for money or for love or lust. And that's probably in 98% of the ones that you read. And that's fine… But I think really giving a lot of thought to, what is the motive here? How do I keep it organic to this world and these people, as opposed to it just being grafted onto it, which I think sometimes does happen. Make sure that the killer is doing something that feels like it's part of that world for a reason that is related to that world,” he says. To hear more, listen to the podcast.
To quote our colleague and guest for the week, Parker Thayer, the nonprofit voter registration industry “might not sound like a particularly exciting or important topic, and in an ideal world it wouldn't be either, but unfortunately, it's both.” Earlier this week, Parker testified to the Michigan House Election Integrity Committee on the nonprofit voter registration industry, which he has studied extensively. He joins us to discuss his testimony to the legislature and his research on nonprofit voter registration.Links:Nonprofit VOTE (IW)Voter Registration Project (IW)Partisan Charities Failed to Win in 2024 (VIDEO)Corrupt Voter Registration Scheme PersistsThe Winged Nike of Pennsylvania Ave

When you look at people who are younger than you — particularly teenagers — does your mind ever take you back to yourself at their age? Taylor Johnson's poem “Pennsylvania Ave. SE” performs this feat of time travel, going from a glimpse of two boys on bicycles to a haunting sense memory of what was once so yearned for: to be seen, to be wanted, to be free.Taylor Johnson is proud of being from Washington, D.C. He has received fellowships and scholarships from CALLALOO, Cave Canem, Lambda Literary, VONA, Tin House, Vermont Studio Center, Yaddo, Conversation Literary Festival, Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, and Bread Loaf Environmental Writers' Conference, among others. In 2017, Johnson received the Larry Neal Writers' Award from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. His poems appear in The Baffler, Indiana Review, Scalawag, and The Paris Review, among other journals and literary magazines. His first book, Inheritance, was published in November 2020 by Alice James Books.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.We're pleased to offer Taylor Johnson's poem and invite you to subscribe to Pádraig's weekly Poetry Unbound Substack newsletter, read the Poetry Unbound book, or listen to past episodes of the podcast. Lynn Schmitt's journey began in Chicago, where she cultivated her love for art. After attending Bradley University as a Fine Arts major, she went on to graduate from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and Roosevelt University with a BFA in Interior Design. For 30 years, Lynn thrived as a commercial interior designer, contributing to high-profile projects like O'Hare Airport's Delta Concourse (now Terminal 3), international endeavors in Kuwait and Egypt, and numerous commercial spaces across Chicago. In 2005, while working at A Touch of Amish, a quilt shop in Barrington, IL, Lynn shifted gears. Her first quilt pattern was published in Fons & Porter's magazine in 2006, and in 2010, she launched her own studio, A Different Box of Crayons. Lynn quickly became known for her fresh approach to quilting, blending unexpected fabrics and techniques to push the boundaries of traditional design. Her work has appeared in multiple quilt publications, and she's contributed to several quilt books, including projects for Needl'love. When Lynn isn't designing, she enjoys an active lifestyle, embracing everything from knitting and kayaking to cross-country skiing with her husband, Gerry Gallagher. She's also eager to dive back into her early love of painting through upcoming mixed media art classes. Today, she calls Glen Ellyn, IL home, where her creative spirit continues to inspire those around her. Episode Highlights:(2:27) Early Beginnings: Growing up in Chicago, Lynn discovered her love of sewing early on. She reflects on how taking risks from a young age laid the foundation for her future success.(4:24) Interior Design to Quilting: Lynn shares stories from her career as an interior designer, including favorite projects in the corporate world and abroad. Listen as she describes a cheeky encounter where a newspaper purposely omitted her name from a major article!(11:14) The Name Behind the Studio: Ever wondered about the inspiration behind A Different Box of Crayons? Lynn reveals how her mother used a box of crayons to calm her childhood exuberance.(12:46) From Design to Retail: Hear why Lynn made the leap from commercial interior design to owning her own quilt shop. Plus, get the inside scoop on her 1890 farmhouse. Oh, if those walls could talk!(19:34) Creating an Atmosphere: Visiting A Different Box of Crayons is like stepping into Lynn's home—warm, inviting, and full of character. She shares her secret to creating this cozy atmosphere and explains why she humorously calls herself “the world's worst retailer!”(22:38) Planning a Visit? If you find yourself near Glen Ellyn, IL, don't miss the chance to visit Lynn at 439 Pennsylvania Ave.(22:50) Inside the Studio: Step into Lynn's world of “eclectic textiles,” where fabrics are chosen to “dance” together in perfect harmony.(27:45) No Boundaries: Lynn discusses her latest fabric combinations and how her fearless approach to mixing materials can work for any quilter. Listen to her fascinating take on Victorian-era “crazy quilts” and how they inspire her modern designs.(31:09) Living Like a Leaf in the Wind: Lynn describes her life philosophy—being flexible, open to new ideas, and willing to let life take her where it will.(33:22) The Best Part of Her Day: What does Lynn cherish most about her day-to-day life? There's no one answer!(34:24) What's Next? From dreaming big to pondering her next creative endeavor, Lynn is always thinking ahead.(37:02) The One Question: What question did Lynn wish we had asked? It's all about her greatest joy—her family, which remains at the core of who she is. It's Independence week and Constitutional Attorney, KrisAnne Hall (KrisAnneHall.com) is on with us, from the city of LONDON, for a big SCOTUS review. Chevron, January 6th, Presidential Immunity, Missouri v Biden, and whatever little lessons pop up along the way. You'll have new AirSpace episodes soon, but since they may have found Amelia Earhart's plane(!!!) we thought we'd revisit our episode on her and Eleanor Roosevelt's somewhat unlikely friendship. On a spring evening in 1933, Amelia Earhart took first lady Eleanor Roosevelt on a joyride. Imagine two women—dressed for dinner at the White House (white gloves and all)—stealing away from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave to pilot and co-pilot a nighttime flight to Baltimore. On this episode of AirSpace, we're detailing the high-flying friendship of these two women – from their shared background as social workers to their mutual love of flight and advocacy of women's empowerment and social justice. Amelia and Elanor took the business of being role models seriously, leading by example and using their influence to elevate important societal issues. Talk about an influencer power couple! Thanks to our guests who helped us contextualize their history and friendship – biographers Allida Black and Susan Butler. AirSpace is made possible by the generous support of Olay. Did you know we have a monthly newsletter? Get on the list!

