In today's episode, we sit down with Krista to hear her two birth stories. From the outset, Krista knew she wanted a homebirth, a decision she made even before trying to conceive. However, what followed was a journey marked by both heartbreak and triumph.Krista shares candidly about going into spontaneous labour with Salvatore (Sal) at 43+2 weeks, only to face a devastating realisation during labour—the absence of her baby's heartbeat. This heartbreaking moment led to a transfer to the hospital, where Krista gave birth to Salvatore, who was stillborn. She recounts the difficult experience of feeling unsupported by both hospital staff and her private midwife during this traumatic time.Despite the immense loss and mistreatment, Krista courageously chose to trust her instincts and pursue a homebirth for her second child, Theodore (Teddy). With a new private midwife by her side, she welcomed Teddy into the world in the comfort and safety of her own home.Throughout our conversation, Krista emphasises the critical importance of interviewing and carefully selecting care providers and individuals who will be present during childbirth. Her journey underscores how pivotal these choices can be in shaping the birth experience and ensuring emotional and physical safety for both mother and baby.Links:Bears of hopeRed nose - Hospital to homeLifelinePanda Grief lineSuicide call backHeartfelt Evidence Based Birth: The evidence on due dates Mothers & Babies Report - Stillbirths Death and Dying: how different cultures deal with grief and mourning. This week's episode of Motherness is proudly sponsored by Edwards & Co. Edwards & Co is a Kiwi owned and operated family business. They've recently expanded their nursery range with the launch of the SnuzKot Skandi Collection, alongside the already popular SnuzPod Bedside Bassinet. Today’s guest is Tehani Buchanan, a beautiful māmā who was the catalyst for sparking my awareness of decolonising mamahood. To say Tehani’s journey is varied would be quite the understatement but ‘journey’ really is the perfect word – her entry into motherhood began with a traumatic c-section birth at 33 weeks which left her with a mental injury that she says was raw, her daughter had a long NICU stay, and she exclusively pumped for a while as well. Then, with her second, a home birth after cesarean, exclusive breastfeeding to extended breastfeeding, wet nursing, feeding to sleep, immersing her tamariki in Te Reo Māori, and becoming a single mama. Thank you, Tehani for trusting me with the gift of sharing your experience, there is so much power in these words…Thank you again to Edwards & Co for sponsoring this week's episode. Today I got to interview someone I have been following for years and years. Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride (along with Donna Gates) is one of the people whose work has greatly influenced my own health and the health of the many clients I have helped since working professionally. Dr. Campbell-McBride is a medical doctor with two postgraduate degrees: Master of Medical Sciences in Neurology and Master of Medical Sciences in Human Nutrition. She graduated as a medical doctor in Russia. After practicing for five years as a Neurologist and three years as a Neurosurgeon she started a family and moved to the UK, where she got her second postgraduate degree in Human Nutrition. She practices in the UK as a nutritionist and not as a medical doctor. She is best known for developing a concept of GAPS (Gut And Psychology Syndrome), which she described in her book Gut And Psychology Syndrome - Natural Treatment for Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Depression, and Schizophrenia, now in its second edition. Thousands of people around the world follow the highly successful GAPS Nutritional Protocol to help themselves and their families. Her clinic is now closed but Dr. Campbell-McBride has worked as a nutritional consultant with many patients with heart disease, high blood pressure, arrhythmia, stroke and other complications of atherosclerosis. She has become acutely aware of the existing confusion about nutrition and these conditions, which spurred an intensive study into this subject. The result of this study was her book Put Your Heart In Your Mouth! - What Really Is Heart Disease And What We Can Do To Prevent And Even Reverse It. The interview we discussed: Why Dr. Campbell McBride moved to the UK Why she developed the GAPS diet What people can do to reverse and massively reduce the effects of Autism and other mental health illness Why the gut is now considered our first brain, ahead of the one in our head, and why keeping it healthy is the key to long-lasting health How toxins are behind every chronic illness Why partner being healthy before getting pregnant is essential for fertility and for the health of their baby Why it’s essential we bring the practice of Wet Nursing back & much much more It was great talking to Dr. CAmpbell McBride and I can’t wait to get her back on the show to talk all about her new book Vegetarianism Explained. You can find Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride here: http://www.doctor-natasha.com/ Enjoy the show and don’t forget to share it with your friends and family, as well as writing a comment, or a review on iTunes. The matter of need is somewhat open for interpretation, as are many things. When I think of need as a modern woman, I think of - If for whatever reason, a mother cannot breastfeed her baby. Whether it is because she has died she is too sick to breastfeed, she has been separated from her baby or she has no milk to provide for her baby. Need to woman centuries ago could have been defined as - She needs to get back to conceiving babies and the act of breastfeeding acts as one form of contraception. Customs are for her to get breeding again as soon as she could. The need also arose from what was expected of her in society, which was to delegate all physical work to others to demonstrate her own and her family's high status.
