Learning from the King: Sales Lessons & Musings from Jeffrey Gitomer @gitomer I am beyond excited and humbled to share this episode and Q & A with Jeffrey Gitomer. He is the King of Sales. If you're in sales, he is a household name. He literally wrote The Little Red Book of Selling and has published a number of different books. He is the author of the recently published ... in fact, published last week ... came out, Truthful Living: The First Writings of Napoleon Hill. Here's just a snippet: ----more---- I recognized that you cannot be a great sales person until you become a great person. Those are the benchmarks. You can't become a great dad, until you become a great person ... or a great mom, until you become a great person ... or a great secretary, until you become a great person. Whatever it is that you're looking to do, you have to be a person before you become an it. And attitude and beliefs are some of the fundamentals in that process. Very few sales courses teach you about self-confidence. They're trying to teach you some technique that pisses other people off. Find the pain. What's your pain? The answer is, "None of your business." So, stop tryin' to extract things outta me. Why don't you try and find the pleasure? He has won numerous speaking awards. Podcast Highlights Who is Jeffrey Gitomer? Jeffrey grew up in a family of business people and identifies as a businessman, not an entrepreneur. He had some great genes and was born smart enough to realize that he had to decide what to do with his mind. Everyday when he wakes up, he always does one or all of the following five things: Read, write, prepare, think, and create. How much do you do for yourself when you wake up? Everyone has a choice about what they do with their allocated time. Entrepreneur vs. Businessman A businessman is someone who has been in a family that has been in business for themselves for generations. Entrepreneurs are people who buy a franchise. Why do sales have a bad reputation? Jeffrey has done the work to understand sales and has sold millions of dollars worth of goods. Cold calling is a terrible place to make a sale, but a great place to learn selling. People don’t like to be sold, they like to buy. You have to engage them enough so they want to buy. Pressure, guilt, and manipulation are the reasons why sales have a bad reputation. It’s the classic case of the used car salesman. If you are consistent in your value message offerings, your business will grow. Anything less than weekly is not enough, you have to find ways to keep the message going. The art of sales is making the other person feel like they aren’t being sold. Letting Go Of The Sales Process The first thing you have to realize is that you have to let go of some of the things that you think the business won’t be able to live without. Napoleon Hill Jeffrey read Think and Grow Rich 10 times in 1972, after a while he understood Napoleon Hill’s philosophy and beliefs, while also working with a few other sales people on the same path. It all comes down to giving value first. There is life enhancing elements in the book that will make anyone who reads smile and do better. What do you want to do and how bad do you want to do it? Then, what are you willing to do to fulfill that emotion? Whoever wins, desired it more. Most people don’t have self confidence or self belief unless it is foisted on them by someone else. Deposit before withdrawal, give without expectation of anything in return. The best way to get a referral is to give one. There are five words that define someone’s ability to become successful: Imagination, desire, enthusiasm, confidence, and concentration. Concentration is the glue that makes everything happen. If you’re enthusiastic and committed, people will buy from you. Do things for love, not for money. Become so committed, you become emotional about it. Thoughts become things. Everyone has their issues in life and I try to pay attention to what everyone needs for me as a father or grandfather, but I first make certain that I'm okay myself. I can't be the best dad in the world unless I become the best person in the world. And you can substitute dad for anything else you want: driver, teacher, writer, whatever. It starts out with you as a great person. Thoughts on Breathing I used to breathe a lot better, I think when I was meditating. Meditation is one of the things where you get in the habit of it and then you get out of the habit of it. Easy to do, easy not to do - Jim Rohn. I should breathe better. The one thing that I have learned to do is breathe as a speaker, so I speak from my diaphragm rather than from my throat. I'm well aware of that process because I've had a couple of throat operations. Heredity has caused a couple of polyps on my vocal folds and after they were removed I literally went to speech therapy to relearn how to fill my diaphragm with air and then expel it as I'm speaking and take that breath before I start to speak again. So it's, it's a habit now. I guess I probably concentrate on breathing more than most people without actually thinking about it. You said, you know, we don't really like Jews. And he cocked his fist at me and another kid, Robbie Alleger stepped in front of me and knocked this kid down to the ground with one punch. And we're still friends. Alleger and I are still friends. The guy that picked on me died just within a decade or two. So when Don Green gave Jeffrey a collection of Hill’s greatest, unpublished, personal notes and asked about an annotation project, Jeffrey jumped on the opportunity. This two-year endeavor has culminated in the “Truthful Living: The First Writings of Napoleon Hill” (available for pre-order on Amazon and available everywhere October 30). Jeffrey explains that the longer something lasts, the longer something will continue to last, and Hill’s advice on sales, business, and life are invaluable lessons to be learned. Key #1 - Maintaining an attitude of success makes all the difference Napoleon Hill’s keys to success start with mindset and attitude. Going far beyond feel-good thinking, maintaining an attitude of success allows you to achieve greatness by giving you confidence in your product, business, and career. This confidence then allows you to focus on developing 5 main characteristics outlined by Hill. Here they are. Imagination Desire Enthusiasm Self-confidence Concentration You’ll notice these 5 characteristics have nothing to do with sales specifically. A success mindset is transferable to every aspect of your life, and it starts with positivity and always keeping your end-goal in mind. Future Squared with Steve Glaveski - Helping You Navigate a Brave New World
Jeffrey Gitomer is an author, speaker, podcast host, entrepreneur and the self-professed King of Sales. Jeffrey has penned a number of books including the best-selling Sales Bible, which I am personally a huge fan of, the Little Red Book of Sales as well as Customer Satisfaction is Worthless. His forthcoming book,Truthful Living: The First Writings of Napoleon Hill, represents a brief departure from sales books. You’ll likely be familiar with Napoleon Hill as the author of the magnum opus Think and Grow Rich which went on to influence generations of people and personal development gurus that came after him. The book explores Hill’s self-help legacy, his long-lost original notes, letters and lectures - now compiled, edited and annotated for the modern reader. If you’re looking for a proverbial kick up the backside, then you’ve come to the right place. Jeffrey and I riff on many of Hill’s teachings and our own personal observations of them, and touch on topics such as: Adversity being a blessing, not a curse The magic key - a formula that will open the door for health and wealth; and Why whatever your goals - it will never be ‘the right time’ With that, strap yourselves in for a conversation that I really enjoyed with the one and only, Jeffrey Gitomer. Topics Discussed: Who was Napoleon Hill and why was he such a seminal figure Napoleon Hill’s influence on Jeffrey’s own lifeHow the first writings of Napoleon Hill were uncovered Positive affirmationsIt will never be the right time Through struggles comes growth Why success is a choiceHow to thinkAdversity is a blessingDelaying gratification The magic key Why you create your own luck Individualism v collectivism Responsibility v entitlement Why you should give first with no expectation of getting in return The value of learning how to learn Operating on 5 year windows Keeping a positive attitude Show Notes: Gitomer Learning Academy: Gitomer.com Sell or DIe podcast with Jennifer Gluckow: sellordiepodcast.com @gitomer on twitter Pre-order Truthful Living: https://amzn.to/2PAEL74 Get The Sales Bible: https://amzn.to/2wjUn63 Get Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich: https://amzn.to/2N98L8q I hope you enjoyed this episode.