The Haunted White House is a haunted house ambiance sound effects podcast by Ken Steele. We all know the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in D.C. is over 222 years old. Some believe that it could be haunted by Presidents' past and their families. Most likely Joe Biden wanders the lower floors and basement of this old building late at night. We can imagine that these would be some of the scary sounds that old man Biden might hear on a cold stormy night.

How does someone take their missionary life into sales? Harry's background allowed him to quickly see commonalities between emotional intelligence and being a good salesperson. Although it might differ from the common stereotype, Harry explains how it is possible to listen, be a good human, and still make sales in his new book, Selling With Dignity. Listen Here!Buy SELLING WITH DIGNITY#SponsoredConnect with Harry:LinkedInWebsiteBio: Harry SpaightHarry Spaight is a highly sought-after Keynote Speaker, Author, and Coach. After spending several years in mission work, Harry took the principles he learned and applied them to a career in sales. Loving others, listening, and treating others the way you want to be treated, speaking with tact, persistence, patience, kindness, and more. Harry transferred the skills he developed while working with and serving others over to the world of corporate sales. With very little business acumen, Harry applied the principles from the Good Book as to how to treat people. Those two thousand-year-old principles still proved to be practical. It was all about serving others. Harry believed that people would buy from him if he had a servant's mindset. The principles worked. Harry eventually moved and was leading a team of sales professionals in downtown Washington DC, just a few blocks from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Would the principles work in such a competitive market as Washington DC? The answer is yes. The principles are timeless. Now, after spending over twenty years as an Award-Winning Multi-million Dollar Sales Producer and Sales Leader in the extremely competitive arena of corporate sales, Harry knows firsthand how to be successful in sales and lead winning teams. While many sales leaders choose the cozy corner office, Harry preferred to be in the street, sleeves rolled up so to speak, with his team. Harry is one who leads by example, knowing it is better to get in the trenches with his people than to bark commands at them. He spearheaded sales teams to achieve the amazing success that resulted in over a hundred million dollars in business. Harry has a “Serve Others First” mindset, which is largely due to having served for over a decade as a missionary. Harry's understanding of clients, sales professionals, and Sales Leaders in building trusting relationships gives people the confidence in putting his knowledge and experience into practice. Harry is the author of Selling with Dignity. He is the co-host of a Top 20 podcast “Lead Sell Grow, The Human Experience”. He works with sales teams and executives to elevate their craft of selling and leading with dignity. Personal Revival, Nation Awakening & Generational Reformation Once upon a time, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave in DC was a house of honor and dignity. The residence was a regal monument for our nation's citizens. America's House was a shining beacon of hope, freedom and liberty. Tragically, in our more recent history, it has become a house of filth and abominations. The White House is to be for more than just a house of authority—but a house of true honor. It was only weeks ago, that the White House and its lawn was filled with an immoral parade of pride and debauchery. Now cocaine was discovered in the house. We are in deep trouble as a nation and the lawlessness is at an epic high. Where are we going in America? The White House desperately needs to be thoroughly cleansed and its atmosphere purged and redeemed by the fire of The Lord — His great grace and mercies. It's time to clean the house! This prodigal nation must return to the covenant-keeping God. It's not over for America. Anne Wiggins Brown — whom we hear at the opening of this segment singing "Summertime" from the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess — is one of the many great artists to come out of Baltimore's rich musical community. Porgy and Bess composer George Gershwin chose the then-23 year-old Brown to sing the title role of Bess in his opera, a role that helped launch her storied career. This weekend, Opera Baltimore will celebrate the great soprano with a festival and concert. Among the featured performers will be the great soprano, composer and educator, Adrienne Danrich. Joining Tom now in Studio A with a preview is the Artistic and General Director of Opera Baltimore, Julia Cooke. The Opera on the Avenue festival begins at 10:30 Saturday morning just off Pennsylvania Ave on Cumberland Street.
