Harley Stroh, legendary RPG writer, Skate Punker, and an incredible Judge (or GM for the non-DCCers out there)! Author of moderns classics like Sailors of the Starless Sea, Doom of Savage Kings, Blades Against Death, Journey to the Center of Aereth, Tower of the Black Pearl, Peril on the Purple Planet, and more recently, the impressive The Music of the Spheres is Chaos, a massive boxed-set adventure with a spinning dungeon map! His work in the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG line is super inspiring, and his adventures are some of my favorites of all time! I've been a fan of Harley since I bought my first printing of the limited edition gold skull DCC RPG that came with Doom of Savage Kings, a very pulpy, and open-ended adventure that set very high standards for what I would expect of adventure for now on. I played this adventure so many times, and continue to do so, and I am always impressed how different every time can be. Anyway, in this chat we talked about many things, from how sneakily weird Harley actually is, how he tries to write amazing adventures just to keep up with the fantastical art created by Doug Kovacs, how he runs his finger over his keyboard while writing, and so many other weird and wonderful things. I loved to have this chance to talk to him for almost 2 hours, it was a real pleasure. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Listen up, and get weird with us! A meditation and time of prayer on being ready to be a true offering for God's use. Guided by two February excerpts of Oswald Chamber's "My Utmost for His Highest," we can choose to find our identity in God, with our will choose to be broken, and conclude by telling God we are ready. It is good to humbly sit in reverence and awe before the God of the Universe.www.incense-ptl.comeric@incense-ptl.comTexts:Phillipians 2:12-182 Timothy 4:1-8February 5 and 6; "My Utmost for His Highest; Oswald Chambers.Tracks:"Beside the Starless Sea" by Moments"Prologue" by Shimmer"In Motion" by Moments"Sincerity" by Acreage
That's right, folks, this year I want to try something new on the podcast and within the SincerelyBlueJay community - a book club! With a book a month! And January's book is the Starless Sea by Erin Morganstern. Currently I am re-listening to the full cast audiobook on Audible and rereading and reannotating my physical thrift store copy. Though, I do have an autographed hard cover copy - and as I said in the episode if anyone can get a copy of the UK gold hard cover for me - I'd love you forever and then some. It is widely available - no matter what your book buying preferences are or how you like to read! So pick up a copy and get reading! Mid-way through the month we will be back to look at some of the skills Morganstern brings to the table in terms of writing and world-building and at the end of the month I'm hoping to have some guests join me for a full book cluby discussion. If you'd like to get involved use #LTFBookClub and #LTFStarlessSea and of course you can comment on each book club episode, tag me on social media, or add to the conversation in my posts throughout the month. If this goes well we'll do a poll for February's book and keep it going all year long! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sincerelybluejaypoetry/message

The episode that Julia and Maggie have been SO excited to release is finally here! We have been aching to talk about 'The Starless Sea' since we first started the podcast. This book means a lot to the both of us and we loved diving into a fantasy all about the importance, the intricacy, and the art of stories. We also talk about secret menus, literary masquerades, and Dame Judi Dench! If that doesn't intrigue let me also just say...Owl King. Was that mysterious enough? Are you ready to join us for an hour of sweet sorrows and tales from an enchanted world? As always, thank you for being a Novel Friend.
