We meet Ekow Eshun, leading curator, writer and broadcaster to discuss his new book The Strangers. In the western imagination, a Black man is always a stranger. Outsider, foreigner, intruder, alien. One who remains associated with their origins irrespective of how far they have travelled from them. One who is not an individual in their own right but the representative of a type. What kind of performance is required for a person to survive this condition? And what happens beneath the mask?In answer, Ekow Eshun conjures the voices of five very different men. Ira Aldridge: nineteenth century actor and playwright. Matthew Henson: polar explorer. Frantz Fanon: psychiatrist and political philosopher. Malcolm X: activist leader. Justin Fashanu: million-pound footballer. Each a trailblazer in his field. Each haunted by a sense of isolation and exile. Each reaching for a better future.Ekow Eshun tells their stories with breathtaking lyricism and empathy, capturing both the hostility and the beauty they experienced in the world. And he locates them within a wider landscape of Black art, culture, history and politics which stretches from Africa to Europe to North America and the Caribbean. As he moves through this landscape, he maps its thematic contours and fault lines, uncovering traces of the monstrous and the fantastic, of exile and escape, of conflict and vulnerability, and of the totemic central figure of the stranger.Described as a ‘cultural polymath', Ekow Eshun has been at the heart of international creative culture for several decades, curating exhibitions, authoring books, presenting documentaries and chairing high-profile lectures. His work stretches the span of identity, style, masculinity, art and culture. Ekow rose to prominence as a trailblazer in British culture. He was the first Black editor of a major magazine in the UK (Arena Magazine in 1997) and continued to break ground as the first Black director of a major arts organisation, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London (2005-2010).As Chairman of the commissioning group for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, he leads one of the world's most famous public art projects. In July 2022, Ekow curated In the Black Fantastic at the Hayward Gallery in London a landmark exhibition of visionary Black artists exploring myth, science fiction and Afrofuturism. His most recent exhibition, The Time Is Always Now, is a landmark study of the Black figure and its representation in contemporary art. The show opened at the National Portrait Gallery, London and is travelling to multiple venues in the USA, including The Philadelphia Museum of Art.Eshun's writing has appeared in publications including the New York Times, Financial Times, The Guardian, The Observer, Esquire and Wired. His latest book is a work of creative non fiction called The Strangers, published by Penguin in September 2024.Follow @EkowEshun or www.ekoweshun.co.uk/Buy The Strangers, his new book from Waterstone's. During his time on the Hines he was educated by the ship's captainWhen he returned to land he worked in a clothing store where he met Commander Robert E Peary. Once Robert learned of Mathew's sea experience eh recruited him for a surveying tour of Nicaragua. Mathew impresses Peary on the voyage and became first man on all upcoming trips. For twenty years the expeditions centered around the arctic where they traded heavily with the Inuit. Mathew learned their language and was said to be the only non Inuit who became skilled in driving the sled dogs and training the dogs in the Inuit way.He was a skilled craftsman who learned to build igloos from snow and other mobile housing. In 1909 Peary mounted an expedition to reach the North Pole. He and Mathew boarded the Roosevelt leaving Greenland along with four Inuit assistants, Four Inuit guides named Egingwah, Ooqueah, Ootah, and Seeglo, and were the first people to set foot on the North Pole.Mathew was one of six chosen to make the final leg of the journey. Reports have it that Henson was no longer able to continue by foot and used the dog sled to scout ahead of the group.Henson was the one to plant the American flag. There was much controversy about the story but their accounts are backed up by the National Geographic association as well as the Naval Affairs Subcommitee of the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1912 he wrote a book about his experiences traveling widely to give speeches about his experiences. Though Henson was a very important part of the expedition it was Peary who received most of the fame and focus. Henson spent years working as a clerk.Long overdue in 1937 Henson was given membership to the New York Explorers Club.Congress awarded him the Peary Polar Expedition Medal in 1944He was honored by President Truman and President Eisenhower before he died in 1955Bibliographyhttps://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/explore/notable-graves/explorers/matthew-hensonhttps://www.theguardian.com/travel/2020/may/24/matthew-henson-arctic-explorer-first-man-to-north-pole Hosted on Acast. Robert Harris has undertaken more than 50 multi-week trips into the world's wild places: “all unsupported and most of them alone”. He's driven to where the US road systems end (or did in the late 60s), 120 miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska, and he's since been above the Arctic Circle 15 times (“there's a lot I want to see up there”, he says). He's tracked down caribou migrations in the Yukon, lived amongst Inuit people, and walked some of the finest hiking trails in the Dolomites, on New Zealand's South Island, in Chilean Patagonia and in the North American Rockies. And, after a lifetime of making dramatic journeys an annual habit, in 2017 he published his first memoir: Way Out There: Adventures of a Wilderness Trekker.Perhaps most impressively of all though is this: he's just a regular guy from New York. Well, perhaps not so regular. He grew up poor in one of the city's many low-income housing projects with a lot of family love and support, but no money to make his ambitions happen… and the outdoors wasn't even a part of his thinking until the Boy Scouts introduced him to landscapes without pigeons, concrete and cockroaches. He got a job, earned himself a scholarship and put himself through university at Queen's College. After graduation, he founded his own marketing company and settled into a life of work, family, and meticulous planning of audacious adventures all across the planet.Since 1993 he's been a member of the prestigious Explorer's Club, and in recent years he's dedicated himself to giving motivational talks to schools, clubs and social organisations. This one is a little different. I'll be reading for you the first chapter of "A Negro Explorer at the North Pole" by Matthew A. Henson, published in 1909. Matthew Alexander Henson was an African American explorer who accompanied Robert Peary on seven voyages to the Arctic. On the expedition that reached the geographic North Pole on April 6, 1909, Henson was reported to be the first person to reach the pole. Some question the veracity of this claim, but there's no doubt that Henson was an adventurer who risked life and limb to explore wild and perilous landscapes.  Visit the show notes to learn more about Matthew Henson.
