On today's episode, I talk to comics writer Jason Aaron. Originally from Piney Woods, Alabama, Jason started writing comics professionally after winning a Marvel Comics talent search contest in 2001. This opened the door for him, and soon after in 2006, Vertigo published his first major work The Other Side, which netted him an Eisner Award. Since then, Jason has written acclaimed runs on both mainstream and his own creator-owned comics, some of which include Wolverine and the X-Men, The Punisher, The Avengers, Thor, Scalped, Once Upon a Time at the End of the World, Southern Bastards and many, many more. Currently, Jason is writing the fantastic Superman reboot Absolute Superman, as well as a brilliant Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series for IDW! It finally happened: Claudine Gay is out as president of Harvard after a tireless guerrilla journalism campaign led by the Manhattan Institute's Chris Rufo, who conclusively exposed Gay's fraudulence as a scholar. But is plagiarism just par for the course? Seth and Spencer consider the low, low bar that Gay failed to clear, and where the fight over higher ed will take us next. Plus: migrants continue to flood unchecked across the border, and the powder keg in the Middle East grows ever more flammable. What will come of it all? The editors discuss before insisting for the first (but not the last) time in 2024 that you read the damn site! This episode is presented by Carolina Readiness Supply – We're only three days into the year, but the leading contender for The 2024 Dumbassery Award has GOT to be the Associated Press which wrote: Christopher Rufo, a conservative activist who helped orchestrate the effort against Gay, celebrated her departure as a win in his campaign against elite institutions of higher education. On X, formerly Twitter, he wrote “SCALPED,” as if Gay was a trophy of violence, invoking a gruesome practice taken up by white colonists who sought to eradicate Native Americans. Ethics in the Gutter: Empathy and Historical Fiction in Comics (Ohio State UP, 2017) explores an often-overlooked genre of graphic narratives: those that fictionalize historical realities. While autographics, particularly those that place the memoirist in the context of larger cultural conversations, have been the objects of sustained study, fictional graphic narratives that—as Linda Hutcheon has put it—both “enshrine and question” history are also an important area of study. By bringing narratology and psychological theory to bear on a range of graphic narratives, Kate Polak seeks to question how the form utilizes point of view and the gutter as ethical tools that shape the reader's empathetic reactions to the content. This book's most important questions surround how we receive and interpret representations of history, considering the ways in which what we think we know about historical atrocities can be at odds with the convoluted circumstances surrounding violence. Beginning with a new look at Watchmen, and including examinations of such popular series as Scalped and Hellblazer as well as Bayou and Deogratias, the book questions how graphic narratives create an alternative route by which to understand large-scale violence. Ethics in the Gutter explores how graphic narrative representations of violence can teach readers about the possibilities and limitations of empathy and ethics. Dr. Kate Polak is a writer, artist, performer, and scholar specializing in comics, poetry, 21st century women writers, and the literatures of genocide. She is an instructor and research associate in the English Department at Florida Atlantic University, where she teaches writing and literature, focusing on poetry, the representation of violence, and graphic narrative. Lance Reddick, the voice actor for Commander Zavala in Destiny, passed away earlier this year. Zavala is a major character in the Destiny universe and his voice has been a staple of the game since its inception. Bungie has announced that Keith David, a veteran actor with a long history in video games, will be the new voice actor for Zavala in the upcoming expansion, The Final Shape. Bungie is confident that David will be able to capture the essence of Zavala and continue his legacy.Renowned comic book writer Jason Aaron, celebrated for his Marvel work, including runs on titles like X-Men, Thor, and The Avengers, is revisiting his beginnings at DC's Vertigo imprint with a new venture, “Batman: Off-World.” Teaming up with artist Doug Mankhe, Aaron is taking Batman on an unprecedented interstellar journey, where the Caped Crusader faces an extraterrestrial foe in a daring solo mission into the cosmos. Aaron's deep connection with DC comics and his excitement to contribute to the main DC Universe mark a significant return to the publisher after his earlier projects like The Other Side and Scalped. The release of “Batman: Off-World” on November 21 has both fans and the author eagerly anticipating this new chapter in the DC universe.
This week Tony is joined by comics writer Dave Cranna to talk about the first trade of the Vertigo series 'Scalped'. Written by Jason Aaron with art by R.M. Guerra and Lee Loughridge. This is a series that is both incredibly violent and gritty but also a masterclass in writing, plotting and art. You can find more of Dave's comics and his excellent Glass City series by clicking on this link. Many thanks for listening.

This week, we're talking about Scalped, by Jason Aaron and R. M. Guéra, the gritty and emotionally intense (but also controversial) crime series published by Vertigo. Spoilers do abound in this episode, so be aware of that. However, even if you haven't read Scalped, we hope that our discussion will give you insight into whether or not the series could be something you'd be interested in checking out. At some point in the relatively near future (the word "relatively" is doing a lot of work here, depending on when the world ends), we'll present our DC Top 25 countdown on our podcast, much like how we did our Marvel Top 25. Before then, there's a small plethora of other DC books that didn't really make our final list but we still have enough love for, and we basically just made up an excuse to talk about the comics we wanna talk about. If you have any thoughts, comments, questions, or corrections, we're here. Feel free to hit us up on our socials, or email us! We have a Linktree here: linktr.ee/betweenthegutters
This week on A Novel Console, Chirs and Karradyne are joined once again by the mythical Burgerchamp! He recommends some books and games he's been enjoying and they make fun of Chris's aversion to the library. Then Chris, Karradyne and Burgerchamp get chased by fish with legs when they read Junji Ito's Gyo. Afterwards Chris and Burgerchamp inherit Dracula's power of dominion when they finish Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. From 2010, right before SDCC...On this episode of Word balloon, Jason Aaron is back to talk about finding the voices of the characters he writes. From discovering his take on Spider-Man for the Astonishing Spider-Man Wolverine book, and the current arc in Wolverine Weapon X. You'll hear plenty about the current Deathlok/Captain America story. We also talk a lot about the upcoming reboot of the Wolverine solo book in September, including the opening arc called "Wolverine In Hell". You'll hear about Jason's versions of a senior citizen Frank Castle, and year one depictions of The Kingpin and Bullseye in The Max Punisher series, and why Aaron felt the tone of the Max book had to change from Garth Ennis's run. Plus details about Scalped, Jason's ongoing crime series for Vertigo.
We talk Scalped, being too ugly to write about Marilyn Monroe, Shinto, the earth being your cousin, the stories we tell our children, the brutality of interconnection, endless moral complication, Ocarina of Time, finding the thesis statement for Princess Mononoke in the Nausicaä manga, having no villains, giraffe documentaries, the powerless sadness of nature, watching our wives give birth, food bigotry, Daoist books, leading without leadership, how to make books addictive, horror writers being too scared to read a book, showing Princess Mononoke to children, A-Salt Gun, how to kill bugs, the weakness of peanut allergies, and flying with professional wrestlers.