Jillian recommends A Soul to Keep by Opal Reyne. Maggie recommends The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. Deep dive into indie author self-publishing and a vivid description of a monster's....pianist. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Also hear her preview of the library's many summer activities, including a summer reading program to earn chances for raffle prizes, live readings of "Shorts Out Loud," and much more. A mere nine months on from where we left off, the survivors of our hopelessly ill-equipped band of peasants - along with some new friends they make along the way - bring it to the Chaos Lord and his hordes of beastmen atop his cursed ziggurat, in the classic DCC funnel module "Sailors On The Starless Sea". NOTE: We had some audio issues during the first 20 minutes or so of this episode. Sorry! https://goodman-games.com/store/product/dungeon-crawl-classics-67-sailors-on-the-starless-sea-2/
Maggie is off-the-walls excited about these two books! Join her as she drags Cam along through the magical worlds that Erin Morgenstern and Susanna Clarke expertly created. Romanticism, atmosphere, beauty, and surrealism unite these two stories, while narrative style and story structure create vastly different reading experiences. Both books feature male protagonists written by female authors, and both unabashedly engage in “the meta” in ways that make your head spin. These two books are a triumph, and we hope you enjoy Maggie's enthusiastic analysis coupled with Cam's (insightful but stuffy-nosed) perspective and reactions. "I hate this ball pit. This is easily the worst one I've ever been in." "You've never been to a McDonalds in East Dubuque." Due to some unavoidable interruptions we find ourselves unable to do part two of our playthrough of Sailors on the Starless Sea, and so we take another band of hapless rubes for a jaunt into another Dungeon Crawl Classics funnel game. This time we explore all the fun of the fair in David Baity's "The Carnival of the Damned", published by Purple Sorcerer Games. Will there be a part two? Who knows? Will there be profanity and wholly unnecessary innuendo? Oh hell yes. https://purplesorcerer.com/carnival.php https://goodman-games.com/store/product/dungeon-crawl-classics-role-playing-game-4th-printing-copy/
Fifteen hopelessly ill-equipped peasants foolishly decide to have fun storming the castle in the, er, classic DCC funnel module "Sailors On The Starless Sea". Will they survive? Spoiler alert - it's part one. How many will survive? Ah, now that's another story entirely. https://goodman-games.com/store/product/dungeon-crawl-classics-67-sailors-on-the-starless-sea-2/
Welcome to Working Title, a podcast where two writer friends stumble through books we love, looking for writing secrets. Join us as we read books that were foundational to our own writing (flashbacks), explore themes across genres and books (plot twist) and talk about whatever is inspiring us (red herring). In this episode, Leah and Dana explore what libraries in fiction can reveal about characters and our relationships with stories. Libraries are so much more than places where books are stored they are symbols (and often literal places) of community; the hold histories and futures. Using The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern and The Book of M by Peng Shepherd as pillars in the conversation, Dana and Leah discuss the range of the idea. Books mentioned: The Starless Sea by Ering Morgenstern The Book of M by Peng Shepherd The Midnight Library by Matt Haig The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman The Library of Legends by Janie Chang

Welcome to the first episode of Parallel Fiction. Jeff and Heather review stories of New Beginnings to commemorate the start of Parallel Fiction. Heather will be talking about fantasy novel The Starless Sea, while Jeff will wax on/wax off the 80's classic The Karate Kid. They break down the story and theme of these stories and give recommendations of what else you may enjoy. Written by Erin Morgenstern, the Starless Sea covers the possibility of endless stories and countless new beginnings. Following the character of Zachary, the "rabbit hole" is a sea of honey that carries the characters through a fantasy where anything can happen. Morgenstern's debut novel Night Circus is also available wherever books are sold. Heather relates the telling of these stories and the notion that nothing is ever lost as long as you keep it in your heart to that of losing a loved one, and holding on to innocence you may outgrow with age. Fun Fact: Erin Morgenstern is also a painter specializing in acrylic! Director by John Avildsen, the standard bearer of old school big fight movies such as Rocky, lends his expertise to Robert Mark Kamen's (Co-creator of the Taken franshise) original screenplay. Jeff takes us through the events that lead spunky New Jersey teen Daniel LaRusso from punching bag to Karate champion. The Karate Kid shows us that new beginnings can be tough, and that the help of friends and family can go a long way to make anywhere feel like home. Overcoming adversary and counting on others bring this story to life. Jeff points out how powerful the montage segments & unexpected break out performance from Pat Morita make this movie a timeless classic. Did you know? The iconic Karate Kid headband was improvised by Morita, who had the handkerchief in his pocket the day of filming. Tune in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each story, how The Karate Kid and The Starless Sea compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each. Share this episode with anyone who you think would enjoy it and let us know your thoughts on these inspiring New Beginnings! We're approaching DCC# 100 and we're also approaching Spellburn 100! What better way to celebrate an anniversary than to reflect on some great stuff of the past 8 years!
