The Eastern Heights Middle School (EHMS) Drama Club gives students in fifth through eighth grade real experience in theater behind the scenes and in front of audiences. But even more important are the bonds the students form as members of the tight-knit group, and the confidence and poise they exude on stage delivering complex dialogue, drawing audiences into each story. EHMS director, Charlene Hartley, has built the club up from just a few members to more than 20-strong, and it continues to grow each school year. The club kicked off its 2022-2023 season with the musical, "Aladdin Jr.," to rave reviews. They are now showing off their dramatic skills in the play, "Walk Two Moons." The production drew so much interest that Charlene had to double cast the roles to allow as many students as possible to participate in the show. We caught up with a handful of the EHMS student actors to hear all about their latest production, "Walk Two Moons." The performance takes place March 8 and 9, 7:30 p.m. at the Elyria High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available online here!   It's a great day to be a Pioneer! Thanks for listening. Sharon Creech's Walk Two Moons was published in 1994 and went on to win the celebrated Newbery Medal in 1995. It's the story of thirteen-year-old Sal's journey — both literally and metaphorically — to learn (and accept) the truth of her mother's recent disappearance, to empathize with the struggles that her peers are going through, and to find her own identity in the chaos of life. Walk Two Moons is populated with lovable characters and perfectly poignant moments… to say nothing of the beautiful writing!Guest Katharine Scrivener joins Alli to discuss everything from guilt and grief to motherhood and mental health. The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Julia Jordan is an American playwright, television writer, and screenwriter. Her plays include St. Paul, Nightswim, Summer Of The Swans, Tatjana in Color, Dark Yellow, and Walk Two Moons. In 2000, her short film "The Hat", debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. Her second short won best short film at the Jackson Hole Film Festival in 2008. She is a Lortel Fellow, Juilliard Playwright Fellow, Manhattan Theater Club Fellow, Member of the Dramatists Guild of America Council and New Dramatists. She is a founder and the executive director of The Lillys, created in 2010 to honor female playwrights and address the shortage of plays by women that get produced in America. She founded The Lillys and has been instrumental in The Count.  Don’t know what The Count is? Well, listen in and hear her tell you in her own words, as well as . . . How the most important thing her first writing teacher did was NOT discuss the quality of her work. What a Pulitzer Prize winner told her to do with her main character to get her play produced . . . and it worked . . . unfortunately (you’ll hear why). Why she thinks about her audience when she writes. What Broadway means to her . . . and why she doesn’t care if her work gets there. (Which will probably be why she DOES get there, btw.) The shocking statistics about gender in the theater and how she is helping change that (and what you can do to help).   This episode of The Producer’s Perspective Podcast is sponsored by Daniel Rader Photo. In our ongoing quest to become better librarians by reading every genre (regardless of our actual interest) we tackle Aboriginal, Indigenous, and First Nations Books.   This episode we're looking at another thematic genre/non-genre, so join us as we discuss the problems of reading aboriginal or indigenous characters written by non-indigenous authors, how we really didn’t get enough education in First Nations/Native Americans in school, and why it’s hard to find Australian Aboriginal or Sami books in Vancouver libraries. Maybe start with: This article by Indigenous Foundations - an information resource on Aboriginal peoples in Canada from the University of British Columbia This article on the legacy of the child welfare system on Canadian Aboriginal Communities from the First Nations newspaper, First Nations Drum The plain ol’ Wikipedia entry on the Sixties Scoop Remaining Aztec Codices JK Rowling under fire via CBC and The Guardian El Supremo Dictador, who forced racially integrated marriage in Paraguay “In order to destroy the colonial racial hierarchy which had also discriminated against him because of his mixed blood, Francia forbade Europeans from marrying other Europeans, thus forcing the élite to choose spouses from among the local population.” Originally discovered via this comic The Super Shamou comic and a rather scrambled safety video! Matthew Henson, the first African-American explorer in the arctic, and the review of the (problematic) comic recently written about him That moon landing was sooooooooo fake! Podcasts Métis in Space podcast from Indian and Cowboy podcasting Ryan McMahon (who pretty much is Indian and Cowboy podcasting) is also doing some amazing podcasting on Truth and Reconciliation in Canada in the Red Man Laughing podcast and just generally has a lot of stuff to say that’s worth hearing SS Librarianship and guest Michael Wynne on cataloguing First Nations and Aboriginal materials Questions Are there any First Nations mysteries? Are there Indigenous/Aboriginal specific genres? Does your library have an Aboriginal/Indigenous/First Nations section, sticker, or other method of bringing attention to these titles? Is there anything that we missed, misunderstood, or misspoke on?
