Across the federal government, the number of federal workers fired under Donald Trump and DOGE currently stands at over a hundred thousand. Some of those workers have turned to a website called We the Builders. It was created by federal workers associated with the U.S. Digital Service as a resource for employees who have lost their jobs, who are afraid of losing their jobs, or who have a whistleblower complaint.  The Radio Hour's Adam Howard spoke with two of the site's creators: Kate Green, who recently left the federal government for a job in the private sector, and a web developer who identifies himself as Milo – using a pseudonym, since he is still employed in the government.  “Both the beauty and the tragedy is that the work the government does is largely invisible,” as Milo put it. “You don't always know that it is USDA inspectors who are working in the slaughterhouses, who are making sure that work is being done in a safe and sanitary fashion … But they give a damn about making sure that food is safe. If that goes away, that's not immediately visible to people. And they don't necessarily know that these people have lost their jobs or that food is going to be less safe until people get hurt or worse. And so, we want to make sure that people start to understand what the cuts in these programs actually mean.”Plus, this year, The New Yorker's centennial, we're revisiting some classics from the magazine's past with a series called Takes. The novelist Michael Cunningham was already in his forties when Annie Proulx's short story “Brokeback Mountain”—about two young men working as shepherds who unexpectedly fall in love—was published. “The New Yorker was not the first big-deal magazine to run a story about gay people. It wasn't, like, ‘Oh, my God, a story, finally!,' ” Cunningham recalls. But it made a huge impression nevertheless. “It was a story in The New Yorker about two gay men that was first and foremost a love story. . . . I didn't want to just read it; I wanted to absorb this story in a more lasting way.”  Excerpts of Annie Proulx's “Brokeback Mountain” were read by Monica Wyche.

Step into a world of impactful theatre as we unpack the latest podcast episode. We kick things off with Grenfell: in the words of survivors at the National Theatre. This powerful verbatim play draws directly from the testimonies of the residents at the heart of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. With six years passed since the devastating event, the interviews with survivors and bereaved individuals lay bare the shocking impact of the failures that led to this national disaster. Gillian Slovo masterfully weaves these voices into a narrative that raises urgent questions about prevention and justice. Co-directed by Phyllida Lloyd and Anthony Simpson-Pike, the play delves into the resilience of a community fighting for justice, forming part of the National Theatre's ongoing creative engagement with North Kensington.Switching gears, we dive into the sensational world of Horrible Histories: Terrible Tudors. Back by popular demand for a second year, this West End hit brings history to life in a hilariously gruesome manner. From the notorious Henries to the treacherous reign of Elizabeth, audiences are treated to legends, lies, and the nastiest bits of the torturous Tudors. Prepare for headless wives, punch-ups with the Pope, Bloody Mary, and even surviving the Spanish Armada. It's a history lesson with a twist that's sure to keep you entertained and educated.Lastly, we delve into the world premiere of Brokeback Mountain, a poignant new play with music based on Annie Proulx's acclaimed short story. Under the direction of Jonathan Butterell, the production stars Broadway and silver screen names Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges, both making their West End debuts. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of 1963 Wyoming, where Ennis and Jack's lives are forever altered by their time working on Brokeback Mountain. Dan Gillespie Sells' emotionally charged Country and Western songs beautifully underscore this tale of forbidden love and its heartrending consequences over two decades. The production also features the remarkable Eddi Reader and her onstage Country and Western band, adding an additional layer of musical depth.Get ready to immerse yourself in these thought-provoking and captivating theatrical experiences in the latest episode.

Venice Architecture Biennale: the exhibition at the British Pavilion this year draws on traditions practised by different diaspora communities in the UK - such as Jamaicans playing dominoes and Cypriots cooking outside - and explores how they occupy space, so this can be included in planning the built environment. In her debut short story collection, Sidle Creek (Melville House, 2023), Jolene McIlwain skillfully interrogates the myths and stereotypes of the mining, mill, and farming towns where she grew up. With stories that take place in diners and dive bars, town halls and bait shops, McIlwain's writing explores themes of class, work, health, and trauma, and the unexpected human connections of small, close-knit communities. All the while, the wild beauty of the natural world weaves its way in, a source of the town's livelihood – and vulnerable to natural resource exploitation. With an alchemic blend of taut prose, gorgeous imagery, and deep sensitivity for all of the living beings within its pages, Sidle Creek will sit snugly on bookshelves between Annie Proulx, Joy Williams, and Louise Erdrich. For today's COBT, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Liberty Energy CEO Chris Wright. Chris is a fascinating energy mind - his background includes MIT and UC Berkeley mechanical and electrical engineering degrees as well as a broad-based life-long passion for all forms of energy. He was an early shale pioneer and today is Chairman and CEO of Liberty. Chris also dedicates a significant amount of his time talking to policymakers globally about what he feels are the choices society should be making in energy. For the second year, Chris has helped drive the Liberty ESG report to be not just a report on Liberty but more broadly an analysis of energy ESG globally. It's absolutely worth your time and very digestible.  As you will hear, Chris lays out the three global challenges that he sees for energy and environmental policies including solving energy poverty globally (replacing wood and dung with clean cooking fuels could save 2 to 3 million people from death annually), pushing towards reliable and affordable energy systems with minimal environmental impact, and addressing climate change thoughtfully. As we discuss these objectives, you will hear us touch on a broad range of issues and factors. When discussing what the world of energy looks like in ten years, Chris had a really great and unique answer (and goal): "net zero poverty by 2050." It was a stimulating and exciting session with Chris today and we can't thank him enough for joining us.In our upfront discussion,  Mike Bradley summed up bond, commodity and equity performance from the past week and the loud reactions to the recent OPEC+ meeting. Colin Fenton highlighted an important update from the London Metals Exchange concerning Russian metal exports and shared his takeaways from Annie Proulx's new book, " Fen, Bog and Swamp."  Ryan Zorn, Veriten's Senior Contributor, also joined and asked for Chris's “energy discussion forecast” beyond the elections. Thanks to you all.
